Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X while the X20 is sold out. The $999.99 Ally X (model RC73XA) uses the same AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB memory, 1TB SSD and 80Wh battery as the $1,299 ROG Xbox Ally X20. You give up the X20’s 7.4-inch OLED panel and anniversary controls, but not its core performance or Xbox software experience.
ASUS says the $599 ROG Xbox Ally and $999 Ally X remain on sale. Windows Central reported on October 20, 2026 that both X20 versions had sold out at ASUS.com and Best Buy; no official restock date has been announced. If OLED is essential, wait for stock. If you want a handheld now, the Ally X is the least-compromised replacement.
Is the ROG Xbox Ally X20 actually sold out?
It was sold out at major US listings soon after its October 15, 2026 launch, but that is a stock snapshot rather than proof of discontinuation. Windows Central reported the $1,299 standalone unit and $2,499 bundle unavailable at ASUS.com and Best Buy on October 20; later reports also found no Amazon US stock. ASUS has not published a replenishment date, so availability may return in waves.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Because retailer inventory changes daily, check the seller’s cart status before paying a markup. Import listings and used units can cost more than the official $999.99 Ally X while providing weaker warranty coverage.
Which alternative should you buy first?
For most people, the ROG Xbox Ally X is the right immediate purchase. Choose another model only when your priority is clearly different: maximum frame rate, a cheaper OLED SteamOS system, a larger screen, or the lowest price.
| What you care about | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Closest X20 replacement | ROG Xbox Ally X — $999.99 | Same Z2 Extreme platform, 24GB RAM, 1TB SSD and 80Wh battery; native Xbox full-screen software. |
| Higher AAA frame rates and longer gaming endurance | MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ — $1,799 | Independent Tom’s Guide results show substantially higher performance, plus a 32GB/8-inch package. |
| Cheaper OLED with a console-like OS | Steam Deck OLED — $789 (512GB) or $949 (1TB) | SteamOS, 7.4-inch HDR OLED and lower cost; not a Z2 Extreme performance match. |
| Largest OLED and detachable controls | Lenovo Legion Go 2 | 8.8-inch 144Hz OLED and detachable TrueStrike controllers, but it is much heavier and US pricing is unsettled. |
| Lowest-cost Xbox Windows handheld | ROG Xbox Ally — $599 | Same software shell at a lower price, with a slower chip, 16GB RAM and a 60Wh battery. |
| 8-inch Intel display at roughly X20 money | Acer Predator Atlas 8 | Reported around $1,299.99, with an 8-inch 16:10 IPS panel and dual Thunderbolt 4; not an OLED substitute. |
What does the X20 offer that the Ally X does not?
The X20’s premium is mostly for the display, controls and limited-edition design. It has a 7.4-inch 1080p OLED panel with 120Hz refresh and variable refresh rate. ASUS and Digital Foundry cite about 600 nits typical brightness and up to 1,400 nits HDR peak; Digital Foundry measured a 30–120Hz VRR range. The Ally X instead has a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS display rated at 500 nits. It is not OLED, despite incorrect comparison tables that copied the X20 panel onto the Ally X.
The X20 adds magnetic TMR analog sticks, a tool-free D-pad that switches between four-way and eight-way modes, flush face buttons, rubberized grips and impulse triggers. Its translucent black 20th-anniversary chassis is about 756g (1.67 pounds), compared with roughly 715g for the Ally X. ASUS also claims a redesigned three-path cooler with 20% more airflow and 11% more heatsink-fin area, but the processor and memory platform remain the same.
Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter summarized the hardware relationship: “After all, it’s the same AMD Z2 Extreme processor, the same perfectly fine 24GB of LPDDR5 memory, the same 1TB SSD, the same 80Wh battery.” That is why buying an Ally X is a performance-equivalent fallback rather than a downgrade in frame-rate potential.
Is the ROG Xbox Ally X the closest replacement?
Yes. At $999.99, the Ally X is the default buy-now option because it preserves the X20’s processor, memory capacity, storage, battery size, USB4 port and Xbox-oriented interface. It also benefits from a year of software updates and broad US retail availability.
The Ally X uses AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2280 drive. Its 80Wh battery is the same capacity as the X20’s. ASUS sells it with Windows 11 Home, the Xbox full-screen experience and Armoury Crate SE. A three-month Game Pass promotion has been included on ASUS listings, although promotions can change by seller and date.
What you lose is visible every time you play: OLED contrast and HDR highlights, the extra 0.4 inch of diagonal size, TMR sticks, the transforming D-pad and anniversary shell. PCGamesN described the Ally X IPS screen as effective for gaming but noted that it cannot produce OLED-level black levels and contrast. If dark-room image quality is the reason you wanted the X20, waiting is reasonable; if you mainly wanted Z2 Extreme performance, the Ally X saves $300.

Search for “ROG Xbox Ally X RC73XA” when shopping. That wording avoids confusion with the older 2024 ROG Ally X built around a different generation of AMD silicon. ASUS, Best Buy, Microsoft and Amazon have all been listed as US channels; prefer an authorized seller at the official price over an imported unit around $1,150 or a used listing near $1,000.
Is the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ faster than the X20?
According to Tom’s Guide’s October 2026 comparison, yes by a wide margin. The Claw 8 EX AI+ costs $1,799 and uses Intel Arc G3 Extreme graphics, 32GB LPDDR5x, a 1TB SSD, an 8-inch 1920×1200 IPS screen with 48–120Hz VRR, Wi‑Fi 7 and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. It weighs about 1.7 pounds and has a larger battery than the X20, although battery results depend on the game and power mode.
In Tom’s Guide’s named tests, Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1080p Medium and 35W averaged 63.8 frames per second on the Claw versus 23 fps on the X20. At 17W, the Claw still reached 48.8 fps. Cyberpunk 2077 at 720p High, native resolution, measured 27.01 fps on the Claw and 11.87 fps on the X20. A separate 171.5-fps figure used XeSS and four-times multi-frame generation, so it cannot be compared with the native result. Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p High was 66 fps versus 31 fps.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Tom’s Guide’s gaming battery rundown lasted 4 hours 10 minutes on the Claw and 2 hours 47 minutes on the X20. Those are one publication’s test conditions, not a universal battery ranking. The trade-off is display quality: the Claw’s IPS panel lacks the X20’s OLED blacks and HDR impact, and its software is a conventional Windows handheld environment rather than the deeply integrated Xbox shell.
Choose the Claw if you will spend $1,799 for higher AAA frame rates, 32GB memory and longer endurance. Choose the X20—or the Ally X—if OLED ergonomics, Xbox integration and a lower price matter more. Regional MSI stores have shown unavailable or backordered status, so verify stock before ordering.
Is the Lenovo Legion Go 2 a better OLED alternative?
It can be, if you want the biggest OLED screen and detachable controllers rather than a compact Xbox-style handheld. Typical Legion Go 2 configurations use an 8.8-inch 1920×1200 OLED panel up to 144Hz, VESA True Black 1000/HDR1000 support, detachable TrueStrike controllers, a kickstand, up to 32GB LPDDR5X, up to 2TB storage and a 74Wh battery. Weight is about 920g, substantially above the X20 or Ally X.
The detachable controllers enable tabletop play and a mouse-style FPS mode that the Ally family cannot replicate. The larger panel is excellent for strategy games and split-screen use, but the device is less portable and less Xbox-native. Ryzen Z2 and Z2 Extreme versions exist, so check the exact SKU rather than assuming every Legion Go 2 matches the X20’s processor.
US pricing was unusually inconsistent in October 2026. Reports included $1,999.99 for a 1TB model, $3,081.99 for an unavailable 32GB/2TB listing and an $3,999 8TB Walmart listing, while older guides cited roughly $1,199–$1,349 street prices. These numbers are not a reliable MSRP. Verify that the precise configuration is orderable on Lenovo’s US store before comparing it with a $1,299 X20.

Is the Steam Deck OLED a better cheaper option?
Choose the Steam Deck OLED when your games are primarily on Steam and you value SteamOS over Xbox and Windows compatibility. Valve lists a 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED display at 90Hz, a 50Wh battery, Wi‑Fi 6E, trackpads, gyro controls and a weight of about 640g. The 1TB model adds anti-glare etched glass. Valve says the OLED model provides 30–50% more battery life than the LCD Deck; its specification table gives a content-dependent range of roughly 3–12 hours.
Valve’s store prices checked in late October 2026 were $789 for 512GB and $949 for 1TB. Those prices make it the most affordable new OLED choice in this group. Buy from Valve first; reseller prices were higher in the same period.
The Deck is not a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme equivalent. Its lower-power AMD platform handles indie games and many older titles well, but the Ally X and X20 have more headroom for demanding 1080p Windows releases. You also give up native Xbox full-screen mode, straightforward PC Game Pass installation and some anti-cheat compatibility. A SteamOS-focused buyer who wants a larger IPS screen could consider the Lenovo Legion Go S Powered by SteamOS, but its Ryzen Z2 Go chip is weaker than the Ally X.

Should you buy the $599 ROG Xbox Ally instead?
The base Ally is the value choice for Game Pass, indies and older AAA games. It has AMD Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB LPDDR5-6400, a 512GB M.2 2280 SSD, a 60Wh battery, a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz 500-nit IPS display and a 670g chassis. ASUS lists Hall-effect analog triggers, but it lacks the Ally X’s impulse triggers and USB4 port.
At $599, it delivers the same Xbox full-screen software concept for $400 less than the Ally X. The compromises appear in memory capacity, storage, battery endurance and demanding-game performance. ASUS claims up to a 20% gain over the original 2023 ROG Ally in selected Forza Horizon 5 and Gears of War: Reloaded tests at 720p, but that vendor figure should not be treated as an independent benchmark.
Buy it when price and portability matter more than 1080p headroom. Do not buy it expecting an X20-equivalent experience simply because the shell and software look similar.
What is the Acer Predator Atlas 8 alternative?
The Predator Atlas 8 targets buyers who want an 8-inch 16:10 display and Intel connectivity at roughly the X20’s sticker price. Best Buy launch reports around October 23, 2026 put it near $1,299.99. Depending on SKU, it uses Intel Arc G3 or G3 Extreme graphics, up to 24GB memory, dual Thunderbolt 4 and Wi‑Fi 7.
Its IPS panel is the decisive difference. Choose it for a taller workspace, Thunderbolt docking and Intel features; skip it if OLED contrast and HDR were the reason you were waiting for the X20. Confirm the processor, memory and actual in-stock price on the specific listing, because the Atlas 8 family has multiple configurations.

How do performance, battery and displays compare?
The table below keeps unlike test methods separate. ASUS figures are vendor claims; Tom’s Guide and IGN figures are published independent tests under their stated settings.
| Device | Display | Platform | Battery evidence | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ROG Xbox Ally X20 | 7.4-inch 1080p OLED, 120Hz VRR, about 600-nit typical / 1,400-nit HDR peak | Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB, 1TB, 80Wh | Tom’s Guide gaming rundown: 2h47 | About 756g |

| Legion Go 2 | 8.8-inch 1920×1200 OLED, up to 144Hz | Ryzen Z2 or Z2 Extreme, up to 32GB | Configuration- and game-dependent; no directly comparable figure here | About 920g |
IGN’s 2025 comparison of the Xbox Ally X, 2024 Ally X and Legion Go 2 recorded 3DMark Steel Nomad scores of 606, 539 and 588 respectively. In Cyberpunk 2077 at High with quality upscaling, the figures were 44, 36 and 37 fps; in Forza Horizon 5 High without ray tracing and with FSR Quality, they were 77, 65 and 65 fps. These results describe the Xbox Ally X, not an X20 test, but the shared Z2 Extreme hardware explains why the Ally X is the sensible proxy.
What software and game-library differences matter?
The Ally and Ally X boot into Windows 11 with an Xbox full-screen experience designed for controller navigation, Game Pass and Play Anywhere titles. Microsoft began rolling that mode to other Windows 11 handhelds in April 2026, so it is no longer safe to assume it is permanently exclusive to ASUS. Check whether a Claw, Legion or Atlas unit has the current Xbox app and firmware before buying for that interface.

Microsoft estimates the Xbox handheld mode can save up to 2GB of memory and reduce idle power by two-thirds compared with a full Windows shell. Windows still appears during setup, driver updates, desktop tasks and some sleep or download workflows. Digital Foundry and PCGamesN both described those transitions as the main friction of the Ally family.
Linux options are improving, but support varies. ComputingForGeeks cited a Notebookcheck-reported creator test in which Kingdom Come: Deliverance II at 17W reached 47 fps on Windows and 62 fps on Bazzite on an Ally X—one creator’s test with an older Bazzite build, not a universal uplift. Valve has added controller, TDP and audio support for the ROG Xbox Ally series, while X20 Bazzite support was still being tested in October 2026. Installing another operating system can affect drivers, suspend behavior, anti-cheat support and warranty troubleshooting.
Digital Foundry also reported that Advanced Shader Delivery works on the X20, reducing shader-compilation stutter compared with the Ally X’s launch-era software. Updates can bring similar features to older models, so software advantages should not be treated as permanent hardware exclusives.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the $300 OLED upgrade worth waiting for?
It is worth $300 only if you will notice OLED’s contrast and HDR every session. The X20’s 1,400-nit HDR peak, 30–120Hz VRR window and deeper blacks make dark games, cinematic scenes and high-contrast menus look substantially richer than the Ally X’s 500-nit IPS panel. Digital Foundry called the screen “beautiful and genuinely game-changing in much the same way that Switch OLED comprehensively bested its LCD stablemates.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIt is not a $300 performance upgrade. Frame rates, memory capacity, SSD size and battery capacity are effectively unchanged. The premium also buys TMR sticks, the transforming D-pad, grips and anniversary cosmetics. If you mostly play docked, connect to a monitor or use bright competitive games where IPS is adequate, the Ally X offers better value. If you play handheld in a dark room and care about HDR, wait for an X20 restock rather than paying an inflated reseller price.

What should you check before ordering an alternative?
- Confirm the exact model: RC73XA is the Xbox Ally X; RC73YA is the base Xbox Ally; RC74XA is the X20. Do not confuse RC73XA with the older 2024 ROG Ally X.
- Check seller and warranty: prioritize ASUS, Best Buy, Microsoft, Valve or the manufacturer’s authorized channel. Imported and used listings may not include US warranty service.
- Match your library: SteamOS favors Steam; Windows favors Game Pass, Epic, Battle.net and mods; Xbox full-screen mode does not eliminate every Windows desktop step.
- Read the power-mode test conditions: a 35W benchmark, a 17W battery test and a vendor’s 13W claim are different measurements. Never compare their hours or fps as one leaderboard.
- Check ports and accessories: Ally X and X20 provide USB4 plus USB 3.2 Gen 2. The base Ally has two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports. Thunderbolt 4 on the Claw and Atlas helps with docks and external GPUs.
- Plan storage: the Ally and Ally X use replaceable M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 drives, making a 2TB upgrade practical. X20 listings also specify PCIe 4.0 NVMe; confirm the exact replacement procedure before opening the chassis.
For TV or monitor play, ASUS sells ROG Bulwark docks (DG300 and the newer DG310) and a 100W charger dock. ASUS also markets the ROG XG Mobile external GPU for Ally X and X20 over USB4, with configurations advertised up to an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. Those accessories add cost and are not substitutes for a sold-out handheld.
Should you wait for an X20 restock or buy the Ally X?
Buy the Ally X now if you want the Z2 Extreme platform, Xbox software and an 80Wh battery without paying a reseller premium. Wait for the X20 if OLED HDR, TMR sticks or the anniversary design are the actual reason you chose it. Do not wait solely for higher frame rates: the X20 is a premium display-and-controls edition, not a new performance generation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did the ROG Xbox Ally X20 replace the Ally X?
No. ASUS kept the $599 Ally and $999 Ally X in its lineup after the X20 launched. The X20 uses the same Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform as the Ally X and mainly adds an OLED display, control upgrades and anniversary styling.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I install SteamOS or Bazzite on the X20?
Support was still in testing for the X20 in October 2026. Community Linux builds can improve the console-like experience, but suspend, audio, drivers and anti-cheat compatibility may differ from Windows, so treat installation as an enthusiast project.
Does the Ally X have an OLED screen?
No. The Xbox Ally X has a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS display rated at 500 nits. The 7.4-inch OLED panel belongs to the X20; comparison charts that show OLED on the Ally X are incorrect.
Where can I find an official X20 restock date?
ASUS had not announced one in the October 2026 reports. Check ASUS and authorized retailers directly, because inventory can return in batches and third-party listings may show imports or used units rather than new US stock.
Is the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ a good choice for Game Pass?
It runs Windows and can access Xbox apps and Game Pass, but it does not replicate every ASUS-specific Xbox handheld workflow. Its advantage is higher performance and 32GB memory; its 8-inch panel is IPS, so it is not an OLED replacement.
