To identify birds with a Raspberry Pi, build an acoustic listening station: a microphone feeds sound to BirdNET-Pi, which classifies likely bird calls on the Pi and saves detection records for review. The system can run unattended and its dashboard is reachable on your local network; sharing detections with BirdWeather is optional. It does not use a camera, identify birds by sight, or establish a safe method for accessing the dashboard from outside your home.

What BirdNET-Pi does—and what “remote” means

BirdNET-Pi is intended to turn a Raspberry Pi and microphone into an autonomous listening station. The current BirdNET-Pi onboarding guide describes continuous listening, detection clips, a local database containing audio snippets and classification details, activity histograms by day, week and month, and notification options. These are capabilities described by the project, not a guarantee that every sound will be identified correctly.

Here, “remote” can mean several different things: leaving the station unattended, checking its dashboard from another device on the same local network, optionally sharing detections with BirdWeather, or reaching the dashboard from outside that network. The guide documents local-network access at birdnetpi.local and optional BirdWeather sharing; it does not document a particular secure configuration for outside access. Do not treat those features as permission to expose the dashboard directly to the public internet.

Choose a Raspberry Pi and software branch

The current onboarding guide recommends a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B or Raspberry Pi 5 for optimal performance. It also says a Pi 3B+ or Zero 2W may be used with lightweight operating-system setups. For a new build, its current OS guidance is 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS Lite on a high-end SD card, with Bookworm or Trixie releases. These are project recommendations, not a controlled comparison of speed or identification quality.

BirdNET-Pi has a TensorFlow Lite lineage: a 2022 Raspberry Pi overview and the legacy project description associate it with the TFLite version of BirdNET. The current onboarding guide describes use of the BirdNET model but does not specify the runtime implementation in its rendered instructions. Confirm the selected branch’s current requirements before assuming which runtime it uses.

The current guide describes two community branches. Choose by the features and maintenance approach you need, then follow that branch’s own install and update instructions. Do not combine commands from different forks.

Branch Focus described by the project guide What to check before installing
Nachtzuster Backend reliability and efficiency, backup and restore, and newer 64-bit Bookworm/Trixie releases. Confirm the supported board and OS combination, current install path, and backup/update procedure in that branch’s instructions.
zach7036 Enhanced Version Interface and analytics features. Confirm the current requirements and installation/update path for the features you want.

The branch descriptions are project-page characterizations, not independent performance benchmarks. An older Raspberry Pi overview published 24 May 2022 listed Pi 4 Model B or Pi 3 Model B+, 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye, and a USB microphone or sound card. For current setup choices, use the onboarding guide rather than treating that older configuration as current guidance.

Choose a microphone and a site

For a straightforward station, the current guide recommends a plug-and-play USB microphone; it gives Boya and Saramonic as examples. It also describes custom SASS arrangements for builders willing to handle a more involved setup. The guide advises avoiding external sound cards to prevent ground-loop buzzing. It does not provide a controlled comparison of microphone audio quality or detection range.

Approach Best fit Trade-offs
USB microphone A basic station whose goal is detecting and logging likely species. Simpler to set up; placement, wind and rain protection, and cable or network access still matter. It does not provide directional information as a standard feature.
Custom SASS or microphone array A specialist build with more involved hardware needs; an array may be used when directional information is important. Requires custom mounting and additional configuration. The cited array example does not establish that a standard USB-microphone BirdNET-Pi installation can determine direction.

For an outdoor station, the guide suggests a weatherproof electrical junction box or birdhouse-style mount and acoustic fabric to shield the microphone from wind and rain. Place the microphone where it can capture the soundscape you care about, while planning for weather exposure and a practical route for power and network connectivity. The sources do not establish a universal detection radius, Wi-Fi range, battery runtime, or solar-panel size.

Set up the station

  1. Select one software branch. Read that branch’s current installation instructions and verify its supported Pi model and OS release. The current project guide points to 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS Lite and a high-end SD card; support depends on the chosen branch.
  2. Prepare the hardware. Install the OS on the SD card, connect the Pi to power and the network, and attach a supported USB microphone or the components for your custom SASS build.
  3. Install BirdNET-Pi using that branch’s instructions. Do not reuse commands from another fork or rely on older Bullseye-era setup steps without checking compatibility.
  4. Protect and position the microphone. Use a weatherproof enclosure and acoustic wind/rain shielding suitable for the site. Avoid placing fabric or housing where it blocks the sound you intend to record.
  5. Open the dashboard locally. From a device on the same network, try birdnetpi.local as described by the onboarding guide. The guide does not establish an outside-network access recipe.
  6. Review detections and settings. Check whether clips, classification details, charts, notifications, and optional BirdWeather sharing behave as you intend under the selected branch’s settings.

What the records can tell you

The guide describes locally stored detection clips and classification details, plus daily, weekly and monthly activity histograms. These records can help you inspect when the station detected likely bird sounds and revisit the associated snippets. A classification is not visual confirmation: the station does not see the bird, and a sound-based result should not be presented as a sighting.

BirdNET-Pi can optionally share detections with BirdWeather. Sharing is distinct from local classification: the Pi can analyze and retain detections locally without making every record public by default. Check the selected software branch’s current sharing settings and BirdWeather configuration before enabling data sharing.

When an array build makes sense

A specialized example is A-BiRD, a family-developed system described by the Raspberry Pi Foundation on 23 April 2024. Its microphone array could infer angular direction, helping the project distinguish birds singing at the same time. The article describes a bespoke arrangement that sent ambient audio from a Raspberry Pi to Cornell Lab’s BirdNET Sound ID for analysis; it does not show that direction finding is built into a standard BirdNET-Pi USB-microphone station.

The article reports that two A-BiRD devices collected 330GB of audio across more than 160,000 birdsong events during a local project. It also reports 98 bird species and 21,131 combined birdsong events identified. Those are project-specific figures, not general accuracy, false-positive, or performance benchmarks for BirdNET-Pi. The described A-BiRD parts included a Raspberry Pi, Waveshare WM8960 Audio HAT, microphone mounting fixture, weatherproof housing, power supply, HDMI monitor, keyboard and mouse; that list is not a minimum parts list for a basic BirdNET-Pi station.

Limits to plan around

  • No universal accuracy or range figure: the cited sources do not establish a general accuracy percentage, false-positive rate, or detection distance.
  • No sight identification: results are based on audio classification, not a camera view or visual field identification.
  • No established safe external-access method: the onboarding guide documents local-network dashboard access, not a recommended way to expose it from outside the home.
  • Site infrastructure varies: the cited material does not specify battery or solar sizing, cellular data requirements, total cost, or network range.
