PS5 Slim is the better value for most buyers; PS5 Pro is the premium graphics choice. At Sony’s U.S. direct store, checked October 29, 2026, the 1TB PS5 costs $649, while PS5 Pro costs $899—a $250 difference before accessories. The Pro earns that premium with a much faster GPU, PSSR image reconstruction, advanced ray tracing, 2TB of storage, and enhanced modes that can preserve more visual quality at 60fps in supported games. It does not make every game native 4K at 120fps, and its biggest advantages are easiest to see on a 4K display, especially one with 120Hz support.
Choose Slim for lower cost, straightforward disc ownership, a 1080p or 60Hz television, or games without meaningful Pro enhancements. Choose Pro if you have a capable 4K/120Hz setup, play several PS5 Pro Enhanced titles, and value image quality enough to pay for additional rendering headroom.

Both consoles use the same Zen 2 CPU design—eight cores and 16 threads—so PS5 Pro is not a new CPU generation. The major change is graphics performance: Sony lists a 16.7-teraflop AMD Radeon RDNA-based GPU for Pro and 10 teraflops for the current Slim model group. That makes Pro a graphics-focused mid-generation upgrade rather than a wholly different console generation.

Does PS5 Pro run games at 4K and 60fps?
It can in compatible games, but “4K 60fps” is not a universal PS5 Pro output guarantee. Sony says supported titles can target 60fps—or up to 120fps—with 4K output, ray tracing and PSSR simultaneously. The wording matters: results vary by title, and the internal rendering resolution, reconstruction method and graphics settings are chosen by each developer.
On Slim, games commonly offer a choice between a quality mode with higher detail at roughly 30fps and a performance mode with a lower or more variable resolution at 60fps. Pro gives developers more headroom to narrow that compromise. A Pro Enhanced game may retain visual features associated with the quality mode while aiming for the responsiveness of a 60fps mode, but that behavior is not automatic for every game in the library.
Sony says Horizon Forbidden West can reach visual quality comparable to or better than the regular PS5’s Quality mode at 60fps. Insomniac describes a Performance Pro mode in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart that combines crisp 4K resolution and ray-tracing features with 60fps. These are developer examples, not a benchmark for all PS5 software.

A game’s “Enhanced” label also does not imply identical settings across updates. Check the game’s current patch notes or in-game graphics menu when a particular title is the deciding factor.
What does PSSR do on PS5 Pro?
PSSR is Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution image-reconstruction system. It reconstructs a sharper final image from a lower internal render, allowing a game to balance clarity and frame rate without rendering every output pixel natively at the full target resolution.
In supported games, Sony says newer PSSR improvements can make fine details such as hair and cloth clearer and improve image stability. The technique can help a performance mode look cleaner than the same basic resolution target on Slim, but it is not a universal “AI 4K” switch. Image quality varies with the game’s implementation, motion, foliage, particles and update version.

Ray tracing is the other major Pro differentiator. More GPU capacity lets developers add or increase ray-traced reflections, shadows or lighting while maintaining a higher frame-rate target. A title must expose those options; the hardware alone cannot add a ray-tracing mode to an unpatched game.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How much better are PS5 Pro graphics?
Pro’s advantage is best understood as higher-quality choices at a given frame rate, not a promise that every scene will look dramatically different. The 16.7-TFLOPS GPU versus Slim’s 10-TFLOPS GPU gives developers a larger performance budget. PSSR can recover detail from a lower internal resolution, and advanced ray tracing can make lighting and reflections more sophisticated in supported software.
The visible difference depends on screen size, viewing distance, the game’s patch and the mode selected. A large 4K television can reveal fine-detail stability and ray-traced effects more readily than a small 1080p panel. Conversely, a game with no Pro update may look and run much like it does on a standard PS5, subject to any system-level compatibility behavior provided by Sony.
At launch, Sony identified Pro Enhanced updates for games including Alan Wake 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, F1 24, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Metal Gear Solid Delta, No Man’s Sky, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. Sony’s feature page also highlights current examples such as Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The supported list and individual modes can change, so treat this as a snapshot rather than a permanent catalog.
Do you need a 4K or 120Hz TV for PS5 Pro?
You do not need a 120Hz television to use PS5 Pro. A 60Hz display can still show improvements from PSSR, ray tracing and enhanced 30fps or 60fps modes, provided the game supports them. It simply cannot display a 120-frame-per-second signal.
A 4K screen is the most sensible match for Pro’s image-quality goals because higher detail and reconstruction are easier to see at that resolution. For the highest advertised frame-rate examples, choose a display with a 120Hz refresh rate and the appropriate HDMI support. Sony specifically cites 120Hz support for the Stellar Blade example, where developer Shift Up says the game can reach 4K at 50fps or more with smoother gameplay and improved grain and detail in PSSR upscale mode.

Use this display guide:
- 1080p, 60Hz: Slim is usually the rational purchase unless Pro’s storage or a specific enhanced game matters more than price.
- 4K, 60Hz: Pro can improve supported image quality and ray tracing, but its 120fps capability will not be visible.
- 4K, 120Hz HDR: This is the display category that best exposes Pro’s combination of higher visual settings and high-frame-rate modes.
How much storage does each console have?
PS5 Pro includes a 2TB custom SSD. The current Slim documentation lists 1TB for the disc-equipped model and 825GB for the Digital Edition. Usable space is lower after system software, and modern games can consume tens or more than 100GB, so the capacity difference is practical for people who keep a large installed library.
Storage alone does not justify the entire Pro premium for every buyer. Both product families provide an M.2 SSD expansion connector for a compatible PS5 M.2 drive. A buyer who prefers Slim can start with its lower price and add expansion later; SSD prices are volatile, so compare the current drive cost rather than assuming a fixed saving.
Pro’s 2TB is most valuable when convenience matters: fewer reinstalls, more room for large enhanced games and less need to manage an external library. It does not make game loading universally faster than Slim by an amount established in the supplied specifications; both use custom SSD storage.

Does PS5 Pro include a disc drive?
Do not assume that every PS5 Pro package includes an optical drive. Sony’s Pro specifications document a disc-drive port and support for Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray media when a compatible drive is installed. The exact retail package must be checked before purchase.
Sony’s storefront distinguishes the 1TB Slim console from the 825GB Digital Edition. The 1TB configuration is the simpler physical-media route. The Digital Edition and Pro can support a detachable drive where compatible, but the drive’s separate price and availability change the total cost.
If you own PS5 or PS4 discs, include the drive in your Pro budget or select the disc-equipped Slim package. A digital-only console cannot read a disc collection without the compatible hardware, and a disc drive does not turn physical games into portable licenses for another account.

Is PS5 Pro worth $250 more than PS5 Slim?
For a budget-conscious buyer, usually no: Slim delivers access to the same PS5 game library for substantially less. For an enthusiast with a 4K/120Hz display and several Pro Enhanced games, the premium buys graphics headroom, PSSR, stronger ray tracing potential and 2TB storage. Whether that is worth $250 is a use-case decision, not a universal performance verdict.
| Decision factor | Advantage | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front price | PS5 Slim | The direct-store gap is $250 between the $649 1TB Slim and $899 Pro before drive or storage accessories. |
| Graphics ceiling | PS5 Pro | Higher GPU throughput, PSSR and advanced ray tracing support more ambitious modes. |
| High-fidelity 60fps potential | PS5 Pro | Compatible enhanced games can combine settings that Slim may separate between quality and performance modes. |
| Built-in storage | PS5 Pro | 2TB versus 1TB or 825GB reduces how often games need to be deleted. |
| Simple disc ownership | PS5 Slim 1TB | The physical-media configuration is clearer; Pro buyers must verify the drive package. |
| 1080p or 60Hz display fit | PS5 Slim | Those screens cannot show the full benefit of Pro’s 4K and 120Hz targets. |
| Upgrade flexibility | Both | Each family supports compatible M.2 SSD expansion, subject to drive requirements. |
Remember that the price comparison uses two labels: Sony’s U.S. direct-store figures checked October 29, 2026, and its April 2, 2026 announced MSRPs. The former are $899 Pro, $649 1TB Slim and $599 825GB Digital Edition; the latter are $899.99, $649.99 and $599.99 respectively.
Who should buy PS5 Pro?
- 4K/120Hz display owners: The screen can reveal sharper reconstruction, ray-traced effects and high-frame-rate output that a basic panel cannot show.
- Players sensitive to 30fps versus 60fps: Enhanced modes are more likely to retain high visual quality while targeting 60fps, although no title-wide guarantee exists.
- Fans of several Pro Enhanced games: A patch-supported library gives the hardware more opportunities to justify its price.
- Storage-heavy users: The built-in 2TB SSD reduces game juggling.
- Current PS5 owners wanting a graphics upgrade: Pro offers a console-based route to better image quality and ray tracing without moving to a gaming PC.
These are recommendations based on Sony’s feature, specification and pricing information. Individual viewers may perceive the visual difference differently, especially on smaller or lower-refresh displays.
Who should buy PS5 Slim?
- Price-sensitive buyers: The lower entry price leaves money for games, a second controller or storage expansion.
- Physical-game collectors: The 1TB disc configuration is the least complicated way to use PS5 and PS4 discs.
- 1080p or 60Hz TV owners: Slim matches the practical limits of the existing display better.
- Players of unpatched or CPU-limited games: Pro’s GPU features cannot create enhancements a game does not support.
- People comfortable upgrading storage later: An M.2 expansion can address capacity without paying the Pro premium on day one.
What should you check before ordering?
- Identify the exact Slim version. Confirm whether the listing is the 1TB disc model or 825GB Digital Edition.
- Check the display. Note its resolution, refresh rate, HDR capability and HDMI support. A 60Hz screen cannot show 120fps output.
- Review your favorite games. Look for a current PS5 Pro Enhanced designation and the modes offered after the latest update.
- Calculate the complete physical-media cost. If choosing Pro or a Digital Edition, verify whether a detachable disc drive is included, optional or unavailable in that package.
- Estimate storage needs. Compare Pro’s 2TB with Slim’s 1TB or 825GB and the current cost of a compatible M.2 SSD.
- Compare the dated price. Record whether you are using Sony’s direct-store price or announced MSRP, and recheck bundles, stock and taxes at checkout.
What do Sony’s developers say about the upgrade?
Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino describes Pro as technology intended to take the PS5 experience further for dedicated players and creators. Guerrilla studio director and art director Jan-Bart van Beek says the increased performance allowed the studio to raise the quality of Performance and Fidelity modes without compromising the player experience.
Insomniac core technology director Mike Fitzgerald describes Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s Performance Pro mode as combining crisp 4K resolution and ray-tracing features with 60fps. Shift Up technical director and CTO Dongki Lee says Stellar Blade can reach 4K at 50fps or more and gain smoother gameplay and improved grain and detail through PSSR upscale mode. These statements describe particular games and should not be read as a promise for the entire PS5 catalog.
How we picked the recommendation
The comparison weighs the factors that determine the ownership experience: current U.S. pricing, GPU and CPU specifications, image technologies, storage, disc-drive configuration, display requirements and the availability of enhanced game modes. It treats Sony’s “compatible games” and “results vary by title” qualifications as limits, rather than assuming every game receives the same uplift. No independent frame-rate, image-quality, thermal, noise or power measurements are implied.

Bottom line: which PS5 should you buy?
Buy PS5 Slim if value, physical discs, a 1080p/60Hz display or broad access to the PS5 library matters most. Buy PS5 Pro if you already have a strong 4K display—ideally 120Hz—play several enhanced titles and are willing to pay for higher graphics headroom, PSSR, ray tracing and 2TB storage. Pro is the better-equipped console, but Slim is the smarter default because the premium is for potential and convenience, not a guarantee that every game will look or run dramatically differently.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can PS5 Pro play the same games as PS5 Slim?
Yes. PS5 Pro runs the PS5 library, while Pro Enhanced patches can add extra modes or image features to selected games. A patch is optional for the developer, so compatibility does not mean every title receives a visual upgrade.
Will my PS5 games automatically look better on PS5 Pro?
Only to the extent supported by the game and the console’s compatibility features. Check the individual title’s current update notes and graphics options rather than assuming a universal resolution or frame-rate change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use my existing PS5 M.2 SSD in either console?
Both console families provide an M.2 expansion connector, but the drive must meet Sony’s PS5 compatibility requirements. Verify the drive’s interface, capacity, heatsink and installation guidance before moving it between systems.
Is a 120Hz monitor useful if I mostly play at 60fps?
It can still be useful because a 120Hz panel handles 40fps or 60fps presentation cleanly and leaves room for compatible higher-frame-rate modes. It is not required for Pro’s image-quality or ray-tracing improvements.
Does buying the Pro replace the need for a separate disc-drive accessory?
Not necessarily. Sony documents a disc-drive port, but retail packages differ, so confirm the exact contents of the listing. Add the compatible drive and its current price when comparing a Pro purchase with the disc-equipped Slim model.
