PS5 Pro graphics settings are chosen game by game, not through one console-wide preset. A mode may favor image detail and ray tracing, faster frame rates, or a balance; PSSR can reconstruct a higher-resolution output from a lower internal render. To choose, compare the particular game’s stated frame-rate target, resolution and effects, and check whether its behavior depends on a VRR display.
What resolution, frame rate, and ray tracing mean
Resolution: rendered pixels versus displayed output
Resolution describes image detail in pixels, but a game’s internal or base render resolution can differ from the resolution sent to the display. With PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), a game can render at one resolution and reconstruct or upscale to a higher output resolution. So “4K output” does not by itself mean every frame was rendered natively at 4K.
Frame rate: how often the image updates
Frame rate is measured in frames per second (fps). Higher frame rates can make motion and input feel more responsive, while a stated target is not a guarantee that a game will remain at that rate in every scene. Treat numbers in a game’s mode description as that developer’s target or stated maximum, using its exact wording.
Ray tracing: game-specific lighting effects
Ray tracing is a group of techniques for simulating how light interacts with a scene. Depending on the game, it may be used for reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion, or global illumination. A mode may include some of these effects, all of them, or none; the label “ray tracing” alone does not tell you which effects are enabled.

What PSSR does on PS5 Pro
Sony describes PSSR as AI-driven, machine-learning-based upscaling. It reconstructs image detail to support a higher-resolution output from a different render resolution; it does not make the underlying game render natively at that output resolution. For example, Naughty Dog described a PS5 Pro mode for The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered that renders at 1440p, upscales to 4K with PSSR, and targets 60 fps. That is a description of those games’ mode, not a standard PS5 Pro configuration. Naughty Dog’s and other developers’ PS5 Pro mode descriptions give useful examples of how these choices can be combined.
On March 16, 2026, Sony reported an upgraded PSSR rolling out through a system software update. Sony said the update improves image stability, clarity in fine details, and motion stability, and gives developers more flexibility to balance performance and fidelity. Integration and behavior depend on supported games and software versions; Sony also described an optional system setting for existing supported games. Why graphics modes differ from game to game
“Performance,” “Fidelity,” “Balanced,” and “Pro” are labels chosen by a game’s developer, not fixed console-wide profiles. For instance, Insomniac described a Performance Pro mode for four PS5 games that combines crisp 4K resolution and ray-tracing features associated with Fidelity mode with Performance mode’s 60-fps target. BioWare described a different kind of Pro update for Dragon Age: The Veilguard: improvements to its 30-fps Fidelity and 60-fps Performance modes, including improved resolution and ray-traced ambient occlusion in Performance mode. These are dated developer descriptions, not guarantees for other games or future patches. Sony’s developer roundup contains these examples.
When a game offers several modes, compare what its current in-game descriptions say rather than relying on the name. Look for:

- Frame rate: the stated target or maximum, and whether the mode description qualifies it.
- Resolution: internal render resolution, output resolution, and whether PSSR is used, if specified.
- Effects: which ray-traced effects are enabled, rather than just whether the mode says “ray tracing.”
- Display conditions: whether a mode requires or behaves differently with VRR or a high-refresh display.
- Updates: current patch notes and mode descriptions, since developers can change game support.
How VRR and your display affect a mode
Sony lists VRR support as a PS5 Pro capability, but that does not mean every game uses VRR or delivers the same output. Some developers explicitly describe different results for displays with VRR. In Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red says Ray Tracing Pro targets 40 fps on VRR-enabled high-frame-rate displays and 30 fps otherwise; its Performance mode reaches up to 90 fps on VRR displays, while its Ray Tracing mode targets 60 fps with selected ray-tracing enhancements. Those are game-specific descriptions, not PS5 Pro-wide frame-rate promises. The Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 Pro mode details explain the conditions.
A display’s refresh rate and VRR support matter only where a particular game uses them. Sony also lists 8K gaming support for the console, but that platform capability does not establish that every title renders or outputs at 8K. Check both the game’s supported modes and your display’s capabilities before choosing based on either feature. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement describes the platform capabilities.

Which PS5 Pro graphics mode should you choose?
There is no universally best setting: choose according to the trade-off that matters to you in that game.
- Favor responsiveness: start with a Performance mode if its stated frame-rate target is your priority. Check whether it reduces resolution or omits effects you care about; some Pro modes add visual features while retaining a higher frame-rate target.
- Favor image detail or lighting: consider a Fidelity or ray-tracing-focused mode when its resolution and effects are more important to you than its frame-rate target.
- Want a compromise: try a Balanced or Pro mode if the developer describes it as combining features. Do not assume the label means the same trade-off across games.
- Have a VRR display: check whether the game’s mode description specifies VRR-dependent behavior before treating a higher target as available to your setup.
Mode names and options can change with updates. The most reliable comparison is the current in-game description and the developer’s patch notes for that title.

What Sony’s PS5 Pro performance figures do—and do not—mean
In its September 10, 2024 announcement, Sony said PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and memory 28% faster than the then-current PS5, enabling “up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay.” Sony also said its ray-tracing rays could be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the then-current PS5. These are Sony’s launch-announcement comparisons, not independent benchmarks or guaranteed gains in each game. The actual mode, image quality, effects, and frame-rate behavior remain title-specific. Sony’s announcement provides its qualifications and platform context.
