PS5 expansion is the better value for most capacity-focused buyers, while Xbox Series X expansion is the simpler installation. A PS5 accepts a standard PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe drive (250GB–8TB) with a correctly sized heatsink. Xbox Series X|S uses a proprietary, Microsoft-licensed Storage Expansion Card. Both expansion paths run current-generation games at the platform’s intended internal-SSD performance; USB drives cannot launch PS5 games or Optimised-for-Series-X|S titles. In the October 2026 US price snapshots, a 4TB PS5-compatible drive reached $499.99 ($125 per TB), while Xbox cards were listed at $199.99 for 1TB and $359.99 for 2TB. Xbox is plug-and-play, but PS5 offers more capacity, more brands and a drive that can later be reused in a PC.

What is the difference between PS5 M.2 storage and an Xbox expansion card?
The PS5 has an open M.2 bay under its side cover. You choose a compatible retail NVMe module, fit a cooling solution, install it with a screwdriver and format it in the console. Xbox Series X and Series S have a rear proprietary expansion port that accepts only licensed cards; a generic NVMe stick, USB enclosure or desktop add-in card will not provide playable Series X|S storage.
PS5: an open standard with a strict fit
Sony’s current support requirements allow a PCI-Express Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe drive with a Key M connector. Supported capacities are 250GB through 8TB, and the listed form factors are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. The usual retail choice is 2280, but the length must match the spacer position in the console.
The complete drive-and-heatsink assembly may be no more than 25mm wide and 11.25mm thick. Sony specifies up to 8.0mm above the circuit board and 2.45mm below it. A heatsink or heat-transfer sheet is required; M.2 SATA and PCIe Gen3 drives are not supported. Sony recommends at least 5,500MB/s sequential read, although it warns that a faster rating does not guarantee identical performance to the internal Ultra-High Speed SSD.

Xbox: a closed, licensed connector
The Xbox card slides into the dedicated rear port and is pre-formatted for the console. Seagate, WD_BLACK and SanDisk sell licensed cards. Capacities in 2026 include 512GB, 1TB and 2TB from multiple makers, while Seagate also offers a 4TB model introduced in June 2025. Cards are hot-swappable and can move between Series X|S consoles; they do not work in a PC or Xbox One.
PS5 SSD vs Xbox storage expansion card: which gives more space for less?
On a dollars-per-terabyte basis, PS5 has the advantage when you choose a high-capacity Gen4 drive. Xbox pricing became more competitive against premium PS5 drives after NAND prices rose sharply in 2026, so the old rule that every Xbox card is dramatically more expensive is no longer reliable.

For smaller capacities, a 1TB Xbox card can cost less than a premium 1TB PS5 drive. A budget PS5 Gen4 module can still undercut both, especially at 2TB or 4TB. Do not compare a bare PS5 drive with a fully licensed Xbox card without adding the cost of a suitable heatsink and considering installation effort.
How fast are the two expansion options?
Each console’s official expansion path is engineered to keep current-generation games playable at that console’s internal-SSD level. The published numbers describe different I/O architectures, so they are not a valid cross-platform benchmark.
PS5 sequential-read requirement
Sony recommends 5,500MB/s or faster sequential read for an add-in M.2. Popular 2026 models such as the WD_BLACK SN850P are rated up to 7,300MB/s read and 6,600MB/s write, while Samsung 990 PRO-class drives are listed at up to about 7,450MB/s read. Those are vendor or retailer specifications, not matched console load-time measurements. Sony does not publish a sequential-MB/s figure for the internal PS5 SSD on the M.2 support page.

StorageDiskPrices says a budget Gen4 drive that meets Sony’s 5,500MB/s recommendation performs the same in the PS5 as a premium model because the console caps throughput. That is the tracker’s editorial conclusion, not an independent laboratory result. Sony’s own qualification is important: “Not all games are necessarily playable with the exact same performance provided by the PS5 console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD, even where the M.2 SSD device’s sequential read speed is faster than 5500MB/s.”
Xbox Velocity Architecture
Microsoft’s Xbox Wire specification gives the Series X|S custom internal SSD 2.4GB/s of raw I/O throughput, more than 40 times Xbox One’s throughput. The licensed card uses the same performance target and hardware decompression path. Xbox Wire says, “The Seagate Storage Expansion Card was designed using the Xbox Velocity Architecture to deliver the exact same consistent, sustained performance of our internal SSD ensuring you have the exact same gameplay experience regardless of where the game resides.”
IGN (2024) and Windowsforum (2026, citing Xbox materials) also report up to 4.8GB/s with compressed data. The 4.8GB/s figure is a compressed-throughput claim and should not be compared directly with Sony’s sequential-read recommendation. No matched PS5-versus-Xbox expansion load-time study establishes a universal winner.
How much storage does a PS5 and Xbox Series X actually have?
Advertised capacity is not the space available for games after system software reserves its share. Swappa’s guide, updated 10 October 2026, gives these approximate usable figures:
| Console | Advertised internal storage | Approximate usable storage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original PS5 and PS5 Digital (2020) | 825GB | About 667GB | Integral Memory also describes the usable figure as closer to 667GB after system software |
| PS5 Slim | 1TB | About 848GB | Some later CFI-2100 digital units use an 825GB drive |
| PS5 Pro | 2TB | About 1.89TB | Disc-less model |
| Xbox Series X | 1TB | About 802GB | Applies to disc and digital Series X models |
| Xbox Series S | 512GB / 1TB | About 364GB / 800GB | Included for comparison; it is not the Series X model |
Usable space is approximate and can decline slightly as system software grows. Microsoft’s 2TB Series X hardware SKU was discontinued after the August 2026 price changes, so remaining units are becoming a used-market option rather than a standard retail baseline.
Can I use a regular external SSD to play PS5 or Xbox Series X games?
No. USB storage is an archive for current-generation games, not a replacement for the internal drive or official expansion path. It remains useful for older games and for moving large installs without downloading them again.

PS5 USB requirements
Sony requires SuperSpeed USB at 5Gbps or faster, a 250GB minimum and an 8TB maximum. Do not use a USB hub, and only one USB extended-storage volume can be active at a time. PS5 games can be moved to the USB drive, but they must be copied back before launching; PS4 games can install and run directly from USB.
Xbox USB requirements
Xbox USB 3.0 or later storage with at least 128GB can hold games and apps. It can run backward-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles, and it can act as a vault for Series X|S games. Series X|S titles must be transferred to the internal SSD or licensed expansion card before play. Setting up an Xbox game drive reformats it, so copy personal files elsewhere first.
Do I need a heatsink for my PS5 M.2 SSD?
Yes. Sony requires effective heat dissipation, using a heatsink, heat-transfer sheet or an integrated cooling structure. The entire assembly must remain within the 11.25mm thickness limit. If the SSD already has a heatsink, do not stack a second one on top.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen shopping, check the manufacturer’s dimensional drawing rather than relying on a “PS5 compatible” label alone. A bare 2280 drive plus a low-profile heatsink can work, but the combined height must satisfy Sony’s above-board and below-board limits. If the slot cover will not close, stop and replace the cooling solution; do not force the cover or operate the console with it removed.
What should I check before fitting a PS5 M.2 SSD?
Update the PS5 system software first and prepare a well-lit table, a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver and, optionally, a flashlight. Sony also advises electrostatic-discharge precautions. The original CFI-1000 chassis and later CFI-2000/7000 bodies have different cover-removal procedures, so follow the walkthrough for your exact model.
- Verify the interface. Confirm PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, Key M and Socket 3. Reject M.2 SATA and PCIe Gen3 drives.
- Verify speed. Choose a sequential-read rating of at least 5,500MB/s. A listing that advertises 5,000MB/s, such as the Samsung 990 EVO example tracked in October, is below Sony’s recommendation.
- Verify capacity and dimensions. Stay between 250GB and 8TB, select a supported length, and calculate total width and thickness with the heatsink installed.
- Power down completely. Unplug the console, remove the correct side cover and open the expansion-bay cover without forcing clips.
- Set the spacer. Move the screw-and-spacer to the hole matching the module length, usually 2280.
- Install the module. Insert the M.2 at an angle, press it down and secure it with the supplied screw. The heatsink must sit flat.
- Close and format. Replace the bay cover and console cover before powering on. On first use, the PS5 formats the entire drive; partial formatting is not supported.
- Move games deliberately. All data for one game must live in one location; a game cannot be split between internal and M.2 storage.
Sony says warranty coverage should not be affected when the drive meets its specifications and the installation instructions are followed, but damage caused by improper installation is not covered. Do not power on with the cover off.

How do I install an Xbox Series X storage expansion card?
Installation takes seconds and requires no screwdriver. Remove the card’s protective cover, align it with the rear expansion port and push it in until seated. Seagate’s orientation guidance places the Nexus logo toward the USB and Ethernet side; the console displays a ready notification when the card is recognised.
Cards can be removed and moved between Series X|S consoles. Sign in with the same account, or insert the game disc when required for a disc-based title. The card is not a general-purpose PC drive and is not compatible with Xbox One.
Which PS5 drives and Xbox cards are sensible choices in 2026?
PS5 playable expansion
- WD_BLACK SN850P 2TB: A licensed PS5 model with an integrated heatsink, rated up to 7,300MB/s read and 6,600MB/s write in 2026 manufacturer material.
- WD_BLACK SN850X 1TB, 2TB or 4TB: Up to 7,300MB/s sequential read; select the heatsink SKU or add a low-profile cooler that meets Sony’s clearance.
- Samsung 990 PRO with heatsink, 1TB or 2TB: A common high-end option; verify the heatsink dimensions and the 5,500MB/s-or-faster rating for the exact listing.
- Budget Gen4 2280 drive: Any in-stock PCIe Gen4 x4 model meeting Sony’s speed and size rules can be adequate. The 4TB WD Blue SN5100 at $499.99 was the lowest tracked cost-per-terabyte example on 29 October 2026.
Do not buy an M.2 SATA drive, a Gen3 drive or a model below Sony’s recommended sequential-read speed. A drive’s marketing claim that it is “for gaming” does not override the console’s interface and thermal limits.
Xbox playable expansion
- Seagate Storage Expansion Card: 1TB, 2TB and 4TB choices, with the 4TB model launched in 2025; it is the longest-running licensed option.
- WD_BLACK C50: Licensed 512GB, 1TB and 2TB cards; 2026 comparisons cite a five-year warranty.
- SanDisk Optimus GX C50: Licensed 512GB, 1TB and 2TB range announced in August 2026. The product line is transitioning from the WD_BLACK C50 naming.
All licensed cards are designed to match the internal SSD’s sustained performance, including Quick Resume. Compare the warranty, capacity and current sale price rather than assuming one brand is faster.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can I use the same SSD in both a PS5 and Xbox Series X?
No. A PS5 M.2 module cannot plug into the Xbox expansion port, and an Xbox card is not a standard PC-readable NVMe drive. You can move a PS5 M.2 between PS5 consoles, generally without reformatting when the same account is signed in, while Xbox cards move between Series X|S consoles but remain tied to that ecosystem.

PS5’s open M.2 format has one long-term advantage: after removal, the module can be reused in a compatible PC. Xbox’s proprietary card offers simpler console portability but no equivalent PC reuse.

What are the main buying pitfalls?
- Confusing advertised and usable capacity: An original 825GB PS5 leaves about 667GB, and a 1TB Series X leaves about 802GB.
- Buying USB storage for current-generation play: USB can archive PS5 and Series X|S games but cannot launch them.
- Ignoring heatsink height: The PS5 limit is 11.25mm for the complete assembly, not just the bare SSD.
- Using an old capacity ceiling: Sony’s current support text allows 8TB M.2 drives, and Seagate has a real 4TB Xbox card; older guides that stop at 4TB for PS5 or 2TB for Xbox are outdated.
- Treating sequential figures as a cross-console speed test: PS5’s 5,500MB/s recommendation and Xbox’s 2.4GB/s raw I/O figure describe different pipelines.
- Trusting a stale sale price: October 2026 figures are snapshots. Used listings, promotional sales and NAND-price swings can change the ranking quickly.
- Forgetting reformat warnings: Xbox setup erases the drive, and PS5’s first use formats the entire M.2 module.
How we picked the options
The comparison uses the official playable-storage rules for each console, maximum supported capacity, installation requirements, portability, published performance architecture and dated US price snapshots. Products were included only when the cited specifications identify the correct interface, license or thermal fit. Prices are dated to October 2026 where available and are not promises of a current checkout price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move a PS5 M.2 SSD to another PS5 without losing games?
Sony allows an M.2 already formatted in one PS5 to be moved to another PS5 without reformatting when the same account is signed in. Shut both consoles down fully and handle the module carefully; the destination console still needs compatible system software.
What happens if my PS5 SSD heatsink is too tall?
The expansion-bay cover will fail to close or may press against the cooling assembly. Do not run the console with the cover removed; replace the heatsink with a lower-profile model that keeps the complete assembly within Sony’s limits.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Are Xbox expansion cards backward-compatible with Xbox One consoles?
No. The cards are designed for Series X|S and do not work on Xbox One or as ordinary PC storage. A USB game drive is the compatible way to run Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles while also storing Series X|S games.
Why can a cheaper PS5 SSD be as good for games as a premium model?
Once a Gen4 drive meets Sony’s 5,500MB/s recommendation and has adequate cooling, the console—not the drive’s peak marketing number—sets the practical limit. Higher-rated models can still make sense for warranty, endurance or PC reuse, but their extra sequential speed is not proof of shorter console load times.
