Yes, the Oculus Rift S has a 3.5 mm jack, but it is a headphone-output jack rather than a microphone input. The headset already includes a built-in microphone, and Meta lists that microphone separately from the integrated in-strap audio. You can plug wired earbuds or headphones into the left side for private listening, while voice input comes from the Rift S microphone or from a microphone connected to your PC. In the Oculus application or Windows sound settings, choose the output and input devices independently. A plug fitting the socket does not make its microphone contact usable: Antlion Audio’s FAQ identifies the Rift S port as output-only.

What audio hardware does the Rift S include?

The Rift S combines three audio elements: speakers built into the head strap, a built-in microphone, and a 3.5 mm socket for optional headphones. Meta’s Rift platform specifications describe the arrangement as “integrated headphones in-strap and microphone.” The 2019 launch announcement likewise describes an integrated audio system and a headphone jack for owners who prefer their own headphones.

The built-in speakers are the open listening option. They let you hear VR audio without covering your ears, while the socket provides a conventional wired output when you want more isolation or a different fit. Micro Center’s Rift S FAQ identifies the connector as a left-side 3.5 mm jack used for headphones instead of the built-in speakers.

Is the Rift S 3.5 mm jack a microphone input?

No. The available documentation supports treating the Rift S socket as headphone output only. Antlion Audio, a third-party microphone-accessory vendor, explicitly describes the Rift S 3.5 mm port as output-only. Meta’s own specifications and audio documentation identify the microphone as a separate Rift input device rather than as a function of that jack.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This distinction matters because many phone-style headsets use a four-contact TRRS plug that carries both stereo sound and microphone signals. A TRRS plug can physically fit a 3.5 mm socket, but physical fit does not prove that the socket is wired for microphone input. On Rift S, connect such a headset for listening only and continue using the Rift microphone or a PC-connected microphone for voice input.

How do I use wired headphones with the Rift S?

Connect ordinary wired stereo headphones or earbuds to the 3.5 mm socket on the left side of the headset. The jack is an optional output; you do not need headphones for the Rift S to produce sound because the strap has integrated speakers.

  1. Locate the 3.5 mm socket on the left side of the Rift S.
  2. Insert the headphone or earbud plug fully.
  3. Start the Oculus application and open its audio settings.
  4. Set the Rift headphone device as the output if it is not selected automatically, or choose the Windows default output when that is how your PC audio is configured.
  5. Play a known sound and adjust volume in the application, Windows, or on the headphones if they have their own control.

With headphones connected, audio is routed to them rather than the strap speakers. No cited source establishes a particular headphone model, impedance limit, adapter requirement, or measured volume level, so choose a standard 3.5 mm stereo set and verify fit and comfort for your own use.

Which microphone should I use for voice chat?

For normal Rift S use, select the headset’s integrated Rift microphone. If you prefer another microphone, connect it to the PC as an input device; do not plug it into the Rift S headphone jack.

Audio job Device choice Connection or setting
Hear VR audio without a cable Integrated in-strap speakers Use the Rift audio output
Hear VR audio privately Wired 3.5 mm headphones or earbuds Plug into the left-side jack
Send voice to an app Integrated Rift microphone Select Rift microphone as the input
Send voice from a separate mic PC-connected microphone Select that Windows input device

Meta’s Rift Audio documentation describes these as separate output and input identifiers. That separation is why adding headphones does not turn the jack into a microphone connection and why you can change the input without changing where you listen.

How do I select the Rift microphone and headphones in Oculus settings?

Use the Oculus application’s audio controls when you want Rift-specific devices. Meta’s documentation says the application can enable Rift headphones and the Rift microphone, or it can use Windows’ default audio devices.

  1. Open the Oculus application on the PC connected to the Rift S.
  2. Open the application’s audio settings.
  3. For output, choose the Rift headphone device when you want the headset jack or integrated Rift audio path; choose the Windows default output if another device should handle playback.
  4. For input, choose the Rift microphone for the headset’s built-in mic, or choose the external microphone listed by Windows.
  5. Apply the settings, then test in the voice-chat or recording application you intend to use.

Names can vary slightly with Oculus software revisions and Windows device lists, but the important check is that output and input are set independently. If another application has its own audio menu, verify its microphone selection there as well; a game or chat client can override a system-wide default.

What should I check when people cannot hear me?

Start with device selection rather than replacing hardware. The documented Rift setup allows either the Rift microphone or a Windows default input, so an incorrect selection is the first condition to verify.

  • In the Oculus audio settings, confirm that the intended microphone is selected as input.
  • In Windows sound settings, check that the same device is available and not disabled.
  • Open the voice-chat application’s own audio menu and select the intended input if it does not follow the system default.
  • Check that the application has permission to access the microphone and that any in-app mute control is off.
  • Speak while watching the application’s input meter, if it provides one, to distinguish a selection problem from an application-specific problem.
  • If you are using a headset with a TRRS plug, leave its microphone lead unused and test the Rift microphone or a PC-connected microphone instead.

These checks follow Meta’s documented device model; they do not establish a particular hardware failure or guarantee a fix for every software configuration. If the Rift microphone is missing from both Oculus and Windows, reconnect the headset and inspect the PC’s device list before assuming the 3.5 mm socket is involved.

What should I check when I hear no sound?

Confirm the output path first. The Rift can send audio to its integrated speakers, the left-side headphone jack, or a Windows-selected output, so a silent headset does not by itself indicate a bad microphone or a defective port.

  • In the Oculus application, identify whether Rift headphones or Windows default output is selected.
  • If using wired headphones, remove and reinsert the 3.5 mm plug firmly and test the same headphones on another source.
  • Check Windows volume and the application’s own volume or mute control.
  • Close and reopen the VR application after changing output devices so it refreshes its audio session.
  • For developers or applications that follow Meta’s PC VR requirements, verify that the Oculus app’s “Audio Output in VR” selection matches the device you expect.

Meta’s VRC.PC.Audio.1 requirement, updated July 31, 2024, says applications should target the output device selected in the Oculus app. Therefore, changing only a game’s or Windows’ setting may not produce the expected result when the application is following the Oculus selection.

Can I use a separate USB microphone with Rift S?

Yes, a microphone connected to the PC can be selected as the input device, but it is an alternative to the built-in Rift microphone, not an accessory for the headset jack. The USB microphone appears to Windows as its own input and should be chosen in the Oculus application or the voice application that will use it.

This arrangement can be useful when the microphone must sit closer to your mouth, when a desk microphone is already part of your setup, or when you need a different input for streaming. It adds a separate cable and another device-selection point, so ordinary voice chat does not require it. The Rift S’s integrated microphone remains the simplest input path supported by the headset specifications.

Does plugging in headphones disable the Rift microphone?

The hardware descriptions treat output and input as separate devices: the socket handles headphone output while the Rift microphone is listed independently. In practice, leave the Rift microphone selected as input after connecting headphones, then confirm the choice in the Oculus application or Windows. If a chat program switches to another microphone, change that program’s input back to the Rift microphone.

Do not assume that a headset’s inline microphone will become active merely because its speakers work through the 3.5 mm plug. The output-only description of the Rift S port is the reason to use the Rift microphone or a PC input for voice.

How do the Rift S audio choices compare?

The decision is easier when output and input are considered separately. You can combine the open speakers with the Rift microphone, or private headphones with the same microphone, without treating the 3.5 mm connector as a two-way headset port.

Setup What you hear What sends your voice Main trade-off
Standard Rift setup Integrated in-strap speakers Rift microphone No extra audio cable; sound is not isolated from the room
Private listening 3.5 mm wired headphones or earbuds Rift microphone More private listening; headphone cable runs from the headset
External-input setup Integrated speakers or wired headphones PC-connected microphone Separate input can be chosen; adds another device to configure

The table reflects the documented roles of the components rather than a performance ranking. No cited source supplies microphone quality measurements, speaker loudness tests, latency figures, or compatibility results for particular headphone models.

What did Meta document about Rift audio for developers?

Meta’s developer documentation uses distinct device identifiers for Rift output and input. Its Rift Audio page explains that users can enable Rift headphones and microphone in the Oculus application or use Windows default devices. For applications, VRC.PC.Audio.1 requires targeting the output selected in the Oculus app’s “Audio Output in VR” setting.

That requirement explains why a developer should expose or respect the Oculus-selected output instead of assuming that a physical plug determines the destination. It also reinforces the practical user advice: select the desired output in Oculus, select the desired input separately, and test both in the application that will carry the conversation.

What is the final answer about the Rift S mic jack?

The Rift S does have a 3.5 mm headphone jack, located on the left side, and it can drive wired headphones or earbuds. It does not provide microphone input through that jack according to the output-only description of the port. Use the integrated Rift microphone for voice, or connect a separate microphone to the PC and select it as the input device in Oculus or Windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where exactly is the Rift S headphone connector?

The connector is on the left side of the headset. It is a standard 3.5 mm socket intended for headphones, while the strap speakers remain the built-in alternative.

Why does a game keep using the wrong speakers after I plug in headphones?

Some PC VR applications follow the Oculus app’s “Audio Output in VR” selection. Set the desired output there first, then restart the game or refresh its audio settings so it detects the selected device.

Can a TRRS phone headset’s inline microphone work on Rift S?

The plug may fit, but the Rift S port is described as output-only. Use the headset’s integrated microphone or a microphone connected to the PC instead of relying on the inline mic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need external headphones to use Rift S voice chat?

No. The Rift S includes in-strap audio and an integrated microphone, so external headphones and a separate microphone are optional choices for listening preference or a different PC setup.
