PlayStation 5 sold an estimated 32,831 units in Japan during Famitsu’s four-week period from August 31 through September 27, 2026. That was 10,979 fewer units than the previous month’s 43,810, a 25.1% decline calculated from Famitsu’s published totals. At the same point in each console’s life, however, PS5 still trailed PS4: VGChartz’s month-71 comparison puts PS5 at 7,749,760 Japanese units versus 8,923,755 for PS4, a PS4 advantage of 1,173,995 units.

The comparison needs two different measures. Famitsu’s September figure is a current Japanese retail estimate, while the lifecycle comparison matches PS5’s 71st month with PS4’s 71st month (December 2019), not with PS4 sales in September 2026.

Japanese retail period PS5-family units Change
August 31–September 27, 2026 (four weeks) 32,831 —
Previous month reported by Famitsu 43,810 September was down 10,979 units (25.1%)

The monthly decline describes short-term Japanese demand. It does not by itself show that PS5 is permanently losing momentum, because four-week retail totals can reflect calendar timing, promotions, inventory and the mix of models sold.

Is PS5 outselling PS4 at the same point in its lifecycle?

No. In the aligned month-71 comparison, PS4 remains ahead in Japan by 1,173,995 units.

Console Lifecycle point Japan cumulative units
PS5 Month 71 (September 2026) 7,749,760
PS4 Month 71 (December 2019) 8,923,755
Difference PS4 lead 1,173,995

This is a like-for-like timing comparison: September 2026 is PS5’s 71st month on the Japanese market, so the matched PS4 observation is its 71st month, December 2019. The PS4 total is not PS4’s sales during September 2026.

Did PS5 catch up to PS4 in Japan?

It had not caught up by the month-71 point reported by VGChartz. The same comparison records a 201,176-unit latest-month movement toward PS4 and a 504,704-unit PS4 advantage over the preceding 12 months.

What the gap measures mean

  • Latest-month movement: the month-71 comparison shifted 201,176 units in PS4’s favor.
  • Trailing 12 months: across the preceding year in the aligned series, PS4 held a 504,704-unit advantage.
  • Cumulative lead: after 71 months, PS4’s total was 1,173,995 units higher.

These figures describe the direction and size of the aligned sales gap; they do not predict when, or whether, PS5 will eliminate it.

How should the Japanese PS5 and PS4 figures be compared?

Use each dataset for the question it can answer rather than combining unlike totals.

Question Most relevant measure Why
How strong was demand recently? Famitsu’s four-week Japanese retail estimate It covers the current August 31–September 27, 2026 period.
Was PS5 faster at the same age? VGChartz’s aligned month-71 totals Both consoles are compared at the same month since launch.
Is the gap widening or narrowing? Latest-month and trailing-12-month gap changes They show direction as well as the cumulative difference.
How large are the platforms worldwide? Sony’s official sell-in totals Useful context, but different geography, channel and reporting dates.

There is no separate contemporaneous Japanese PS4 retail total for September 2026 in the available figures. Therefore, presenting 8,923,755 as “PS4 September 2026 sales” would be incorrect.

What do Sony’s worldwide figures add?

Sony Interactive Entertainment reported more than 95 million PS5 units worldwide as of June 30, 2026. Its official historical table reported more than 117 million PS4 units worldwide as of June 30, 2022.

Those are worldwide sell-in figures reported on different dates. Sell-in is not the same measurement as Famitsu’s Japanese retail estimate, and the dates do not line up, so these numbers provide broad scale rather than a direct Japan-versus-Japan result.

What does this mean for someone choosing a console?

For a current purchase, PS5 is the relevant platform: it is Sony’s current-generation hardware and includes the standard, Digital Edition and Pro models counted in Famitsu’s September estimate. PS4 is principally a historical benchmark or a used-market budget option, with availability and condition varying by seller.

  • Choose PS5 when you want current-generation releases, continuing hardware support and access to the present PlayStation ecosystem.
  • Consider a used PS4 only when lower upfront cost and its established library matter more than current-generation features; verify condition, included accessories and local availability.
  • Do not infer value solely from the lifecycle sales lead: PS4’s higher month-71 total is a market-history result, not a guarantee that a particular console is the better purchase today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dates does Japan’s September 2026 PS5 sales report cover?

Famitsu’s “September” figure covers August 31 through September 27, 2026, a four-week aggregation period. It is not a calendar-month total for September 1–30.

Does the 32,831 figure include the PS5 Pro?

Yes. Famitsu’s PS5-family total combines the standard PS5, PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro.

Why is PS4’s comparison point December 2019?

The comparison is aligned by time since launch. December 2019 was PS4’s 71st month, matching PS5’s 71st month in September 2026.

Are Sony’s worldwide PS5 and PS4 totals directly comparable with Japan’s numbers?

No. Sony’s figures are worldwide sell-in totals reported on different dates, while Famitsu estimates Japanese domestic retail sales over four weeks. They are context, not a direct market comparison.
