If you find a genuine security vulnerability in a PlayStation 5 system or covered PlayStation service, report it privately through Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation HackerOne program. The live HackerOne policy and scope page—not the words “PS5” or a Sony security-update page—decides whether the exact asset, firmware version and testing method are eligible. Sony says security reports are acknowledged within five business days and receive status updates within 30 business days, subject to incident-specific qualifications. Any bounty is discretionary; the often-quoted $50,000 figure was a 2020 starting bounty for critical PS4 vulnerabilities, not a verified current PS5 payment.
This guide explains how to classify a console issue, check authorization, prepare a useful report, choose the right Sony channel, understand payout and disclosure limits, and avoid testing or publishing mistakes.
What is a PS5 vulnerability bounty?
A vulnerability bounty is a possible payment for privately reporting a security flaw that Sony accepts under the rules of its PlayStation HackerOne program. The program is intended for security issues affecting covered PlayStation products and services. A crash, gameplay defect, offensive message or ordinary usability problem is not automatically a security vulnerability.
Sony describes qualifying security reports in terms of a possible compromise of confidentiality, integrity or availability. In practical terms, your report should show how an attacker could access information, alter something that should be protected, or prevent an authorized function from working. The impact must be connected to a security boundary, not merely an inconvenient behavior.

The program is separate from Sony’s general product-security contact route. Sony’s product-security page directs covered PlayStation reports to HackerOne and directs other Sony assets to Secure@Sony. Read the current program text before testing because the PlayStation-specific policy controls eligibility and may change.
Is my PS5, service or firmware version in scope?
You cannot establish bounty eligibility from the console name alone. Check the live PlayStation policy and scope page for the precise asset, software or firmware version, permitted test methods, exclusions, reward eligibility and disclosure terms.
Why a PS5 security-update listing is not enough
Sony identifies PS5 console models among products that receive security updates. That establishes a product-security connection, not automatic inclusion in the bounty program. A model can receive updates while a particular component, version, service or test technique is excluded from bounty scope.
What to verify before you continue
- The exact product, service, account role and software or firmware version you observed.
- Whether that asset appears in the current PlayStation HackerOne scope list.
- Whether the policy permits the type of testing you plan to perform.
- Out-of-scope components, third-party services, denial-of-service activity, social engineering, attacks on other people and any other prohibited method.
- Whether the policy gives the finding bounty eligibility or treats it as a report-only issue.
- The policy’s current disclosure and safe-harbor language. Do not assume generic HackerOne wording supplies PlayStation-specific authorization.
The live PlayStation pages were not readable without JavaScript when the source information was checked in October 2026. Their destinations remain the authoritative place to verify current rules; do not substitute an old copy, a forum post or a general HackerOne summary.
How do I report a PS5 security vulnerability to Sony?
Use a private report to the PlayStation HackerOne program after confirming that your testing is authorized. The following workflow keeps the report reproducible without expanding the test into unnecessary damage.
Also popular on Amazon
- Classify the issue. Decide whether the finding affects confidentiality, integrity or availability. A game crash, a missing feature, a player-behavior complaint or an objectionable message belongs in a different channel unless you can demonstrate a separate security impact.
- Stop and check authorization. Open the current PlayStation HackerOne policy and scope pages. Match the exact console asset or service and firmware or software version. Read exclusions and permitted methods before running another test. If the asset or method is not clearly covered, ask the program through its stated route rather than treating silence as permission.
- Preserve a safe test environment. Use accounts and consoles you control or have explicit permission to test. Avoid accessing another person’s data, changing production records, disrupting service, bypassing protections on unrelated systems or collecting more evidence than necessary. Do not escalate a proof of concept merely to make the issue look more serious.
- Record the observed state. Note the product and version exactly as displayed, account or privilege prerequisites, network conditions that matter, the starting configuration and the point at which the security boundary is crossed. Keep timestamps and non-sensitive logs if they help the reviewer reproduce the result.
- Write reproducible steps. Give a short sequence from a clean starting state to the observed result. Include a minimal proof of concept when one is needed, but omit credentials, session tokens, private keys and other secrets. Explain the expected security behavior and the actual behavior separately.
- Explain impact and limits. State what an attacker could gain or change, which users or assets are affected, what access is required and what the test did not attempt. Remove third-party personally identifiable information. Redact unrelated account data from screenshots, logs and video.
- Submit privately through HackerOne. Send covered PlayStation findings to the PlayStation program at hackerone.com/playstation. Do not post the details publicly first. Keep the report number and respond to clarification requests within the program’s private channel.
- Coordinate next steps. Follow the PlayStation policy and the security team’s messages for retesting, remediation and disclosure. A closure notice, a patch or the passage of a generic number of days is not, by itself, permission to publish exploit details.
What should a strong console-security report contain?
A reviewer should be able to understand the security boundary and reproduce the result without guessing. A concise structure is more useful than a dramatic narrative.
Identity and prerequisites
- Console model or PlayStation service, region if relevant, and exact firmware or software version.
- Required account type, privileges, subscriptions, network position or physical access.
- Whether the behavior occurs on a fresh account, a test account or only after a particular setup.
Reproduction and evidence
- Numbered steps that begin with a known state and end with the vulnerable behavior.
- A minimal proof of concept or safe request sample, with secrets and personal data removed.
- Expected result, actual result and the observable security boundary that was crossed.
- Logs, screenshots or short recordings only where they clarify the finding.
Impact and containment
- Confidentiality, integrity or availability impact, described in concrete terms.
- What an attacker can and cannot do, including required permissions and practical limits.
- Whether you stopped after confirming the issue and whether any test data was deleted or restored.
- Names or identifiers of affected third parties only when necessary, and never another person’s private information.
This is a recommended reporting structure, not a claim that Sony requires these exact headings. The applicable PlayStation policy can impose additional fields or evidence rules.

Which Sony channel should I use?
Choosing the wrong channel can delay triage or send a non-security complaint to a security team. Use the channel that matches the issue’s owner and purpose.
| Issue | Route | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Security flaw in a covered PlayStation product or service | PlayStation HackerOne | Check the live scope, policy, permitted testing and reward terms first. |
| Security issue in another Sony asset | Secure@Sony | Sony distinguishes this route from the PlayStation program. |
| Beta usability or feature feedback | Sony’s beta-feedback channel | A beta bug report is not automatically a bounty submission. |
| Harassment, cheating, offensive messages or other player behavior | PlayStation’s player-behavior reporting tools | Use the behavior-reporting process unless there is a separate security impact. |
| Vulnerability in a third-party game | Start with the applicable program or publisher route | Sony says a report involving a third-party game may be passed to the relevant third party. |
The Sony product-security page explains the distinction between these routes at playstation.com/en-gb/legal/compliance/ukpstiregulations/. A console being used to play a game does not make every defect in that game a Sony-owned vulnerability.
Does Sony pay for PS5 bugs?
Possibly, but no payment is guaranteed. HackerOne’s general standards say the security team decides whether a submission qualifies for a bounty and determines the amount. A valid security report can therefore receive recognition without a cash award, depending on the PlayStation policy and the team’s assessment.

The frequently quoted $50,000 figure
On June 24, 2020, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced a $50,000 starting bounty for critical PS4 vulnerabilities. Geoff Norton, then SIE Senior Director of Software Engineering, said the program was intended to help deliver “a safer place to play.” See the original announcement at blog.playstation.com/2020/06/24/announcing-the-playstation-bug-bounty-program/.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat historical PS4 launch figure is not a verified current PS5 minimum, maximum or typical payout. The current PlayStation reward table was not available for verification here, so do not quote a PS5 dollar amount unless the live policy states it.
General payment conditions
HackerOne’s general disclosure standards include payment-eligibility restrictions, sanctions-related restrictions, rules for minors claiming awards and tax responsibilities. Those general provisions do not replace PlayStation-specific eligibility or establish a PlayStation reward table. Read the current terms at hackerone.com/terms/disclosure-guidelines together with the PlayStation program policy.
How quickly will Sony respond?
Sony says it will acknowledge a reported security issue within five business days and provide status updates within 30 business days. The Sony page was checked in 2026; that year identifies the verification date, not a claimed publication date. Sony also qualifies these timelines for incident-specific circumstances, so they are service targets rather than a promise of resolution or payment.
If you do not receive an expected update, keep the original private report and use the program’s stated follow-up route. Do not resend sensitive details publicly or open duplicate reports that could expose the finding.

Can I publish a PS5 exploit after reporting it?
Assume the report is private at first. HackerOne’s general standards describe reports as non-public initially and allow different disclosure settings, but the PlayStation-specific policy and the security team’s communications control your case. Do not infer permission from a patch, a report closure, a fixed number of days or another researcher’s disclosure.
Before publishing, confirm in writing what may be disclosed, when it may be disclosed and which technical details, affected versions and proof-of-concept material are permitted. If the policy is unclear, ask through the private program channel and wait for an answer. A public post can expose users, enable exploitation and jeopardize triage even when the original report was well intentioned.
How should I handle a PS5 console while researching?
Research only hardware, accounts and networks you own or are expressly authorized to examine. Keep a restorable configuration, separate test accounts from personal accounts and avoid storing other people’s data in evidence. A physical console can be useful for legitimate research on your own equipment, but buying a PS5 does not create bounty eligibility or imply that any particular model or firmware is in scope.
Record the firmware version as observed rather than assuming that the latest update or a beta build has the same rules as a retail release. If the finding depends on a beta feature, identify that status clearly and check whether the program treats beta software separately.

- Assuming the product name is scope. “PS5” is not a substitute for the asset and version listed in the live policy.
- Using an old payout chart. The 2020 PS4 announcement cannot establish a current PS5 reward.
- Testing other people’s accounts. Demonstrating access to personal data can create additional harm and privacy obligations.
- Over-testing. Stop after a safe, repeatable demonstration; do not pursue broader access, persistence or disruption just to increase impact.
- Sending a gameplay complaint to security. Crashes, balance issues and abusive messages need their dedicated reporting channels unless a distinct security consequence exists.
- Publishing first. Public disclosure can remove the program’s ability to coordinate a fix and may violate applicable rules.
- Including secrets in evidence. Remove passwords, tokens, private keys, personal identifiers and unrelated logs before uploading files.
- Promising a payout. Reward decisions are discretionary and depend on the applicable policy.
How should I evaluate a claim that a PS5 bug is bounty-eligible?
Ask five questions in order: Is the exact asset listed? Is the observed firmware or software version covered? Was the test method permitted? Does the finding demonstrate a security impact rather than a defect? Do the reward and disclosure terms actually apply to this report?

If any answer is unknown, treat eligibility as unconfirmed and consult the live PlayStation policy. This approach is safer than relying on a console model, a historical bounty headline, a generic HackerOne rule or a social-media claim.
How we picked the guidance
The guidance prioritizes Sony’s current routing and response statements, the live PlayStation HackerOne scope and policy as the controlling documents, and HackerOne’s general disclosure standards only where they are clearly identified as general. Historical payment information is included solely with its 2020 PS4 context; no unverified PS5 reward, firmware list or safe-harbor promise is presented as fact.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a PS5 beta bug report the same as a bug bounty report?
No. Beta feedback usually concerns usability, features or ordinary defects, while a bounty report must describe a security impact and satisfy the PlayStation program’s scope and testing rules. If a beta issue has a separate confidentiality, integrity or availability consequence, identify the beta status and check the live policy before submitting it as a security report.
What if my vulnerability affects a third-party game running on PS5?
Identify whether the flaw is in the console platform or in the game’s own code and service. Sony says a third-party-game security report may be passed to the relevant third party, so do not assume the PlayStation program owns the fix or the reward decision.
Can I submit a report if I am under 18?
Possibly, but payment eligibility can have special conditions. HackerOne’s general standards address rules for minors claiming awards; review those terms and the PlayStation policy before expecting a cash payment.
What should I do if my report contains someone else’s personal information?
Do not upload unnecessary personal data. Remove or redact it, explain that the data was encountered, and ask the program privately how to transfer or securely delete any unavoidable evidence.
Does a security update guarantee that Sony will accept my bounty report?
No. A security-update commitment shows that Sony supports product security, but it does not place every model, component or firmware version in bounty scope. Acceptance and reward eligibility still depend on the live PlayStation HackerOne policy.
