Raspberry Pi’s own-brand NVMe SSDs come in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB capacities. The drives fit Raspberry Pi 5 through a compatible M.2 adapter; the official SSD Kit bundles a 256GB or 512GB SSD with the Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+ and fitting hardware. The product range was announced on 23 October 2024, and Raspberry Pi says the SSDs and kits will remain in production until at least January 2032.
What Raspberry Pi announced
On 23 October 2024, Raspberry Pi announced its own-brand NVMe SSDs, available on their own or as SSD Kits for Raspberry Pi 5. The company described attaching an NVMe drive as the most popular use of the Pi 5’s PCI Express port; that was its characterization in the launch post, not a quantified independent market-share finding. Raspberry Pi’s launch announcement also framed the products as a way to expand storage and support booting Raspberry Pi OS from an SSD.
Standalone SSD or SSD Kit?
| Option | What it includes | Capacity choices | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone Raspberry Pi SSD | NVMe SSD only | 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB | Requires a compatible M.2 adapter for Raspberry Pi 5, sold separately. Raspberry Pi names its M.2 HAT+ as one compatible example. |
| Raspberry Pi SSD Kit | NVMe SSD, Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+, 16mm stacking header, spacers, and screws | 256GB or 512GB | The bundle includes the adapter board and hardware for fitting it to Raspberry Pi 5. |
The official Raspberry Pi SSD product page lists the standalone range. The SSD Kit product page describes the bundle and its included fitting parts. Both product families are listed for production until at least January 2032.
Drive specifications and published performance
The SSD uses the M.2 2230 form factor and complies with PCIe Gen 3 and NVMe 1.4. The table gives the manufacturers’ published 4kB random-operation specifications, not independent benchmark results. IOPS means input/output operations per second; it does not by itself establish boot time or application performance.

| 256GB | 40k IOPS | 70k IOPS | SSD Kit |
| 512GB | 50k IOPS | 90k IOPS | SSD Kit |
| 1TB | 90k IOPS | 90k IOPS | Standalone SSD |
The kit’s published ambient operating temperature is 0°C to 50°C. Raspberry Pi’s current product pages do not establish independent real-world speed comparisons or endurance figures such as TBW.
What the SSDs cost at launch—and what current pages show
The prices below are the amounts in Raspberry Pi’s 23 October 2024 announcement, not confirmed current prices. At launch, the company said the 256GB drive was available to buy and 512GB variants were available to pre-order for shipping by the end of November 2024. Eben Upton wrote: “The entry-level 256GB drive is priced at $30 on its own, or $40 as a kit; its 512GB big brother is priced at $45 on its own, or $55 as a kit.”

- Compatibility: Pi 5 PCIe M.2 HAT only compatible with Raspberry Pi 5 2GB/4GB/8GB/16GB SBC (NOT include Raspberry Pi 5), NVMe base for Raspberry Pi 5, Model: X1001, the matching case is P579
- M2 Key-M NVMe SSD Supported: Support M.2 KEY-M NVMe SSD 2230/2242/2260/2280 length installation; Comes with SSD copper pillar for 2230/2242/2260 SSD installation
- User Manual and FAQ: Google Geekworm WiKi and search X1001 and its FAQ; Refer to the FAQ to do troubleshoot step by step if can't boot/recognize from NVMe SSD
- Designed as a basic PCIe expansion board for the Raspberry Pi 5, the X1001 features limited standalone hardware functionality and requires proper OS configuration, stable FFC cable connection, and compatibility between firmware and SSDs for reliable operation.
- Power Supply Requirements: The X1001 is powered directly through the PCIe FFC ribbon cable. For stable operation, use the Raspberry Pi 5 PD 27W USB-C Power Supply (5.1V/5A). Note: Standard phone chargers may not provide sufficient power for NVMe SSDs, which can result in SSD instability, data corruption or drive failure.
| Capacity | Standalone launch price | Kit launch price |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $30 | $40 |
| 512GB | $45 | $55 |
Those were launch-era prices in 2024. The current Raspberry Pi product pages reviewed on 4 October 2026 ask buyers to select a model and region to find resellers; they do not establish a current price or live stock level.
