Reddit’s AI controversy is a dispute over who may use large-scale human conversations, under what permission, and with which safeguards. Reddit has described its posts and comments as valuable AI data, signed commercial arrangements, restricted some automated access, faced an FTC staff inquiry, and sued Anthropic over alleged scraping. Those events do not prove that every Reddit post was used to train a model, that users consented to a particular deal, or that any regulator or court found wrongdoing.
For users, the practical answer is limited: Reddit’s current Developer Terms say AI-model training through Reddit services or data requires permission, but the available public record does not establish what share of posts entered any specific model, whether individual contributors were paid, or whether deleting a post removes information from a model that already processed it.
Why did Reddit posts become important to AI companies?
Reddit hosts unusually large amounts of first-person, conversational writing. Threads contain questions, disagreements, explanations, personal experiences and follow-up context that can be useful for search systems and language-model development. In its fiscal 2024 Form 10-K, Reddit said its platform contained more than two billion posts and more than 20 billion comments through December 31, 2024, and wrote that its content is “particularly important for artificial intelligence (‘AI’).” The filing also said some leading large language models had been trained on Reddit data.
Those totals describe the size of Reddit’s platform, not the amount used to train a particular model. The filing presented licensing as a developing commercial opportunity while warning that Reddit could become dependent on a small number of partners, face less favorable renewal terms, encounter unresolved privacy and intellectual-property questions, or suffer community harm if partners misused content.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The central tension is that a post can be publicly readable without being automatically available for every commercial purpose. Readers may access a page in a browser, while large-scale collection can still be governed by Reddit’s terms, technical controls, contracts and applicable law.
What was the Reddit and Google AI deal?
On February 22, 2024, Google announced an expanded partnership with Reddit. Google said the arrangement would provide access to Reddit’s Data API for fresher, structured content and that Reddit intended to use Vertex AI to improve Reddit search and other platform capabilities.
Google described the partnership as serving several functions rather than as a simple statement that all Reddit content would be placed into a training data set. Google also said the arrangement did not change its use of publicly crawlable content for indexing, training or display in Google products. That is Google’s description of its own practices and this partnership; it is not a universal rule for every AI company or every Reddit post.
Google’s announcement said Reddit would have “efficient and structured access to fresher information.” The statement does not identify the percentage of Reddit content used for any model, provide a user-by-user consent count, or promise that a contributor can remove material from a model after processing.
Did Reddit sell my posts to train AI?
Reddit has disclosed commercial licensing and data-sharing arrangements involving user-generated content, but the public documents do not show that every post was sold or that every licensed use was model training. Reddit’s annual filing describes AI data as a business opportunity and identifies risks around partner behavior, while the company’s current rules require permission for AI-model training through Reddit services or data.
In June 2025, Reddit’s lawsuit against Anthropic alleged that Anthropic’s bots continued accessing Reddit after requests to stop and used comments without authorization or a license containing privacy and deletion safeguards. Reddit’s complaint identifies Google, OpenAI, Sprinklr and Cision as companies with formal licensing agreements. These are allegations and representations in a complaint, not findings by a court.
Neither the filing nor the complaint establishes how many posts from an individual account were included in a particular training run. The reviewed public sources also do not establish compensation paid to individual users, a comprehensive consent mechanism for contributors, or a guaranteed deletion process for trained models.

Can AI companies use public Reddit posts?
Public visibility is not the same thing as blanket permission for commercial collection. Reddit’s current Developer Terms state that using Reddit data to train AI models requires permission and that no other rights in user content are granted without express permission from the applicable rightsholder.

That language describes Reddit’s contractual and platform rules. It does not, by itself, resolve every legal question about material that was publicly reachable, copied before a rule change, obtained from another source, or incorporated into an existing model. Copyright, contract, privacy and other doctrines can vary by jurisdiction and by the facts of a particular collection.
Reddit announced in June 2024 that it would update its robots.txt file and continue rate-limiting or blocking unknown bots. It said access would remain available for good-faith noncommercial researchers and the Internet Archive. Technical blocking can reduce new automated collection, but it cannot demonstrate what data may have been copied earlier or guarantee what a third party retained.
What did Reddit change in 2024?
The policy changes combined commercial licensing with tighter control over unsanctioned automated access.

The Developer Terms put AI training behind an express-permission requirement. They also distinguish training from other possible uses: absent express permission from the applicable rightsholder, the terms do not grant additional user-content rights.
Robots.txt and bot controls
Reddit said it would update robots.txt and maintain rate limits or blocks for unknown bots. This is an access-management measure, not proof that all historical copies were erased.
Exceptions for research and archiving
Reddit said good-faith noncommercial researchers and the Internet Archive would continue to have access. The announcement frames those exceptions as controlled access, not as a license for unrestricted commercial model development.
Why did the FTC inquire about Reddit’s AI data deals?
Reddit disclosed that it received an FTC staff letter in March 2024 concerning a non-public inquiry into the sale, licensing or sharing of user-generated content to train AI models. The Associated Press reported the disclosure at the time.
An inquiry is scrutiny, not a finding that Reddit violated the law. The available disclosure does not establish that the FTC concluded a violation, ordered a remedy or determined that users lacked legally sufficient notice. It shows that a regulator wanted information about a new and unsettled business practice.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The distinction matters because regulatory questions can cover privacy representations, consent, data-sale disclosures, contractual practices or other issues without resolving them in favor of either side. Reddit’s filing identifies the inquiry; it does not supply a final agency determination.
Did Reddit sue Anthropic over scraping?
Yes. Reddit filed a lawsuit in 2025 alleging that Anthropic scraped Reddit comments without authorization, continued automated access after Reddit asked it to stop, and used the material without a license containing privacy and deletion protections.
The complaint also names Google, OpenAI, Sprinklr and Cision as licensees. Naming a company in a pleading does not describe the full scope of its use, prove that every named company handled data improperly, or establish liability. The sources available for this explainer do not establish the later procedural status or outcome of the case.

What do Reddit’s moderation numbers say about AI content?
Reddit’s January–June 2025 transparency report says close to six billion pieces of content were shared during that period and about 2.66% of total content was removed. The report attributes removal activity to moderators and administrators and describes automated tooling alongside human review.
Those figures are platform-wide moderation statistics. They do not measure how much content was AI-generated, how accurately AI-generated material was identified, or whether safeguards around licensed AI data worked.
| Measure | What the source reports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit corpus through December 31, 2024 | More than 2 billion posts and more than 20 billion comments, according to Reddit’s fiscal 2024 Form 10-K | The number of items used to train any specific model |
| Content shared, January–June 2025 | Close to 6 billion pieces, according to Reddit’s transparency report | The amount collected by AI companies or the amount that was AI-generated |
| Content removed, January–June 2025 | About 2.66% of total content across content types | AI-label accuracy, consent rates or model-training safeguards |
What is established, and what remains unknown?
The evidence has different levels of authority. Keeping them separate prevents a company statement or lawsuit allegation from being mistaken for an adjudicated fact.

Can I stop my Reddit posts from being used in AI training?
You should not assume that a single setting can reverse collection that already occurred. Reddit’s terms and access controls state what the platform permits going forward, but the available sources do not establish the effect of those rules on previously copied data or models that have already been trained.

Reduce sensitive exposure
Avoid putting passwords, financial details, precise location data, medical identifiers or information about another person into a public thread. Public posts can be copied, quoted or archived even when a platform later changes its access policy.
Review the current rules
Check Reddit’s current Developer Terms and public-content announcements before relying on an older explanation. Terms are changeable, and a rule governing API access may differ from the treatment of material obtained through another route.
Use account and post controls where available
Delete or edit material through Reddit’s available account tools when you decide it should no longer be public, but treat that as a control over the Reddit account rather than proof that every historical copy or model representation has disappeared.

Ask for the specific data practice
If you need an answer about a particular account, community or licensed service, ask Reddit or the relevant service what data source, purpose and retention policy applies. A general statement that content is public will not answer whether a specific model processed it.
What does this mean for ordinary Reddit users?
Reddit is acting in two roles at once: it is enforcing limits on access to its communities and pursuing licensing revenue from the same corpus. That explains why partnership announcements appeared alongside robots.txt changes, bot restrictions and stronger permission language.
Users should read claims narrowly. A licensed partnership may include search, display, analytics or platform features in addition to model training. A regulator’s inquiry signals concern but not guilt. A complaint can document one side’s evidence and theory without proving the underlying conduct. And a moderation percentage cannot answer whether AI safeguards protect an individual post.
The most defensible conclusion is that Reddit is trying to move large-scale AI access from uncontrolled scraping toward permissioned, commercial arrangements. Whether those arrangements provide meaningful consent, privacy protection, deletion rights or compensation for contributors remains incompletely documented in the public sources covered here.
Frequently asked questions
Does Reddit pay users when their comments are licensed?
The public materials covered here do not report payments distributed to individual commenters. A commercial agreement between companies does not, by itself, show that revenue is allocated to the people who wrote the posts.

Will deleting a Reddit comment remove it from an AI chatbot?
There is no established guarantee that deletion from Reddit removes information already copied, indexed or incorporated into a trained model. Whether removal is possible depends on the collector’s records, retention rules and technical process.
Are Reddit moderators responsible for AI-generated posts?
Reddit’s transparency figures describe moderator and administrator removal activity across all content types, with automated tools and human review. They do not assign a separate AI-content workload or show how accurately synthetic text was detected.
Does blocking a bot prove that no data was collected?
No. Rate limits, robots.txt rules and blocks can affect future access, but they cannot establish what a bot copied before the restriction or what another party retained elsewhere.
Has a court ruled that Anthropic unlawfully trained on Reddit data?
The available material identifies Reddit’s allegations in its 2025 complaint, not a final judicial finding. The procedural outcome is not established by the sources used for this explainer.
