Yes. Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 both support local split-screen co-op and online co-op. For couch play, connect a second compatible controller; for online play, use the game’s host or join options. The exact menus vary by game version and platform, so the steps below identify where Capcom’s manuals document them.
Choose local or online co-op
| Option | What you need | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Local split-screen | One console and a second compatible controller. | Both players use the same console. In RE5, player two can join during offline play; in RE6, select Split in Screen Mode and join at the character-selection prompt. Capcom’s RE5 manual and RE6 manual document these flows. |
| Online co-op | Each player needs access to the game and an online connection; the host must allow the friend to join. | One player hosts or creates a session, and the other joins through the game’s online menu. Platform service and subscription requirements depend on the platform and are not established by the cited manuals. |
Play Resident Evil 5 together
Join locally in split-screen
- Start offline play and connect a second controller.
- Press START on the second controller to join as the partner. Capcom’s PS3 and Xbox 360 manuals say the game pauses and returns to item management before resuming in split-screen at the previous checkpoint.
- To stop co-op, open the pause menu and choose Quit. Menu wording can differ in other editions.
Host or join an online game
Capcom’s Xbox 360 manual describes online co-op and system-link co-op between two Xbox 360 consoles. For an online session, the host starts through the Network screen after choosing New Game or Chapter Select. The guest selects Join Game, then Quick Match or Custom Match. The PS3 manual also documents online co-op through PlayStation Network. These are instructions for the documented editions, not confirmation that a legacy service or subscription requirement applies today.

Play Resident Evil 6 together
Set up local split-screen
- Connect at least two controllers.
- At the relevant setup screen, choose Split under Screen Mode.
- At Character Select, have player two press START to join.
Capcom’s PS3 and Xbox 360 instructions say split-screen is available in Campaign and The Mercenaries. Its PS4/Xbox One quick-start page also describes selecting Split and joining with the second player. The quick-start manual states: “You can play a co-op multiplayer game when you select "Split" in Screen Mode.” Button prompts can vary by console.
Host a private session or join a friend
- For a hosted game, choose a network rather than Offline, and make sure Partner Join is not set to Don’t Allow.
- To play specifically with a friend in Capcom’s quick-start flow, set Partner Join to Private, start the game, and wait in the co-op lobby.
- Your friend selects Join Game and Quick Match. The detailed manual also documents Custom Match.
Check your edition and platform
Capcom’s RE5 manual index covers PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. The detailed joining steps above come from particular editions, so do not assume every menu has the same labels. RE6’s manuals likewise span older and newer console instructions. Consult the manual for the exact edition you own if a prompt or menu differs. A second controller is required for couch co-op; the manuals do not establish compatibility for every current controller model.
