Yes—self-hosted n8n can replace a task-metered Zapier plan when you are willing to operate the server yourself. The Community edition has no n8n subscription fee, and Docker gives you a repeatable way to run it on a laptop, home server, VPS, or private cloud. “Unlimited” does not mean infinite work: CPU, memory, storage, database capacity, upstream API quotas, network bandwidth, and your hosting bill still impose limits.

The trade is straightforward. Zapier manages availability, upgrades, and security while charging by tasks. Docker-hosted n8n gives you deployment and data-location control, but you become responsible for backups, patching, HTTPS, monitoring, recovery, and scaling. This guide shows a practical Docker Compose installation and the decisions that determine whether it is actually cheaper and safer for your workload.

Can self-hosted n8n replace Zapier?

For internal automations and team-owned workflows, the free self-hosted Community edition is a credible replacement for task-metered Zapier. n8n documents self-hosting on your own infrastructure, on-premises, or a private cloud, with Docker Compose among the supported deployment methods. You keep control of where credentials and workflow data reside, but you also own every operational task that a managed service normally performs.

That makes the choice less about a feature checklist and more about responsibility. If a failed upgrade, expired certificate, full disk, or lost database would interrupt important business processes and nobody can respond, a managed service is usually the safer fit. If you have basic Linux and container skills and value control over data and runtime costs, Docker is practical.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What does “unlimited automations” mean with Docker?

It means the Community edition does not meter each successful action against a monthly n8n task allowance. It does not promise unlimited throughput or unlimited access to third-party services.

  • Compute: Every trigger and action consumes CPU and memory. Large batches, file transformations, and concurrent runs can exhaust a small VM.
  • Storage: Execution history, binary files, logs, and database growth eventually fill the disk unless you set retention and housekeeping policies.
  • External limits: Email providers, payment APIs, CRM systems, and other services enforce their own rate limits, quotas, and paid tiers.
  • Network and provider limits: Your VPS or cloud account may cap bandwidth, connections, or monthly spend.
  • Availability: A power cut, host outage, DNS error, or broken reverse proxy stops webhooks until you repair it.

Think of n8n Community as removing one software subscription meter. Your real capacity is the highest sustained workload your infrastructure and connected services can handle reliably.

How do n8n and Zapier differ in cost and responsibility?

Zapier is a managed service with a small free allowance and paid task-based plans. n8n’s self-hosted Community edition removes the n8n license charge, while infrastructure and operations become your costs. The following figures are the published plan details available on October 26, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor Self-hosted n8n Community Zapier
Recurring platform price No n8n software fee for the Community edition; you pay for the server, storage, backups, bandwidth, monitoring, and your time. Free plan includes 100 tasks per month. Professional starts at $19.99 per month when billed annually.
Usage meter No n8n subscription task allowance. Capacity is constrained by your hardware, database, provider quotas, and network. Each plan has a monthly task allowance. A task is a successful action step; when the allowance is reached, runs can be held, with pay-per-task continuation available to eligible paid accounts.
Setup time Install Docker, create persistent storage, configure environment variables, and put HTTPS in front of the editor and webhooks. Create an account and build workflows in a hosted interface.
Maintenance You patch the host and images, renew certificates, monitor resources, back up data, and test restores. The provider operates the application and underlying service.
Data location You choose the machine, region, network, and storage policy. Data is handled within the provider’s hosted architecture and account controls.
Deployment control Full control over Docker settings, network boundaries, versions, and integrations. Limited to the settings and release schedule exposed by the hosted product.
Scaling You select larger hosts or a more complex architecture. No universal executions-per-second figure applies; workload and infrastructure determine capacity. Scaling follows the selected plan, task allowance, and product limits.
Collaboration and administration Community is suitable for operator-managed workflows. Paid n8n editions add features such as SSO, environments, projects, and external secrets. Team and enterprise capabilities depend on the Zapier plan.
License boundary Internal use is the straightforward Community-edition case. Client access and hosted-service scenarios require a license check. Use is governed by Zapier’s account and plan terms.

n8n’s current paid pricing is also execution-based: Starter is listed at €20 per month billed annually for 2,500 workflow executions, Pro at €50 per month for 10,000, and Business at €667 per month for 40,000. Those figures are alternatives to self-hosting, not requirements for a Docker installation. n8n’s August 2025 pricing update says paid plans removed active-workflow limits and include unlimited users and steps, while billing remains based on executions.

Where should you run n8n?

Choose the smallest environment that can meet your availability and security requirements, then leave room for growth.

Local Docker Desktop

A laptop or desktop is ideal for learning, prototyping credentials, and building workflows that you start manually. It is a poor home for public webhooks because sleep, reboots, changing IP addresses, and router rules make uptime unpredictable. Do not expose a development editor directly to the internet.

Always-on home server

A home server can run private workflows at low marginal cost, but you must handle power protection, backups, DNS, inbound firewall rules, and ISP restrictions. A tunnel or VPN can reduce exposed ports, although it adds another component to maintain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VPS or cloud virtual machine

An always-on VM is the usual starting point for production webhooks. n8n documents deployment paths for providers including AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, DigitalOcean, and Hetzner. Compare the complete bill—not only compute, but also snapshots, object storage, egress, managed databases, and monitoring.

Private cloud or on-premises cluster

This option makes sense when data residency, internal networking, or existing operations tooling matters. It also demands the strongest skills in container scheduling, upgrades, secrets management, and disaster recovery. Docker Compose remains useful for a single host; a cluster is a separate architecture decision.

What do you need before installing n8n with Docker?

Prepare these items before creating the first container. Skipping them usually causes data loss or an insecure editor rather than a working automation platform.

  • A supported Docker installation: Docker Engine on Linux or Docker Desktop on macOS and Windows, with the Compose plugin available as docker compose.
  • A dedicated project directory that is not a public Git repository.
  • Persistent storage for /home/node/.n8n. Without it, recreating the container can remove your owner account, credentials, and workflows.
  • A fully qualified domain name if webhooks must be reachable from the internet, plus DNS control for that name.
  • A long, random N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY. n8n uses this key to protect stored credentials; losing it can make existing encrypted credentials unusable after a restore.
  • A backup destination separate from the running host, such as another machine or object-storage account.
  • A plan for HTTPS, firewall rules, updates, log retention, and who receives outage alerts.

Generate a key locally and keep it in a password manager or secret store:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
openssl rand -hex 32

Do not commit the key, database file, .env file, or exported credentials to source control. Treat workflow exports as sensitive because they can contain tokens, URLs, and business logic.

How do you write a Docker Compose file for n8n?

Create a directory such as ~/n8n, then place a compose.yaml file inside it. This single-container example uses n8n’s local database and a named volume, which is an approachable arrangement for a small installation. Adapt the domain, timezone, and key to your host.

services:
  n8n:
    image: docker.n8n.io/n8nio/n8n:latest
    restart: unless-stopped
    ports:
      - "127.0.0.1:5678:5678"
    environment:
      - N8N_HOST=n8n.example.com
      - N8N_PORT=5678
      - N8N_PROTOCOL=https
      - WEBHOOK_URL=https://n8n.example.com/
      - N8N_EDITOR_BASE_URL=https://n8n.example.com/
      - GENERIC_TIMEZONE=Etc/UTC
      - TZ=Etc/UTC
      - N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY=replace-with-a-long-random-secret
    volumes:
      - n8n_data:/home/node/.n8n

volumes:
  n8n_data:

The 127.0.0.1 binding keeps the application off the public network interface. A reverse proxy on the same host can terminate TLS and forward requests to port 5678. If you are testing only on your own machine, open http://localhost:5678 and use a local hostname instead of publishing a public webhook URL.

Why persist /home/node/.n8n?

That directory contains the n8n user configuration, database files in a default local setup, and encryption-related state. The named volume survives container replacement. A volume is not a backup: deleting the volume, losing the host, or corrupting the database still destroys the installation unless you copy it elsewhere.

When should you use PostgreSQL and queue workers?

A single process is easier to operate and is often sufficient for modest workloads. Higher concurrency, larger execution histories, or multiple workers call for a deliberate database and queue architecture. Move to that design only when you can also monitor it, back up every component, and document how to recover it; adding containers without operational discipline increases failure modes.

How do you start and verify the Compose stack?

Run the following from the directory containing compose.yaml:

  1. docker compose config — validates YAML interpolation and shows the resolved configuration. Check that the hostname, URL, timezone, and encryption key are correct before starting.
  2. docker compose up -d — downloads the image and starts n8n in the background.
  3. docker compose ps — confirms the container is running and shows its port mapping.
  4. docker compose logs -f n8n — watches startup output. Stop the stream with Ctrl+C; the container continues running.
  5. Open the HTTPS hostname through your reverse proxy, create the owner account, and sign in.
  6. Create a small manual workflow, run it once, and confirm the expected output before enabling schedules or webhooks.
  7. Activate only workflows that should run continuously. Review each trigger so a test schedule cannot unexpectedly send messages or modify production data.

These checks prove that the container and editor work; they do not prove production readiness. Test a webhook from the actual external service, verify that its callback reaches your public URL, and confirm that a restart preserves the owner account and workflow list.

How do you put HTTPS and a reverse proxy in front of n8n?

Internet-facing webhooks and editor sessions should use HTTPS. The reverse proxy listens on ports 80 and 443, obtains and renews a certificate, and forwards requests to 127.0.0.1:5678. Keep the n8n port bound to loopback so it is not an alternate public entry point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Point the DNS A or AAAA record for your chosen hostname at the VM’s public address.
  2. Allow only the web ports needed by the proxy in the host firewall. Keep SSH restricted to trusted source addresses or a VPN where possible.
  3. Configure the proxy’s upstream as http://127.0.0.1:5678 and preserve the original host and protocol headers.
  4. Set N8N_HOST, WEBHOOK_URL, and N8N_EDITOR_BASE_URL to the same canonical HTTPS hostname, then recreate the container.
  5. From an external network, open the editor and trigger a test webhook. A browser-only test can miss inbound routing problems.

Do not use a self-signed certificate for a service that external providers must call; many webhook senders reject it. If your DNS or certificate is not ready, keep the instance private rather than exposing an HTTP editor with credentials.

How do you secure and maintain a self-hosted n8n instance?

Security is an operating routine, not a one-time Docker setting. Assign an owner and a calendar for each task below.

Protect secrets and access

  • Use a unique owner password and enable the strongest available account protections in your edition.
  • Keep the encryption key outside source control and back it up separately from the database.
  • Limit who can reach the editor with firewall rules, VPN access, or an identity-aware proxy when appropriate.
  • Use least-privilege API tokens in connected services. Rotate them when staff leave or a workflow is copied.
  • Review shared credentials and inactive workflows. An enabled schedule can continue making API calls even when nobody is watching it.

Patch predictably

Pin a tested n8n image tag for production instead of changing versions blindly on every pull. Read release notes, export or back up the instance, pull the new image, recreate the service, and run smoke tests. Also patch the host operating system, Docker Engine, reverse proxy, and any database container. Keep a known-good image tag so you can roll back if a workflow or node behaves differently.

Back up and test restoration

Back up the n8n data volume and database on a schedule that matches the maximum data loss you can tolerate. Copy backups off the host, restrict their access, and encrypt them at rest. At least occasionally, restore into a separate test directory with the same encryption key; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitor the failure signals

  • Disk usage, especially execution data and Docker logs.
  • Memory pressure, CPU saturation, and container restarts.
  • HTTP error rates and latency for webhook endpoints.
  • Failed workflow runs and authentication errors from upstream services.
  • Certificate expiry, DNS changes, and backup job status.

Set retention policies for execution data and logs so diagnostic detail does not quietly become an outage. n8n does not publish one universal backup interval or hardware size; choose based on your run volume, recovery objective, and budget.

What does n8n’s Community license allow?

The Sustainable Use License FAQ makes the internal-use case clear: the free self-hosted Community edition is allowed when you or people in your organization create and edit workflows. You may also build and run workflows for clients on your instance when clients receive outputs but cannot access or change n8n.

Different rules apply when n8n itself becomes the product. Hosting n8n as a service, white-labeling it, or giving outside users a workflow-building interface requires a commercial-license review. Before selling automation access, document exactly who can log in, who can edit workflows, and whether customers are configuring n8n rather than merely receiving results. Ask n8n about the appropriate commercial terms when the arrangement is not plainly internal or output-only.

Is self-hosted n8n actually cheaper?

Calculate your own break-even point instead of treating the zero-dollar software line as the total price. Add these recurring and one-time costs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • VM or dedicated server rental, including extra CPU or memory for peak concurrency.
  • Backups, snapshots, object storage, bandwidth, and any managed database.
  • Domain registration, DNS, certificate or proxy service, and monitoring.
  • Your engineering time for installation, upgrades, incident response, security reviews, and restore tests.
  • Downtime risk when an unattended instance fails.

Compare that total with the Zapier plan that covers your successful action steps. Zapier’s Free plan allows 100 tasks per month; Professional starts at $19.99 per month billed annually and includes multi-step Zaps, premium apps, and webhooks. A self-hosted system can cost less at high execution volume, but a small workflow may be cheaper overall on a managed plan once your time and backup requirements are valued.

Use a simple monthly model: self-hosted total = hosting + backups + ancillary services + maintenance time + expected outage cost. Compare it with managed total = subscription + overage or pay-per-task charges. Recalculate when workflow volume, compliance requirements, or uptime expectations change.

What commonly breaks, and how do you fix it?

The editor opens locally but not through the domain

Check DNS resolution, firewall rules, proxy certificate status, and the upstream address. Confirm that the container is bound to loopback and that the proxy is on the same host or can reach that address. Inspect proxy and n8n logs together; a 502 usually indicates an upstream or port problem rather than an n8n credential error.

Webhooks show the wrong URL

Verify that WEBHOOK_URL, N8N_HOST, N8N_PROTOCOL, and N8N_EDITOR_BASE_URL describe the public HTTPS address exactly, including any path. Recreate the container after changing environment variables, then copy the newly displayed webhook URL into the external service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Workflows disappear after an update

Inspect docker compose config and confirm the named volume is still mounted at /home/node/.n8n. Do not run a one-off container with an anonymous volume for production data. If the volume is intact, restore the previous image tag and investigate the database or migration log before trying another upgrade.

Credentials fail after restoring a backup

The restored instance must use the same N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY that encrypted those credentials. Restore the key from its protected backup, verify file permissions, and restart n8n. If the key was permanently lost, recreate credentials rather than guessing or repeatedly changing configuration.

Runs are slow or the host runs out of memory

Look for concurrent schedules, large binary payloads, unbounded loops, and execution-history growth. Reduce concurrency or batch sizes, limit retention, and move to a larger host only after identifying the workload that consumes resources. Upstream API throttling can look like an n8n performance problem, so inspect response codes and retry behavior too.

When should you choose managed n8n or Zapier instead?

Choose a managed option when you need someone else to handle uptime, upgrades, backups, and security; when your team cannot respond to incidents; or when the cost of a missed webhook exceeds the infrastructure savings. n8n’s own Docker guidance recommends its cloud offering for people without server, container, scaling, security, and configuration expertise.

Choose self-hosting when data-location control, private networking, custom deployment, or high execution volume justifies the operational work. Start with a private Compose installation, prove backup and restore, then expose only the endpoints your workflows require. That sequence gives you the cost and control benefits without pretending that “unlimited” removes engineering constraints.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can n8n run without a public domain name?

Yes. Manual workflows and outbound integrations can run on localhost or a private network. A publicly reachable HTTPS URL is needed only for services that must send inbound webhooks to your instance; keep such an installation private until DNS and TLS are configured.

What happens to scheduled workflows when the Docker host is offline?

They do not run while the container is stopped, so events scheduled for that interval may be missed unless the triggering service retries them. Use host monitoring and a restart policy, and design important workflows with idempotency or reconciliation steps.

Can I move a Docker n8n installation to another server?

Yes, if you transfer the persistent data and database, copy the exact encryption key, reproduce the environment variables, and update DNS or proxy routing. Perform the move as a tested restore, then keep the old instance available until webhooks and credentials have been verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a separate database for a small n8n installation?

Not necessarily. A single Compose service with persistent n8n storage is simpler for modest workloads. A separate database and queue-based workers become an architecture choice when concurrency, execution history, or availability requirements exceed what one process can comfortably and safely handle.
