The best PS5 setup is a compatibility-first baseline, not a magic collection of numbers. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, leave Resolution and 4K Video Transfer Rate on Automatic, set HDR to On When Supported, and run Adjust HDR. Enable VRR or ALLM only when your television, HDMI input, cable, and game support them. For audio, select the device you actually use and configure 3D Audio for TV speakers or headphones. For downloads, a wired LAN connection and Rest Mode downloads are the most defensible changes; DNS and MTU are troubleshooting tools, not universal speed switches.

The table separates settings that are broadly safe starting points from features that depend on the rest of your equipment. A PS5 cannot create HDR, 4K/120Hz, VRR, network bandwidth or surround decoding that the connected hardware and service do not provide.

Which PS5 picture settings should I change first?

Start with automatic output and calibrate HDR for the exact display and room where you play. These choices preserve compatibility while allowing the console and television to negotiate their highest supported mode.

Use Automatic output as the baseline

  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  2. Set Resolution to Automatic. Choose a fixed resolution only when a known display problem requires it.
  3. Leave 4K Video Transfer Rate on Automatic for normal use.
  4. Leave RGB Range on Automatic unless the television documentation specifically requires a matching manual range.

Automatic values let the console read the capabilities reported by the television. An RGB-range mismatch can cause raised blacks, crushed blacks or an otherwise incorrect image, so forcing Full or Limited without a reason can make the picture worse.

Why is HDR set to On When Supported?

On When Supported is the safest general HDR choice because it enables HDR for games and video that provide it while leaving standard-dynamic-range content in its native mode. PlayStation describes HDR as delivering “a higher contrast—or larger color and brightness range—than Standard Dynamic Range (SDR).”

Choose Always On only as a personal preference. It can apply HDR processing to non-HDR content, and the result depends on the television’s tone mapping. It is not a universal quality upgrade.

How do I calibrate PS5 HDR correctly?

  1. Connect the PS5 to the television you intend to use and select the TV’s gaming picture mode if that mode is appropriate for your setup.
  2. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR.
  3. Follow the three on-screen calibration screens. Adjust until the symbol is barely visible as instructed, rather than making the image look subjectively brighter.
  4. Repeat the process if you move the console to another display or materially change the display mode or room conditions.

Calibration is tied to the display’s brightness and tone-mapping behavior. Repeating it after changing televisions, HDR modes or major room lighting gives the console a more appropriate reference.

What do I need for 4K at 120Hz, VRR and ALLM?

These features require an intact signal chain: the PS5, the game, the HDMI cable, the television’s specific input and its firmware must all support the requested mode. A menu option cannot add capability that one of those links lacks.

4K and 120Hz

PS5 supports the HDMI 2.1 specification and 4K 120Hz output. To use it, connect the console to an HDMI 2.1-capable port on a compatible display, keep the display firmware current, and use the cable included with the PS5 or another Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. Many televisions have only one or two full-bandwidth ports; the port label and the television’s information panel matter.

The game must also offer a 120Hz or performance mode. A display can report 4K/120Hz capability while a particular title renders at a different frame rate. Check the game’s own graphics options and the television’s signal-information screen when the expected mode does not appear.

VRR and Apply to Unsupported Games

Enable VRR only when the television supports it and the console is connected to a compatible input. The optional Apply to Unsupported Games switch can change behavior in titles that do not officially advertise VRR support; results vary by game and display. Treat it as a troubleshooting or experimentation option, not a guaranteed improvement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ALLM and low-latency mode

Enable ALLM when the television supports automatic low-latency switching. Otherwise, select the TV’s gaming or low-latency mode manually when you want reduced display processing. If colors, resolution or refresh rate change unexpectedly, first verify the HDMI input and the TV’s per-input settings before changing several PS5 options.

What should I do if the image flickers or the signal drops?

  1. Confirm that the cable is firmly seated at both ends and that the PS5 is connected directly to the display or to an HDMI path rated for the desired bandwidth.
  2. Check that the selected television input supports the mode and that its firmware is current.
  3. Return Resolution and 4K Video Transfer Rate to Automatic if they were forced manually.
  4. If a supported display still flickers or loses signal, test 4K Video Transfer Rate: -1, then -2. These are compatibility workarounds, not sharper or faster quality settings.

How do I get better PS5 sound?

First identify the real output device, then match the PS5 format to that device’s decoder and connection. There is no single best audio format for every television, soundbar, receiver and headset combination.

Select the device and review its format

  1. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  2. Set Output Device to the equipment you are actually using: TV, headphones, soundbar or AV receiver.
  3. Review Audio Format (Priority) and choose a format your connected equipment and cable path can decode.
  4. Keep the console output device and a receiver or soundbar’s input mode aligned.

If audio is missing, delayed or limited to stereo, test the cable path and output format one change at a time. Changing multiple formats simultaneously makes it difficult to identify whether the decoder, television pass-through or cable path is responsible.

How do I set up 3D Audio for TV speakers?

For television speakers, use the PS5’s room-measurement process from the position where you normally sit. PlayStation says 3D Audio can make TV-speaker sound feel as if it comes from all around you.

  1. Go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV Speakers) or the equivalent 3D-audio setup entry shown on your console.
  2. Follow the measurement prompts while seated in your usual position and keep the room quiet.
  3. Save the resulting profile and compare it with the normal stereo option in a game that has clear positional cues.

Room geometry and seating position affect the result, so repeat the measurement if the television or your main seat moves.

How do I set up 3D Audio for headphones?

Headphones use a personalized profile rather than the TV-speaker room measurement. Enable 3D Audio, measure the headphones as prompted, and select the profile that matches the headphones you are wearing.

  1. Connect the compatible headset or headphones.
  2. Open Settings > Sound and enable the headphone 3D-audio option.
  3. Complete the profile measurement and save the profile.
  4. Adjust the headset’s own volume and chat controls separately from the PS5’s output selection.

Personalized headphone 3D Audio is useful when you want positional detail without a receiver or soundbar. It does not make every recording multichannel; the game or video still determines the source mix.

How can I make PS5 downloads more reliable?

Connection quality, available bandwidth and network congestion usually matter more than a hidden PS5 toggle. Use Ethernet when practical, then enable Internet access in Rest Mode so queued work can continue while you are away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prefer wired LAN when Wi-Fi is the bottleneck

Connect the PS5 to the router with an Ethernet cable when the console is far from the router, separated by dense walls, or competing with many wireless devices. A Cat6 or Cat6a cable can remove a variable Wi-Fi link and improve consistency, but it cannot overcome a slow internet plan, an overloaded router, household traffic or congestion at the PlayStation service.

No universal percentage or fixed time reduction can honestly be promised from Ethernet. The benefit depends on what is limiting your connection at that moment.

Keep the console connected in Rest Mode

  1. Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
  2. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
  3. In the PS5’s automatic-download and installation settings, enable the update and queued-content options you want to run while the console is in Rest Mode.
  4. Put the console into Rest Mode instead of shutting it down when you want background downloads to continue.

PlayStation defines Rest Mode as a low-power state in which the console can charge controllers and download or install content. It improves convenience and completion time while you are away; it does not guarantee higher server throughput.

Should I change DNS, MTU or proxy settings?

Only change these advanced network controls for a specific ISP, NAT or troubleshooting reason. Official guidance does not establish one DNS server or MTU value that is fastest for every household.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the current values before changing anything.
  2. Change one value at a time through Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
  3. Check sign-in, NAT type, multiplayer connectivity and download behavior after each change.
  4. Restore the recorded automatic values if the change introduces errors or no clear benefit.

A custom DNS address can affect name lookup without increasing the bandwidth supplied by your ISP. MTU changes can help a particular path but can also cause connectivity problems when guessed.

Which accessories genuinely help these settings?

Hardware is worthwhile when it removes a known compatibility or connection limitation, not as an automatic quality upgrade.

Accessory When it fits What it cannot guarantee
Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable Using 4K/120Hz or VRR when the existing cable is unknown or unsuitable It cannot improve a display, port or game that lacks the feature
Cat6 or Cat6a Ethernet cable Replacing variable Wi-Fi with a wired LAN path It cannot bypass ISP, router, household or service congestion
PS5-compatible gaming headset or headphones Personalized 3D Audio, clearer positional cues and less reliance on TV speakers It cannot turn every source into surround audio
PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with heatsink Expanding storage and managing installs, copies and launches It is not a guaranteed internet-download-speed upgrade

Buy or replace an accessory only after identifying the limiting link. A working cable, capable port and correctly configured display do not become visibly better merely because a new cable is installed.

How should I troubleshoot without making the problem harder?

Change one variable at a time and keep a known-good baseline. This isolates whether the fault is in the console setting, the display, the cable path, the audio decoder or the network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • No HDR: verify the TV input’s HDR capability, set HDR to On When Supported, then run Adjust HDR again.
  • No 4K/120Hz: check the game mode, HDMI 2.1-capable input, cable, display firmware and the game’s own performance option.
  • Flicker or black screen: reseat the cable, return transfer rate to Automatic, then test -1 and -2 if necessary.
  • No sound or stereo only: confirm Output Device, inspect the receiver or soundbar input mode, and test the cable path before changing formats.
  • Slow downloads: compare wired LAN with Wi-Fi, reduce competing traffic, enable Stay Connected to the Internet, and avoid assuming DNS or MTU is the cause.
  • Unexpected picture processing: check whether Always On HDR, a forced RGB range or a television’s non-gaming picture mode is altering the signal.

What is the safest complete baseline?

For most setups, use Automatic Resolution, Automatic 4K Video Transfer Rate and Automatic RGB Range; HDR On When Supported with a completed Adjust HDR calibration; and VRR or ALLM only when the display supports them. Select the actual audio device, create the appropriate 3D Audio profile, use Ethernet when Wi-Fi is the weak link, and enable Internet access in Rest Mode. Treat -1/-2 transfer-rate values, DNS, MTU and Apply to Unsupported Games as conditional troubleshooting choices rather than universal upgrades.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I check whether my PS5 is actually outputting 4K and 120Hz?

Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and review the available information for the connected HDMI device. Confirm the same signal in the television’s own information panel; the game may still choose a lower-refresh graphics mode even when the console and TV support 120Hz.

Does Rest Mode keep downloading if the PS5 is set to turn off automatically?

Rest Mode can continue downloads only when Stay Connected to the Internet is enabled and the console enters Rest Mode rather than a complete shutdown. Automatic-download settings still determine which updates or queued items are allowed to run.

Why does HDR look gray or too dark after calibration?

Check the television’s HDR picture mode and its per-input black-level or tone-mapping controls before changing the PS5 again. Re-run Adjust HDR after selecting the intended TV mode; forcing Always On HDR can also make SDR content look incorrect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use PS5 3D Audio through a soundbar?

The most direct personalized 3D Audio paths are TV-speaker room measurement and headphone profiles. With a soundbar or AV receiver, select that device as Output Device and use a format its decoder supports; the exact result depends on the receiver, connection path and source mix.

Will an M.2 SSD make game downloads finish faster?

No. A compatible M.2 NVMe SSD expands storage and can handle supported install, copy and launch operations, while internet download time remains governed by the network connection, service congestion and the console’s download path.
