The ROG Xbox Ally X remains the best all-round Windows handheld at its frozen US list price of $999.99, but it is not the best choice for every player. Choose the Steam Deck OLED for the simplest SteamOS experience, Lenovo Legion Go 2 for its large 8.8-inch OLED and detachable controls, the $599.99 ROG Xbox Ally for a cheaper Xbox interface, or the Legion Go S Powered by SteamOS if you specifically want Valve-supported SteamOS outside a Steam Deck. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is faster but costs roughly $1,700–$1,800, while the ROG Xbox Ally X20 adds OLED for $1,299.99 without materially increasing speed. This guide separates those trade-offs and the similarly named models that are easy to confuse.

What is the ROG Xbox Ally X, and why replace it?

The ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA, launched in the US on 16 October 2025) combines Windows 11 Home with Microsoft’s Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE). ASUS specifies an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor with eight Zen 5 cores and 16 threads, 16 RDNA 3.5 graphics compute units, a 50-TOPS NPU, 24GB of soldered LPDDR5X-8000 memory and a user-swappable 1TB M.2 SSD.

Its 7-inch 1920×1080 120Hz IPS touchscreen has FreeSync Premium, 500-nit brightness and Gorilla Glass. An 80Wh battery and 715g chassis are unusually substantial for a Windows handheld. Ports include USB4 Type-C (Thunderbolt 4 compatible, DisplayPort 2.1 and USB Power Delivery 3.0), a second USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, UHS-II microSD, 3.5mm audio and a fingerprint reader in the power button. ASUS includes three months of Xbox Game Pass.

FSE provides a controller-first launcher while leaving full Windows available for Steam, Epic, Battle.net, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Remote Play and anti-cheat games that do not work through Proton. TechPowerUp’s report says FSE uses 9% less RAM than standard Windows 11 mode, but it is still Windows: first-boot updates and account sign-ins can take about an hour, according to Boiling Steam’s report.

ASUS claims up to a 30% performance increase over the 2024 Ryzen Z1 Extreme ROG Ally X in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages, and up to twice the battery life in Hollow Knight: Silksong under its specified 720p, 60-fps-cap, low-quality Silent-mode test. Those claims do not compare the 2025 Ally X with the newer alternatives below.

Which handheld is the best alternative to the Ally X?

1. Steam Deck OLED: best software and lightest premium option

Choose the Steam Deck OLED when your library is primarily on Steam and you value suspend/resume, console-like updates and OLED contrast over Windows compatibility. Valve’s 7.4-inch HDR OLED runs at up to 90Hz, weighs about 640g and uses a 50Wh battery, custom Zen 2/RDNA 2 silicon and 16GB of memory. PCGamesN measured 3 hours 26 minutes at a 60-fps cap in one game and configuration.

Valve’s US prices rose on 27 May 2026 to $789 for 512GB and $949 for 1TB. That makes the 1TB Deck only about $51 less than the 1TB Ally X, although the Deck remains considerably lighter. It is not a Windows replacement: Xbox Game Pass PC, many launchers and anti-cheat games require workarounds or do not run. A Valve Verified badge also depends on the specific game’s Proton and anti-cheat support.

Buy from Valve when possible. ComputingForGeeks reported October reseller prices of about $855 for 512GB and more than $1,000 for 1TB, which can erase the normal savings. A refurbished 512GB unit around $629 was reported by Dexerto, but that stock and price are volatile.

2. Lenovo Legion Go 2: best display and tabletop design

Legion Go 2 is the right choice when the screen and physical layout matter more than carrying weight. The flagship Z2 Extreme version pairs AMD’s 16-CU-class graphics with up to 32GB of LPDDR5X-8000 and 2TB of M.2 2242 storage. Its 8.8-inch 1920×1200 OLED runs at 144Hz with variable refresh, and the TrueStrike controllers detach from a built-in kickstand; one controller can operate in a mouse-like FPS mode.

US pricing is configuration-dependent: about $1,049–$1,099.99 for a 16GB/1TB Ryzen Z2 model, $1,199.99 for 32GB/1TB Z2, $1,349.99 for 32GB/1TB Z2 Extreme and $1,479.99 for 32GB/2TB Z2 Extreme. A SteamOS edition starts at $1,199. Retail listings have been inconsistent, so always verify the processor, memory, storage and operating system together.

With controllers attached, Notebookcheck measured about 922g (roughly 920g in Lenovo and CNET materials), more than 200g heavier than the Ally X. The battery is 74Wh. IGN recorded 2 hours 17 minutes in Cyberpunk 2077 at high settings and 10 hours 52 minutes in a PCMark 10 office-style run.

At matched power limits, it is close to the Ally X rather than categorically faster. Shattered’s compilation of independent tests recorded 42.7 versus 41.3 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 25W (Ally X ahead), 32 versus 36 fps at 17W (Legion ahead), 59 versus 64 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p low and 76 versus 80 fps in Forza Horizon 5 at 1080p medium. NotebookCheck, Windows Central and Gizmodo reports put the Z2 Extreme model around 3,795–3,897 in 3DMark Time Spy; the base Z2 version was about 3,285 and is not an Ally X performance peer.

3. ROG Xbox Ally: the inexpensive Xbox-shaped choice

The non-X ROG Xbox Ally costs $599.99 and keeps the same 7-inch 1080p 120Hz panel and Xbox FSE interface. Its Ryzen Z2 A processor has four cores and eight threads, with 16GB memory, 512GB storage, a 60Wh battery and a 670g chassis. It is suited to indie games, older AAA releases and emulation, but it gives up the Ally X’s graphics headroom, eight additional gigabytes of memory and 20Wh of battery.

At this price it is about $190 below the 512GB Steam Deck OLED after Valve’s 2026 increase. It still runs Windows launchers and anti-cheat software, making it the straightforward pick for buyers who want Xbox presentation without paying for the Z2 Extreme.

4. Lenovo Legion Go S Powered by SteamOS: the official third-party SteamOS route

Valve’s SteamOS FAQ identifies Legion Go S as the only official Powered by SteamOS handheld besides Valve’s own hardware. The name covers materially different products. Part 83L30030US uses a four-core/eight-thread Ryzen Z2 Go, 16GB LPDDR5X-6400, 512GB storage, an 8-inch 1920×1200 120Hz VRR IPS panel, a 55.5Wh battery and about 740g; ComputingForGeeks saw it around $800–$830 in October 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Part 83n6000gus is a different SteamOS configuration with Ryzen Z1 Extreme, an 8-inch 1200p 120Hz panel, dual USB4 and microSD, listed by TechRepublic at $1,099.99. Do not treat the Z2 Go model as Ally X-class hardware. Gaming battery reports for the Z1 Extreme version were 2 hours 5 minutes in Red Dead Redemption 2 and 2 hours 30 minutes in BeamNG at 800p. Prices have moved sharply; GamingOnLinux reported a Z2 Go listing rising from $599.99 to $989.99 at Best Buy in April 2026.

5. ROG Xbox Ally X20: OLED without an Ally X speed upgrade

The X20 (model RC74XA) launched on 15 October 2026 at $1,299.99. It retains the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB memory and 80Wh battery, but changes to a 7.4-inch 1920×1080 120Hz OLED rated by FutureTweets at 600 nits SDR and 1,400 nits HDR peak. Weight is reported as 756g, or about 1.66lb, and several reports identify new TMR joysticks.

Gizmodo’s comparison, cited by LevelRig, found benchmark results within the margin of error of the Ally X. Stuff reported about 2 hours 5 minutes of Cyberpunk 2077 at 50% brightness for X20 versus roughly 1.5 hours in its Ally X testing, but those are separate test setups. Buy X20 only when OLED on Windows is worth $300 to you; it is not a generational performance upgrade. ASUS continues selling the Ally and Ally X alongside it.

6. MSI Claw 8 EX AI+: fastest, but poor value

The Claw 8 EX AI+ shipped on 23 June 2026 with Intel’s Panther Lake-class Arc G3 Extreme graphics, a 14-core arrangement cited in several recaps, up to 32GB LPDDR5X-8533 and a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD. Its 8-inch 1920×1200 120Hz VRR IPS display, dual Thunderbolt 4 ports and microSD Express slot appeal to performance-focused users.

MSI’s US listing for CG3EM-024US is $1,799; street listings in August and September were $1,699.99–$1,799.99. Tech-insider reports describe roughly 785g and an 80Wh battery, but MSI did not publish a standalone EX battery figure in the same way it did for the prior model, so treat that capacity as reported rather than a universal manufacturer specification.

PCGamer’s standardized handheld suite, quoted by FutureTweets, averaged 33 fps with a 16-fps 1% low for the Claw EX versus 26 fps and 19 fps for the Ally X. Tom’s Hardware reported nearly 70 fps in Metro Exodus at 800p medium. Tom’s Guide recorded 4 hours 10 minutes in a 3DMark gaming battery test, compared with 2 hours 56 minutes for Ally X in its separate test. These are source-reported results, not a single controlled comparison. Windows Central’s review called the price ultra-premium and suggested about $1,299 would be more sensible. Buy it only for maximum fps or Thunderbolt 4; its IPS panel and $700–$800 premium make it a poor general recommendation.

7. MSI Claw 8 AI+ (A2VM-001US): older Intel hardware at changing prices

The prior Claw 8 AI+ uses Core Ultra 7 258V, Arc 140V graphics, 32GB memory, an 8-inch 1200p 120Hz IPS display and an 80Wh battery at roughly 790g. Its launch price was $899.99 in January 2025, but MSI’s US store listed A2VM-001US at $1,299.99 on 3 October 2026; August street listings were about $1,149–$1,200. Club386 recorded 49 fps versus 33 fps for Steam Deck OLED in Cyberpunk 2077 at 17W. It is a different machine from the Claw 8 EX AI+ and only makes sense when discounted substantially.

8. GPD Win 5: specialist performance ceiling

GPD Win 5 targets enthusiasts who specifically need AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395: 16 cores, 32 threads, 40 graphics compute units, 32GB or more of unified memory and a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display. An Amazon listing was about $2,450, while a 128GB/2TB configuration on GPD’s site was reported up to $3,499. Its removable battery pack and extreme silicon make it a niche workstation-class handheld, not a sensible mainstream Ally X substitute.

Is the Legion Go 2 better than the Ally X?

Neither wins universally. Legion Go 2 gives you a much larger 8.8-inch OLED, detachable controllers, a kickstand, touchpad and up to 32GB/2TB; Ally X is about 200g lighter, costs $350 less than the comparable 32GB/1TB Z2 Extreme configuration, and has the more compact 7-inch Xbox-oriented design.

Both flagship processors use AMD Z2 Extreme-class silicon with 16 RDNA 3.5-class compute units. The independent figures above show differences of only a few frames at matched power, so screen size, controls and carrying weight should decide. Legion Go 2 also offers two USB4 ports, while Ally X combines one USB4 port, a second USB-C port, microSD and optional ROG XG Mobile eGPU support.

Is the Claw 8 EX worth $1,800?

Only if your priority is the highest available handheld frame rate and you will use its Thunderbolt 4 connectivity. Its 33-fps average in PCGamer’s suite versus 26 fps for Ally X demonstrates a lead, but the $1,699.99–$1,799.99 price is roughly $700–$800 higher and still buys an IPS screen. For most players, Ally X, Legion Go 2 or an OLED Steam Deck deliver a better balance of cost, display quality and software convenience.

Steam Deck versus ROG Ally in 2026: which should you buy?

Buy Steam Deck OLED for a mostly-Steam library, instant suspend/resume and OLED contrast. Buy the ROG Xbox Ally or Ally X when Game Pass PC, Epic or Battle.net, kernel-level anti-cheat games, or a Windows desktop are essential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SteamOS can run many Windows games through Proton, but unsupported anti-cheat prevents some live-service titles from working or earning Valve Verified status. The Ally family boots into Xbox FSE yet retains standard Windows, so it involves more updates and sign-ins but fewer launcher and anti-cheat restrictions. A single NotebookCheck-cited creator test found Bazzite reaching 62 fps versus 47 fps for Windows 11 in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II at 17W on Ally X, while another test in Hogwarts Legacy showed no gain; treat Linux performance changes as game-specific, not a universal 32% rule.

Which SteamOS alternative to Steam Deck should you choose?

Choose the Legion Go S only after checking its exact part number. The 83L30030US Ryzen Z2 Go version is closer to Deck-class performance, has a smaller 55.5Wh battery and costs around $800–$830; the 83n6000gus Z1 Extreme version costs about $1,099.99 and is materially faster. Legion Go 2’s SteamOS edition starts at $1,199 and adds the large OLED and detachable controls, but its weight remains about 920g with controllers.

SteamOS support on Ally-family hardware and Legion Go 2 is improving. Valve’s June notes added Ally-series controller, TDP and audio support; Legion Go 2 updates added controller, firmware and RGB support, with preliminary brightness work and a Forza Horizon 6 crash fix. Bazzite is an alternative Linux distribution, but OpenGamepadUI could not set TDP on Legion Go S in ComputingForGeeks’ report and Bazzite support for X20 was still being tested in late October.

Should you wait for the Ally X20 or Steam Deck 2?

Buy the Ally X20 now only for its OLED panel and Ally software. Its processor and memory match Ally X, and published comparisons found no meaningful speed increase. Valve is working on Steam Deck 2 but has announced no release date or price, so waiting is reasonable only if you are comfortable with an open-ended delay.

How do prices, weight and battery capacity compare?

Model US price context Weight Battery capacity Display
ROG Xbox Ally $599.99 670g 60Wh 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS
Steam Deck OLED $789 (512GB) / $949 (1TB) About 640g 50Wh 7.4-inch 1280×800 OLED, up to 90Hz
ROG Xbox Ally X $999.99 715g 80Wh 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS
Legion Go S SteamOS, 83L30030US About $800–$830 About 740g 55.5Wh 8-inch 1200p 120Hz IPS
ROG Xbox Ally X20 $1,299.99 About 756g 80Wh 7.4-inch 1080p 120Hz OLED
MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ $1,699.99–$1,799.99 About 785g (reported) 80Wh reported; not consistently manufacturer-stated for EX 8-inch 1200p 120Hz IPS
Legion Go 2 Z2 Extreme $1,349.99 (32GB/1TB) About 920–922g with controllers 74Wh 8.8-inch 1200p 144Hz OLED

Capacity is not runtime. IGN measured 2 hours 34 minutes of Cyberpunk 2077 on Ally X and 2 hours 17 minutes on Legion Go 2 in separate tests; the larger Ally X cell does not overcome the Go 2’s larger OLED in every workload. Steam Deck’s lower-power APU lets its 50Wh battery reach 3 hours 26 minutes at a capped 60 fps in PCGamesN’s test.

What should you check before ordering?

  • Confirm the name and year: 2024 ROG Ally X (Z1 Extreme), 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (Z2 Extreme) and 2026 ROG Xbox Ally X20 (OLED) are different products.
  • Check the processor in Legion Go listings: Ryzen Z2, Ryzen Z2 Extreme and SteamOS Z1 Extreme versions are not interchangeable.
  • Separate MSI models: Claw 8 AI+ uses Core Ultra 7 258V; Claw 8 EX AI+ uses newer Arc G3 Extreme graphics.
  • Verify retailer status: Ally X was marked unavailable on Amazon on 3 October 2026, while some listings were imports. Manufacturer stores are safer for warranty and regional keyboards.
  • Check your live-service games: verify anti-cheat support before choosing SteamOS or Bazzite.
  • Budget for storage: Ally X uses a replaceable off-the-shelf M.2 drive; microSD expansion is available on Ally X, Legion Go 2, Legion Go S and Claw models.

How we picked these alternatives

The list weighs the factors that change the buying decision rather than declaring one benchmark winner: US price and configuration clarity, display technology and size, measured performance figures attributed to their publishers, battery capacity and reported runtimes, weight, operating-system compatibility, controls, ports and upgradeability. Models with unresolved SKU or price differences are identified by part number, and premium products are ranked lower when their extra speed does not justify the price for general buyers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace the Ally X battery or storage?

The 1TB M.2 SSD is user-swappable with an off-the-shelf drive. The 80Wh battery is not presented as a user-replaceable module, so plan on service rather than a routine battery swap.

Does every Legion Go 2 support SteamOS?

A SteamOS edition launched in June 2026, but Windows editions remain widely sold. Confirm that the listing explicitly says SteamOS; a Windows Legion Go 2 will not become an official SteamOS model simply through a retailer firmware update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an external GPU work with these handhelds?

The Ally X has USB4 and ASUS markets optional XG Mobile eGPU support, while Legion Go 2 and Claw 8 EX provide two USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 ports respectively. Actual GPU compatibility depends on the enclosure, drivers and power supply.

Is 24GB enough memory for new PC games?

The Ally X and X20 share 24GB of soldered memory, which is more than the Steam Deck’s 16GB but less than 32GB Legion Go 2 and Claw configurations. Because graphics memory is shared with system RAM, resolution, texture settings and background applications affect how much headroom remains.
