There is no public, comparable return-rate data in the reporting behind this dispute. In December 2024, Intel executive Michelle Johnston Holthaus said retailers were concerned about returns of Arm PCs; Qualcomm replied that returns of its Snapdragon PCs were within industry norms. Neither statement came with percentages, named retailers or a disclosed methodology, so the claims do not establish whether Snapdragon laptops are returned more often.
What Intel said about Arm PC returns
HotHardware’s December 17, 2024 report attributed the remark to Intel executive Michelle Johnston Holthaus, citing CRN. She said retailers’ “number one concern” was that a “large percentage” of Arm PCs came back because expected features did not work during setup. The report did not identify those retailers or quantify the alleged returns.
The allegation was about Arm PCs broadly. HotHardware discussed it in the context of the first Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus Copilot+ PCs, but the quote itself does not say that every returned device was a Snapdragon model or a Copilot+ PC. HotHardware’s report relays the remarks and attributes them to CRN; the original CRN page was not established in the source set.
How Qualcomm responded—and what it did not prove
Qualcomm disputed the implication that its Snapdragon PC returns were unusually high, saying its device return rates were “within industry norm.” The company also cited consumer-review ratings above four stars and industry awards. Those are Qualcomm’s statements, not independently verified return-rate evidence; reviews and awards cannot establish how many customers returned a device.

Neither side supplied a rate, a comparison period, retailer-level data or a method for calculating returns in the reported exchange. On the public evidence described by HotHardware, there is no apples-to-apples basis for deciding whether Snapdragon PCs are returned more often than Intel PCs or other laptops.
Why Copilot+ PC does not mean Snapdragon-only
Copilot+ PC is a Windows 11 device category, not a synonym for Snapdragon. Microsoft’s developer guidance describes systems with an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS) and identifies both Qualcomm Snapdragon and Intel processor systems. Microsoft’s NPU device guidance therefore places the category across processor platforms.

In a June 5, 2024 explainer, Qualcomm described Microsoft’s criteria as including a 40-TOPS NPU, 16 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage. Those figures are Qualcomm’s account of the requirements at that time, not a substitute for checking Microsoft’s current criteria or a particular laptop’s configuration. Qualcomm’s Copilot+ PC explainer is vendor-authored.
Other claims in the exchange are not return-rate evidence
HotHardware also reported Qualcomm’s forecast that 30–50% of laptops might move to non-x86 platforms within five years. That was a Qualcomm forecast reported in 2024, not an observed market result or an independent projection.

Holthaus argued that Intel’s Core Ultra 200V “Lunar Lake” processors had narrowed efficiency differences while Intel retained performance and compatibility advantages. That, too, is an attributed competitive claim—not a comparative test result and not evidence about return rates.
