Verdict: The Rakuten American Express Card can be worthwhile if you regularly make eligible Rakuten purchases and can use its elevated shopping and Dining rates. It is less compelling for spending outside Rakuten, where eligible purchases generally earn 1%, and rewards are paid only every three months. The card has a $0 annual fee, but your APR and some fees depend on the individual Cardholder Agreement.
The key distinction is between the card’s own rewards and any separate Cash Back offered by Rakuten’s shopping portal. The card’s current terms provide a card-specific Rakuten reward, bonus categories for eligible groceries and restaurants, and an option to receive confirmed rewards as American Express Membership Rewards points when you meet the program’s eligibility rules.
Is the Rakuten American Express Card worth it?
It is most useful for a shopper who can direct a meaningful share of annual spending through eligible Rakuten merchants, uses Rakuten Dining partners, and either wants quarterly cash payments or already qualifies for Membership Rewards points. It is not a strong all-purpose card if most of your purchases occur outside those categories.

- People who spend enough with eligible Rakuten merchants to use the elevated card rate before the calendar-year threshold is reached.
- People who dine at participating Rakuten Dining merchants and can verify that the transaction qualifies.
- Applicants who are eligible to receive confirmed card rewards as Membership Rewards points and value that option.
- Cardholders who prefer a $0 annual-fee account and can pay the balance in full rather than carrying an APR-dependent balance.
Who should be cautious
- Anyone expecting a high flat rate on every purchase, because other eligible spending earns 1%.
- People who need rewards immediately; confirmed rewards are paid on a quarterly schedule.
- Travel shoppers who assume every travel transaction qualifies for a Rakuten reward. Current offer and merchant terms can exclude some travel purchases.
- Applicants who want automatic airline or hotel transfers. The available evidence supports a Membership Rewards payout option, not a direct card-to-partner transfer promise.
What rewards does the card earn?
The Rakuten American Express Card Help Center’s current card-specific summary, updated in 2026, lists the following rates. “Eligible” matters: merchant coding, offer terms, payment method and exclusions can determine whether a transaction receives the advertised rate.
#1 Best Overall
| Purchase type | Card reward rate | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible Rakuten purchases, online and in-store | 4% through $7,000 of card spending in a calendar year; 1% after that | The elevated rate applies only to eligible Rakuten transaction spending; the annual threshold does not cap all card rewards. |
| Eligible Rakuten Dining purchases | 10% total | The stated total combines the card’s additional reward with the Dining program reward. Dining spending does not count toward the $7,000 Rakuten-purchase threshold. |
| Eligible grocery and restaurant purchases | 2% | Eligibility is based on the merchant category code supplied through the merchant or card network. |
| Other eligible purchases | 1% | This is the broad base rate and is the main limitation for non-Rakuten spending. |
The card reward is separate from any Cash Back Rakuten may advertise for clicking through its shopping portal. A purchase can therefore have two distinct reward questions: whether the portal offer tracks and confirms, and whether the card transaction qualifies for the card’s own rate. Read the store’s offer before assuming both will apply.
How does the $7,000 Rakuten spending threshold work?
The $7,000 figure is a calendar-year spending threshold for the elevated Rakuten purchase rate. It is not a ceiling on total rewards and it does not apply to eligible Rakuten Dining purchases.
| Illustrative eligible Rakuten spending in one calendar year | Card-specific reward calculation | Illustrative reward |
|---|---|---|
| $3,000 | $3,000 × 4% | $120 |
| $7,000 | $7,000 × 4% | $280 |
| $9,000 | First $7,000 × 4%, then $2,000 × 1% | $300 |
These examples assume every transaction is eligible and exclude any separate portal Cash Back. Actual rewards can differ when a merchant is excluded, a transaction is refunded, a payment method does not qualify, or the merchant supplies a different category code.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat does “10% total” mean for Rakuten Dining?
The 10% figure is an eligibility-dependent total for qualifying Rakuten Dining purchases. It is not a universal 10% rate at every restaurant. The total combines the card’s additional Dining reward with the Dining program’s stated reward, and Dining spending is kept outside the separate $7,000 Rakuten-purchase calculation.
Before paying, verify that the restaurant is a current Rakuten Dining participant and that the transaction will be recognized as an eligible Dining purchase. A restaurant payment routed through an unrelated third-party service, a differently coded location, or a transaction outside the offer’s terms may not receive the expected result.
How and when are rewards paid?
Confirmed rewards are paid every three months using the method you select: a check, PayPal, or American Express Membership Rewards points when you are eligible for that option. “Confirmed” means Rakuten has completed its confirmation process; a pending reward is not yet payable.
Quarterly payment changes the card’s practical value. If you need statement credits or instant points, this schedule is less convenient than a card that posts rewards continuously. Keep records of large purchases and their confirmation status so you can identify a missing reward before the relevant payment cycle closes.

Can the card earn American Express Membership Rewards points?
It can, but points are not automatic for every applicant. The card’s confirmed rewards may be directed to Membership Rewards points subject to program eligibility. That is different from Rakuten’s separate portal-to-points arrangement, which requires linking another eligible U.S. Membership Rewards card.
Rakuten’s FAQ specifically states that the Rakuten American Express Card itself is not eligible for that separate portal program. In practical terms, do not apply this card expecting it to unlock a direct conversion of every portal purchase into airline or hotel points. Confirm your eligibility for the card’s payout option and review the current program rules before selecting points.
Which purchases qualify, and why can a bonus be denied?
Reward eligibility can depend on information the merchant or card network sends with the transaction. The official terms say Rakuten or Imprint determines the amount eligible for Rakuten transaction rewards, while grocery and restaurant qualification relies on the merchant category code.
Merchant coding
A grocery purchase can fail to receive the grocery rate if the merchant is coded in another category. The same issue can occur when a restaurant payment is processed by a delivery company, marketplace, hotel, stadium, or other intermediary rather than by the restaurant itself. A receipt’s description does not override the code used for rewards.

Store and payment-method exclusions
Offer terms can exclude Coupons Only stores, some travel transactions, gift-card purchases, or purchases made through Buy Now, Pay Later services. The exact exclusion list can change, so check the current store offer and card terms before a large transaction. A help article published in July 2026 displayed a different cap figure, but newer card-specific help pages and another official FAQ identify $7,000 for this card; use the current card-specific terms when calculating the elevated rate.
Separate portal tracking
Even when the card transaction qualifies, a portal Cash Back offer can remain pending or be declined under the store’s rules. Save the offer details, confirmation email and order information for expensive purchases. The card reward and portal reward are separate records and may follow different confirmation timelines.
What fees and pricing should you expect?
The card help page states a $0 annual fee. It does not provide one universal APR for every applicant: the APR may be variable or fixed depending on credit profile, and the current amount appears in your Cardholder Agreement or Imprint account.

| Charge or term | What the published summary says | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | $0 | Confirm the offer and agreement associated with your account. |
| APR | May be variable or fixed depending on credit profile | Use your individual Cardholder Agreement; do not substitute a generic rate. |
| Late payment | Up to $27 for a first instance and up to $35 for subsequent instances | Check the agreement for the amount that applies to your account. |
| Returned payment | $35 | Confirm the current fee in the agreement. |
| Minimum interest | $1 where applicable | Check how your account calculates interest. |
| Foreign-currency conversion | A fee may apply | Do not assume foreign transactions are fee-free; read the agreement. |
The card is issued by First Electronic Bank under an American Express license and powered by Imprint Payments. Those parties and the Cardholder Agreement, rather than a generic comparison page, control the terms on your account.
How should you compare this card with alternatives?
Compare the same spending pattern across cards instead of comparing headline rates in isolation. The useful question is how much of your actual budget receives the bonus rate after eligibility checks and the annual threshold.
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rakuten shopping return | How much eligible Rakuten spending will I make before the calendar year ends? | The elevated rate applies only within the card’s stated threshold. |
| Dining and grocery categories | Are my restaurants and groceries likely to receive the correct merchant codes? | Category coding can change the reward rate. |
| Non-bonus spending | What percentage of my budget falls outside Rakuten, Dining, grocery and restaurant categories? | That spending generally earns 1% on this card. |
| Annual fee and APR | Will I pay the balance in full, and what pricing appears in my agreement? | A $0 annual fee does not eliminate interest or account fees. |
| Payout timing | Can I wait for quarterly payment? | Confirmed rewards are not paid continuously. |
| Redemption flexibility | Do I qualify for the points payout, or do I prefer check or PayPal? | The points option is eligibility-dependent. |
A flat-rate cash-back card can be simpler when most spending occurs outside Rakuten. This card’s differentiator is the Rakuten-linked earning structure, not a superior return on every purchase. An independent September 1, 2026 review by CNBC Select described the same trade-off: value improves for a shopper able to use the Membership Rewards option, while quarterly payments and the 1% rate on other eligible purchases reduce flexibility.
How can you estimate your own value?
Use a full-year estimate rather than a single high-rate purchase. Separate your spending into Rakuten purchases, Rakuten Dining, eligible groceries and restaurants, and everything else. Then remove transactions that may fail the merchant’s offer terms.
- List eligible Rakuten purchases. Estimate the amount you will actually put on this card during the calendar year, not your total shopping budget.
- Apply the threshold. Treat the first $7,000 of qualifying Rakuten purchase spending at the elevated rate and the remainder at the stated post-threshold rate.
- Model Dining separately. Do not subtract qualifying Dining spending from the Rakuten-purchase threshold.
- Classify groceries and restaurants. Use realistic merchant coding, especially for delivery platforms, warehouse stores and marketplaces.
- Assign the base rate to everything else. This prevents a high Rakuten estimate from hiding the opportunity cost of 1% non-bonus spending.
- Choose a payout method. Include the value of quarterly timing and whether you are eligible for points, rather than assuming cash and points are interchangeable.
- Check your agreement. Subtract any interest you expect to pay and account for fees shown in your own Cardholder Agreement.
What are the main pitfalls, and how can you avoid them?
Counting portal Cash Back as a guaranteed card reward
Portal Cash Back and the card reward are distinct. Keep separate estimates and wait for each program to confirm the transaction.
Assuming every restaurant earns 10%
The 10% total requires an eligible Rakuten Dining transaction. Verify the participating merchant and payment conditions before relying on that rate.
Ignoring the calendar-year reset
The elevated Rakuten purchase allowance is measured by calendar-year card spending. Track your qualifying total so you know when later purchases move to the lower rate.

Using the card for expensive non-bonus purchases
If a large purchase is not eligible for a Rakuten, Dining, grocery or restaurant rate, model it at 1% and compare that result with a card offering a stronger general return.
Carrying a balance because the annual fee is zero
The absence of an annual fee does not make interest free. Use the APR in your agreement and avoid carrying a balance unless the reward value clearly exceeds the financing cost, which is uncommon for ordinary purchases.

- That the current application offer still shows a $0 annual fee.
- The APR, late-payment fee, returned-payment fee and minimum-interest charge in the agreement presented to you.
- Whether your intended merchants qualify for Rakuten shopping or Dining rewards under their current offers.
- Whether your preferred payout is check, PayPal or Membership Rewards points and whether you meet the points program’s eligibility requirements.
- Whether any planned travel, gift-card or Buy Now, Pay Later transaction is excluded.
- Whether quarterly payments fit your cash-flow needs.
Bottom line: who should get the Rakuten American Express Card?
Choose it when Rakuten shopping and eligible Dining make up a substantial, repeatable part of your spending and you are comfortable waiting for quarterly rewards. The $0 annual fee and points payout option can add flexibility for eligible cardholders, but the 1% rate on other purchases, merchant-code uncertainty and account-specific pricing keep it from being an automatic everyday-card choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens to pending Cash Back if I close the card?
The official card help page says pending Cash Back expires immediately when the card is canceled or closed. Wait for rewards to be confirmed and paid before closing the account if preserving an expected payout matters.
Where can I find the APR that applies to my account?
Use the Cardholder Agreement supplied with your account or the current information in your Imprint account. The generic help summary does not establish one APR for every cardholder.
Why might a grocery or restaurant purchase receive only the base rate?
The reward decision uses the merchant category code supplied by the merchant or network, not simply the name on your receipt. Check how the transaction posted and retain documentation if the coding appears wrong; a third-party processor may have classified the purchase outside the expected category.
Should I use the card for an overseas purchase?
Check the foreign-currency and travel provisions in your current agreement first. The published summary warns that a foreign-currency conversion fee may apply and that some travel transactions can be excluded from an offer.
