Which Ruby versions does rubyfmt support?
The official rubyfmt README does not state a minimum supported Ruby version or provide a Ruby compatibility matrix. That absence is not proof that every Ruby version works. rubyfmt is written in Rust, but it parses and formats Ruby source; the formatter’s implementation language does not establish which Ruby syntax or runtime versions a particular release supports.
Before adding it to a project, check the requirements and compatibility notes for the exact rubyfmt release you plan to install. This is particularly important if the project is tied to an older Ruby runtime. Do not apply requirements published for a differently named tool such as rfmt; it is a separate project.
How do I install rubyfmt?
Homebrew
The project README’s quick-start command is:
brew install rubyfmtHomebrew listed stable version 0.14.1 on October 4, 2026, with bottles for Apple Silicon on macOS Tahoe, Sequoia, and Sonoma; Intel macOS Sonoma; and Linux ARM64 and x86_64. Build from source
The project README also documents building with Cargo. After building, put target/release/rubyfmt-main on your PATH under the name rubyfmt, so commands and editor integrations can find the executable.
How do I control which files rubyfmt formats?
rubyfmt documents file-selection controls rather than a general style-configuration file. They let a team choose where formatting runs without implying that options such as line length, quote style, or indent width are configurable.

The project’s current documented route is Ruby LSP with the ruby-lsp-rubyfmt-formatter add-on. Ruby LSP lists rubyfmt as a formatter supplied by a community add-on, so the setup requires both the Ruby LSP extension and the add-on.

- Add the formatter add-on to your project development group with
bundle add ruby-lsp-rubyfmt-formatter --group development, or install it globally withgem install ruby-lsp-rubyfmt-formatter. - Set Ruby LSP as the default formatter for Ruby and enable format-on-save. In VS Code settings, set
rubyLsp.formattertorubyfmt.
The available formatter setting is also listed in the Ruby LSP VS Code extension settings. The rubyfmt README includes a path using the older Ruby VS Code extension, but marks that extension deprecated; it should be treated as a legacy option, not the recommended starting point. The README also lists Formatto as another route.

These integrations are documented routes, not guarantees of compatibility with every editor release. If an editor does not format, confirm that it can find the rubyfmt executable on its PATH and check whether its plug-in is still maintained. The Sublime Text Package Control listing says the Rubyfmt plug-in was last modified six years ago.
