For Qwen3.8-27B, “full precision” in the documented vLLM recipe means BF16—not FP32. The 8-bit and 4-bit options also are not single, interchangeable formats: the official FP8 checkpoint, an Apple-silicon MLX conversion, INT4 W4A16, and NVFP4 W4A4 differ in how they represent weights and activations, their hardware support, and their memory needs.

Use the comparison below to estimate storage and GPU requirements, then choose by the exact checkpoint and runtime you plan to use. Smaller weight files can make deployment possible on less memory, but the file size alone does not tell you the full serving footprint or how well a quantized build will perform on your tasks.

How the Qwen3.8-27B options compare

The figures below come from the vLLM Project’s mutable deployment recipe, checked in 2026. Storage is the checkpoint’s listed on-disk size; VRAM is that recipe’s minimum estimate, not a guarantee of usable context length or throughput.

Build Weight and activation format Checkpoint size Recipe minimum VRAM Important qualification
BF16 baseline BF16 weights 55,563,006,776 bytes on disk; 51.7 GiB of weights 67 GB The recipe calls this “Full-precision BF16”; it is not FP32.
Official FP8 Block-scaled FP8; Qwen’s card specifies fine-grained FP8 with block size 128 30,866,866,928 bytes on disk; 28.7 GiB of weights 38 GB Qwen says its performance metrics are nearly identical to the original; this is the publisher’s claim, not an independent comparison.
RedHatAI INT4 W4A16: 4-bit weights, 16-bit activations 19.5 GB 24 GB This is not an all-4-bit computation.
Inferact NVFP4 W4A4: 4-bit weights and 4-bit activations 26.4 GB 32 GB The recipe lists this build for NVIDIA Blackwell hardware.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What “full precision” means here

In this deployment comparison, the reference is BF16. The vLLM recipe lists 55,563,006,776 bytes on disk (51.7 GiB of weights) and estimates a 67 GB minimum VRAM requirement. Calling it “full precision” distinguishes it from the reduced-precision variants in that recipe; it does not mean the model is stored in FP32.

That distinction matters when comparing memory claims: an FP32 figure would describe a different representation. Use the specific checkpoint’s format and size rather than assuming that “full precision” always means the same datatype across articles or tools.

What 8-bit means for this model

Official Qwen FP8 checkpoint

Qwen’s published FP8 checkpoint is a block-scaled FP8 build. Its card specifies fine-grained FP8 quantization with a block size of 128. The vLLM recipe lists it at 30,866,866,928 bytes on disk (28.7 GiB of weights) and estimates 38 GB minimum VRAM.

Qwen’s model card says its “performance metrics are nearly identical to those of the original model.” Treat that as Qwen’s statement about its checkpoint, not as an independently verified, apples-to-apples result for every task or runtime. The card is available at Qwen3.8-27B-FP8.

Community MLX 8-bit conversion

A nominal 8-bit label does not guarantee that every model component is stored at 8 bits. The incept5 MLX conversion targets Apple silicon and keeps the vision tower in BF16. Its card estimates about 9.4 bits per weight overall; that estimate applies to this conversion, not to 8-bit quantization generally. See the incept5 MLX 8-bit model card.

This is a different deployment path from Qwen’s official FP8 checkpoint. Compare the actual format, preserved higher-precision components, and runtime support—not just the “8-bit” label.

Why the 4-bit options are not equivalent

INT4 W4A16

The RedHatAI recipe entry uses 4-bit weights with 16-bit activations. Its checkpoint is listed as 19.5 GB, with a 24 GB minimum VRAM estimate. It reduces weight storage, but activations are not 4-bit.

NVFP4 W4A4

The Inferact entry uses 4-bit weights and 4-bit activations, is listed at 26.4 GB, and has a 32 GB minimum VRAM estimate. The recipe lists it for NVIDIA Blackwell hardware. Although both builds are described as 4-bit, their activation formats, storage sizes, and stated hardware scope differ.

Use the exact checkpoint and its serving recipe to assess compatibility. The vLLM recipe’s selected NVFP4 configuration for a single RTX 5090 specifies a 32K context, FP8 KV cache, and --enforce-eager. Those are configuration details for that recipe, not universal requirements for all Qwen3.8-27B deployments.

How much VRAM do you need?

For the builds listed by vLLM, the minimum estimates range from 24 GB for RedHatAI INT4 W4A16 to 67 GB for the BF16 baseline. Use the estimate for the specific build as a starting point, not as a promise that the model will run at every context length or deliver a particular speed.

Serving needs more than the weights. Runtime overhead and the KV cache also consume memory, and cache demand is affected by context length. A machine that meets a recipe’s minimum may therefore have less memory available for a long context or other processes. Check the exact serving flags and hardware notes in the vLLM recipe before deployment.

How to choose a build

  1. Check where you plan to run it. Match the checkpoint to the hardware and serving software it documents. For example, the cited MLX conversion targets Apple silicon, while the recipe lists Inferact NVFP4 for Blackwell hardware.
  2. Confirm the representation, not only the bit label. Distinguish BF16 weights, block-scaled FP8, W4A16, and W4A4. Check whether any model components remain at higher precision.
  3. Budget memory beyond checkpoint storage. Compare the recipe’s VRAM estimate with the memory available for runtime overhead and KV cache at your intended context length.
  4. Evaluate quality on your own workload. A bit count does not predict task quality by itself. Compare the exact builds on the prompts and tasks that matter to you, using the same runtime and evaluation conditions.

What is known about quality—and what is not

The evidence available for these named builds does not establish a controlled, apples-to-apples quality ranking across BF16, FP8, INT4 W4A16, and NVFP4 W4A4. Qwen’s near-identical-performance statement is specific to its FP8 card and is a publisher claim. The incept5 card’s smoke test is not a cross-quantization benchmark.
