RAM is temporary working memory for the apps and data a computer is using now; storage keeps the operating system, apps, and files when the computer is off. More RAM can help with active work and multitasking. More storage gives you room to keep more data. They do different jobs and cannot substitute for each other.
What is the difference between RAM and storage?
| What to compare | RAM | Storage |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Holds data apps need while they are running so the processor can access it quickly. | Keeps the operating system, applications, and files over time. |
| Does it retain data without power? | Ordinary RAM is volatile: its contents are cleared when power is removed. | SSDs and hard disk drives (HDDs) are persistent; saved data remains when the computer is turned off. |
| What a capacity limit affects | How much active work the computer can handle at once. | How many applications and files can be kept on the device. |
| Typical upgrade, if supported | A compatible memory module or kit. | A compatible internal SSD or an external drive. |
In PC listings, “memory” commonly means RAM, while “storage” or “disk space” means capacity for files. The word “memory” can be used more broadly in technical contexts, so check the specification’s units and component name. RAM is usually listed in GB; storage is also listed in GB or TB, but the two figures describe different resources. Microsoft describes RAM as short-term memory, while Intel explains how active data moves between RAM and storage.
What happens when you run short of one or the other?
When RAM is the constraint
Many open apps, browser tabs, or demanding tasks need active data available in RAM. If there is not enough, the system may move data between RAM and slower storage, which can make work feel less responsive. Adding storage capacity does not provide the same benefit as adding RAM; the components have different roles.
When storage is the constraint
If the drive is nearly full, you may not have room to install applications, download files, or keep photos and videos locally. More RAM will not create that room. Options include removing data you no longer need, using cloud storage, attaching an external drive, or replacing an internal drive with a supported higher-capacity one.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do you need more RAM or more storage?
Start with the problem you are trying to solve, then check the requirements of the applications you use. Microsoft’s Windows buying guidance, accessed in 2026, gives broad ranges by user profile rather than universal minimums:
| Use profile | Microsoft RAM guidance | Microsoft storage guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Basic tasks and general use | At least 4 GB for basic browsing, documents, or streaming; 8 GB for longer-term use, according to Microsoft Support. | Depends on how much you keep locally; Microsoft’s buying guide suggests 128–256 GB where cloud storage is preferred. |
| Multitasking | 8–16 GB. | 512 GB–1 TB for keeping many photos, videos, and documents locally; 128–256 GB where cloud storage is preferred. |
| Photo or video creation | 8–16 GB or more; Microsoft notes editing may need closer to 16 GB. | 256 GB–1 TB or more, depending on how much content is stored locally. |
| Gaming | 16–64 GB. | 512 GB–2 TB or more, depending on the size of the game library and other local files. |
These are Microsoft’s published recommendations, not guarantees that a configuration will suit every workload. Its separate memory explainer and buying guide describe different profiles and contexts, so do not treat the lowest figure as a universal target. Check the specifications for your games, creative software, and other demanding apps before buying or upgrading. - 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Choose more RAM if active work is the issue—for example, you want to keep more apps or tabs open, or your workload includes editing or other memory-intensive tasks.
- Choose more storage if you need space for applications, games, documents, photos, or videos.
- If both are limiting you, address both separately: a larger drive does not increase RAM, and a RAM upgrade does not expand file space.
Can you upgrade a laptop’s RAM or SSD?
Possibly, but upgradeability varies by exact computer model. Some devices do not have user-replaceable RAM, and an internal SSD upgrade is not guaranteed. Do not buy a part based only on a general description of the laptop family: consult the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model and configuration.
Before buying RAM
- Check the supported memory type and form factor.
- Confirm the maximum supported capacity and how many slots are available.
- Verify whether the installed memory is replaceable or soldered and whether an upgrade is supported.
Before buying an SSD
- Confirm the drive interface and physical size the computer supports.
- Check the device’s maximum supported capacity and whether the internal drive can be replaced.
- If considering external storage, confirm the device has a suitable connection for the drive.
Microsoft’s Windows documentation on hard drives and partitions explains storage concepts, but it does not establish compatibility for a particular computer. Only the exact model’s documentation can confirm the appropriate parts.

Is RAM ever persistent storage?
Specialized persistent-memory technology is a technical exception: Microsoft documents a Windows Server configuration in which nonvolatile persistent memory can occupy a DIMM slot and retain data through power cycles. That server-oriented case blurs the boundary between memory and storage; it does not change the everyday distinction between ordinary PC RAM and an SSD or HDD. See Microsoft’s persistent-memory deployment documentation.
