Renesas announced the RZ/V2N on March 11, 2025, as a mid-class vision AI microprocessor for embedded systems. Its headline rating is up to 15 TOPS in sparse operation—not dense performance; the datasheet lists up to 4 dense TOPS. The chip combines a DRP-AI3 accelerator, four Cortex-A55 application cores, a Cortex-M33 control core, and two MIPI CSI-2 camera channels.
What the RZ/V2N is—and what “15 TOPS” means
The RZ/V2N is an embedded vision AI MPU, not a finished camera or consumer AI device. Renesas lists it as an active product and positions it for camera-centered systems such as monitoring cameras, driver monitoring systems (DMS), and mobile robots. The company’s product page describes the device as a “15TOPS Quad-Core Vision AI MPU with 2-Camera Connection.”

The “15 TOPS” figure needs a qualification: Renesas’s RZ/V2N Group Datasheet, revision 1.20, dated September 5, 2025, specifies up to 15 sparse TOPS and up to 4 dense TOPS. Sparse operation takes advantage of zero-valued or pruned model computations; it is not equivalent to achieving 15 TOPS on a dense workload. A TOPS rating alone also does not predict application speed: model, numerical precision, sparsity, software, and system configuration affect results.
| Published figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| Up to 15 TOPS sparse | Renesas’s peak sparse-operation rating for the DRP-AI3 accelerator; not a dense-throughput figure. |
| Up to 4 TOPS dense | The datasheet’s separate peak dense-operation rating. |
When comparing processors, compare sparse with sparse and dense with dense, and check the precision and workload behind any benchmark.

How the processor is built
The RZ/V2N pairs its DRP-AI3 accelerator with general-purpose processing and camera interfaces. Renesas product materials list four Arm Cortex-A55 cores running at up to 1.8 GHz and one Cortex-M33 core running at up to 200 MHz. The A55 cores handle application-level processing; the M33 provides a separate control-processing resource. The platform also supports LPDDR4/LPDDR4X memory, Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.2, and PCIe.
The company’s 2025.02 overview advertises 10 TOPS/W in the sparse/pruned accelerator context. That is a Renesas-published claim, not an independently validated measurement of a complete board or camera system. System power and effective efficiency depend on the full design and workload.
Camera inputs, ISP options, and video capabilities
The datasheet lists two MIPI CSI-2 camera channels, making multi-camera designs a natural target. However, a camera interface does not mean every variant includes the same image-processing hardware. The Mali-C55 ISP is optional and is specifically identified for the RZ/V2NP variant. Check the exact ordering code and feature matrix before designing around an ISP, graphics, or security feature.
When present, the ISP is specified for up to 4K and up to 630 Mpixels/s. The datasheet also lists H.264 encoding and decoding up to 1080p60, and H.265 up to 4K30. These are component specifications, not a guarantee that a finished system can sustain all listed rates at once; achievable throughput depends on integration and software.

Renesas names monitoring cameras, driver monitoring systems, and mobile robots as application examples. The common requirement is embedded vision processing, potentially combining camera input, AI inference, and control in one design. The processor’s ratings and interfaces make it a component to evaluate for those systems, rather than evidence that it will meet a particular deployment’s latency, accuracy, or power target.
Engineers evaluating the part should assess their model and precision, whether it can benefit from sparsity, camera count and image pipeline needs, memory and I/O requirements, software support, and measured board-level power under a representative workload. Renesas’s March 11, 2025 announcement framed the device as an extension of its mid-class AI processor lineup.
What it takes to use the chip
The RZ/V2N is an 840-pin BGA semiconductor for embedded-system integration. It is not a plug-and-play camera or a complete development system. A product built around it needs a compatible board design, memory, power circuitry, software stack, and camera integration. Renesas has a Boards & Kits section on its product page, but the sources cited here do not establish a specific RZ/V2N board SKU or retail availability.
For procurement or design review, consult the current product page and the group datasheet for the exact ordering variant and feature details.
