The IAF’s Rafale, Tejas and Su-30MKI are complementary fighters, not interchangeable entries in a simple ranking. India’s Ministry of Defence describes Rafale as an “omni-role” aircraft with long-range reach, gives Tejas roles spanning air defence, maritime reconnaissance and strike, and documents Su-30MKI integration with the air-launched BrahMos missile. Those descriptions show different emphases; they do not establish which aircraft is best in every mission.
How their stated roles differ
The clearest comparison is the one supported by official role descriptions and documented examples. “Multirole” does not mean that each aircraft has the same emphasis, configuration or intended use.
| Aircraft | Official role or documented example | What that supports |
|---|---|---|
| Rafale | The Ministry of Defence called it an “omni-role” fighter and highlighted long-range engagement of targets in depth. Ministry of Defence, Year End Review – 2019 | A multirole platform whose official framing emphasizes long-range reach and strike. |
| Tejas | The Ministry says it was designed for air defence, maritime reconnaissance and strike. The Mk-1 FOC induction release describes it as single-engine, lightweight, all-weather and multirole, and notes air-to-air refuelling capability. Ministry of Defence, 30 June 2023; Ministry of Defence, 27 May 2020 | A light combat aircraft with three explicitly stated mission roles; “lightweight” alone does not establish a mission limitation. |
| Su-30MKI | The Ministry documented integration of the air-launched BrahMos and a test against a sea target. Ministry of Defence, Year End Review – 2019 | A concrete example of a long-range strike capability with a maritime-strike dimension. |
What each aircraft’s role description means
Rafale: omni-role and long-range reach
The Ministry’s 2019 review described Rafale as an “omni-role” fighter able to engage targets in depth at long range. That is an official description of its intended capability, not a claim that it outperforms the other two in every circumstance.
Tejas: air defence, maritime reconnaissance and strike
The Ministry’s role description for Tejas names three missions: air defence, maritime reconnaissance and strike. Its Mk-1 FOC release also identifies the aircraft as single-engine, lightweight, all-weather and multirole, and notes air-to-air refuelling capability. These descriptors add context, but do not provide a matched performance comparison with Rafale or Su-30MKI.

Su-30MKI: BrahMos integration as a strike example
The Su-30MKI’s integration with the air-launched BrahMos is a documented example of its strike role. The Ministry’s 2019 review records a test against a sea target, illustrating a maritime-strike application. This is evidence of a particular weapon integration and test, not a complete account of every Su-30MKI mission or configuration.
Why there is no evidence-based single winner
A fair head-to-head judgment would need to define the mission and compare aircraft in specified variants and configurations, with their weapons and support arrangements. The cited official material provides role descriptions and selected examples, not a common set of performance specifications or a shared head-to-head test. It therefore supports comparing emphasis, but not an overall ranking.
Rank #2
- IFF antenna array in front of the cockpit distinguishes this CCIP-equipped model from other F-16s.
- Curved form of the F-16 accurately reproduced with trademark Tamiya precision.
- Moveable horizontal stabilizers. "Flaperons" can be modelled in the up or down positions.
- Full ordnance load including AGM-88 HARM, AIM-120C AMRAAM, AIM-9M/X Sidewinder, ECM pod, and fuel tanks included.
- Centerline and inner wing pylons as well as tail assembly feature polycaps to allow easy detachment for storage.
For the same reason, the historical procurement figures below should not be read as current fleet totals:
- The Ministry’s 2019 review said 272 Su-30MKI aircraft had been contracted under various contracts. That is a historical contract figure, not a count of aircraft currently active or available.
- The Ministry’s 2017 review recorded an India-France agreement for 36 Rafale aircraft, signed on 23 September 2016. That is the agreement quantity, not a current inventory figure.
The cited sources do not establish a current, comparable inventory total for all three aircraft.

What the 2026 Rafale approval does—and does not—mean
On 12 February 2026, the Defence Acquisition Council approved an Acceptance of Necessity for IAF MRFA identified as Rafale. The Ministry said the proposed procurement would enhance air-dominance capability and support long-range offensive strikes. Ministry of Defence, 12 February 2026
An Acceptance of Necessity is an approval milestone, not proof that a contract has been signed, aircraft delivered, or aircraft inducted. The cited announcement does not establish any of those later steps.
