For most large, blocky Minecraft builds, FDM is the better starting point. FDM printers use relatively straightforward thermoplastic filament, usually offer more practical build volume for chunky objects, and avoid the washing and UV post-curing required by resin. Choose resin when the model is small and intricate, and a smoother surface or very fine features matter more than print size and cleanup.
That is a process-level rule, not a promise about every printer. Measure the model, identify its smallest visible features, and compare those requirements with the build volume and published design limits of the specific machine. Printer calibration, orientation, supports, scale and finishing can change the result as much as the technology choice.

FDM (fused deposition modeling, also called FFF) builds an object by extruding melted thermoplastic filament layer by layer. Resin printing, commonly called SLA or a related vat-photopolymer process, selectively cures liquid photopolymer with light. The two methods therefore differ in the printer, the material, the slicing workflow and the cleanup required after the print.
How FDM makes a Minecraft model
An FDM hot end feeds filament—often PLA for decorative models—through a heated nozzle. The nozzle lays down roads of plastic that solidify into each layer. Layer lines can remain visible, especially on sloped surfaces, but the process is well suited to large, solid or chunky geometry.

How resin makes a Minecraft model
A resin printer forms layers in a vat of liquid photopolymer. Light cures selected areas, producing parts with fine edges and a comparatively smooth surface. The uncured resin must then be washed away and the part must be post-cured according to the resin and printer manufacturer’s instructions.
Formlabs characterizes the choice as a trade-off rather than a universal winner: “It would be an oversimplification to say that either technology is universally better or worse.” That applies particularly well to Minecraft-style models, where a huge block-built structure and a tiny detailed character have very different requirements.
Which process is better for the size of your Minecraft model?
Use FDM for larger or chunkier models, provided the model fits the printer’s build volume. Use resin for smaller pieces that fit comfortably in the vat and benefit from fine surface detail. Always compare the model’s actual dimensions—including the diagonal space needed after rotation—with the published build volume of the printer you are considering.
| Decision axis | FDM/FFF tends to suit | Resin/SLA tends to suit |
|---|---|---|
| Model size | Larger builds and chunky voxel structures, limited by the machine’s build volume | Small models and parts that fit the resin build area |
| Visible detail | Large features where some layer texture is acceptable | Fine features and smoother surfaces |
| Material | Common thermoplastic filament such as PLA | Liquid photopolymer resin |
| Workflow | Generally simpler, lower-mess material handling | Washing, post-curing and more involved handling |
| Cost pattern | Material is generally less expensive in the cited comparisons | Resin and post-processing supplies add cost; current totals vary by region and setup |
These are tendencies, not guarantees. A carefully oriented resin part can fail, and a well-tuned FDM printer can produce excellent small details. The model’s scale, wall thickness, supports, calibration and finishing method all affect the outcome.
Why build volume matters for voxel structures
Minecraft architecture is often made of repeated cubes, walls, terrain slabs and other broad shapes. Those forms can become surprisingly large when printed at a scale that makes them useful as a display piece. FDM machines commonly provide more practical room for such objects, and a large FDM print can often be split into sections when a single piece will not fit.
Splitting is not free: it creates seams, alignment work and additional finishing. Nevertheless, it is usually a more natural strategy for a large blocky build than trying to fit the entire object into a small resin vat. Do not assume that a printer’s advertised dimensions equal usable space; leave room for the model’s orientation and any support structures.

A miniature character, tool, mob, ornament or tightly detailed scene may fit easily in a resin printer while exposing the weaknesses of FDM at very small scales. Resin can reproduce narrow ridges, tiny facial features and crisp transitions that would otherwise merge into adjacent FDM lines. The benefit only exists if those details are large enough to survive the chosen scale and the particular resin printer’s capabilities.
Does resin really capture more detail than FDM?
Generally, yes for small features and smooth surfaces, but published design limits are estimates rather than guarantees. Formlabs reports an estimated minimum SLA wall thickness of 0.2 mm and about 0.8 mm for FDM. Those figures are vendor design rules associated with specific equipment and are not a promise that every resin printer will produce a 0.2 mm Minecraft feature or that every FDM printer is limited to 0.8 mm.
What the wall-thickness figures mean
A wall must be thick enough to form reliably, remain attached during printing and survive handling. A 0.2 mm SLA estimate and a 0.8 mm FDM estimate illustrate the relative design margin, not a universal pass/fail threshold. Nozzle diameter, layer settings, resin formulation, exposure, cooling, orientation and the shape’s unsupported spans can all change the practical limit.
For a voxel model, inspect the thinnest bars, railings, vines, weapon handles, horns and decorative ledges. If a feature is below the process’s reliable range, enlarge it, merge it into a stronger shape or remove it. This is an application decision: preserving a recognizable silhouette is usually more useful than preserving a mathematically exact but fragile voxel dimension.

How surface finish changes the decision
Resin parts normally start with a smoother visible surface, while FDM parts show layer lines and may need sanding, filler or other finishing if a display-smooth result is important. A blocky Minecraft build may not need a flawless surface because its visual language is intentionally faceted and grid-based. Conversely, a close-up figure or an intricate prop can make layer texture distracting.

Do not select resin solely because a product photo looks smooth. The final appearance also depends on support placement, washing, curing, primer, paint and the lighting under which the model will be viewed.
What is the workflow difference after the print finishes?
FDM usually has the simpler path from finished layer to usable object. Resin adds a dedicated cleanup and curing stage, and that stage requires appropriate handling of liquid photopolymer and contaminated wash materials.
Typical FDM finishing
- Let the part cool and remove it from the build surface using the printer’s recommended procedure.
- Detach supports if the print used them.
- Trim small support marks and sand or fill surfaces if the model needs a smoother finish.
- Prime and paint only after the part is clean and fully prepared for the chosen coating.
FDM is described in the cited Formlabs comparisons as lower mess and lower hazard than resin in ordinary handling. That does not eliminate heat, moving parts or material-specific precautions; follow the printer and filament manufacturer’s instructions.
Recommended Free Tools
Typical resin finishing
- Remove the print and supports according to the printer and resin manufacturer’s procedure.
- Wash the part to remove uncured resin using the specified cleaning method and liquid.
- Dry it thoroughly.
- Post-cure it for the time and exposure recommended for that resin and printer.
- Inspect, trim support marks and perform any sanding, priming or painting.
Resin cleanup is not an optional cosmetic step. Unwashed or under-cured material can remain tacky and compromise the part. Use the safety equipment, ventilation, containers and waste-disposal method specified by the resin manufacturer; the general comparison here does not replace those instructions.
How the extra work affects a Minecraft project
For one small, detailed figure, the added resin steps may be a reasonable exchange for a smoother result. For a set of large terrain tiles or a play-scale structure, washing many parts and managing post-curing can become the dominant task. Include that labor, consumables and workspace in the decision rather than comparing only the printer’s purchase price.
How should you prepare a Minecraft model before slicing?
Verify geometry, thickness, scale and file compatibility before you open the slicer. A model that looks correct on screen can still contain gaps, paper-thin faces or dimensions that are impractical for the chosen process.
1. Check that the mesh is watertight
A watertight, or manifold, mesh defines a closed solid. Repair open edges, internal faces and self-intersections in your modeling or repair software before slicing. A slicer may otherwise omit surfaces, create unexpected holes or generate invalid toolpaths.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Confirm the scale
Decide what one in-game block represents in the physical model and set that scale explicitly. Then inspect the smallest details at the final size, not at the oversized modeling view. Fine voxel features may need to be thickened or enlarged so they can be printed and handled.
3. Check wall thickness and fragile projections
Use the printer’s own design guidance as the starting point. The Formlabs figures—approximately 0.2 mm for certain SLA design rules and 0.8 mm for FDM—show why the same digital feature may need different treatment in each process. Treat them as estimates tied to the cited equipment, not as universal specifications.
4. Export a slicer-compatible file
STL is a common default for 3D printing. OBJ and 3MF are also widely accepted by many slicers, as Maxon notes. Check the exact slicer and printer documentation because support for colors, units, textures and multiple objects differs between formats.
5. Inspect units and object placement
Import the file and verify its dimensions numerically. Unit mismatches can turn a model into a miniature or an object too large for the build area. Place separate components as distinct objects when you need to print them in different colors, orientations or materials.

How do orientation and supports affect a blocky model?
Orientation determines which faces carry weight, where layer lines appear and where supports touch the model. A cube-heavy object may look support-free from above but still contain overhangs, bridges, arches or suspended details that need a deliberate strategy.
Orient for strength and appearance
- Keep broad, important faces aligned to produce the intended visual grid.
- Avoid placing a fragile projection so that its entire weight is carried by a tiny contact area.
- Rotate detailed faces away from support contact when possible, because support removal can leave marks.
- For a part that will be assembled, orient mating surfaces so they remain dimensionally useful after printing and finishing.
Support trade-offs in FDM
FDM supports consume filament and leave contact marks, but they can make an overhanging roof, arch or character accessory printable. An orientation that reduces supports may increase visible layer stepping or weaken a narrow feature. Preview the toolpath and inspect every overhang rather than accepting the slicer’s automatic result blindly.
Support trade-offs in resin
Resin parts commonly require supports to hold the model during the print and to manage the forces involved in lifting layers from the vat. Support scars are especially noticeable on smooth faces, so place them on hidden or easily finished areas where the geometry allows. A dense support forest also increases cleanup time and resin use.
How much does each process cost for a Minecraft project?
There is no reliable universal total without the printer, region, model size and finishing plan. The cited comparisons broadly associate FDM with lower material cost, while resin adds liquid material, washing and post-curing supplies. They do not establish current local prices or a Minecraft-specific total-cost comparison.
Count the full FDM cost
- Filament consumed by the model and its supports.
- Failed-print material and any purge or calibration material.
- Build-surface maintenance and replacement parts as applicable to the printer.
- Finishing supplies such as sandpaper, filler, primer and paint.
- Assembly hardware or adhesive if the build is split into sections.
PLA is a relevant filament for compatible FDM printers, but verify filament diameter and printer compatibility before buying. The material’s listed cost alone will not predict the cost of a large failed print or a heavily supported design.
Count the full resin cost
- Resin consumed by the model, supports and material left in the vat or cleaning workflow.
- Wash liquid and containers or equipment specified by the resin system.
- Protective equipment, ventilation and waste handling.
- Replacement films, screens or other printer-specific consumables where applicable.
- Post-curing equipment or supplies.
- Finishing materials and the labor required to remove support marks.
Compare like with like: a lightly supported FDM model and a heavily supported resin model do not consume resources in the same way. If you are using a print service, ask which process, material, support strategy and finishing level are included rather than comparing a single headline price.
What should you choose for common Minecraft model types?
| Model you want to make | Likely starting choice | Reason and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Large house, castle, terrain section or chunk | FDM | Chunky geometry and larger practical build volume usually outweigh the smoother resin surface; split the model if necessary. |
| Small character, mob or figurine | Resin when fine detail is central | Small features and smooth surfaces benefit from resin, provided the part and its supports fit the vat. |
| Simple block, ore cube or terrain tile | FDM | Large planar faces do not usually require resin’s finest detail, and FDM simplifies handling. |
| Intricate tool, weapon or ornament | Resin for the smallest versions | Thin projections may be easier to resolve in resin, but enlarge or reinforce features that remain fragile. |
| Many repeated pieces for a diorama | Depends on scale and quantity | FDM favors larger repeated parts and lower-mess handling; resin favors small detailed parts but multiplies washing and curing work. |
The table is a starting framework, not a substitute for measuring the actual model. A large detailed statue may need to be split for either process, while a low-detail miniature may print perfectly well on FDM at a larger scale.

Questions to ask a service
- Which process will be used: FDM/FFF or resin/SLA?
- What are the usable build dimensions and minimum feature or wall guidance for that machine?
- Are washing, post-curing, support removal, sanding or painting included?
- How will the model be split and reassembled if it exceeds the build area?
- What file formats, unit conventions and mesh-repair requirements apply?
Do not assume that a service’s “high detail” option means resin or that “plastic” means a particular filament. Obtain the process and finishing details in writing before approving a large or fragile model.
What are the most common failure modes?
The model is too large
Scale it down, split it into keyed sections or choose a printer with a larger usable build volume. Test the split and the intended assembly before committing to the full model.
Tiny details disappear
Increase the feature’s thickness or overall scale, simplify adjacent geometry and confirm the printer-specific design guidance. A digital voxel edge that is technically present may not be visually or mechanically meaningful at the chosen size.

The print has unexpected holes or missing faces
Repair the mesh, remove internal or self-intersecting geometry and re-export a watertight file. Reopen the repaired file in the slicer and inspect the layer preview before printing.
Supports damage visible surfaces
Change orientation so supports land on hidden faces, reduce unnecessary support density and reserve sanding or filler for areas where marks cannot be avoided. In resin, also consider whether a different tilt reduces support contact on a character’s face or another focal feature.
A resin part remains sticky
It may not have been washed or cured according to the resin maker’s procedure. Stop handling it as a finished object, follow the specified cleaning and curing sequence, and use the manufacturer’s safety and disposal instructions.
An FDM surface looks rougher than expected
Check calibration, layer preview, cooling and orientation, then decide whether the model’s blocky style actually requires cosmetic smoothing. If a display finish is essential, budget for sanding, filler and primer rather than expecting the raw print to provide it.
How do file licensing and Minecraft branding affect a printable model?
A model being downloadable does not automatically mean it is authorized for every use. Check the specific file’s license, creator terms and any restrictions on modification, redistribution, commercial use or printed sales before you print or share it.
The process comparison does not establish a particular marketplace, creator or licensing arrangement. Treat a third-party file as unverified until its own terms clearly grant the use you need, and do not describe an unofficial model as an official game product.
What is the practical decision rule?
Measure first, then choose the process that gives the model enough physical margin. Start with FDM when the build is large, chunky, repeated or intended to be produced with the least complicated handling. Choose resin when the part is small enough for the vat and its value depends on fine detail or a smoother surface that justifies washing, curing and additional safety controls.
Before ordering a printer or service, make a quick checklist:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Record the model’s finished width, depth and height, including any planned split lines.
- Identify the thinnest and most fragile visible features.
- Compare those measurements with the exact printer’s build volume and design guidance.
- Confirm that the mesh is watertight, correctly scaled and accepted by the slicer.
- Plan orientation, supports, assembly and finishing.
- Price material, failed prints, cleanup supplies and your own time—not just the machine or file.
This approach avoids treating “resin” or “FDM” as a universal quality label. It matches the process to the Minecraft model you actually intend to build.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one 3D printer switch between FDM filament and liquid resin?
No. FDM and resin printing use fundamentally different hardware and material systems, so a normal filament printer cannot be converted into a vat-resin printer by changing a spool. Plan on separate equipment or use a service that offers the process you need.
Do I need to make a Minecraft model hollow before printing?
Not automatically. Hollowing can reduce material in some resin workflows, but it introduces drainage, wall-thickness and cleanup decisions; use the printer and resin manufacturer’s guidance and ensure any enclosed liquid has a safe way to escape.
Can I combine FDM and resin parts in one Minecraft diorama?
Yes, a mixed build can use FDM for a large base or terrain and resin for small detailed figures or props. Design connection points and finishing colors deliberately, because the two materials can have different surface textures and may require different preparation.
