Google Messages lets you edit a sent RCS, SMS, or MMS message for up to 15 minutes after sending it. It is a chance to correct or clarify a message—not an invisible recall: the recipient may already have seen the original, and Google says edits are labeled or sent as a follow-up depending on the recipient’s support.
What Google Messages’ edit feature does—and doesn’t do
For 15 minutes after you send a message, Google Messages may let you change its text. Google’s current help instructions say the feature covers RCS, SMS, and MMS. The 15-minute window runs from sending and does not depend on whether the other person has read or answered the message. Google introduced the feature in its May 30, 2024 Android announcement; its product director described editing as a way to fix typos, add missing words, or clarify what you mean.
This is not a promise that the first version disappears unseen. Google says an “Edited” label appears above the message for both sender and recipient. If the message is SMS, or the recipient’s setup does not support editing, the recipient may instead receive a new message beginning with an asterisk (*). So the result can look different on the recipient’s device.
How to edit a sent message
- Open the conversation in the Google Messages app.
- Touch and hold the message you sent.
- Tap Edit. This option is available only within 15 minutes of sending.
- Make the correction, then confirm the edit in the app.
Editing is done in the Google Messages app; the web interface does not provide this feature. If Edit is no longer available, the 15-minute window has expired.

What recipients see by message type and support
| Message or chat | What Google says about editing and recipient display |
|---|---|
| RCS | Google Messages supports editing sent RCS messages. Google says an “Edited” label appears above the edited message for sender and recipient. |
| SMS | The recipient receives another message beginning with an asterisk (*), rather than a seamless replacement. |
| MMS | Google lists sent MMS messages as editable. The help page does not state a separate recipient-display rule for MMS. |
| Recipient without editing support | Google says a new asterisk-marked message is delivered. The sender’s ability to edit therefore does not guarantee that every recipient sees the change as an updated original. |
| One-to-one chat with an iPhone user | Editing is supported when the iPhone user has RCS chats enabled. |
| Group RCS chat | Google says editing works even if not every participant can edit; recipients without support receive a new asterisk-marked message. |
Editing is different from deleting
Changing a message’s text is not the same action as removing a message. Google Messages also lists separate quick actions for “Delete for everyone” and “Delete for me,” but those deletion options are not the edit feature. Google’s cited help page does not establish a deletion window or behavior for every message type and recipient, so do not assume editing’s 15-minute limit or recipient behavior applies to deletion.

No purchase is required if you already have a suitable Android smartphone running Google Messages. This feature alone is not a reason to buy a new handset.
