Qualcomm’s March 2026 Wi-Fi 8 announcement covers two different kinds of networking hardware: FastConnect 8800, a mobile connectivity system for devices, and five Dragonwing platforms for networking equipment such as access points and gateways. Separately, Qualcomm says it is targeting the first 6G standards and commercial adoption around 2029/2030. That is an early-deployment roadmap, not a promise of 6G coverage for consumers everywhere in 2029.

What Qualcomm announced

On March 2, 2026, Qualcomm introduced a Wi-Fi 8 portfolio spanning client devices and network infrastructure. The announcement framed the technology for future AI-era connectivity, but that is Qualcomm’s positioning—not evidence that AI applications require Wi-Fi 8. Qualcomm’s announcement describes the portfolio.

FastConnect 8800 is for mobile devices

FastConnect 8800 is a single-chip mobile connectivity system built on a 6 nm process. Qualcomm says its 4×4 radio combines Wi-Fi 8 with Bluetooth High Data Throughput (HDT), Ultra Wideband, and Thread. It supports Wi-Fi 8 and earlier Wi-Fi generations. It is a component intended for incorporation into devices, not a standalone router for consumers to buy.

Dragonwing is for networking equipment

Qualcomm also announced five Dragonwing infrastructure platforms for products such as access points and gateways. These are distinct from FastConnect 8800: one is mobile-device connectivity silicon, while the other platforms target the equipment that provides network access.

What FastConnect 8800’s speed and range figures mean

Qualcomm lists an 11.6 Gbps peak rate for FastConnect 8800. This is a maximum physical-layer (PHY) rate, not the application download speed a person should expect in everyday use. Actual throughput depends on the connected device, network configuration, signal conditions, and other factors. The FastConnect 8800 product page gives Qualcomm’s specifications and qualifications.

Qualcomm also says the system can deliver double the peak speeds of the previous generation and up to three times the gigabit range. The range comparison is based on Qualcomm’s stated conditions: a 4×4 system, 320 MHz, RF front-end modules, Wi-Fi 8 Extended Long Range features, and internal iperf testing at 1 Gbps against the previous generation. Those are company claims under specified test conditions, not independent results or a guarantee of a threefold improvement in a household.

Bluetooth HDT is still subject to change

Qualcomm describes HDT as based on a working draft of a potential Bluetooth specification, which may change. Its product page lists Bluetooth 6.3 alongside HDT; the chip should not be casually described as “Bluetooth 7.” Qualcomm’s March blog said the draft could raise a stated ceiling from 2 Mbps to 7.5 Mbps, but that figure is also tied to the draft proposal rather than a settled, guaranteed capability.

Wi-Fi 8: standards status and announced consumer gear

Wi-Fi 8 is associated with IEEE 802.11bn, which remained in development in standards coverage published in June 2026. Wi-Fi NOW reported that final IEEE approval was expected in May 2028 and Wi-Fi Alliance certification was expected at CES 2028. Those were schedule expectations reported on June 16, 2026—not completed milestones. Silicon and early devices can arrive before formal certification.

There is already a named consumer product context. On September 1, 2026, TP-Link announced the Archer 8 Ultra BN19000 (Archer BN800) router and Deco 8 Ultra BN22000 (Deco BN85) mesh system. The manufacturer’s announced figures are:

Product Design Manufacturer-advertised figures
Archer 8 Ultra BN19000 (Archer BN800) Tri-band router Up to 19 Gbps aggregate wireless speed
Deco 8 Ultra BN22000 (Deco BN85) Tri-band mesh system Up to 22 Gbps aggregate wireless speed; for a three-pack, up to 9,800 sq. ft. and more than 200 connected devices

These are TP-Link’s claims, not independent test results. Aggregate multi-band rates combine capacity across bands; they are not the expected speed of one client device. The coverage and device-count figures for the Deco three-pack can vary with a home’s layout, construction, configuration, and wireless environment. TP-Link says the lineup uses chipsets from Broadcom, Qualcomm, and MediaTek, but its announcement does not identify which chipset is used in each model. Model names, specifications, and availability can also vary by market. See TP-Link’s lineup announcement for its announced details.

Features TP-Link says are designed to help

TP-Link describes Enhanced Long Range and Distributed Resource Units as features intended to improve edge coverage and uplink performance. It says Non-Primary Channel Access is designed to improve responsiveness with more connected devices, while Unequal Modulation and newer modulation and coding schemes aim to improve throughput consistency under interference. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of design goals, not independently demonstrated results.

For a Wi-Fi 8 router shopper, the Archer 8 Ultra is a concrete announced example; the Deco system is the mesh alternative for people considering broader home coverage. Check regional availability and final specifications before buying. The product announcement alone does not establish live stock or identical specifications in every market.

What “6G rollout by 2029” actually means

Qualcomm’s 6G roadmap discusses initial global, interoperable commercial systems beginning from 2029, while its current overview says first standards and commercial adoption are expected in 2029/2030. Read the date as a target for the beginning of initial systems, not the year when ordinary consumers everywhere will have 6G service.

Standards development and spectrum decisions still form part of the path. Qualcomm describes a 3GPP process with a Study Item phase in Release 20 followed by a Work Item phase in Release 21, and says regulators and the mobile ecosystem are identifying potential spectrum bands at country, regional, and global levels. Its 6G vision includes AI, sensing, digital twinning, and other capabilities, but those are roadmap concepts rather than a guarantee that every feature will appear in early networks. The company’s 6G overview sets out its current expectations; 9to5Google’s March 2026 coverage likewise describes a broader buildout following initial rollout.

Keep the two timelines separate

Wi-Fi 8 is a local wireless networking technology, with mobile-device silicon and home networking products already announced ahead of expected standards approval and certification. 6G is a separate cellular-network roadmap whose initial systems are targeted around 2029/2030. A Wi-Fi 8 chip announcement does not mean 6G service is arriving alongside it, and neither timeline establishes widespread consumer availability on a specific date.
