Yes—you can run Hermes Agent through OmniRoute and send requests to providers that offer free access, including Kiro AI and OpenCode Free. The reliable sequence is to get Hermes working with one ordinary provider first, install OmniRoute locally, verify its OpenAI-compatible API at http://localhost:20128/v1, then point Hermes to that endpoint. OmniRoute can choose a provider automatically or route to a named model, but it cannot remove upstream quotas, authentication, regional restrictions, rate limits, or policy limits.

What does Hermes Agent through OmniRoute actually do?
Hermes Agent is an agent from Nous Research designed for command-line, desktop, messaging, and cloud-style deployments. It can plan work, call tools, and use a learning loop. OmniRoute is a local open-source gateway that exposes an OpenAI-compatible API, accepts requests from clients such as Hermes, and forwards them to configured model providers.
In this arrangement, Hermes is the client and OmniRoute is the translation and routing layer. Hermes sends an API request to your local gateway; OmniRoute selects a provider and model, then returns the provider’s response in an OpenAI-compatible format. The gateway may skip a failed provider or choose another one in automatic mode, but the provider still controls service availability and usage limits.

The project documentation describes OmniRoute as free and open-source; that does not make every upstream model free. You may pay a provider, authenticate to a provider account, or use a provider’s no-key access subject to that provider’s terms.
What do I need before installing?
- A Linux or macOS shell, or Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2). Hermes also documents a native Windows PowerShell installer.
- Permission to install Node-based packages for OmniRoute with
npm. - A Hermes installation and at least one working provider configuration for the initial smoke test.
- A model context window of at least 64,000 tokens for Hermes multi-step tool-calling workflows. For a local model, configure at least 65,536 tokens.
- An internet connection when the selected upstream provider is remote. OmniRoute does not turn an offline provider into an available one.
The 64,000-token figure is a documented Hermes minimum for multi-step tool use in the 2026 documentation. A model that answers short prompts successfully can still fail once an agent accumulates tool results, plans, and previous messages.

How do I install Hermes Agent and prove it works?
Install Hermes first and verify a normal conversation before adding a gateway. The Hermes quickstart calls provider selection “The single most important setup step” and gives this rule of thumb: if Hermes cannot complete a normal chat, do not add more features yet.
- On Linux, macOS, or WSL2, run
curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash. On native Windows, use the PowerShell installer documented in the Hermes documentation. - Close and reopen your terminal, or reload the shell, so the installed command is on your path.
- Run
hermes modeland select a provider and model that you can authenticate and use. If you are using the Nous Portal flow, runhermes setup --portalinstead. - Start a regular Hermes chat and confirm that it can answer without tool-calling customizations, gateway settings, or extra skills. Record the model name and provider you selected; this gives you a known-good fallback for later troubleshooting.
Do not skip the baseline test. If the direct Hermes setup fails, an OmniRoute error can obscure whether the problem is credentials, the model, the network, or Hermes itself.
How do I install and start OmniRoute?
OmniRoute runs as a local service. Its documented default dashboard and API address is http://localhost:20128, with OpenAI-compatible routes below /v1.

npm install -g omniroute. - Start the gateway by running
omniroute. - Open
http://localhost:20128in a browser to reach the local dashboard described by the project documentation. - Use the dashboard or the documented configuration flow to connect a provider. OmniRoute lists Kiro AI and OpenCode Free as providers that can be connected without an API key; “without an API key” does not mean without account, quota, login, regional, or acceptable-use conditions.
Keep the terminal running while testing. If you stop the omniroute process, Hermes will receive a connection failure even though its endpoint settings are correct.

Configure Hermes as an OpenAI-compatible client and use OmniRoute’s base URL, not the dashboard URL by itself: http://localhost:20128/v1. Select auto for gateway-managed selection or use a provider/model identifier exposed by OmniRoute when you need deterministic routing.
- In Hermes’ provider or model configuration, choose the custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint option.
- Set the base URL to
http://localhost:20128/v1. - Set the model field to
auto, or enter the exact provider/model identifier shown by OmniRoute. - Supply credentials only when the selected upstream provider requires them. A no-key provider may still require a browser login or other account authorization.
- Query the gateway’s model list at
http://localhost:20128/v1/modelsusing the method supported by your client, then select a returned identifier if you are not usingauto. - Run another ordinary Hermes chat. Only after that succeeds should you enable multi-step tools, additional skills, messaging integrations, or other agent features.
The exact configuration screen can change between Hermes releases, so use the custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint fields in the current Hermes interface rather than assuming a provider-specific menu name.
Should I use auto or name a provider and model?
Use auto when availability, fallback, and quota-aware selection matter more than identical model behavior on every run. Name a provider/model when you need reproducible outputs, stable capability assumptions, or easier debugging.

OmniRoute’s documentation says auto considers speed, cost, quality, and availability. The project documentation lists 19 routing strategies as of 2026; strategy names and availability can change with releases, so treat that count as a dated documentation figure rather than a permanent feature guarantee.

What is actually free in this setup?
There are three separate costs to distinguish: the gateway software, Hermes, and upstream inference. OmniRoute itself is free and open-source according to its quick-start documentation. Whether Hermes access or a selected model costs money depends on the provider and account path you use.

No verified aggregate free-token total is established for these providers. Do not treat a “free” label as a guaranteed amount of capacity or uninterrupted service.
What are the important context and reliability limits?
Context length
Hermes requires at least 64,000 tokens of model context for multi-step tool-calling workflows. If you run a local model, set its context size to at least 65,536 tokens. Smaller windows can truncate instructions or tool history, causing malformed calls, repetitive planning, or apparently random failures.
Provider limits
A free route can impose rate limits, daily or monthly quotas, login requirements, regional restrictions, and policy limits. OmniRoute can select another configured provider after a failure, but it cannot increase a quota or override a provider’s policy.
Variable behavior with fallback
Automatic fallback improves availability at the cost of consistency. Different models may format tool calls differently, have different context capacities, or respond at different speeds. For a workflow that must behave the same way each run, prefer a named model and monitor its availability.

How do I troubleshoot a failed connection?
Hermes fails before contacting OmniRoute
Return to the direct Hermes configuration and complete a normal chat. Recheck the provider selection made with hermes model or hermes setup --portal, then reload the shell if the hermes command is not found.
Hermes reports a connection or refused-connection error
Confirm that the omniroute process is still running and that Hermes uses http://localhost:20128/v1. A common mistake is entering the dashboard address without the /v1 API suffix.

Open the local dashboard, finish the provider connection, and query /v1/models again. Use an identifier returned by the gateway instead of guessing a provider’s model name.
Short chats work but tool workflows fail
Check the model’s context configuration first. Hermes’ documented minimum is 64,000 tokens; for a local model use at least 65,536. Then test with a named model so routing changes do not hide a context or tool-compatibility issue.
A free provider suddenly stops responding
Assume an upstream limit or access change before changing Hermes code. Check the provider’s login state, quota, region, and policy response, then let auto select another configured provider or switch temporarily to a named working route.

Can I run Hermes continuously on a VPS?
Yes, an always-on deployment is an optional pattern described in Hermes documentation: run the agent on a low-cost VPS or cloud VM and connect it to messaging gateways. It is not required for the local OmniRoute setup in this guide.

A remote deployment changes the operational questions. You must keep the Hermes and OmniRoute processes running, protect credentials, restrict access to the gateway, and account for the fact that prompts and tool results may be sent to the upstream providers you configure. A local installation keeps the gateway on your machine, but it does not make upstream provider traffic private or exempt it from provider terms.
What is the simplest repeatable workflow?
- Install Hermes and select one working provider.
- Complete a normal chat directly in Hermes.
- Install and start OmniRoute.
- Connect a provider that you are authorized to use, including a no-key option if its current terms allow you.

Do I need an OmniRoute account to run the gateway locally?
The gateway itself is a local open-source process, so the software does not create a separate OmniRoute subscription requirement. You may still need an account or login with whichever upstream provider you connect, even when that provider is listed as requiring no API key.
Why does Hermes need such a large context window?
Agent runs accumulate instructions, intermediate plans, tool outputs, and conversation history. The documented 64,000-token minimum applies to multi-step tool-calling workflows, not merely to sending a short chat message.
Will automatic routing always keep the same model?
No. auto is intended to choose among available providers using factors such as availability, speed, cost, and quality. Pin a provider/model identifier when consistent behavior is more important than fallback.
Can I use this setup without an internet connection?
