There is no universal winner. Choose Cloudflare if you want a mainstream resolver with optional malware or adult-content filtering, Quad9 if blocking known threat domains is your priority, or Google Public DNS if you want broad deployment, encrypted DNS, and generally no content filtering. Speed depends on your location, ISP routing, cache state, and current network conditions, so test the candidates from the connection where you will use them.

What does a public DNS provider do?

Domain Name System (DNS) translates a name such as example.com into the IP address a device needs to connect. Your broadband provider, mobile carrier, company, or router normally supplies a resolver automatically. A public resolver is an alternative operated for anyone to use by entering its addresses in a device, operating system, browser, or router.

The resolver you select can affect whether a known malicious domain is blocked, whether adult sites are filtered, how DNS queries travel across the network, and how quickly a name resolves on your particular connection. It does not replace a firewall, antivirus software, parental controls, or a VPN. DNS filtering acts when a domain lookup is made; it cannot inspect every URL path or determine whether a downloaded file is safe.

Which addresses and features does each provider offer?

Use the address pair that matches the policy you want. Where a platform accepts primary and secondary DNS, enter two addresses from the same service and policy so a fallback does not silently change the filtering rules.

Which DNS provider blocks malware or adult content?

Cloudflare is the only option in this comparison with a selectable adult-content policy. Its standard pair is unfiltered, the .2 pair adds malware blocking, and the .3 pair adds adult-content blocking to malware protection.

Choose Cloudflare’s policy deliberately

Use 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 when you want ordinary resolution without the provider’s optional category blocks. Use 1.1.1.2 and 1.0.0.2 for a malware-blocking profile. Use 1.1.1.3 and 1.0.0.3 when the network should also block adult-content domains. These are different resolver services, not merely alternate addresses for the same behavior.

What Quad9 blocks

Quad9’s 9.9.9.9 and 149.112.112.112 service is described as threat-blocking and privacy-first. It is intended to stop lookups for domains associated with threats, rather than to provide a general adult-content filter. The 9.9.9.10 and 149.112.112.10 pair is published without threat blocking, which can help when you need Quad9 resolution without that policy.

What Google normally does not block

Google Public DNS generally avoids content filtering. Its documentation allows for limited security or legal cases, so “no filtering” should be read as a general policy rather than an absolute promise that every questionable domain will resolve.

What is the difference between DoH and DoT?

Traditional DNS can be read by parties that can observe the network path. DNS over TLS (DoT) wraps DNS in TLS and normally uses port 853. DNS over HTTPS (DoH) carries DNS requests and replies inside HTTPS, normally on port 443. Cloudflare, Google, and Quad9 all document support for both transports, although each provider uses its own endpoint names and configuration details.

DNS over TLS

DoT gives DNS its own encrypted connection. A router or operating system that supports DoT asks for the provider’s TLS hostname and then sends queries through the encrypted channel. Port 853 may be easier for a network administrator to identify or restrict than ordinary web traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DNS over HTTPS

DoH encrypts DNS queries by sending them as HTTPS requests. Because it uses port 443, it can share the transport used by normal secure web traffic. A browser may offer its own DoH setting, which can override the DNS configured in the operating system; check both layers when troubleshooting.

What encryption does not hide

Encryption protects the DNS request and reply while they travel to the resolver. It does not make the rest of your connection anonymous: the sites you contact still receive your traffic, and an observer may infer destinations from other metadata. Read each provider’s current privacy documentation rather than assuming that support for DoH or DoT means identical data-retention practices.

Which public DNS is fastest?

The available documentation does not establish a universal speed winner among Cloudflare, Google, and Quad9. Resolution time varies with your physical location, the route your ISP takes to a resolver, whether the requested name is already cached, congestion, and the condition of your local network.

Measure from the network that matters

Test from the home, office, or mobile connection where the resolver will run. A result from a different city or ISP can rank the providers differently. Compare several ordinary domains at different times, because one cached lookup or a temporary routing change is not a reliable verdict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record your current resolver and note whether the test is over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular data.
  2. Query the same set of domains against each candidate, using a DNS diagnostic utility such as nslookup or dig. Repeat each query after clearing or allowing for local cache effects.
  3. Compare the median response time, not just the single fastest result. Include a period of normal use so you notice intermittent timeouts.
  4. After selecting a service, test ordinary sites and any work, school, banking, gaming, or streaming domains that are important to you.

A small latency difference may be less important than reliable responses or a filtering policy that prevents a domain you need. If encrypted DNS is enabled, test that exact DoH or DoT configuration; an unencrypted test does not measure the complete path.

How should I choose between Cloudflare, Google, and Quad9?

Start with the behavior you need, then verify performance and compatibility locally.

If your priority is… Best starting choice Why Check before finalizing
Malware blocking with an optional family policy Cloudflare Separate address pairs provide standard, malware-blocking, and malware-plus-adult-content profiles. Confirm that required sites are not incorrectly categorized.
Threat-domain blocking as the deciding feature Quad9 secure service 9.9.9.9 and 149.112.112.112 are the documented threat-blocking pair. Check the provider’s current threat policy and endpoint instructions.
Broad deployment with generally no content filtering Google Public DNS It publishes familiar IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and documents DoH and DoT. Remember that limited security or legal exceptions can still apply.
No threat blocking on Quad9 Quad9 non-blocking service 9.9.9.10 and 149.112.112.10 are published without threat blocking. Decide whether omitting protection is acceptable for this network.

Do not combine a filtering primary resolver with an unfiltered secondary merely because both are popular. If the primary is unavailable, the device or router may use the secondary and produce a different answer for the same domain. Keep both addresses aligned with your intended policy.

How do I configure one of these DNS services?

The exact labels differ by router, operating system, browser, and firmware, but the sequence is consistent. Make a note of the original settings so you can restore them if the network has special requirements.

  1. Choose the service and policy. Select one address pair from the table. If your network uses IPv6, enter the IPv6 pair when the provider publishes one and your equipment supports it.
  2. Decide where to apply it. A router setting covers devices on that network. An operating-system setting affects one device. A browser’s secure-DNS setting may affect only browser lookups and can take precedence over the operating system.
  3. Open the DNS fields. In the selected device, operating-system, browser, or router network settings, locate the DNS or secure-DNS section. Change the mode from automatic to manual only if required by that interface.
  4. Enter primary and secondary addresses. Use two addresses from the same provider and policy. Avoid mixing Cloudflare’s malware pair with Google’s generally unfiltered pair unless you deliberately accept inconsistent fallback behavior.
  5. Configure encryption if supported. For DoH or DoT, enter the provider’s documented endpoint or TLS hostname exactly as published. An IP address alone may configure ordinary DNS but does not prove that encrypted transport is active.
  6. Save, reconnect, and test. Apply the change, disconnect and reconnect the network if necessary, then verify both name resolution and the expected blocking behavior.

On a managed workplace, school, or public network, local policy may force a particular resolver or block alternate ports. In that case, the setting can appear to save while queries continue to use the managed service.

How can I verify that the change worked?

Check the active resolver rather than relying on the value you typed into a form. Use the operating system’s network-status details or a DNS diagnostic command to identify the server answering requests. Then perform lookups for several unrelated domains and confirm that ordinary browsing still works.

  • Wrong resolver appears: another interface, VPN, browser, security product, or router may be supplying DNS. Disable competing overrides temporarily and test again.
  • Some domains fail: a filtering service may classify a legitimate domain as risky, or the domain may depend on a blocked third-party hostname. Temporarily test the provider’s unfiltered profile to isolate policy from connectivity.
  • Everything fails after saving: restore the previous automatic settings, confirm that each address was entered correctly, and retry with only the IPv4 pair before adding IPv6 or encrypted transport.
  • DoH or DoT will not connect: recheck the documented hostname, certificate-related settings, and whether the network permits HTTPS or port 853 traffic. A successful ordinary DNS lookup does not demonstrate that the encrypted mode is working.
  • Results change between devices: one device may use browser-level DoH while another uses router DNS. Inventory each layer before comparing behavior.

Do public DNS services improve privacy?

Encrypted transport prevents simple network-path inspection of DNS contents, which is useful on untrusted Wi-Fi and networks where ordinary DNS is visible. Privacy also depends on what the resolver records, how long it retains data, and how it handles operational or legal requests. The three providers’ marketing descriptions should not be treated as proof that their retention practices are equivalent.

Read the current privacy and service documentation for the exact product and endpoint you choose. A browser’s DoH provider, a router’s resolver, and a mobile application’s built-in resolver can all be different, so check the component that actually sends the query.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the practical trade-offs?

  • Filtering versus access: Blocking threats can stop malicious domains before a connection begins, but any category system can affect a legitimate site. Keep a documented way to switch profiles when diagnosing a false positive.
  • Consistency versus experimentation: A single policy across router and devices is easier to support. Per-browser testing is useful, but it can make two devices appear to have different internet problems.
  • Encryption versus compatibility: DoH and DoT protect DNS in transit, yet older routers, captive portals, and managed networks may not support them cleanly. Confirm ordinary connectivity before troubleshooting an encrypted mode.
  • Local speed versus global reputation: A provider known for a large network can still be slower from your ISP at a particular moment. Use local repeated measurements rather than a worldwide ranking.

What is the bottom line for most households?

For a household that wants malware protection and a selectable adult-content policy, start with Cloudflare’s appropriate filtered pair. For threat-domain blocking without an adult-content category, start with Quad9’s secure pair. For a broadly deployed resolver that generally leaves content unfiltered, start with Google’s addresses. In every case, configure matching primary and secondary addresses, use the documented DoH or DoT endpoint if you need encrypted transport, and validate the result from your own network.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Cloudflare, Google, and Quad9 at the same time?

You can enter addresses from different providers on some devices, but doing so makes policy and troubleshooting unpredictable. A fallback may switch from threat blocking to an unfiltered answer, so use one provider and one policy for a consistent result.

Will encrypted DNS stop my internet provider from seeing which websites I visit?

It hides DNS queries from ordinary inspection on the path to the resolver. It does not conceal all traffic metadata or the connections made after a lookup, so it is not a complete anonymity system.

Why does a filtered resolver break a legitimate website?

Domain blocklists can occasionally classify a shared hosting, advertising, or support domain incorrectly. Test the same site with the provider’s unfiltered profile; if it works there, the difference is policy rather than a general network outage.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is EDNS Client Subnet, and should I use Quad9’s ECS addresses?

ECS can send a portion of the client’s network information to help a resolver choose geographically suitable answers. Use an ECS variant only when you understand that trade-off and Quad9’s current documentation says it fits your deployment; the supplied service descriptions do not assign the .11 and .12 addresses the same labels as the secure and non-blocking pairs.

Do I need to change DNS on every device?

Changing the router normally covers devices that obtain network settings from it, while a browser-level secure-DNS setting can override the router for that browser only. Managed devices, VPNs, and applications with their own resolver may still require separate configuration.
