Roblox parental controls work best when you link a parent account to your child’s account. That setup lets you change communication and spending settings remotely and receive activity or spending emails. If you need to approve something on the child’s device, Roblox also offers Parent mode, which uses an adulthood check and a six-digit PIN but does not provide real-time spending notifications.
In either mode, open Settings → Parental controls, select the child’s account, and use Communication or Spending restrictions. Chat is divided into several controls rather than one master switch, and the monthly spending limit does not cover gift-card redemptions or all console purchases. The labels, age rules and available features can vary by region, so review the settings periodically.
What are Roblox parental controls?
Roblox parental controls are account settings for communication, spending, blocked users and selected activity information. Roblox says families can change the settings as circumstances change; they are not a permanent lock that replaces supervision. The controls available to you depend on whether your account is linked, the child’s age, completion of an age check and, in some cases, the country or region.

A linked account is generally the more useful arrangement for a parent who wants to make changes from another device or receive transaction emails. Parent mode remains useful as a starting point: you verify adulthood, create a six-digit PIN for later approvals and can create a linked parent account afterward. Keep the PIN private so the child cannot approve their own requests.

How do I set parental controls on Roblox?
Use the same settings path whether you are changing chat or purchase controls. You need access to the parent or child account and, for some communication features, a completed age check and parental consent.
- Open Roblox Settings. On a computer, select the gear icon in the upper-right corner. In the mobile app, select More at the bottom-right, then Settings.
- Select Parental controls.
- Select the child’s account.
- Scroll to Settings you manage.
- Choose Communication for chat and messaging controls, or Spending restrictions for Robux and other purchases.
If no parent account is linked, choose Parent mode when Roblox presents it. Complete the adulthood verification, create the six-digit PIN and approve the requested setting on the child’s device. A linked parent account can be added later through the parental-controls area; linking is the route to remote management and spending emails.

How do I turn off Roblox chat?
Open Communication under the child’s managed settings and turn off each communication channel you do not want. Roblox does not present chat as one universal switch: experience chat, direct chat, parties, friends chat, Studio collaboration and Quick Words are separate choices.

To shut down ordinary in-game conversation, turn off both Experience chat and Direct chat. If you also want to prevent social communication outside an experience, review Chat and party with friends and set Friends chat to No one. Check Studio collaboration separately if the child uses Roblox Studio.

Why can’t I find a chat switch?
Roblox says users cannot turn on chat from their own settings until they complete an age check. The current help guidance says children ages 5–9 need parental consent for Experience chat, while users under 16 need parental consent for Direct chat. These thresholds and feature labels are current guidance accessed in November 2026 and may vary by region, so a missing option can reflect age or regional eligibility rather than a broken account.

Can I block Roblox messages from specific people?
Yes. Use Blocked users in the Communication section to review accounts blocked by either the child or a parent. Blocking is more targeted than disabling every chat channel, so it can be useful when the child should keep chatting with trusted friends but not with a particular account.
Remember that the separate Friends chat setting still controls the overall audience: All friends permits the broadest friend list, Trusted friends narrows it, and No one disables that category. Review the blocked-user list with your child so they know which account was blocked and why; Roblox’s settings do not replace reporting an account that violates platform rules.
How do I stop my child from spending Robux?
Set a monthly limit of zero if you want Roblox-account purchases blocked for the month, or choose a higher amount that matches your family’s budget. In the child’s managed settings, go to Spending restrictions → Monthly spending limit, enter an amount and select Update.

- The default setting is No limit, so a parent must actively choose a limit.
- The limit resets at the end of each calendar month and unused allowance does not roll over.
- When the child reaches the limit, Roblox displays a notice and prevents additional purchases for that month.
- Roblox says spending limits stop applying when the child turns 13, although spending notifications may remain available for older users.
A zero limit therefore blocks purchases covered by Roblox’s own account system, but it is not a universal payment lock. Before relying on it, check the exceptions in the next section and set controls on each console used by the child.

Spending notifications are separate from the monthly cap and require a linked parent account; Parent mode does not offer them. Under the child’s spending settings, choose one of these monitoring levels:

The thresholds and transaction counts are Roblox configuration figures, not a guarantee that every payment route will generate an email. A payment processor or recurring subscription can still send its own notice even when Roblox notifications are set to None. If you need an audit trail, choose All transactions rather than relying only on high-spend alerts.
What does the Roblox spending limit not cover?
Roblox’s own documentation warns that the monthly limit does not cover every way a child can obtain Robux or make a purchase. The two most important gaps are gift cards and console billing.
- Gift-card redemptions: Redeeming a Roblox gift card is outside the monthly spending limit. A zero limit will not stop a child from adding gift-card credit to the account.
- Console purchases: The limit may not apply on certain console devices. Roblox specifically says limits set on Roblox do not affect spending through Xbox.
- Separate payment notices: A recurring subscription or payment processor can issue its own email even when Roblox’s selected spending notifications are disabled.
For an Xbox household, use the console’s own family-safety, purchase-approval or spending-limit instructions in addition to Roblox settings. The Roblox control cannot substitute for an Xbox-level restriction. Roblox documents these exceptions in its Monthly Spending Limits help page.

How do age and account changes affect parental controls?
Roblox shifts responsibility toward the child as they get older. From age 13, Roblox says the child manages their own screen-time limits and blocking, and the Roblox spending limit no longer applies. For users 16 and older, a parent’s managed-settings view can be narrower and may show only notifications, spending notifications and activity updates.
These transitions mean a setting that was available last year may disappear after a birthday or age-status change. Explain the change to the child, review the communication and notification choices together, and confirm that the parent account is still linked. If a feature is missing, check age-check status and regional availability before assuming the account is malfunctioning.

Most apparent failures come from using the wrong management method or from an exception that Roblox documents. Work through this sequence:
- Confirm the account: Make sure you selected the child’s account under Parental controls, not your own Roblox profile.
- Confirm the path: Communication contains chat settings; Spending restrictions contains the monthly cap and notification choices.
- Check the management method: If you are in Parent mode, you will not receive real-time spending emails. Link a parent account for that function.
- Check age and consent: Chat availability depends on age check, parental consent and possibly region.
- Check the purchase route: Gift-card redemption and Xbox spending sit outside the Roblox monthly limit.
- Reopen the account: Sign out and back in, then revisit the settings after an age or consent change.
If spending continues despite a Roblox limit, identify whether the transaction came through a gift card, Xbox or another console. Apply the relevant device-level control and keep Roblox notifications enabled so you can see covered transactions.

A practical family setup checklist
For a younger child, start with a linked parent account, complete the age-check and consent steps Roblox requests, turn off Experience chat and Direct chat unless there is a clear reason to allow them, and set Friends chat to No one or Trusted friends. Review blocked users and Studio collaboration separately. Set a monthly spending limit, consider zero for a child who should not buy Robux, and select All transactions if you need a complete email record.

For an older child or teen, discuss which settings they can manage themselves as Roblox’s age-based controls change. Keep spending notifications active where available, and duplicate purchase restrictions on Xbox or any other console. Revisit the setup after birthdays, a move to another region, a new device or a change in how the child uses Roblox.
Roblox’s own summary is the right principle: “You can choose the settings that are right for your family and change them at any time.” Treat the controls as a layered plan—account settings, console controls, payment awareness and regular conversations—rather than as a single switch.

Why did my Roblox spending limit not stop a gift-card purchase?
Gift-card redemptions are explicitly outside Roblox’s monthly spending-limit system, so the account cap cannot block that redemption. If you want to control gift-card use, keep the cards and redemption codes with the parent and monitor the account balance separately.

Why is Direct chat unavailable even after I changed the setting?
