In normal circumstances, a PS5 system-software update does not delete your installed games or saved progress. The update changes the console operating system; it is not the same operation as reinstalling system software. Your games, applications, screenshots, clips, settings and saves should remain on the console when the update completes. The operation that erases the console is the separate Safe Mode command to reinstall system software, which Sony describes as a factory-reset-style process.
Game patches are another separate process. A game can update in Rest Mode or when you launch it, but that does not mean the PS5 firmware update has changed your save files. The important distinction is which update or recovery command you selected.
Will a normal PS5 system update delete my games or saves?
No. A routine system-software update is designed to replace or add operating-system components while leaving console storage data and saved data in place. Sony’s ordinary update path is Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings; those instructions do not direct you to erase games or saves.

After the restart, installed applications should still appear on the Games home screen, and your progress should be available when you start a title. A successful firmware update can change menus, security components, compatibility behavior or other operating-system features, but it is not a request to format the internal drive.

What the update changes
- The PS5 operating system and its supporting system components.
- System-level features, compatibility fixes and security updates included in that firmware release.
- The version number shown under Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
What it normally leaves alone
- Games and applications already installed on console storage.
- Saved progress stored on the console.
- Captures and most personal settings, unless a separate recovery or reset operation is performed.
If a game appears to be missing after an update, first check Game Library, the storage location and whether the account that purchased it is signed in. A missing icon is not proof that the firmware update erased the title.
How is a PS5 system-software update different from a game update?
A system-software update updates the PS5 itself. A game or application update updates one title. They use different controls and can occur at different times, so a patch downloading in the background is not evidence that the console firmware update altered your save.
System software
Use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings to check for, download and install firmware. The console may restart during installation. Do not switch it off while the installation is running; Sony warns that interrupting installation can damage the console.

Automatic game updating is controlled under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates. You can allow downloads and installations while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, or a title can prompt for its own update when launched. A game patch can change its files without changing the PS5 system-software version.
What happens to games stored on the PS5, USB drive or M.2 SSD?
The location of a game matters if you later restore the console or troubleshoot storage, but it does not turn an ordinary firmware update into a factory reset.

| Storage location | What a routine system update does | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 console storage | Installed games normally remain installed. | Reinstalling system software, unlike updating, deletes console data. |
| USB extended storage | The drive and its game files are separate from the firmware update. | PS5 games on USB extended storage must be moved to console storage or an M.2 SSD before they can be played. |
| M.2 SSD | Installed game data normally remains available after an ordinary update. | Keep the drive installed and recognized if you need those games after a restore. |
| Disc-based game | The installed application remains subject to the same update behavior. | You still need the disc to launch a disc license, even if the application is installed. |
Sony’s full-console backup has a specific external-storage caveat: game files on USB extended storage are not included in the backup archive. If you perform a restore workflow, retain that drive and reconnect it afterward rather than assuming the backup contains those installations.
If you deliberately delete an installed game to make room, the purchase is still associated with your account. You can download the title again from your game library; deleting the application is not the same as deleting the entitlement to a purchased game.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will PS5 saved data remain after updating?
Yes, saved data should remain after a normal system-software update. If the progress is important, Sony documents two protection methods: a full USB backup of the console or PlayStation Plus cloud storage configured to synchronize saves.
Full USB backup
A full-console backup can include games, applications, saved data, screenshots, video clips and settings. It is a broad recovery snapshot rather than a simple copy of one PS5 save.
- Connect a compatible USB drive with enough free capacity for the data you want to preserve.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Select the categories to include and start the backup.
- Leave the console powered and connected until it reports completion, then eject the drive safely.
Restoring that backup is destructive to the current console state: Sony’s restore process erases data currently on the PS5 before applying the archive. Treat restoration as a deliberate recovery operation, not as a routine step before every firmware update.

PlayStation Plus cloud storage
With cloud synchronization configured, compatible saved data can upload automatically and be downloaded to a replacement or restored console. Sony’s current guidance states an allowance of up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data. Cloud synchronization is optional; a normal firmware update does not require a subscription.
Before relying on the cloud, confirm that the console has completed its most recent upload. A console that has been offline, powered down before synchronization, or configured to suspend automatic uploads may have a newer local save than the cloud copy.
Why PS5 saves cannot simply be copied like PS4 saves
Sony’s transfer guidance distinguishes PS5 and PS4 save handling. PS5 saved data cannot be copied individually from the PS5 console to a USB drive in the same way as PS4 saved data. For PS5 progress, use the full-console backup route or PlayStation Plus cloud storage rather than expecting a per-save USB export.
What is the difference between updating and reinstalling PS5 system software?
The file names and Safe Mode screens can look similar, but the consequences are completely different. Updating preserves the console’s data in normal use; reinstalling is an erase-and-rebuild operation.
| Operation | Where it is started | Data consequence | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Routine system-software update | Settings, or the official manual-update path | Games and saves should remain. | Normal firmware maintenance. |
| Game/application update | Automatic Updates settings, a game prompt or Rest Mode | Updates one title’s files; it is separate from firmware. | Bug fixes, content and compatibility for a game. |
| Full USB backup | Back Up and Restore in Settings | Creates a recovery archive; it does not itself erase the console. | Protection before replacement or risky troubleshooting. |
| Restore a backup | Back Up and Restore in Settings | Erases current console data before restoring the archive. | Returning the PS5 to an earlier saved state. |
| System-software reinstallation | Safe Mode using the separate reinstallation file | Deletes all data on the PS5 and functions like a factory reset. | Last-resort recovery when ordinary updates and troubleshooting fail. |
Sony’s warning is explicit: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” Do not select a Safe Mode reinstallation merely because a normal update is taking longer than expected.

Do you need to back up a PS5 before a routine update?
No, a backup is not normally required for a standard system-software update. It is sensible when the saves are irreplaceable, the console has shown storage or power problems, or you are about to perform troubleshooting that could lead to a restore or reinstallation.
- Routine update on a healthy console: install the update normally; a backup is optional.
- Important unfinished progress: verify a recent cloud upload or create a full USB backup first.
- Replacing or resetting the console: make a full backup, and separately retain any USB extended-storage drive.
- Persistent update errors: protect saves before escalating to Safe Mode procedures.
A backup is especially valuable when you have limited connectivity or cannot easily redownload large games. Remember that the full archive does not contain games stored on USB extended storage, so preserving that drive is part of the recovery plan.
What should you do if a PS5 system update fails?
Start with the least destructive recovery method. Do not jump directly to reinstallation, because the reinstallation file is the path that deletes the console’s data.
- Retry the download. Check the network connection, free storage and the notification for the exact error code, then attempt the update again from the system-software settings.
- Restart the PS5 normally. After the console has fully shut down, power it on and retry. Do not interrupt an installation that is already in progress.
- Use Safe Mode for non-destructive options. Safe Mode can provide maintenance and update choices. Read each option’s description carefully; an option that says reinstall, reset or delete data is not equivalent to updating.
- Try the official manual USB update. Sony provides a manual update path for cases where the network download fails. Use the update file and folder structure specified by Sony, not the separate system-software reinstallation file.
- Escalate only after protecting data. If the console still cannot update, back up what you can and follow Sony’s support instructions for repair or reinstallation. Reinstallation should be the last resort because it erases the console.
Sony also warns not to turn off the console during installation. A forced shutdown at that point can damage the console and create a more serious recovery problem than a failed download.
How can you check that games and saves are still present?
Once the PS5 has restarted, use a short checklist before assuming anything was lost.

- Open the Games home screen and then Game Library to view installed and purchased titles.
- For a title that appears unavailable, check whether it is on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD and confirm that the drive is connected and recognized.
- Launch the game and inspect its in-game load menu for the expected profile or progress.
- Open the relevant saved-data settings to confirm local data, and check cloud synchronization status if you use PlayStation Plus.
- Verify the system-software version under Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
If the title is in your library but not installed, redownload it rather than interpreting that as proof that the firmware update erased your ownership. If a save is absent both locally and in cloud storage, stop using recovery options that could overwrite data and contact PlayStation Support before attempting a destructive restore.
What should you remember before pressing Update?
- A normal firmware update, a game patch and a system-software reinstallation are three different operations.
- Installed games and ordinary saved data should survive a routine update.
- USB extended-storage game files are outside the full-console backup archive; keep the drive.
- PS5 saves do not have the same individual USB-copy workflow as PS4 saves.
- A full backup protects more categories, while cloud storage is convenient for synchronized saves.
- Never power off the PS5 during installation, and never choose Safe Mode reinstallation unless you accept that all console data will be deleted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a PS5 update remove my game licenses?
A firmware update does not normally remove purchased entitlements. If a title is not installed afterward, sign in to the account that owns it and check Game Library so you can download it again.
How much PlayStation Plus cloud space is available for saves?
Sony’s current support guidance lists up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data and another 100 GB for PS4 saved data. The allowance applies to saved-data storage, not to installed game files.
Recommended Free Tools
Are screenshots and video clips included in a PS5 backup?
Yes. Sony’s full-console backup can include screenshots and video clips alongside applications, games, saved data and settings. A restore still erases the data currently on the console before applying that archive.
Can I use the PS5 while its system software is installing?
No. Installation requires the console to complete its restart sequence, and interrupting that process can damage the console. Wait for the installation to finish rather than disconnecting power or forcing a shutdown.
