RAG and knowledge graphs solve different context problems, and an enterprise often needs both. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) finds information relevant to a user’s query and places it in an AI model’s context. A knowledge graph represents entities and their relationships explicitly, allowing retrieval to follow connections among facts. Use document-focused RAG for source passages, factual lookups and summaries; consider graph retrieval when the answer depends on connected entities, paths or multi-hop evidence. A hybrid design can combine keyword, vector, graph and source-document retrieval.

The right choice depends on the questions your users ask, the evidence you must show, how often data changes, access-control requirements, latency targets and the effort your team can maintain. There is no generally valid cost or performance threshold that makes one architecture best for every enterprise.

What is retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)?

RAG is a system pattern in which a generative AI model is paired with a separate information-retrieval system or knowledge base. For each user query, the system identifies relevant information and supplies it to the model as context. The model can then use current or private information without having that information embedded in its parameters or retraining the model, as described by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

RAG does not mean “ask a model to search” in a single fixed way. The retrieval component may use keyword search, vector similarity, metadata filters, SQL, an API, a graph, or several of these together. The defining feature is that external, query-relevant information is selected at run time and passed to the model.

How a document-oriented RAG pipeline works

A common implementation follows this sequence, although production systems add routing, security, monitoring and quality controls:

  1. Ingest sources. Collect approved files, web pages, tickets, database records or other enterprise content, while preserving source identifiers, permissions and dates.
  2. Clean and segment. Normalize formats and split long material into chunks that can be retrieved without losing necessary context. Chunk boundaries, overlap and metadata affect what the retriever can find.
  3. Create indexes. Generate embeddings for semantic search and, where useful, create a keyword index. Store metadata such as document type, owner, version, region and access policy.
  4. Retrieve for a query. Search for relevant chunks, apply filters and rank candidates. Systems may combine keyword and vector retrieval and then rerank results; Microsoft documents this pattern for Azure AI Search.
  5. Assemble context. Select passages that fit the model’s context limit, remove duplicates and attach citations or source labels.
  6. Generate and monitor. Ask the model to answer from the supplied evidence, expose citations where required, and record retrieval and answer-quality signals.

AWS describes the core cleaning, chunking, embedding, indexing and retrieval flow in its RAG guidance, while noting that a production deployment needs capabilities beyond the basic loop.

What is a knowledge graph, and what does GraphRAG add?

A knowledge graph stores identifiable entities as nodes and the relationships between them as edges. A node might represent a customer, product, contract, site or regulation; an edge can express “owned by,” “depends on,” “applies to” or “supersedes.” Properties on nodes and edges can hold dates, values, confidence, provenance and permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GraphRAG uses that explicit structure during retrieval or generation. Depending on its design, it can return an entity, a relationship (triple), a path, a subgraph, a textual description or a summary of a graph community. The AWS GraphRAG explanation describes these graph-oriented retrieval patterns, and an ACM survey separates graph-based indexing, graph-guided retrieval and graph-enhanced generation as related pipeline stages.

Building a graph normally involves defining or adopting a schema, extracting entities and relations from source material, resolving duplicate entities, validating facts, recording provenance and updating changed relationships. Some systems keep the original passages attached to graph elements so an answer can show both the connection and the source text. Others combine graph traversal with vector or keyword retrieval.

What is the difference between RAG and a knowledge graph for AI context?

RAG is primarily a retrieval-and-generation pattern; a knowledge graph is a structured representation of entities and relationships. RAG can retrieve from a graph, and a graph can be one component inside a broader RAG workflow, so they are not mutually exclusive categories.

Decision axis Document-oriented RAG Knowledge-graph retrieval Hybrid approach
Typical retrieval unit Text chunk, record, passage or document excerpt Entity, edge, path, subgraph, graph description or summary Graph elements plus source passages and search results
Best-fit question shape Specific fact, policy excerpt, factual knowledge-base question or summary Questions requiring relationships, dependencies, lineage or multi-hop connections Questions that need both connected facts and the wording or evidence in source documents
Data preparation Ingestion, cleaning, chunking, embeddings, keyword indexes and metadata Schema design, entity and relation extraction, entity resolution, validation, provenance and graph updates Both document indexing and graph construction, with synchronization between them
Source traceability Usually direct passage citations if chunk metadata is preserved Requires provenance on nodes and edges, often with links back to source passages Can show the path or subgraph and the passages that support each element
Infrastructure Search or vector store, embedding service and model orchestration Graph database or equivalent store, extraction pipeline, traversal and graph-aware retrieval Multiple indexes and a query planner or router
Maintenance focus Re-index changed or new content and keep permissions synchronized Update entities, relationships, schema constraints, provenance and affected summaries Keep graph and document representations consistent and secure

The table describes design tendencies, not guarantees. Measure each option on your own questions and evidence requirements rather than treating a vendor description as an independent benchmark.

Which enterprise questions fit conventional RAG?

Conventional RAG is a strong starting point when the answer can be supported by a small set of passages or records and the wording of those sources matters.

Specific factual lookups

Questions such as “What is the expense limit for a domestic trip?” or “Which steps are required to rotate a certificate?” can often be answered by retrieving the current policy section or runbook excerpt. Metadata filters can restrict retrieval to the employee’s region, business unit, product version or effective date.

Knowledge-base answers and summaries

Support agents and employees may ask for a summary of a procedure, the main differences between two internal options or the key points in a set of approved documents. RAG can retrieve the relevant passages and ask the model to summarize them with citations.

Content where exact wording is important

Legal clauses, safety instructions and compliance language may require quoting or closely paraphrasing the source. Passage retrieval keeps the original wording available, provided chunking preserves the necessary surrounding definitions and exceptions.

Microsoft’s Copilot Studio guidance describes RAG as suitable for factual knowledge-base questions, summaries and specific facts. It cautions that the described pattern is not intended for full-document comparison, policy-compliance evaluation or complex reasoning over long unstructured documents. Those cautions do not mean RAG can never participate in such a system; they indicate that a simple retrieve-a-few-chunks design may be insufficient.

When does a knowledge graph improve context retrieval?

Graph retrieval is a candidate when the answer depends on connections among several facts and those connections are difficult to recover reliably from isolated text chunks.

Multi-hop relationship questions

Consider “Which suppliers are affected by a regulation that applies to components used in our European facilities?” Answering it may require traversing regulation-to-component, component-to-supplier and supplier-to-facility relationships. A graph can make those hops explicit and constrain the traversal to known relationship types.

Dependencies, lineage and impact analysis

Questions about upstream systems, downstream services, ownership, data lineage or change impact naturally map to paths in a graph. Returning the path can help a reviewer see why an entity was included instead of receiving a list of semantically similar paragraphs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Entity-centric exploration

For a customer, product, project or incident, a graph can gather related contracts, people, systems, events and risks. The model can receive a subgraph or a generated description, while the application retains identifiers and provenance for verification.

Graph structure does not automatically make answers accurate. Incorrect extraction, unresolved duplicate entities, stale edges or an incomplete schema can produce a confidently wrong path. Graph construction and maintenance therefore need validation, ownership and source-level provenance.

Should an enterprise choose RAG or a knowledge graph?

Choose based on the shape of the questions and the evidence the answer must preserve, not on the label of the technology.

Use document RAG first when

  • Your sources are mostly documents and the expected answer is supported by a few passages.
  • Users ask current policy, procedure, product or support questions.
  • You need a relatively direct ingestion path and can evaluate chunk retrieval.
  • The primary evidence is the source wording rather than an inferred relationship.

Prioritize graph retrieval when

  • Users routinely ask “how is X connected to Y?” or require several relationship hops.
  • Dependencies, ownership, lineage, hierarchies or eligibility rules are central to the answer.
  • You can define stable entity and relationship types and assign owners to maintain them.
  • Showing a path, subgraph or relationship explanation is valuable to reviewers.

Use a hybrid when

  • The graph identifies the right entities or path, but the final answer must quote source documents.
  • Keyword search is needed for exact terms while vector search handles paraphrases.
  • Some domains have high-quality structured data and others remain unstructured.
  • A question may begin as a lookup and then require relationship expansion.

Google Research describes RAG context that can combine sources such as web pages, private corpora and knowledge graphs in its discussion of sufficient context. This supports treating graph data as an additional context source rather than assuming a graph must replace text retrieval.

How do you design a hybrid RAG and graph architecture?

A hybrid system needs an explicit plan for routing, evidence assembly and conflict handling. A practical design can follow these steps.

  1. Classify the query. Detect whether it is a direct lookup, a semantic passage request, an entity relationship question, a comparison, or a multi-hop investigation. Classification can be rule-based, model-assisted or selected by the application workflow.
  2. Resolve entities and permissions. Map names and aliases to canonical identifiers. Apply the user’s access controls before graph traversal or document retrieval, not only after generation.
  3. Run the appropriate retrievals. Use keyword and vector search for passages, graph traversal for relationships, or both. Keep query parameters and retrieved identifiers for audit logs.
  4. Join evidence. Attach source passages to graph nodes and edges where possible. Preserve document version, effective date, source owner and confidence so the model can distinguish a current rule from an obsolete one.
  5. Rank and trim context. Remove duplicates, resolve contradictory versions according to a declared policy and fit the highest-value evidence within the model’s context limit.
  6. Generate with constraints. Instruct the model to answer only from supplied evidence, identify uncertainty and cite the supporting passage or graph element. For high-impact workflows, require a structured output that downstream systems can validate.
  7. Escalate when evidence is inadequate. Return a clarification request, “insufficient evidence” result or human-review task instead of filling gaps with an unsupported inference.

What data preparation and maintenance does each approach require?

RAG preparation

  • Inventory authoritative sources and remove content that should not be indexed.
  • Extract text and tables while retaining headings, page references, document IDs and effective dates.
  • Choose chunk boundaries that preserve definitions, exceptions and procedural steps.
  • Generate embeddings and keyword indexes, then test retrieval on real queries.
  • Synchronize deletions, revisions and access-control changes; stale chunks can remain discoverable if deletion pipelines are incomplete.

Graph preparation

  • Define entity types, relationship predicates, identifiers, cardinality rules and provenance fields.
  • Extract candidate entities and relations from documents or operational systems.
  • Resolve aliases and duplicates without merging distinct entities.
  • Validate extracted facts against authoritative systems and record confidence or review status.
  • Model temporal validity, supersession and permissions so a traversal does not combine facts from incompatible periods or audiences.
  • Update affected nodes, edges, indexes and summaries when source facts change.

Graph work can improve retrieval for relationship-heavy questions, but it adds schema and data-quality responsibilities. Conversely, document RAG is quicker to start only when ingestion and chunk quality are controlled; poor segmentation or missing metadata can make a seemingly simple system unreliable.

How should governance and source traceability work?

Enterprise context is useful only if the system can show where it came from and who was allowed to see it. For every retrieved item, retain a stable source identifier, version or timestamp, owner, access classification and retrieval event. For graph data, store provenance on individual facts or relationships rather than only on the graph as a whole.

Apply authorization during retrieval. Filtering after a model has already received unauthorized text or graph facts is not a safe control. Test inherited permissions, deleted documents, tenant boundaries and regional restrictions with adversarial queries.

When sources conflict, define precedence rules such as effective date, authoritative system, approval state or jurisdiction. Tell the model how to report unresolved conflicts. A citation should lead a reviewer to the exact passage or graph fact used, not merely to a home page.

What are the latency, infrastructure and cost trade-offs?

A basic RAG request may perform one or more searches, reranking and model generation. A graph request may add entity resolution, traversal, subgraph construction and graph-to-text serialization. A hybrid request can perform both. Actual latency depends on index size, query planning, network placement, model choice, context length, caching and concurrency; the cited materials do not establish a universal cutoff.

Infrastructure complexity also depends on operational requirements. A document system needs dependable ingestion, index refresh, embedding operations and permission synchronization. A graph system additionally needs schema governance, extraction and validation pipelines, entity resolution and graph updates. A hybrid system must monitor consistency between representations and decide which system is authoritative when they disagree.

Estimate cost from measured workloads rather than vendor claims: count ingestion and update frequency, storage, retrieval calls, graph traversals, model tokens, reranking, observability and human review. Include the cost of correcting stale or incorrectly extracted facts, not just cloud-service invoices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can you evaluate RAG, graph retrieval and hybrid designs?

Build an evaluation set from representative enterprise questions, including easy lookups, ambiguous wording, multi-hop relationships, outdated documents, permission boundaries and questions with no supported answer. Have domain owners define the acceptable evidence and expected answer scope.

Measure retrieval

  • Precision: How much of the retrieved context is relevant and permitted?
  • Coverage: Did retrieval include every passage, entity or relationship needed?
  • Relationship fidelity: For graph questions, are the returned paths and edge directions correct?
  • Freshness: Did the result use the current effective version?

Measure generated answers

  • Correctness: Does the answer match the approved facts?
  • Grounding: Can each material claim be traced to supplied evidence?
  • Completeness: Are required exceptions, qualifiers and relationship hops included?
  • Uncertainty behavior: Does the system decline or ask for clarification when evidence is missing?
  • Citation quality: Can a reviewer open the exact supporting source?

Measure operations

  • Latency at realistic concurrency and context sizes.
  • Update delay from source change to searchable evidence.
  • Authorization accuracy, including revocation and cross-tenant tests.
  • Failure and recovery time for index, extraction or graph-service outages.
  • Engineering and review effort required to maintain quality.

Compare systems on the same questions, source snapshots and access policies. The available guidance does not justify a single numeric score that decides architecture selection, so document the trade-offs and keep the evaluation set versioned as the business changes.

What commonly goes wrong, and how do you fix it?

The answer cites a related but wrong passage

Check chunk boundaries, metadata filters, query expansion and reranking. Add document version and jurisdiction fields, then test exact terminology with keyword retrieval alongside vector search.

A graph returns an incorrect relationship

Inspect the extraction record, entity-resolution decision, edge direction, validity dates and source provenance. Mark uncertain edges for review and prevent unvalidated facts from being treated as authoritative.

The model combines incompatible facts

Include effective dates and scope in every retrieved item. Apply temporal and permission filters before context assembly, and instruct the generator to report conflicts instead of silently merging them.

Multi-hop answers omit a necessary step

Represent the required relationship types explicitly, set traversal limits deliberately and return the path for inspection. If the graph is incomplete, supplement it with source-document retrieval and state the missing evidence.

Responses are slow or exceed context limits

Reduce duplicate passages, summarize graph neighborhoods before generation, cache stable lookups and use staged retrieval: broad candidate search followed by focused expansion. Measure whether each added retrieval stage improves answer quality enough to justify its latency.

Users receive information they should not see

Enforce authorization at ingestion, index or graph-query time and again when assembling context. Test deletion and permission-revocation flows, and log which identifiers were exposed to the model.

Which architecture fits common enterprise scenarios?

Scenario Likely starting point Why Important qualification
Employee asks for a current travel policy rule Document RAG with metadata filters The answer is usually a specific, dated passage. Filter by region, employee group and effective date.
Support agent summarizes troubleshooting steps Document RAG Source procedures and version-specific notes are central. Retrieve the product version and preserve citations.
Engineer asks what services depend on a database Graph retrieval Dependencies and ownership form explicit paths. Validate graph freshness against operational inventories.
Compliance analyst traces a rule to affected suppliers Hybrid graph plus document RAG The graph finds connected entities; documents provide the regulatory wording. Keep jurisdiction, validity and source provenance on every hop.
Executive asks for a narrative across reports, tickets and systems Hybrid retrieval Different source types contribute passages, entities and events. Evaluate completeness and contradiction handling, not only fluency.

What is the practical decision process?

Start with the question inventory, not a database product. Label a representative sample by retrieval need: passage lookup, semantic summary, exact-term search, relationship traversal, multi-hop reasoning, comparison or no-answer case. Estimate the evidence each label requires and identify the authoritative source.

Implement the least complex design that meets those requirements. A well-governed document RAG baseline gives you a reference for retrieval quality and latency. Add graph structures where tests show that isolated passages miss relationships or produce unverifiable chains. If both are needed, define routing and provenance before adding more indexes.

Review the system with domain experts and security owners. A design that answers a benchmark set but cannot enforce access, show evidence or absorb updates is not ready for enterprise use. Re-run the evaluation after major schema, chunking, model or source changes.

What should you remember about RAG versus knowledge graphs?

RAG supplies query-relevant external information to a model; a knowledge graph supplies explicit entities and relationships that retrieval can traverse. RAG is usually the simpler fit for passage-grounded facts and summaries. Graph retrieval is a candidate for dependency, lineage and multi-hop questions, but only when graph quality and maintenance are strong. In many enterprises, the durable answer is a hybrid system that retrieves graph structure and the source text supporting it, then evaluates the result against real questions, permissions, freshness and evidence standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a vector database replace a knowledge graph?

A vector index can retrieve semantically similar passages or records, but similarity alone does not guarantee an explicit, correct relationship path. If users need dependable traversal of ownership, dependency or lineage, test a graph or another structured representation alongside vector retrieval.

Do I need to build a knowledge graph before launching RAG?

No. You can launch a governed document-RAG baseline when the initial questions are passage-oriented. Build graph structures when evaluation shows that relationship-heavy questions remain incomplete or difficult to verify with documents alone.

How do graphs reduce hallucinations in enterprise AI?

A graph can constrain retrieval to known entities and relationship types and expose a path for review. It does not prevent hallucinations by itself: incorrect extraction, stale edges or missing provenance can still produce unsupported answers, so source citations and validation remain necessary.

What data should be stored with graph relationships for AI use?

Store stable entity identifiers, relationship type and direction, source reference, validity period, confidence or review state, owner and access classification. Those fields let retrieval filter facts safely and let reviewers trace a generated claim back to its origin.
