Choose by the fantasy, not the Capcom logo. Start with Resident Evil if you want fear, puzzles, scarce resources and a finite story; choose Devil May Cry if expressive solo combat and style ranks are the point; choose Monster Hunter if you want a long-term hunt-and-craft hobby, especially with friends. For a single broadly satisfying purchase, Resident Evil 4 Remake is the safest all-round starting point. Devil May Cry 5 remains Capcom’s combat showcase, while Monster Hunter World + Iceborne is the most complete long-term package and Wilds is the current-generation entry.
These series overlap only at the publisher level. Resident Evil is survival horror or action horror, Devil May Cry is character action, and Monster Hunter is a repeatable boss-hunt-and-upgrade loop. The right choice depends on your preferred tone, session length, social play and tolerance for mastery.

Is Resident Evil the right Capcom series for you?
Resident Evil is for players who enjoy tension created by limited resources and dangerous spaces. You decide whether to spend a healing item, carry ammunition or leave a useful object behind. As Michael Beckwith wrote in Metro on 16 October 2026, “While it is by no means the first horror game, Resident Evil is the series that coined the term survival horror.”
Modern entries split into two identities that should not be confused. Survival-horror Resident Evil uses darkness, puzzles, constrained inventory and unpredictable threats: Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil 7 biohazard and Grace Ashcroft’s sections in Requiem. Action-horror Resident Evil emphasizes shooting, set-piece escalation and more generous combat: Resident Evil 4 Remake, Village and Leon Kennedy’s sections in Requiem.
Where should you start with Resident Evil?
- Resident Evil 4 Remake (24 March 2023): the broadest introduction. It moves from village to castle with exceptional pacing and combat, while being less frightening than RE2 or RE7. G2A News called it “probably the best all-round starting point,” and Metro ranked it first among the mainline games in its 2026 anniversary list.
- Resident Evil 2 Remake (25 January 2019): choose this when you want police-station pressure, route planning and the pursuit threat of Mr. X. At 20.38 million lifetime units, it is Capcom’s best-selling Resident Evil episode as of 30 September 2026.
- Resident Evil Requiem (27 February 2026): choose this for the current mainline conversation. Grace provides first-person survival horror while Leon provides third-person action. Capcom lists a PS5 Metascore of 86 as of 27 October 2026, and lifetime sales of 8.51 million.
- Resident Evil 7 biohazard: the first-person Baker-house experience is the most concentrated modern horror choice if you want dread over spectacle.
You do not need to play Resident Evil in release order. The remakes are designed as on-ramps, and RE2 Remake and RE4 Remake work as largely self-contained showcases even though the wider story connects Raccoon City, later bioterrorism plots and recurring characters. Resident Evil 6 is a poor first choice because its spectacle-first structure weakens the survival-horror identity; Resident Evil 5 is more enjoyable with a co-op partner and is less convincing as a solo introduction.
How large is Resident Evil in 2026?
Capcom reported 218 million Resident Evil units — Capcom, 2026 — making it the company’s largest series. Individual lifetime figures through 30 September 2026 were 20.38 million for RE2 Remake, 18.87 million for RE7, 17.15 million for RE4 Remake, 16.27 million for Village, 14.93 million for RE3 Remake and 8.51 million for Requiem. Capcom’s official table gives RE4 Remake as 1,715 units in ten-thousand-unit scale, or 17.15 million; the larger 17.5-million figure sometimes repeated elsewhere is a rounding discrepancy.
Who should choose something else?
Resident Evil is a poor fit if you want uninterrupted melee-combo expression, a weekly multiplayer hobby or a game suitable for children. Screenwise’s summary is blunt: “This is where the Capcom logo stops being family-friendly.” The line is rated Mature, and there is no genuinely lightweight horror entry simply because one game is more action-oriented.
Is Devil May Cry 5 still worth playing in 2026?
Yes, if your priority is combat depth rather than a new release. Devil May Cry 5 launched on 8 March 2019 and remains the clearest demonstration of Capcom’s character-action design. The Reading Order described it as “the gold standard for character action,” while GameRant said its “ridiculously deep combat system” encourages repeated play to experiment with tools rather than merely unlock alternate endings.

What makes DMC5’s combat different?
DMC5 gives three characters fundamentally different systems. Nero uses interchangeable Devil Breaker arms: seven base arms, or 11 with downloadable content. Dante carries four melee weapons, four guns and four stances, switching among them during combos. V fights through a crow, panther and golem, then closes out weakened enemies directly. Contextual arena attacks, such as throwing Goliath through a tower, add spectacle without replacing the underlying execution challenge.

You are not simply trying to survive; you are trying to maintain a style rank while combining movement, weapons and enemy states. That makes DMC5 a better fit for players who enjoy practice and self-imposed improvement than for players seeking fear or a loot treadmill.
Where should you start with Devil May Cry?
Start with Devil May Cry 5; previous games are optional context, not prerequisites. The Switch 2 version, Devil May Cry 5 Devil Hunter Edition, launched on 23 June 2026. Devil May Cry 4 is a useful historical stop if you specifically want its dual Dante-and-Nero structure; TheGamer listed its main campaign at 12 hours via How Long To Beat, but no independent HowLongToBeat averages were available for DMC5 in the supplied material.
DMC5 is a solo campaign with substantial replay value, not a live-service grind. It is rated Mature for blood, partial nudity, strong language and violence. If you want inventory puzzles, jump scares or four-player hunts, Resident Evil or Monster Hunter will fit better.
Why is DMC5 still a live product?
Capcom reported 14.78 million DMC5 units — Capcom, 2026, including 1.83 million units in the six months ending 30 September 2026. GamesIndustry.biz reported that Capcom credits the continuing catalog performance to the Switch 2 rollout and pricing aligned with the Netflix series. A third season of the Netflix Devil May Cry adaptation was announced in June 2026. Capcom’s disclosed 2026–2027 release list contains no Devil May Cry 6, so DMC5 is the current purchase rather than a stopgap before a confirmed sequel.

Should you choose Monster Hunter World, Rise or Wilds?
Choose Monster Hunter when the loop itself sounds rewarding: learn a monster, defeat it, carve materials, craft better equipment and repeat against a harder target. Screenwise calls it “a hobby,” not a game a child picks up for 20 minutes, and GameSpot described Monster Hunter as a “forever game” that can occupy thousands of hours for committed players.

Monster Hunter’s 14 weapons in Wilds are not minor loadout variations; each changes the rhythm of play. Matt Kim of IGN wrote, “The difference is transformative: when maining a big sword, Monster Hunter echoes the considered combat and careful approach of Dark Souls; using Dual Blades, it’s reminiscent of Devil May Cry’s action-focussed combat.” Great Sword rewards deliberate commitment, Dual Blades favors rapid aggression and ranged Bowguns require ammunition planning. Healing still means sheathing your weapon, so positioning and animation reads matter as much as damage numbers.
Monster Hunter World + Iceborne: the complete long-term package
World is the safest recommendation when you want a mature, content-rich foundation and do not need the newest systems. Tracking footprints, reading monster behavior and committing to slower animations create a deliberate rhythm. GameSpot ranked World its top Monster Hunter choice in October 2025, and G2A News still regards World + Iceborne as one of Capcom’s best complete packages.
World reached 30.83 million lifetime units — Capcom, 2026, remaining Capcom’s best-selling individual title and adding 1.17 million units in the latest six-month period. Iceborne supplies the expansion-scale endgame, making the Master Edition the practical purchase when available.
Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak: faster and more portable
Rise is the better fit for short sessions and handheld play. Wirebugs speed up traversal and recovery, Palamutes provide mobility, and monsters are visible on the minimap rather than requiring the same tracking emphasis as World. Gematsu listed Rise at 19.3 million units as of 30 June 2026. Sunbreak extends the hunt-and-craft loop with a larger endgame.
Monster Hunter Wilds: the current-generation flagship with caveats
Wilds launched on 28 February 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC, sold more than 10 million copies in its first month according to GameSpot, and brings living ecosystems, cinematic locales and Focus Mode. Its combat reaches a series peak for some players, and its guidance makes the opening more approachable.
That accessibility is also the source of veteran criticism. GameSpot highlighted excessive guidance and early story-multiplayer restrictions, while IGN noted in October 2026 that Wilds was absent from Capcom’s latest H1 top-ten unit ranking, had received a permanent price cut and faced community complaints about its direction. Treat Wilds as a commercially huge but critically mixed current flagship, not an automatic replacement for World.

The Switch 2 version of Wilds is scheduled for 4 December 2026. Its expansion, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, is planned for 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2 and PC. Monster Hunter Outlanders launched on mobile on 29 October 2026; it uses a third-person hunt format rather than an augmented-reality walking model, but it is a taste of the series rather than a substitute for World or Wilds.

Monster Hunter has reached 132 million series units — Capcom, 2026, second only to Resident Evil among Capcom’s major series. Its value is less about a single campaign than the social and mechanical loop: solo players can use Palicoes and followers, but four-player hunts are where weapon roles, openings and mistakes become a shared activity.
How do time, friends and age change the choice?
Think about the shape of your available time before looking at graphics or release dates.
- Short, complete sessions: Resident Evil and Devil May Cry offer directed campaigns that can be finished and replayed. They are easier to fit around a busy schedule because progress is mission- or chapter-based.
- Long-term routine: Monster Hunter expects repeated preparation, hunts, crafting and optional objectives. It is rewarding when you want one game to occupy a season, but inefficient if you only have one evening a month.
- Solo concentration: Resident Evil’s pressure and DMC5’s style grading are designed around individual decisions.
- Shared evenings: Monster Hunter’s four-player hunts create the strongest social payoff, although the early story structure in Wilds can limit co-op access until progression requirements are met.
- Age and intensity: Wilds is rated Teen for blood, crude humor, violence, users interacting and in-game purchases. Resident Evil and Devil May Cry are Mature; check the specific entry’s rating before buying for a younger player.
What should you buy on current hardware?
Current platform timing matters more than a universal “best game” label. Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 on 16 October 2026. DMC5 Devil Hunter Edition is already available there, while Wilds follows on 4 December 2026. On PS5, Xbox Series and PC, the three series are represented by their current flagships: Requiem, DMC5 and Wilds, with World + Iceborne remaining the alternative for a deeper, established Monster Hunter package.
Capcom’s H1 sales mix shows why digital storefronts matter: 92.4% of units were digital, 57.1% were PC digital, 35.3% were console digital and 7.6% were physical. Those percentages cover Capcom’s entire H1 software business, not one individual game or platform. Prices and stock change by region and storefront, so choose the edition named above rather than assuming a boxed version is available.

What does Capcom’s 2026–2027 slate change?
The near-term pipeline reinforces the same fit test rather than replacing it. Resident Evil has Requiem and a planned 2027 Resident Evil Veronica remake. Monster Hunter has Wilds on Switch 2 and Ascendance in 2027. Devil May Cry has a Switch 2 edition and a continuing Netflix tie-in, but no announced DMC6 on Capcom’s disclosed slate.

Capcom’s H1 report recorded 36.86 million total software units, up from 23.85 million a year earlier, with 89.4% sold overseas. Net sales were ¥120.8 billion ($764.2 million), up 49% year over year; Digital Contents net sales were ¥85.1 billion ($538.4 million), up 70.8%. Capcom said, “Continued sales growth in the Resident Evil series drove earnings,” alongside “Highest-ever Total and Catalog unit sales for a H1 period.” Those figures explain why all three lines remain active, but they do not change which genre suits you.

Will there be a Devil May Cry 6 soon?
