To control PS5 voice-chat privacy, adjust three separate layers: account privacy decides who may contact you, party settings decide who can enter the voice room, and microphone controls decide whether your voice is actually transmitted. A fourth layer controls what other people can identify or record: your Online ID, real name, speaker-name overlays, broadcasts and clips. No single “mute” switch handles all of these.
On a PS5 or PS5 Pro, start at Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy, use a Closed Party for invite-only conversations, and set Microphone Status When Logged In to Mute if you do not want the DualSense microphone live after startup. Then review Voice Chat Settings, blocking, and real-name visibility separately.
What controls who can hear me on PS5?
Who can hear you depends on where the audio is going. PlayStation party chat, in-game voice chat, Discord, and a stream or clip have different controls. Account privacy and party membership limit access to the room; the microphone mute state determines whether sound leaves your console.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Account privacy: controls who can invite, message, or interact with you through parties, games and messages.
- Party type: controls who can enter that particular voice room.
- Microphone state: controls whether the DualSense, headset, or USB microphone sends your voice.
- Game-chat setting: controls game voice chat only, not PlayStation party chat or Discord.
- Identity settings: control real name, profile picture, activity and other profile information; your Online ID remains visible to people already in the party.
- Broadcast permissions: control whether your voice can be included in another player’s broadcast or clip.
Party voice chat supports a maximum of 16 players (Sony PlayStation Support, 2026). That limit makes membership and speaker identification especially important in a full room.

How do I change PS5 privacy settings for voice chat?
Use the console’s account-privacy page to decide who may start communication with you. These settings are tied to your PlayStation Network account and follow you to other devices.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy.
- Select Adjust Privacy Settings by Choosing a Profile for a preset, or choose View and Customize Your Privacy Settings for individual rules.
- For the specific party permission, open Communication and multiplayer > Who can interact with you through parties, games, and messages.
- Review Personal Info | Messaging to choose who can see your real name and communicate with you.
- Check Your real name and profile picture, Your information, and Your activity if you also want to limit profile, friend-list, online-status, gaming-history or game-visibility information.
The same account controls can be edited through Account Management on PlayStation.com and in the PlayStation App by opening your avatar and selecting Privacy. Sony states that a privacy change is reflected on all devices.
What do the four PS5 privacy profiles mean?
| Preset | Practical effect on voice-chat privacy |
|---|---|
| Social and Open | Anyone can see your profile information and send requests and messages. Sony describes it as being open to all requests and messages. |
| Team Player | Most profile information is visible; chat invitations require at least a friends-of-friends relationship. |
| Friend Focused | Only friends can see your profile information and invite you to chat. |
| Solo and Focused | No player can see your profile information or invite you to chat, even if that player is your friend. |
Presets are broad starting points. A custom profile lets you keep, for example, friend requests available while restricting party, game and message interactions, or hide your real name without hiding every activity setting.

For a child family member, the family manager and parents or guardians set the privacy profile. Depending on parental controls, the child may be able to change some options. Sony says the family manager receives a notification when a setting changes and can view activity in the PlayStation Family app.
How do I stop people joining my PS5 party?
Create a Closed Party when you want the strongest join control. An Open Party is easier for friends to discover but can admit friends of the owner and friends of party members without a direct invitation.
- Press the PS button, open Game Base, select the Parties tab, and choose Start Party.
- Choose Open Party or Closed Party.
- In the voice-chat card, select More > Party Settings to rename the party, set a member limit, or change the type later. Only the owner can change these controls.
- For an Open Party, turn on Require Request to Join if people must request approval instead of entering automatically.
- To remove a current member, highlight that player, press Options, and select Kick Out. Kicking is an owner action.
PS5 Closed Party vs Open Party
| Party choice | Who can enter | Useful privacy control |
|---|---|---|
| Open Party | Friends of the owner and friends of party members can join without an invitation. | Enable Require Request to Join and set a member limit. |
| Closed Party | Only selected and invited players can join. | Best choice when random friends should not enter. |
| Party link | Anyone who opens the shared link or QR code in the PlayStation App or on a PS5 can use it to join. | Share only with people you trust; a link can defeat a “friends only” assumption. |
To share a link, open the voice-chat card and select Share Party Link, then display the QR code. Joinable parties appear under Game Base > Parties > Joinable, and invitations appear as a notification at the top right. A closed party limits entry, but it does not mute your microphone; that is a separate control.

How do I mute the PS5 microphone?
The DualSense controller has a built-in microphone, so a headset is not required. Sony’s guide says, “Don’t have a headset? No problem, there’s a built-in mic on your DualSense® wireless controller that you can use for voice chat.” Press the controller’s dedicated mute button to mute or unmute it; the sound and on-screen icon confirm the state.
- For an immediate mute, tap the microphone button on the DualSense.
- For a persistent default, press the PS button, open Control Center > Mic, and set Microphone Status When Logged In to Mute.
- To use a different microphone, open Settings > Sound > Microphone, select the Input Device, and use Adjust Microphone Level.
- Confirm the mute icon before joining a party, game, Discord call, or broadcast.
The controller button is a session action and may need to be pressed again after powering on unless the logged-in status is set to Mute. A headset or USB microphone can place the pickup closer to your mouth; Sony’s published guidance describes the controller mic as suitable for a quick conversation and a headset as preferable for longer chat.
What does Mute All do?
On the voice-chat card, choose More > Mute All to silence the party audio you hear. It does not turn off your microphone or prevent other players from hearing you. Audio Balance changes the mix between party voice and other console audio; it also does not change who can hear your mic.
How do I mute game voice chat on PS5?
Open Control Center > Sound > Mute Game Voice Chat, or find the same control in Voice Chat Settings in Game Base. Sony specifies that this setting affects only game-chat audio.
With game voice chat muted, party members can still hear you in PlayStation party chat, and Discord on PS5 can still hear you. If you do not want opponents in a game to hear you, leave game chat and use a Closed Party, or mute the DualSense microphone entirely. Use the voice-chat card’s drop-down to switch between party chat and game chat; some games do not support every Share Screen or Share Play feature with their own voice chat.
How do I mute, block, report, or remove someone?
Mute one player
Press the PS button, open the Party Voice Chat card, select the player, and choose Mute. This changes what you hear from that person without changing the party’s membership or your own microphone state.

Block a player
Blocking is stronger than muting. It prevents the two accounts from inviting each other to parties or using Share Screen together, hides each other’s profiles, activities and personal information on PlayStation Network, prevents messages from being seen when both are in the same messaging group, and prevents hearing each other in the same party voice chat.
From Game Base, open the friends list, select the player’s Online ID, choose the three dots, and select Block. From a party, select the party, choose the player’s Online ID, open View Profile, select the three dots, and choose Block.
Report or kick
Use Voice Chat card > More > Report to submit a report on the console. If you own the party, select a member, press Options, and choose Kick Out. Kicking ends that person’s access to the current room; blocking also changes future communication between the accounts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWho can see my name while I talk on PS5?
People already in the party can see your Online ID in the member list. That identity is separate from your real name and profile picture. Privacy settings can hide real-name and profile information, but you cannot hide your Online ID from someone who is already in the same party.
How does Display Who’s Speaking work?
Display Who’s Speaking is a local on-screen indicator. It shows the active speaker’s name on your own screen; it does not reveal a new identity to the party and you cannot remotely stop another member from enabling it.
- Join a PlayStation party.
- Open Control Center > Voice Chat and select the three-dot More menu.
- Choose Display Who’s Speaking, then turn on Display Names.
- Use Position to move the indicator away from a health bar or mini-map.
- Turn Display Names off to remove the overlay from your screen.
Sony documents the feature for PlayStation party chat. It does not apply to in-game voice chat, where a game may provide its own speaker display. The public release that officially included it was system software 26.06-14.00.00, released 16 September 2026 (Engadget, 2026), and it works on both PS5 and PS5 Pro. If the menu is missing, use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Reports of earlier availability and Discord overlay behavior are user reports, not Sony’s documented behavior.

How do I hide my real name on PS5?
Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy > View and Customize Your Privacy Settings, then edit Your real name and profile picture and Personal Info | Messaging. These controls cover visibility in search results, within games, friend suggestions, close friends’ lists of friends, and who can communicate with you. Friend Focused and Solo and Focused are the broad presets for reducing exposure, while custom settings let you keep selected social features.

Can my PS5 voice be recorded in broadcasts or clips?
Yes, but two permissions must align. In Voice Chat Settings, choose whether to allow your voice to be used in other players’ broadcasts and video clips. The in-menu wording may appear as Share Your Voice.
The streamer must also enable Include Party Audio: use Create > Broadcast > Broadcast Options > Audio, or Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Broadcasts > Audio. Each friend must allow their own voice to be shared. Turning off your permission prevents your party voice from being included through that consent path, but it does not erase audio another player already captured.
Does Discord use the same PS5 privacy controls?
Discord voice on PS5 is a separate communication service. Link it through Game Base > Discord > Link Account, then use Direct Voice Chats. The DualSense mute button and selected headset or USB microphone remain the audio input controls, but Discord’s own privacy rules are outside Sony’s four party privacy presets. Mute Game Voice Chat does not mute Discord.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which PS5 voice features are not party-chat privacy controls?
Keep these accessibility and voice-input features separate from party controls:
- Screen Reader: Settings > Accessibility > Screen Reader reads menus; it does not read party members’ voices.
- Voice Command (Preview): found at Settings > Voice Command (Preview), with the wake phrase “Hey PlayStation.” Sony’s default stops listening after four seconds of inactivity. The preview is for United States and United Kingdom English.
- Chat Transcription: available at Settings > Accessibility > Chat Transcription and from the party More menu. It converts other players’ voices in parties and supported games to text and can read text you enter aloud to other players.
A report citing Sony says Voice Command voice data may involve human review of written transcripts unless Don’t Allow is selected under Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy > Voice Data Collection. That is Voice Command privacy, not a party-chat mute switch.

What is the most private PS5 voice-chat setup?
For a private conversation, use a Closed Party, invite only the intended accounts, leave party links unshared, set Microphone Status When Logged In to Mute, and unmute only when speaking. In Privacy, choose Friend Focused or Solo and Focused, or customize Communication and multiplayer and Personal Info | Messaging. Disable permission for your voice to be used in other players’ broadcasts and clips unless you explicitly consent.
If an individual is the problem, block that account rather than relying on Mute All. If opponents are hearing you, use Mute Game Voice Chat or leave game chat; remember that neither option replaces the DualSense mute control for party or Discord audio.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can people hear me in game chat if I am in party chat?
They can if your game has you connected to its game-chat channel and your microphone is unmuted. Switch the voice-chat card to party chat and use Mute Game Voice Chat, or leave the game-chat channel, to keep opponents from receiving your voice.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does PS5 remember that I muted the DualSense microphone?
A tap of the controller mute button is not the same as a startup preference. Set Microphone Status When Logged In to Mute if you want each new login to begin muted, then unmute deliberately when needed.
Can another party member see my legal name?
Only if your real-name and messaging privacy rules allow that audience to see it. Your Online ID remains visible to members of the party even when your real name and profile picture are restricted.
Why can’t I find Display Who’s Speaking?
The feature depends on system software and is documented for PlayStation party chat, not game chat. Update through Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software; the public release carrying it is 26.06-14.00.00.
How do I stop my voice appearing in a friend’s stream?
Turn off the permission in Voice Chat Settings (sometimes labeled Share Your Voice). A stream also needs Include Party Audio enabled, and each participant controls their own consent, so ask the broadcaster to check that option as well.
