The most useful quarterly-results review is a two-layer scorecard: six lenses that apply to every company, followed by operating and risk measures specific to its business model. Read growth, profitability, cash generation, balance-sheet capacity, forward visibility and earnings quality together. Then test whether loans and deposits, premiums and reserves, orders and inventory, or recurring revenue and retention support the reported result. A headline EPS beat is not enough if cash conversion, credit quality, capital or guidance deteriorated.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banks | Judging spread income, credit risk and capital capacity | NII/NIM, loan and deposit trends, provisions, charge-offs, CET1 and liquidity | Oct 2026 |
| Insurers | Separating underwriting performance from investment gains and reserve changes | Premium growth, loss and expense ratios, combined ratio, catastrophe losses, reserve development, solvency | Oct 2026 |
| Manufacturers | Explaining demand, factory execution and cash conversion | Volume-price-mix, orders/backlog, segment margin, utilization, inventory, capex and free cash flow | Oct 2026 |
| Technology companies | Testing recurring demand, customer economics and investment intensity | Recurring revenue, retention, bookings/RPO, gross margin, stock-based compensation and free cash flow | Oct 2026 |
What should I look at in any quarterly earnings report?
Start with the operating story rather than the last line of the income statement. The SEC’s disclosure principle is that a company should give investors a narrative that lets them see the business “through the eyes of management.” That requires a definition for each important metric, its connection to how management runs the company and an explanation of why the measure matters. Because useful KPIs vary by industry and issuer, a ratio without its denominator, period, segment scope or definition can mislead.
1. Growth and demand
Read revenue year over year and sequentially, then build the bridge to the reported number. Separate volume, price, product or customer mix, currency, acquisitions, divestitures and one-time items. Year-over-year growth exposes the underlying annual trend; sequential growth can reveal acceleration or a seasonal slowdown, but only after you understand the company’s normal seasonal pattern.
2. Profitability and margin quality
Use the margins that fit the business: gross margin, operating margin, net income, earnings per share, return on assets, return on equity and segment profit. Ask what moved the margin. Durable productivity or pricing is different from a catastrophe comparison, reserve release, investment gain, restructuring benefit, acquisition accounting effect or temporary cost cut. Adjusted figures are useful only when the issuer defines them and reconciles them with GAAP results.

3. Cash generation and balance-sheet capacity
Compare operating cash flow and free cash flow with earnings. Explain working-capital movements and capital expenditure rather than treating cash as an afterthought. Review debt, liquidity and net leverage. For banks and insurers, capital and liquidity determine how much risk can be carried and how much cash can be returned, so they belong beside the income statement.
4. Forward visibility
Look for the leading indicator that matches the business: loan pipelines and deposits, renewal and pricing trends, orders and backlog, or bookings, remaining performance obligations, recurring revenue and retention. Guidance is more credible when those indicators support it. Management commentary should explain what changed in demand, pricing, capacity or risk—not merely repeat the forecast range.
5. Earnings quality and one-offs
Classify each material contribution as ordinary operations, market movement, reserve development, catastrophe, restructuring, tax, acquisition, foreign-exchange or accounting change. Reconcile reported, adjusted, underlying, accident-year and constant-currency measures. If an issuer changes a KPI’s calculation or presentation, it should explain the difference, the reason, the effect on prior periods and other implications; otherwise a trend line may be false.

For a bank, the priority is the relationship between earning assets, funding costs, credit losses, fee income and regulatory capital. A higher EPS or ROE is useful only if it is not being produced by rising leverage, weaker underwriting standards or a shrinking liquidity buffer.
Net interest income and net interest margin
Net interest income (NII) is the dollar contribution from lending and funding. Net interest margin (NIM) relates NII to average earning assets; the Federal Reserve defines it as net interest income divided by average earning assets. Read both the level and the bridge: asset yields, deposit pricing, funding mix, average balances and hedging can move NIM in different directions. A flat NII with growing balances may indicate pressure on spreads, while a higher NII driven solely by rates may fade when rates change.
Loans, deposits and funding
Track average and period-end loans and deposits, their mix and growth, deposit pricing and the loan-to-deposit relationship. Determine whether loan growth is funded by stable core deposits or by more expensive wholesale sources. Commercial, consumer, credit-card and real-estate portfolios have different yields and loss behavior, so aggregate growth can hide a material shift in risk.
Credit quality and reserves
Follow provision expense, net charge-offs, delinquencies, nonperforming loans, criticized or classified assets when disclosed, reserve coverage and the direction of credit-loss reserves. Provisions and migration into weaker risk categories often signal future earnings pressure before charge-offs fully appear. Compare reserve changes with portfolio growth, borrower stress and management’s economic assumptions.

Fee and markets income
Separate recurring payments, card, wealth-management and servicing fees from advisory, capital-markets and trading gains. The Federal Reserve’s first-quarter 2026 discussion illustrates why mix matters: noninterest-income growth can lift ROE even while NII is flat. Volatile market income deserves a different durability assessment from customer-linked fees.
Profitability, capital and liquidity
Use ROA, ROE, efficiency or expense ratios and pre-provision net revenue where disclosed. Then review CET1, tangible common equity, leverage, liquidity buffers, unrealized securities losses and distributions. The Federal Reserve reported an aggregate 12% CET1 ratio for large banks at the end of the first quarter of 2026 and noted that distributions and risk-weighted-asset growth can reduce the ratio even when earnings are positive.
Published sector figures provide scale, not a universal pass mark. The FDIC reported 1.26% ROA and $80.5 billion of aggregate net income for banks in 2026. The Federal Reserve reported about 1.1% ROAA and 11.2% ROE at the end of 2025, while its first-quarter 2026 large-bank sample showed 14% aggregate ROE and 12% CET1. These figures cover different populations and periods, so compare an issuer with its own history and peer definitions.
What is a good combined ratio and what else should I check for an insurer?
The combined ratio is the central underwriting-health measure: loss ratio plus expense ratio. A ratio below 100% generally indicates underwriting profit before investment income, but the conclusion depends on whether the figure is GAAP, underlying, accident-year, catastrophe-adjusted or otherwise normalized. Never compare unlike versions as though they were identical.

Premium growth and retention
Read gross written premium, net written premium and net earned premium by segment and geography. Written premium records business placed; earned premium recognizes coverage over time, so the two can diverge sharply during rapid growth or contraction. Decompose changes into rate, exposure, renewal retention, new business, reinsurance, currency and acquisitions.
Losses, expenses and catastrophes
Inspect the loss ratio, expense ratio and combined-ratio bridge. Separate current-year loss trends from catastrophe losses and prior-year reserve development. A favorable reserve release can improve a quarter without representing new-period underwriting progress; adverse development can depress reported profit even when current pricing is healthy. State whether catastrophe adjustments are included.
Underwriting, investment income and book value
Insurers earn from underwriting and from investing premiums before claims are paid. Review underwriting income beside investment income, investment yield, asset duration and realized or unrealized gains, including sensitivity to interest rates. Follow book value per share, adjusted book value when the issuer uses it, ROE and operating ROE, and explain the effect of accumulated other comprehensive income or unrealized investment gains and losses.

Capital, reinsurance and liquidity
Check risk-based capital or equivalent solvency measures, debt-to-capital, liquidity, reinsurance recoverables and cash-flow stress. Federal Reserve insurance-supervision guidance says liquidity measures should be tailored to the type of insurance business and supported by granular cash-flow forecasting and an own-risk-and-solvency assessment (ORSA).
As a current illustration, American International Group reported 9% year-over-year net-premiums-written growth, $686 million of general-insurance underwriting income and an 89.0% combined ratio in 2026. Its second-quarter 2026 ROE was 9.4% and core operating ROE was 11.1%. Those are issuer-specific figures; the ratio basis, catastrophe treatment and business mix must be checked before using them as comparisons.
How do I compare a manufacturer’s quarterly results?
Manufacturing analysis works best when the income statement is tied to physical activity: units, realized prices, factory utilization, orders, inventory and cash. Revenue growth by itself cannot tell you whether demand improved or prices merely rose.
Build an organic volume-price-mix bridge
Separate unit volume, realized price and product mix from currency, acquisitions and divestitures. A favorable mix can lift revenue and margin while total units fall; price increases can mask weaker demand. Segment-level disclosure is more informative than a company-wide average.
Read orders, backlog and book-to-bill carefully
Use orders, backlog and book-to-bill where disclosed, but establish whether backlog is cancellable, how long it takes to convert and whether a few customers or programs dominate it. A large backlog with weak order intake may represent old commitments rather than fresh demand. Book-to-bill above one is not automatically positive if cancellations, delivery timing or margin are deteriorating.
Explain segment margin and factory execution
Compare operating margin by segment and identify the effects of raw materials, labor, freight, warranty, launch costs, utilization, pricing, productivity and mix. Track production, shipments, yield, downtime, capacity utilization, labor availability and supply-chain constraints when management discloses them. Underutilized plants can create operating deleverage even when selling prices hold.
Check inventory, working capital and cash
Compare inventory growth with sales growth and review days inventory outstanding, receivables, payables and cash conversion. Inventory accumulation may support a planned launch or may signal weak orders and future markdowns. Compare maintenance and growth capex with operating cash flow, free cash flow, debt reduction and shareholder returns; a high-margin quarter that consumes unusual working capital is less durable than its profit suggests.

Which technology KPIs matter besides revenue and EPS?
Technology results need a revenue-quality and customer-economics analysis. Separate durable recurring demand from usage spikes, hardware timing, services, advertising, licensing or acquisition effects, then test whether margins and cash support the growth.
Revenue mix and recurring visibility
Break out subscription, usage, license, hardware, services, advertising and acquisition-driven revenue where disclosed. Annualized recurring revenue, remaining performance obligations, deferred revenue, billings, bookings and renewal rates can indicate future visibility, but use only the issuer’s stated definitions and calculation periods. A reported recurring-revenue figure may be annualized rather than recognized revenue, so do not add it directly to the income statement.
Customer retention and usage
Track customer additions, gross retention, net retention, churn, average revenue per user, seats, workloads, active usage or transaction volume as appropriate. The SEC identifies customers, subscribers, average revenue per user, active usage and net customer additions as potentially material operating metrics. Net retention above 100% can indicate existing customers are expanding, but it does not replace new-customer growth or cash analysis.
Margins, investment and stock-based compensation
Follow gross and operating margin alongside research and development, sales and marketing, infrastructure costs and stock-based compensation. Distinguish GAAP performance from adjusted figures that exclude recurring compensation or other ongoing costs. For cloud- or AI-intensive businesses, identify whether infrastructure spending is supporting contracted demand, capacity ahead of launches or consumption that has not yet been monetized.
Cash generation and product-cycle evidence
Use operating cash flow, free cash flow, capex, capitalized software and deferred-revenue changes to test cash conversion. Compare guidance with actual growth, bookings, retention, usage, launches and competitive commentary. A forecast becomes more credible when customer behavior and contracted commitments move in the same direction as management’s outlook.
How can I compare these four sectors without false equivalence?
Use the same questions but not the same ratios. The comparison should be directional because definitions, accounting, regulation and balance-sheet mechanics differ.

What is a practical process for reading the quarter?
- Read the headline release and filing together. Capture reported revenue, operating profit, EPS, cash flow and the exact period and scope.
- Build the growth bridge. Label volume, price, mix, currency, acquisitions, divestitures and one-time effects.
- Reconcile profitability. Tie adjusted or underlying numbers to GAAP and identify every material exclusion.
- Check cash conversion. Explain working capital, capex, operating cash flow, free cash flow, debt and liquidity.
- Apply the sector screen. Use credit and capital for banks; combined-ratio components and reserves for insurers; orders, inventory and utilization for manufacturers; recurring revenue, retention and stock-based compensation for technology companies.
- Test the outlook. Compare guidance with leading indicators and management’s assumptions, not just with the prior quarter.
- Review definitions and changes. Record denominator, geography, segment, currency basis and any KPI reclassification so the next quarter remains comparable.
- Write the verdict. State whether operations, cash, balance-sheet capacity, forward indicators and risk point in the same direction. If they conflict, identify the conflict instead of forcing a single score.
How should I handle adjusted and non-GAAP metrics?
Use an adjusted measure as a supplement, never as a replacement for reported results. The issuer should explain the reconciliation and why the adjustment helps investors understand recurring performance. Costs that recur—such as compensation, infrastructure or restructuring that appears every quarter—deserve scrutiny even when management excludes them.

What should I record for the next quarter?
Create a small time series for each material KPI with its definition, denominator, period and segment scope. Note management’s stated drivers and the leading indicators that would confirm or challenge them. This prevents a changed definition, seasonal comparison or one-time gain from being mistaken for an operating trend.
FAQ
Should I compare quarter-end balances or average balances?
Use averages for measures generated throughout the period, such as a bank’s NIM or average loan yield, because a quarter-end balance may reflect a last-day surge. Use period-end balances for capital, liquidity and other point-in-time constraints, and label the choice explicitly.
Why can written premium rise while an insurer’s earned premium does not?
Written premium is recorded when coverage is placed, while earned premium is recognized as the coverage period elapses. Rapid growth, short-term policies, cancellations or a change in reinsurance can therefore create a timing gap between the two measures.
