Yes—if your priority is a very light, aggressive shoe for 5K and 10K racing or hard speedwork, the PUMA Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2 is purpose-built for that job. It combines PUMA’s NITROFOAM Elite midsole with a carbon-fibre PWRPLATE, an 8 mm drop and unusually low weight. Running Warehouse reviewers described it as “ultra lightweight,” “snappy and energetic,” and “FAST” during all-out workouts.

The compromises are equally important: cushioning is rated low, the platform is aimed at short distances rather than all-day mileage, and one independent review found the shoe slightly long with less foam than some forefoot strikers may want under the toes. Published weights range from 111 g to 130 g depending on source and gender sample. At roughly $200 in US references, €200 in Ireland or ₹19,999 including GST in India, it is a specialist racing purchase rather than an inexpensive daily trainer.

Is the PUMA Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2 good for 5K and 10K racing?

It is specifically intended for short road races and high-speed sessions, making 5K and 10K the clearest fit. PUMA describes the shoe as built for short distances, while Running Warehouse’s direct-use review identifies speedwork and 5K/10K racing as its strongest use cases. The low-cushioning design favors a quick, connected ride over the protective feel associated with long-distance trainers.

Why it suits short races

  • The carbon-fibre PWRPLATE is designed to improve responsiveness, energy transfer and forward propulsion.
  • NITROFOAM Elite supplies the lightweight performance midsole used in PUMA’s racing proposition.
  • The reported weights are low enough to appeal to runners who notice every gram during fast running.
  • An 8 mm heel-to-toe drop provides a moderate geometry rather than an extreme zero-drop or high-drop setup.

Where its design is less versatile

Neither PUMA’s positioning nor the available independent review presents this as a cushioned marathon shoe or an all-purpose daily trainer. A runner who wants substantial forefoot protection, a forgiving recovery ride or one shoe for every distance may find the Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2 too specialized. Those conclusions follow from its stated low cushioning and short-distance remit, not from a controlled comparison against other models.

How does the NITRO Elite 2’s ride and plate work?

The midsole uses NITROFOAM Elite, and a carbon-fibre PWRPLATE sits within the platform. PUMA says the combination helps launch the runner forward with an ultra-responsive feel, while the plate is intended to improve energy transfer and propulsion. In practical terms, the design targets a fast transition and a firm, lively response when you increase pace.

PUMA’s official product copy states: “The Fast-FWD NITRO™ Elite 2 Running Shoes help you launch forward with ultra-responsive NITROFOAM™ Elite and a carbon-fibre PWRPLATE. Built for short-distances, they help you push the pace all race long.” That is a manufacturer description, so it should be read as the design intent rather than an independently measured energy-return result.

What the direct-use review found

Running Warehouse testers used the shoe in all-out speed workouts and called it “ultra lightweight,” “snappy and energetic,” and “FAST.” Those are reviewer impressions from the tested sample, not a guarantee that every runner will experience the same response. Run Rotation’s listing is useful for specifications but explicitly says it did not wear-test the shoe.

How much does the shoe weigh?

Published weights vary slightly because the sources use different samples and reporting conventions. Running Warehouse reports 130 g for the men’s version and 111 g for the women’s version. Run Rotation reports 125 g, and Nerd Runner lists 4.6 oz for men’s and 3.9 oz for women’s shoes. Treat those numbers as source-specific references rather than a promise that every size will weigh exactly the same.

Source Weight reported Sample or unit
Running Warehouse 130 g Men’s review sample
Running Warehouse 111 g Women’s review sample
Run Rotation 125 g Listing weight; sample details not expanded
Nerd Runner 4.6 oz Men’s listing
Nerd Runner 3.9 oz Women’s listing

At these weights, the model belongs to the stripped-down racing-flat end of the road-shoe spectrum. Lower mass can feel advantageous when accelerating repeatedly, but weight alone does not determine whether a shoe is comfortable or sustainable for your mechanics. The plate, low cushioning and fit should be considered together.

How does the Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2 fit?

PUMA classifies it as a regular-width, neutral shoe. Running Warehouse found the sizing slightly long and noted that some runners may want to go down half a size. That is a reviewer observation, not a universal sizing rule: foot shape, socks and personal toe-room preference can change the right choice.

A practical fitting process

  1. Start with your measured running-shoe size and compare it with the specific regional size chart available from the seller.
  2. Try the shoe late in the day or after a run when feet are at their largest, wearing the socks you race in.
  3. Check that your longest toe has a small amount of clearance without your heel lifting when you accelerate.
  4. Because the review found the shoe slightly long, test your usual size against a half-size-down option if both are available.
  5. Walk, jog and perform a few controlled accelerations before deciding; a race shoe should hold the foot securely without pressure across the forefoot.

What forefoot strikers should know

Running Warehouse cautions that forefoot strikers may want more foam under the toes. This does not mean the shoe is unsuitable for every forefoot runner; it means the low-cushioning forefoot is a meaningful fit and protection consideration. If you regularly prefer plush toe cushioning, compare the Fast-FWD’s feel with your current racing shoe before committing to a race-day purchase.

Is the cushioning enough for your running style?

PUMA labels the cushioning level low, and the 22 mm forefoot measurement reported by Running Warehouse and Nerd Runner helps explain why the shoe feels closer to a racing flat than a heavily cushioned super shoe. Runners who enjoy firm ground contact and short, fast efforts are the most obvious audience.

Consider your own tolerance for minimal protection. A lightweight runner with efficient mechanics may be comfortable in a low-cushioning race shoe, while a heavier runner, a runner returning from injury or someone accustomed to thick foam may need a gradual introduction. The available sources do not establish an injury rate or a universal distance limit, so avoid treating the shoe’s construction as medical advice.

What distances and workouts make the most sense?

The strongest evidence supports short road racing and speedwork. Use it for sessions where responsiveness and low weight matter, and reserve it for races in which you already know the low-cushioning platform agrees with your feet.

Good matches

  • 5K races where rapid turnover and a light shoe are priorities.
  • 10K races for runners who prefer a firm, direct platform.
  • Short intervals, repetitions and other all-out speed workouts.
  • Race-specific practice in which you want to rehearse the exact shoe and fit before competition.

Situations requiring caution

  • Long easy runs where the low cushioning may feel unnecessarily demanding.
  • Races longer than the model’s stated short-distance focus, unless you have already tested it comfortably at that duration.
  • Runs requiring a highly protective forefoot platform.
  • First-time use on race day; a plated shoe should be tested in training first.

How durable is it, and when should you replace it?

PUMA gives an average-distance figure of 800 km. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independently verified service-life test, and actual durability depends on body weight, stride, surfaces, weather, rotation with other shoes and how aggressively the shoe is used.

Track the shoe’s mileage and inspect it regularly rather than waiting for the published number. Look for visible outsole wear, compressed or uneven foam, a change in plate-driven responsiveness, upper separation or new discomfort. A shoe can remain intact beyond a nominal mileage figure yet no longer deliver the ride you bought it for; another runner may wear it faster.

How much does the Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2 cost?

Prices are regional, colorway-specific and subject to change. The cited PUMA Ireland page lists €200, while PUMA India lists ₹19,999 including GST. Run Rotation gives a US reference price of $200, and Nerd Runner lists $199.95. These figures should be checked in your market at the time of purchase.

Run Rotation $200 US reference price
Nerd Runner $199.95 US listing price

At around $200, the buying decision rests on whether you specifically need a lightweight 5K/10K racer. If you want one shoe for commuting, easy mileage and racing, the Fast-FWD’s low cushioning and specialized geometry make the value proposition less straightforward than its headline specifications suggest.

What are the main advantages and drawbacks?

Advantages

  • Very low reported weight: independent listings place it around 111–130 g depending on gender sample and source.
  • Purposeful propulsion design: NITROFOAM Elite and a carbon-fibre PWRPLATE target responsiveness and energy transfer.
  • Clear race role: the short-distance focus makes it easy to understand as a 5K/10K and speedwork specialist.
  • Moderate 8 mm drop: familiar to runners who do not want an extreme geometry change.
  • Neutral, regular-width platform: straightforward for runners who normally use that category.

Drawbacks

  • Low cushioning: less protective than many shoes designed for long-distance comfort.
  • Potentially long fit: Running Warehouse says some runners may prefer half a size down.
  • Forefoot protection may be limited: forefoot strikers may want more foam under the toes.
  • High specialist price: regional references cluster around the equivalent of $200.
  • Limited independent evidence: no controlled laboratory energy-return test, long-term durability study or complete head-to-head comparison is available in the cited material.

How should you compare it with other racing shoes?

A meaningful comparison should begin with your race distance and tolerance for low cushioning, not with the presence of a carbon plate alone. Compare forefoot foam, plate stiffness or flexibility, fit length, traction, expected durability, weight and regional price under the same conditions.

The available evidence does not provide a controlled head-to-head test against named competitors, so claims that this shoe is faster, more durable or more comfortable than a particular rival would go beyond what has been established. Instead, use the Fast-FWD’s documented profile—regular width, neutral support, 8 mm drop, 30/22 mm stack and short-distance focus—as the baseline for your own comparison.

What is proven, and what remains uncertain?

PUMA’s product pages establish the intended use, foam and plate technologies, geometry, material percentages, regional prices and the 800 km average-distance guidance. Running Warehouse adds direct-use impressions from speed workouts, the slightly-long sizing observation and the forefoot-foam caution. Run Rotation and Nerd Runner add independent weight and stack references, with Run Rotation explicitly noting that it did not wear-test the model.

No cited source supplies a laboratory measurement of energy return, a statistically controlled race-time benefit, a long-term outsole study or a verified universal fit. The most defensible verdict is therefore specific: this is a lightweight, carbon-plated short-distance racer whose design and one independent review point toward fast 5K/10K work, with fit and forefoot cushioning requiring personal testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a beginner runner use the PUMA Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2?

A beginner can try it, but the shoe’s low cushioning and aggressive racing purpose make it a poor choice for learning basic mileage if you have not used lightweight plated shoes before. Start with short, easy sessions and stop if the forefoot, calves or arches develop persistent discomfort.

Is the Fast-FWD NITRO Elite 2 suitable for a marathon?

The documented positioning is short-distance racing and speedwork, not marathon racing. A marathoner would need to validate comfort, protection and fit over the intended duration personally because the available sources do not establish a marathon-distance performance case.

Does the carbon plate make the shoe illegal for racing?

The cited material identifies a carbon-fibre PWRPLATE but does not analyze competition regulations or approval lists. Check the rules of your governing body and the specific event before relying on any plated shoe in sanctioned competition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether the shoe is worn out before 800 km?

Use the 800 km figure only as PUMA’s average guidance. Replace the shoe sooner if the outsole is heavily worn, the foam feels uneven or flat, the upper no longer holds your foot, or the ride and comfort have clearly changed.
