Neither PS5 nor Xbox Series X|S has a documented overall win for account security or privacy. Both offer stronger sign-in options and controls for player interactions and family accounts. PS5 makes social privacy easy to start with four named profiles; Xbox offers extensive family settings and clearer documentation of required versus optional console data. Those are differences in controls and transparency—not proof that one platform suffers fewer account compromises or collects less personal information overall. This US-focused comparison covers published controls checked October 30, 2026; it is not a hands-on console test.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key controls | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | People who want a clear starting point for social privacy | Four privacy profiles; passkey or two-step verification; child privacy, communication, content, and spending controls | PlayStation 5 | Nov 2026 |
| Xbox Series X|S | Households using family controls or readers who want published detail on console data | Microsoft-account passkey or two-step verification; family privacy, contact, purchases, content, and screen-time controls; required and optional data categories | Xbox Series X and Series S | Nov 2026 |
The controls listed here address different layers: access to the account, what other players can see or do, family supervision, checkout, and data collection by the platform or game publishers. A setting in one layer does not automatically cover the others.
Which console has stronger account security and privacy controls?
There is no sourced basis for declaring one platform categorically stronger. Both document passkeys and two-step verification for account sign-in, as well as meaningful player-privacy and family controls. Which is more suitable depends on whether you value PS5’s named social-privacy presets, Xbox’s family-management options, or each company’s explanation of data collection.

Player privacy covers such things as profile visibility, online status, and contact from other players. Platform data policies concern information collected or shared by the company and connected publishers. A restrictive social profile is not a data-collection opt-out, and a data setting does not stop another person from using a weak or exposed account credential.

- For sign-in: Both companies describe passkeys and two-step verification options. The documentation does not establish that one ecosystem has fewer account compromises.
- For social settings: PS5 has four named profiles intended to make choosing a privacy starting point straightforward. Xbox documents privacy and online-safety customization, including family controls.
- For children: Both let parents manage important account and play settings. Xbox documents the starting privacy level for child accounts and limits who can change those settings.
- For platform data: Microsoft describes required and optional Xbox diagnostic data; Sony describes Limited Data and Full Data. These categories are not directly comparable quantities.
How do PS5 and Xbox protect account sign-in?
Both platforms offer account-level options beyond relying only on a password. PlayStation documents account passkeys and two-step verification using an authenticator app or SMS; Microsoft documents personal-account passkeys and two-step verification using security contact methods or an authenticator. These are documented options, not evidence that every user must or can enable all of them simultaneously.
PlayStation account security
On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Security to reach account-related security options. Sony’s two-step verification guide describes authenticator-app and SMS setup and instructs users to save backup codes. Keep those codes somewhere secure so they remain available if the usual verification route is unavailable. Sony also cautions against scanning QR codes sent by another person and recommends signing out after using someone else’s console.
PlayStation account passkeys are another sign-in option. Sony’s account security guidance covers its account-security best practices. Do not assume a passkey setting replaces every recovery precaution: the two-step verification instructions specifically call out backup codes.
Microsoft account security for Xbox
Xbox account access is tied to a Microsoft account, so distinguish its online sign-in security from local Xbox sign-in and purchase preferences. Microsoft documents a personal-account passkey and two-step verification using security contact methods or an authenticator. Its passkey instructions say a passkey may be saved to a phone or physical security key, including a FIDO2 key.
That Microsoft-account passkey is not the same thing as an Xbox console purchase passkey. The cited Microsoft account instructions do not establish that a USB security key directly authenticates on an Xbox console. Treat the account sign-in, console sign-in, and purchase controls as separate settings, and verify the relevant device’s current options before relying on them.

What to do if your usual sign-in method is unavailable
For PlayStation two-step verification, retain the backup codes Sony tells users to record during setup. The Xbox and Microsoft materials cited here describe authentication choices but do not establish one universal recovery procedure that applies to every account situation. Use the account provider’s current recovery flow rather than assuming a console purchase PIN, a physical key, or a local console setting can recover the online account.
Can you hide what you are playing on PS5?
PS5 privacy settings let you control whether other players can see information such as your online status and games, as well as how they can interact with you. Choose one of Sony’s four named profiles or customize individual settings at Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy.

- Social and Open
- Team Player
- Friend Focused
- Solo and Focused
Sony describes the Solo and Focused preset this way: “No player can see your profile information or invite you to chat, even if they are your friend.” That is a statement about the preset’s player-facing privacy behavior, not a promise that Sony or a game publisher stops processing service data.
Sony lists controls for real-name and profile-picture exposure, online status, games, friend requests, parties, and messages. If you want to change just one kind of visibility, use the individual settings rather than assuming a single profile label precisely matches your preference. Sony’s PS5 privacy settings guide explains the profiles and customizable controls.
Can strangers message a child on Xbox?
Xbox family settings let a parent manage a child’s privacy and contact options; Microsoft’s guidance says child privacy starts at its most restrictive level. A parent using the family-group feature is the person who can change a child’s Xbox privacy and online settings. That starting point does not make a child’s gamertag or every activity invisible.

The Xbox family hub points parents to the Xbox Family Settings app or Microsoft family management for child privacy, purchases, content, and screen time. Xbox family controls also cover contact and purchases. Review the child’s actual privacy and contact settings rather than relying on the default alone. Microsoft’s Xbox family hub describes the family-management options.
PlayStation family managers can manage child privacy, communication, content, and spending. They can also control which child privacy settings the child is allowed to change. On PS5, family management is under Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management. Sony’s parental controls and spending limits guide covers those controls.
For either console, parental controls are not a substitute for checking the child’s settings and account context. A child using a different account, a game with its own communication controls, or a service outside the console’s family settings may have separate privacy choices.
What do PS5 and Xbox collect, and can you turn it off?
Neither company’s published controls support a claim of zero data collection. Sony describes PS5 Limited Data and Full Data, and says some collection is necessary to provide services. Microsoft distinguishes required diagnostic and service data from optional diagnostics and says Xbox products and services continue to work as expected when optional data is off.
Those labels describe each company’s own categories; they do not provide an apples-to-apples measure of total personal information. Likewise, social privacy settings control player-facing visibility and interactions, not what the platform collects under its privacy policy.

Xbox’s documented console-data choices
Microsoft’s October 2025 Xbox data summary, which covers Series X and Series S, estimates that an average Xbox console generates approximately 8 MB of data per day. Microsoft says the exact volume varies by user. This is Microsoft’s estimate of data generated by an Xbox console—not an independent measurement, not a Sony figure, and not a direct estimate of personal data other players can see.
Microsoft’s published Xbox console-data instructions place optional diagnostic settings under Online safety & family > Privacy & online safety > Data collection. Menu wording can change, so confirm the current path on the console. Turning optional collection off does not mean required service or diagnostic data stops, and it does not mean a game publisher receives no data.
What game publishers may receive
Sony describes sharing with game publishers and other partners for stated purposes. Microsoft’s privacy statement describes categories of Xbox data available to network-connected game and app publishers. A console-level privacy or data setting is not necessarily an in-game privacy setting: review the game’s own account, communication, and data controls as well.
Microsoft also says buying a game at retail on disc can avoid the required diagnostic event associated with buying that game through the Xbox Store. That narrow example does not avoid all required Xbox data, and it is not a general privacy guarantee for disc-based play.

How do checkout protections work?
Checkout settings can prevent an unintended purchase, but the available controls do not necessarily stack with account passkeys. Xbox documents a console purchase-passkey requirement. Sony documents a checkout password setting and explicitly says Require Password at Checkout is incompatible with a PlayStation account configured with passkeys.

Before changing either account’s sign-in method, check the platform’s current purchase-protection instructions. Do not enable a PlayStation account passkey and assume the separate checkout-password requirement will remain available at the same time. On Xbox, a console purchase passkey concerns purchases on the console; it is distinct from a Microsoft-account passkey stored on a phone or physical FIDO2 key. Microsoft’s purchase-protection guidance explains preventing unauthorized Microsoft Store purchases.

Start with account access, then set the social and household boundaries that matter on the console. The paths below are the published routes in the cited US support guidance; wording can change with software updates.
On PS5
- Secure the online account: Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Security, then review the available account security options. If you set up two-step verification, follow Sony’s guide for an authenticator app or SMS and record the backup codes.
- Set player visibility and contact: Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy. Select one of the four profiles as a starting point or customize settings such as online status, games, friend requests, parties, and messages.
- Set child-account boundaries: Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management to manage child privacy, communication, content, and spending, including which privacy controls a child may change.
- Protect account access away from home: Avoid QR codes sent by other people for sign-in, and sign out after using someone else’s console.
On Xbox Series X|S
- Secure the Microsoft account: Review Microsoft-account sign-in security, including the documented passkey and two-step verification options. Do not treat an account passkey as the console’s purchase passkey.
- Review the console’s data collection: Use the published path Online safety & family > Privacy & online safety > Data collection to review optional diagnostic settings. Confirm the current wording on the console.
- Set a child’s privacy and contact rules: Use the Xbox Family Settings app or Microsoft family management through the Xbox family hub. A parent using the family-group feature controls changes to child Xbox privacy and online settings.
- Review purchase protection separately: Check the Xbox console purchase-passkey setting if you want a purchase requirement. It is distinct from Microsoft-account authentication.
How should you decide between the platforms?
Choose based on the specific control experience you want, not on an unsupported claim that one platform is universally safer or more private.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Prefer a simple social-privacy starting point? PS5’s four profiles offer named presets, with the option to customize individual settings afterward.
- Managing a child’s Xbox account? Xbox has family tools for privacy, contact, purchases, content, and screen time, with child privacy starting at its most restrictive level and parent-controlled changes.
- Focused on data transparency? Microsoft publishes required-versus-optional Xbox data guidance and a console data estimate. Sony describes its own Limited Data and Full Data approach. The categories and figures do not establish which platform collects less overall.
- Focused on account takeover prevention? Both document passkeys and two-step verification. Use the options available for the account and retain the recovery information the provider specifies.
- Need a purchase prompt? Confirm compatibility with the sign-in method you choose; PlayStation’s checkout-password option does not work with a PlayStation account configured with passkeys.
For a shared household, the practical choice may be the ecosystem whose family-management tools the parent will actually maintain. For an individual account, the more important step is to secure the online account and then separately review visibility, contact, data, and checkout settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off optional Xbox data stop all data collection?
No. Microsoft distinguishes optional diagnostics from required diagnostic and service data, and says optional-data choices do not prevent Xbox products and services from working as expected. The setting addresses a category of collection, not every data flow from the platform or connected games.
Is an Xbox passkey the same as a Microsoft account passkey?
No. A Microsoft-account passkey is an account sign-in credential that Microsoft says can be saved to a phone or physical security key. An Xbox console purchase passkey is a separate purchase-control setting; the cited Microsoft guidance does not establish that a USB security key signs in directly to an Xbox console.
Does a PS5 privacy profile stop Sony from collecting data?
No. The profiles govern what other players can see and how they can interact with you. Sony separately describes Limited Data and Full Data, with some collection needed to provide services.
Can I use a PlayStation passkey and require a checkout password too?
Sony says Require Password at Checkout is incompatible with a PlayStation account configured with passkeys. Check the current purchase-protection options before changing the account’s sign-in method.
