Yes—you can play The Division 2’s Washington, D.C. campaign entirely alone. Start with the story missions, learn to fight from cover, keep the difficulty manageable, and use one skill that deals damage with another that repairs armor. You do not need the Dark Zone, a raid group, a level boost, or the Warlords of New York expansion to begin or to reach the base game’s level-40 endgame. Ubisoft describes the game as supporting single-player play with customizable weapons, gear, and skills (official game overview).
This guide takes a first-time solo agent from the opening mission through level 40. It explains which activities to prioritize, how to choose temporary leveling gear, when older World Tier advice no longer applies, and how to decide whether an expansion or optional endgame activity is worth your time.
Can you play The Division 2 solo?
Yes. The entire Washington, D.C. campaign is designed to be playable alone, and Ubisoft lists single-player, cooperative, and player-versus-player components as separate ways to play. You can begin the story without entering the Dark Zone or joining another player.

What should you do in your first session?
Begin the D.C. story and treat the opening missions as a tutorial for movement, cover, aiming, and skill timing. The following sequence keeps the first hours focused without claiming that Ubisoft requires one exact mission order.
- Enter the campaign and select an available story mission. Follow the objective marker, listen to the briefing, and learn how safe houses and settlements connect the map. Story missions provide reliable progression while introducing enemy types and encounter layouts.
- Stay in cover before trying to outshoot enemies. Move between solid cover, peek only long enough to fire, and relocate when grenades or flanking enemies make your position unsafe. Standing in the open is usually a positioning problem, not a weapon problem.
- Unlock one attacking skill as soon as the game allows it. The Assault Turret is a stationary automated weapon that attacks nearby targets. The Striker Drone is mobile and can be directed to a chosen target. Ubisoft’s skill descriptions establish their roles; they do not establish a universal damage ranking (Ubisoft’s skill overview).
- Use your second slot to cover your biggest weakness. If armor is the problem, try the Reinforcer Chem Launcher or Restorer Hive, both described by Ubisoft as armor-repair options. If you are surviving comfortably, a second attacking skill is reasonable. This is a forgiving recommendation for learning, not an officially ranked build.
- Inspect the map between missions. Control points, bounties, public executions, and other visible activities are useful practice and can provide weapons or armor. Use them when you want a break from the story or need a little experience; they are not a mandatory checklist.
- Leave difficulty at a setting you can read clearly. Do not raise it simply because a guide says you should. Story completion does not require Heroic difficulty, optional Directives, or a high-end build.
What is a good beginner solo build?
A practical starter setup pairs an automated damage skill with an armor-repair skill. The damage skill pressures enemies while you remain behind cover, and the repair skill gives you a way to recover when a firefight goes badly. You can change skills at any time, so treat this as a learning framework rather than a permanent loadout.
| Slot or choice | Beginner option | Why it helps solo players | When to choose the alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage skill | Assault Turret | Place it near a fight and let it attack nearby targets while you concentrate on cover and priority enemies. | Choose the Striker Drone when you want a mobile attacker or direct control over its target. |
| Damage skill | Striker Drone | Send it to a selected target and use its movement to pressure enemies who are hard to reach from your cover. | Choose the Assault Turret when encounters are more static and you prefer a set-and-defend position. |
| Repair skill | Reinforcer Chem Launcher | Provides an on-demand armor repair tool when you need to recover during or after an exchange. | Use the Restorer Hive if you prefer a placed repair area and can defend a position around it. |
| Second damage skill | A second attacker | Can shorten fights once your cover discipline and armor management are reliable. | Return to a repair skill if you are being downed before enemies are eliminated. |
Turret versus drone is a control preference, not a proven best-in-slot contest. A turret rewards planning where the fight will happen; a drone follows the action and can be redirected. Experiment during ordinary missions and keep the option that lets you maintain cover and focus on the most dangerous enemy.
Do not assume that an older description of the Reviver Hive guarantees a self-revive in every current context. For a new solo character, choose a skill whose present description clearly matches the problem you are trying to solve.
Which missions and activities should you do first?
Prioritize story missions and the settlement objectives that unlock them. They introduce the campaign’s factions, open additional vendors and activities, and give you a clear next destination. The map will display many other icons, but you do not need to clear every activity before continuing the narrative.
A simple activity decision rule
- Need the next level or better equipment? Play an available story mission or a nearby activity with a suitable recommended level.
- Want practice? Try a control point or public event while keeping an escape route to cover.
- Need a specific type of reward? Read the activity’s reward information, but do not farm a perfect item before level 40; leveling equipment will soon be replaced.
- Feeling overwhelmed? Return to a safe house, change skills, sell or deconstruct low-value items, and resume the story at the same difficulty.
Mission replay options include Story, Normal, Hard, Challenging, and Heroic, while global difficulty runs from Normal through Heroic. Ubisoft also documents optional Directives that add extra constraints (Ubisoft Help: difficulty settings). These are tools for adjusting challenge, not requirements for a first campaign run.

How should you choose weapons and armor while leveling?
Use the items you obtain rather than planning a level-40 gear set in advance. During the campaign, a newer weapon with a higher level and useful attributes will usually be more practical than an older item kept for a talent or color combination. Replace leveling pieces whenever a clear upgrade appears.
Compare an item in this order
- Does its level fit the activity? A large level gap can outweigh a small difference in talent or attribute quality.
- Does it support your immediate plan? Weapon damage helps a weapon-focused approach; armor and armor-related attributes improve forgiveness; skill-related attributes are useful when your skills are doing much of the work.
- Can you use its talent reliably? A talent that requires conditions you rarely meet is less useful than a simpler effect you can trigger consistently.
- Is it worth storing? Keep only pieces with a plausible future use or an especially good attribute or talent. Otherwise sell or deconstruct them to reduce inventory clutter.
Ubisoft’s system overview describes core attributes, talents, Skill Tiers, and a recalibration library that stores attributes and talents for later use (system overview). The practical implication for a new agent is simple: learn what an item does, keep a few useful alternatives, and postpone detailed optimization until your level and available systems stabilize.
Do you need Skill Tiers for a weapon-focused solo character?
No. Skill Tiers improve skills, but a weapon-focused agent does not need to reach the maximum tier. Ubisoft’s system overview describes six Skill Tiers, with one tier added by each Skill Tier core attribute. Build toward the role you are actually playing instead of forcing every item to carry skill cores.
If your turret, drone, or repair skill is central to your survival, Skill Tier cores can make that plan stronger. If most enemies are defeated with firearms and your skills are support tools, weapon-damage or armor-oriented cores may be more appropriate. The game allows mixed approaches; there is no requirement that every solo beginner use a full skill build.
What changed about level 30, level 40, World Tiers, and Gear Score?
Older guides often direct players through World Tiers and Gear Score. That advice is obsolete for the current progression model. In Ubisoft’s June 2024 First Rogue notes, the team states, “World Tiers have been removed from the game,” and places specializations at level 30. The same notes say, “The Targeted Loot system is now available at level 40.” Read the dated change notes for the current milestones (Ubisoft’s June 2024 update).
| Milestone | What to focus on |
|---|---|
| Levels 1–29 | Story missions, cover, weapon handling, skill roles, and replacing outdated gear. |
| Level 30 | Specializations become available. Choose one that complements how you fight, but do not treat the choice as a permanent requirement for campaign completion. |
| Level 40 | Keener’s Watch, global difficulty, Targeted Loot, and shared level-40 endgame access become relevant according to Ubisoft’s 2024 notes. |
The base game can reach level 40 in D.C. and access shared endgame content without purchasing Warlords of New York. That expansion adds its own New York campaign, map, and certain skills; it is not a prerequisite for starting the D.C. story or reaching level 40.

Is Warlords of New York required for a solo player?
No. Buy it for the New York story, map, and expansion-specific content—not because a first-time solo player must own it to finish D.C. or enter the base game’s level-40 progression. Ubisoft’s One Endgame announcement and follow-up FAQ explain which level-40 systems are shared and which content remains expansion-specific (One Endgame announcement).
An older Ubisoft Help page still describes seasons as requiring Warlords. That conflicts with the newer, dated 2024 change announcement that opened level 40 and seasons to all owners. Use the newer announcement when deciding whether the expansion is necessary, and check current official account or store information if Ubisoft changes the entitlement rules again.
Should you use a level boost?
A boost is a convenience option, not the best default for someone asking how to learn the game. Ubisoft says boosting skips the early story and the achievements associated with it (Ubisoft Help: character boosts).
- Use the normal campaign if this is your first character, you want to understand cover and skills, or you care about the opening missions and achievements.
- Consider a boost if you already understand the systems, want an alternate character, and accept that you will skip the early teaching sequence.
- Do not boost to solve a build problem. A higher-level character still needs a coherent loadout and knowledge of enemy behavior; skipping the tutorial can make the first fights more confusing.
How do you improve a build after reaching level 40?
First make the character functional, then optimize. At level 40, Targeted Loot helps you pursue a desired gear category instead of relying entirely on random drops. If an item has one excellent attribute or talent but another weak element, the recalibration library can let you improve the useful piece rather than discard it. Save materials and library entries for items you expect to keep; spending heavily on temporary gear during leveling is inefficient.
A sensible level-40 order
- Choose a role. Decide whether firearms, skills, armor, or a hybrid approach is doing most of your work.
- Assemble a complete, usable loadout. Matching every statistic perfectly is less important than having reliable damage, survivability, and skill uptime.
- Use Targeted Loot selectively. Farm the category that fills your largest gap rather than collecting every named item.
- Recalibrate valuable pieces. Transfer a stored attribute or talent when it materially improves an item you intend to retain.
- Raise difficulty only when clears are comfortable. A faster, safer Normal or Hard run can be more productive for learning than repeated failures on Heroic.
Global difficulty and other endgame controls are available at the level-40 milestones described in Ubisoft’s 2024 notes. They are adjustable progression tools, not proof that your build is wrong if you leave them at a lower setting.
Can a solo player do Countdown, Escalation, or Prototype activities?
Some advanced activities are technically available alone, but “can enter solo” does not mean “is beginner-friendly.” Ubisoft says Countdown can be played solo at level 40 and describes Escalation as single-player-capable (Ubisoft Help). These modes are better treated as later experiments once you understand your build and the activity’s rules.

Prototype upgrades are an especially poor first target. Ubisoft lists level 40, maximum expertise, and optimized attributes among the prerequisites. Finish a dependable build, learn ordinary endgame encounters, and decide whether that long optimization path appeals to you before investing in it.

Difficulty spikes usually have a practical cause that you can correct without abandoning the campaign.
- You die before reaching cover: move earlier, use shorter exposures, and avoid crossing open ground while enemies are firing.
- Your skills are not helping: replace a low-impact choice with the Assault Turret or Striker Drone, then add the Reinforcer Chem Launcher or Restorer Hive if armor is the issue.
- Enemies take too long to defeat: replace under-level weapons, check that your weapon attributes support your chosen role, and focus fire on rushers or enemies using dangerous skills.
- You are surrounded: retreat through a doorway or around solid cover instead of trying to hold the original position. Repositioning is part of the encounter, not a failure.
- Inventory management is slowing you down: sell or deconstruct obvious low-value drops and keep only a few alternatives until the level-40 systems matter.
- You raised the difficulty too soon: lower it. Story missions remain worthwhile, and learning enemy behavior on a manageable setting is faster than repeatedly wiping.
What is optional in a first solo playthrough?
The Dark Zone, PvP, raids, Heroic missions, Directives, Countdown, Escalation, Prototype optimization, and a perfect gear-set farm can all wait. They are additional ways to play, not gates blocking the D.C. campaign. A first run is successful when you understand cover, maintain a workable loadout, and enjoy the story—not when every map icon is cleared.
Likewise, a paid Season Pass is not required for the beginner setup. Ubisoft’s seasonal announcements distinguish free-track gear from optional paid rewards. Keep the campaign and your core build independent of that purchase.
What should returning players know about upcoming content?
As of October 29, 2026, Ubisoft has announced Echoes of Central Park for November 3, 2026, with crossplay scheduled to roll out after launch. The announcement also describes six new skill variants as forthcoming content, not features available during the D.C. opening campaign (Ubisoft’s October 13, 2026 announcement). If you are reading after that date, verify the launch status and platform details before planning around them.
None of that changes the beginner route: start the campaign, learn the fundamentals, and build a reliable level-40 character before chasing new seasonal systems.

Can you buy a physical copy for a solo campaign?
If you own a disc-capable PS4, a retail listing may be described as a “The Division 2 PS4 disc”; Xbox disc availability depends on the console edition and region. Ubisoft’s product page confirms the game, supported console platforms, and single-player mode, but it is a digital listing and does not verify a particular retailer’s stock, disc SKU, included DLC, or regional compatibility (Ubisoft Store listing). Check the retailer’s exact platform, region, and included content before buying. Warlords of New York and Echoes of Central Park are digital story-content options, not campaign prerequisites.
Solo checklist from level 1 to endgame
- Start the Washington, D.C. campaign on a manageable difficulty.
- Practice moving between cover and retreating before armor is depleted.
- Pair an attacking skill with a repair skill while learning.
- Use story missions as your backbone and map activities as optional practice.
- Replace leveling weapons and armor when better items appear; avoid an early perfect-build farm.
- Choose a specialization at level 30 without treating it as a permanent verdict on your character.
- Ignore World Tier and Gear Score instructions from old guides; those systems were removed.
- At level 40, use Targeted Loot and recalibration to improve a functional build.
- Raise difficulty only after you can clear missions consistently.
- Try advanced solo-capable activities later, remembering that availability does not guarantee easy learning.
The most dependable solo “build” is therefore a process: cover first, one source of damage, one source of repair, sensible replacements while leveling, and gradual optimization after level 40. That approach leaves room to switch from turret to drone, from repair to a second attacker, or from firearms to skills as your preferences become clear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pause or save a solo mission in The Division 2?
The game uses checkpoints and activity progress rather than a traditional manual-save slot for every encounter. Before quitting, reach a safe location or a clear checkpoint when possible; you may need to replay part of an unfinished engagement after returning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I change my two equipped skills?
Open the character or skills interface when the game allows access to your loadout, select a skill slot, and choose another unlocked skill or variant. Change skills between encounters to match the problem you are having instead of waiting for a new character.
Is a controller or mouse better for solo play?
Either input method works; the more important factor is being able to aim while moving between cover and quickly trigger armor repair. Use the sensitivity and button layout that let you turn, take cover, and activate skills without exposing yourself.
Do I lose campaign progress if I lower the difficulty?
Lowering the mission or global difficulty changes the challenge and rewards associated with that setting, but it is not a reason to abandon the story. You can raise the setting again after your weapons, armor, and positioning improve.
Can I replay the D.C. story after finishing it?
Story missions can be replayed using the available mission difficulty options, including Story, Normal, Hard, Challenging, and Heroic where offered. Replay is useful for practicing a build or revisiting a mission without creating a new character.
