Choose real-time strategy (RTS) if you want the battlefield and economy to keep changing while you act. Choose turn-based strategy if you want a defined planning window before committing each move. Neither format is automatically deeper, easier, faster to finish, or better for beginners. The useful difference is the decision rhythm: RTS asks you to coordinate overlapping tasks under a continuing clock, while turn-based strategy lets you inspect a position and then act within turn order.
This guide explains how that clock changes play, compares the two formats across the decisions that matter, and gives you a practical way to choose a first game without assuming every title in a genre plays the same way.
What the two strategy formats actually mean
Real-time strategy: a continuous game state
In an RTS, the game world continues to advance whether or not you are currently issuing an order. Units move, construction and research take time, resources accumulate or run out, and opponents can act during the same period. David Churchill’s scholarly chapter on RTS game AI describes these as simultaneous-move games: “RTS games are simultaneous move games, where more than one player can issue actions at the same time.” The same chapter contrasts them with turn-based games by noting that the game keeps advancing even if a player does not execute any actions.

“Real-time” does not mean every action is instantaneous. A worker may need time to gather a resource, a building may have a construction duration, and a military unit may take time to reach a destination. You are deciding which actions to start, queue, cancel, or prioritize while those timers and movements continue.

Turn-based strategy: decisions grouped into turns
Turn-based strategy divides play into turns or other discrete decision windows. Depending on the game, players may act one at a time, several factions may complete a simultaneous turn, or a phase may end only after everyone confirms. The defining feature is not that the game is simple; it is that the rules determine when decisions are made and when the state advances to the next turn.
Civilization VI is a clear example. Its official Steam description presents city expansion, technology and culture research, leader agendas, and several victory routes inside a turn-based structure. You still face long-term trade-offs, hidden information, diplomacy, production queues, and complex economies. The turn boundary changes the timing of commitment; it does not set a ceiling on strategic depth.
How the clock changes your decisions
| Decision axis | Real-time strategy | Turn-based strategy |
|---|---|---|
| How play advances | The world continues to advance; actions can overlap and take time. | Decisions are made within turns or defined phases. |
| Attention pattern | Scan, prioritize, issue orders, and rescan as events develop. | Inspect the position, calculate options, commit, then evaluate the result. |
| Typical pressure | Several tasks can become urgent at once, including economy, production, technology, and defense. | The pressure is usually analytical: choosing a sequence, target, diplomatic stance, or long-term plan before ending the turn. |
| Error recovery | An order may be changed, but time spent or a missed event can create consequences. | You often have more opportunity to review the board before confirming; the exact undo and save rules are game-specific. |
| Best fit for | Players who enjoy adaptation, multitasking, and visible momentum. | Players who enjoy deliberate planning and comparing lines before committing. |
This table describes the formats, not universal rules. A particular RTS may offer pause or slow-speed options, and a turn-based game may impose timers, simultaneous turns, or severe per-turn limits. Check the individual game’s settings and multiplayer rules rather than assuming the genre label answers those questions.

What playing an RTS feels like
You coordinate an economy and an army at the same time
The official Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition guide explicitly calls the game an RTS and describes building and expanding an empire as the world advances around you. Its core loop combines economic growth, technology research, military-unit training, and command of armies. A strong opening is therefore not just a build order or just a combat plan: it is a sequence that keeps workers productive, production buildings active, technologies timed, and defenses ready for what an opponent might do next.
Because those systems overlap, an apparently small delay can matter. Spending resources on an upgrade may postpone a defensive unit. Moving an army to attack may leave your base exposed. Adding workers may improve your economy later but provide fewer immediate troops. The strategic question is often which task gets attention now and which task can safely wait for the next scan.

You respond to information that changes while you play
Scouting, map control, and timing are unusually visible in RTS play. A newly spotted structure can alter your production choice; an enemy army appearing near a resource site can turn an economic plan into a defensive emergency. You are not merely solving a static puzzle. You are maintaining a plan while updating it as information arrives.
Examples and access
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is listed in its official guide as available on PC through the Microsoft Store, Steam, and PC Game Pass. The guide is useful for understanding the genre’s simultaneous economy-and-army workload, but platform listings, editions, and availability can change by region and date.
Blizzard’s official StarCraft II site identifies the game as a real-time strategy title. That confirms its genre, but it does not by itself establish a universal difficulty level, learning curve, session length, or hardware requirement. Those depend on the mode and the player.
What playing a turn-based strategy game feels like
You can separate observation from commitment
A turn gives you a defined point at which to examine the map, production queues, diplomatic relationships, and available actions. You can compare several possible moves before ending the turn, then watch the consequences when other factions act. This rhythm favors players who enjoy asking “What changes if I choose option A instead of option B?” before making the choice.
Long-term systems can be just as demanding
Civilization VI illustrates why turn-based should not be treated as a synonym for casual or shallow. Its official Steam description includes expanding cities, researching technology and culture, responding to leader agendas, and pursuing five victory types. Those systems create strategic tension across many turns: a choice that looks efficient now may close off a diplomatic, scientific, cultural, or military route later.

Turn order also creates its own form of urgency. If a rival reaches a resource first, another leader changes an agenda, or a diplomatic vote is scheduled, waiting a turn can have a real cost. The absence of continuous unit movement does not remove pressure; it relocates pressure into sequencing, forecasting, and opportunity cost.
Series example
The official Civilization series site describes the series as turn-based strategy focused on guiding a civilization through history and building an empire. That broad description covers multiple releases with different interfaces, scenarios, and rules, so use the exact edition’s tutorial and feature list when deciding whether it suits you.
Which is right for you?
Use the preference statements below as a decision guide. They are practical inferences from the mechanics above, not results from a player survey.
Choose RTS when these statements sound appealing
- You like acting while several processes unfold and do not mind switching attention frequently.
- You enjoy adapting a plan after scouting reveals new information.
- You find satisfaction in coordinating economy, technology, production, and combat on a shared timeline.
- You prefer visible momentum, where a well-timed action can immediately change the situation.
- You are willing to practice keyboard shortcuts, camera movement, or control groups if a game uses them.
Choose turn-based strategy when these statements sound appealing
- You want time to inspect the position and compare alternatives before confirming a move.
- You enjoy planning several turns ahead and evaluating long-term trade-offs.
- You prefer strategic complexity without having to divide attention between simultaneous timers.
- You like experimenting with diplomacy, research, city development, or victory routes at your own analytical pace.
- You would rather make one considered commitment than recover from a missed event that happened while you were looking elsewhere.
If you identify with both
Many players do. Try one game from each format and compare the type of effort you notice, not whether you win immediately. After an RTS session, ask whether the challenge felt like enjoyable coordination or exhausting interruption. After a turn-based session, ask whether planning felt satisfying or overly slow. Your answer is more useful than a claim that one genre is objectively more strategic.
Do not judge a game by its genre label alone
Tutorials and practice modes
Onboarding can make two games in the same genre feel entirely different. The official Age of Empires IV quickstart guide describes an introductory tutorial, “Art of War” practice challenges, campaigns, player multiplayer, and four AI difficulty levels. That guide is dated October 28, 2021, so verify current modes and availability before buying or installing.

The comparable learning features for another title should be checked directly in its current documentation or menus. The material available for this comparison does not establish a matching set of tutorial features for Civilization VI, so do not assume that a familiar series label guarantees the same onboarding.
Campaigns, skirmishes, and multiplayer
A campaign can teach mechanics through scripted objectives, while a skirmish can expose you to open-ended economy and map decisions. Multiplayer may add timers, matchmaking rules, and social pressure that are absent from single-player. When comparing games, identify the mode you will actually play; a campaign-focused experience and a competitive ladder can make the same engine feel like different products.
Difficulty and interface options
Look for adjustable AI, scenario selection, tooltips, remappable controls, speed settings, accessibility options, and save rules. These features affect practical accessibility more than the RTS or turn-based label. A demanding turn-based game can overwhelm a new player with opaque systems, while a well-tutorialized RTS can be approachable if it introduces production and combat in stages.

“RTS is always faster”
RTS requires actions during a continuously advancing match, but that does not prove that a complete game always takes less real-world time than a turn-based game. A long campaign, a cautious player, or a multiplayer match can change the total duration. The reliable distinction is the advancing decision clock, not a guaranteed session length.
“Turn-based means you can pause anything”
Turn boundaries create planning windows, but pause, undo, autosave, and simultaneous-turn behavior vary by title and mode. Read the game’s controls and multiplayer rules rather than assuming a universal pause function.

“One format is inherently more strategic”
Both formats can require forecasting, resource management, spatial reasoning, adaptation, and risk assessment. RTS concentrates those demands into concurrent timing and coordination; turn-based games concentrate them into sequencing and evaluation. A genre label cannot establish depth, skill ceiling, or accessibility by itself.
A practical way to select your first game
- Decide your preferred rhythm. Choose continuous adaptation if you want the world moving while you act; choose discrete planning if you want to commit after examining the position.
- Pick the mode you will use first. For RTS, that might be a tutorial, campaign, or low-level AI match. For turn-based strategy, it might be a guided scenario or a standard map with a lower difficulty.
- Check the exact learning supports. Confirm tutorials, practice challenges, tooltips, AI levels, and whether the game explains its economy and victory conditions.
- Confirm platform and edition details. Store pages and regional offerings change. For example, the official Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition guide lists Microsoft Store, Steam, and PC Game Pass on PC, while a current listing may differ by region or edition.
- Play long enough to reach the core loop. In an RTS, complete enough of a match to manage economy and military simultaneously. In a turn-based game, continue far enough to make research, expansion, diplomacy, or victory-route decisions.
- Evaluate the kind of mistake you prefer. If you would rather recover from an imperfect plan than miss an event while multitasking, turn-based may fit better. If careful planning feels sterile without live reaction, RTS may fit better.
Skills that transfer between the genres
Learning one format helps with the other, but the transfer is not automatic. Both reward setting priorities, understanding economies, scouting or gathering information, identifying win conditions, and recognizing opportunity cost. An RTS player already understands that production and resources support a larger plan; a turn-based player already understands that an apparently strong move can weaken a later position.
The adjustment is in execution. RTS practice should emphasize camera control, order timing, production uptime, and responding to simultaneous threats. Turn-based practice should emphasize evaluating alternatives, sequencing actions, reading diplomatic incentives, and planning several turns ahead. Treat these as separate skills rather than assuming victory in one genre predicts immediate success in the other.
The short answer
Start with RTS if the appeal is a living battlefield where economy, technology, production, and military response compete for your attention at the same time. Start with turn-based strategy if the appeal is examining a changing position, weighing alternatives, and committing after deliberate planning. Then judge the individual game by its tutorial, modes, difficulty options, interface, and current platform availability. The format tells you when decisions happen; the game determines what those decisions actually are.
