Ray-Ban Meta battery life depends on the generation: Gen 1 is rated for up to 4 hours of moderate use, while Gen 2 is rated for up to 8 hours. Both generations require a compatible iPhone or Android phone and the Meta AI app. The glasses use open-ear speakers for music and calls, and their capture LED signals photo or video recording—although some newer camera-based AI interactions may not activate that light.
How long does the battery last?
Ray-Ban’s current FAQ rates Gen 1 for up to 4 hours of moderate use and up to 3 hours of continuous audio streaming with voice assistance. Gen 2 is rated for up to 8 hours of moderate use and up to 5 hours of continuous audio streaming with voice assistance. These are different usage conditions, so the moderate-use and continuous-audio figures are not interchangeable.
Meta described Gen 2 as lasting up to eight hours with typical use in its September 17, 2025 announcement. In that context, “up to” matters: actual runtime varies with use and other factors, so frequent audio playback, voice assistance, or camera use may mean charging sooner than the maximum. The figures are manufacturer estimates, not a guarantee that every wearer will get the same time between charges.

What the charging case adds
The Gen 2 charging case provides up to 48 additional hours, according to Ray-Ban and Meta. Ray-Ban describes the earlier model’s fully charged case as providing eight additional frame charges. Those are not directly comparable units: one is expressed as extra hours and the other as a number of frame charges.

Meta said Gen 2 can reach a 50% charge in 20 minutes. That is a charging-speed figure from the September 2025 announcement; it does not establish how long a particular charge will last, nor does it mean that a 20-minute charge replenishes half of the case’s capacity.
Which phones are compatible, and what do I need to set up the glasses?
Ray-Ban’s general requirements are an Android 10-or-newer phone with location services enabled, or an iPhone running iOS 14.4 or later. Setup also requires Bluetooth, wireless internet, a Meta account, and the Meta AI app. A USB-C charging plug is needed if you plan to charge from a wall adapter.
The operating-system minimum is not the only compatibility check. Ray-Ban’s official compatibility PDF lists supported phone families, and Ray-Ban advises checking the exact model and regional support before purchase. A phone can meet the stated OS requirement without being listed as a supported device.

The PDF’s family-level list is useful for narrowing down a phone, but it should not replace checking your exact model. Regional availability and device variants can affect whether a particular phone is supported.
What setup involves
- Check that your phone runs Android 10 or later with location services enabled, or iOS 14.4 or later, and confirm that your specific model is supported.
- Install the Meta AI app and sign in to a Meta account. The glasses use the app and Bluetooth for pairing.
- Have wireless internet available during setup, and use a USB-C charging plug if you need to charge from a wall outlet.
- Complete pairing in the app, then use the app to manage connected glasses and settings.
The app can manage up to two pairs, with one Ray-Ban Stories pair allowed in that combination. That limit concerns pairs managed in the companion app; it does not mean two pairs can be used simultaneously as a single audio device.

Can people tell when the glasses are recording?
For photos and videos, the glasses have a front-facing capture LED intended to signal to people nearby that capture is happening. Ray-Ban describes it as an external-facing light that signals when you are taking a photo or video. There is also an inward notification LED, which is separate from the capture indicator.
There is an important qualification: Ray-Ban says some newer camera-based AI interactions may not turn on the capture LED. Therefore, the LED is a signal for photo or video capture, not a reliable indicator that every camera-based AI feature is inactive whenever the light is off. If you are unsure whether an interaction will activate the camera, check the behavior for that feature rather than treating the LED as a universal status light.
What happens to camera-based AI data?
Ray-Ban says camera-based AI sends a photo to Meta’s cloud for processing and handles information under Meta’s Privacy Policy. Its FAQ says AI photos and videos are not saved in Meta AI conversation history. It also says information is used to provide the requested feature and, in protected form, to improve products; Ray-Ban says facial-recognition technology is not used.
These statements describe the handling of camera-based AI interactions, not a blanket claim that every piece of device or account data is never retained. Consider whether you are comfortable sending an image for cloud processing before using a camera-based AI feature, particularly when other people or sensitive information are in view.
Can I listen to music and take calls with Ray-Ban Meta glasses?
Yes. The glasses use open-ear speakers to play audio streamed from a connected phone, including music and calls. Because the speakers do not seal the ears, they are different from in-ear headphones; the listening experience and how much sound people nearby can hear depend on conditions and volume.

How playback controls work
The touchpad on the right temple handles common playback functions. A tap pauses or resumes playback, a double tap skips forward, and a triple tap skips back. Swiping adjusts volume. Supported voice commands can also control playback and volume.

What happens when you fold the glasses?
Closing the glasses pauses audio streaming. When you reopen them, they reconnect to the audio source over Bluetooth, according to Ray-Ban. This can be useful when taking the glasses off briefly, but it is not the same as permanently disconnecting or turning off the phone’s Bluetooth connection.

No. Ray-Ban says the glasses are IPX4 water resistant, which it characterizes as protection for light rain. IPX4 is not a rating for submersion, swimming, showering, or extended exposure to liquid. Treat the glasses as a wearable device that can tolerate light splashes, not as waterproof eyewear.
If the glasses are exposed to more water than light rain, stop using them and follow the manufacturer’s care guidance rather than assuming the rating covers the situation. The charging case is a separate component; the IPX4 statement about the glasses does not establish that the case has the same resistance.

The clearest documented difference for everyday use is battery endurance. Ray-Ban’s current FAQ gives Gen 2 higher maximums for both moderate use and continuous audio with voice assistance, and its case capacity is expressed as up to 48 additional hours. Meta’s September 2025 announcement also gives Gen 2 a 50%-in-20-minutes charging figure and a $379 USD starting price at announcement.

The battery numbers are maximum manufacturer estimates under different usage descriptions, not a controlled head-to-head test. The documented price is Gen 2’s starting price at its 2025 announcement; it should not be treated as a current price in every market. The information here does not establish region-by-region availability or a current Gen 1 price.
The cited compatibility list is organized by phone family, not by a separate generation-specific matrix. Likewise, the listed privacy, touch controls, and IPX4 water-resistance statements do not establish a generation-by-generation difference for those features. If camera specifications or a particular regional configuration will determine your choice, verify that detail for the exact generation and listing you are considering.
