If your PS5 cannot connect to PlayStation Network (PSN), first determine whether PlayStation is experiencing an outage or your home network is at fault. During a service outage, the most reliable way to keep playing is an already-installed, offline-capable game—preferably a physical PS5 disc in a console with a compatible disc drive. A downloaded digital game can also work offline when it was downloaded in advance and Console Sharing and Offline Play was enabled on that PS5. Neither route guarantees every title or mode: some games require first-launch activation, a patch, account authentication, or online servers.
The steps below separate outage decisions from local troubleshooting, explain the physical-versus-digital trade-off, and show what to prepare before the next interruption.

| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Physical PS5 game disc | Playing during a PSN outage with the least digital-license dependence | PS5 with a compatible disc drive; disc data must be copied before play | PS5 | Oct 2026 |
| Downloaded digital game with Console Sharing and Offline Play | Owners who already downloaded the title and prepared the console | Setting enabled on this PS5; it can be enabled on only one PS5 at a time | PS5 | Oct 2026 |
| Downloaded PS Plus game | Subscribers whose installed catalog title still has an active entitlement | Active subscription and continued catalog availability; prior download recommended | PS5 | Oct 2026 |
Prices are not listed because the available PlayStation guidance does not establish a price for any of these offline routes.
What should I check first when my PS5 cannot connect to PSN?
Check the official PlayStation Network status information before changing settings. That single check tells you whether to wait for service restoration or troubleshoot your own console and network.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check PSN status. If PlayStation reports an outage or maintenance, DNS changes, a new router, and other home-network changes cannot bring PSN back. Use a game that is already installed and accessible, then try online features after service returns.
- Restart the PS5. PlayStation lists a console restart among the first responses to connection errors.
- Restart the router correctly. Power it down for at least five minutes, start it again, and retry the PS5 connection.
- Decide which case you have. If phones, computers, and other consoles also lose internet access, the fault is probably the router, modem, or internet service. If only this PS5 fails, continue with the console-specific checks below.
Do not keep repeating network repairs during a confirmed PSN outage. License validation, Store purchases, downloads, and server-dependent modes may remain unavailable until PlayStation services recover.
Can I play a PS5 disc game without internet?
Usually, a physical disc is the strongest offline fallback, provided your PS5 has a compatible disc drive and the particular title does not impose an online requirement. Sony’s Quick Start Guide instructs you to insert the disc, wait while the game data copies, and select the game from the Games home when it is ready.
How to use a disc offline
- Turn on the PS5 and insert the game disc with the correct side facing as shown by the console’s disc-drive markings.
- Wait for the installation or copying process to finish. Do not eject the disc while the console is copying data.
- When the game icon appears on the Games home, select it and start the title.
- Keep the disc inserted whenever the game requires a physical ownership check at launch.
The disc represents ownership locally, so this route is less dependent on a Store-license check than a digital purchase. It is not a universal offline guarantee, however. A game can require an initial online activation, a mandatory update, an account sign-in, or remote servers for particular features. Multiplayer, live events, cloud-connected functions, and other server-dependent modes will not work merely because the disc is present.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Insert and install the disc while the console is online if you want the best chance of starting it during a later interruption. If a title has a required first-run activation or update, completing that requirement in advance matters more than simply owning the disc. The official guidance does not provide a title-by-title list of guaranteed offline games, so check the individual game’s requirements rather than assuming every disc is fully self-contained.
How do I play a digital PS5 game offline?
A downloaded digital game can remain playable without PSN when the game is already on the console and Console Sharing and Offline Play was enabled there beforehand. PlayStation describes the setting as allowing people who use that PS5 to play games and media while the console is offline.

Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play
- Sign in with the account that purchased the game.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Choose the option to enable it.
- Download and launch the game while the PS5 is online, so the console can complete any required authorization or update.
The setting applies to one PS5 at a time. Enabling it on a different PS5 changes which console has the offline entitlement. This is particularly important in a household where one account owns the game and another user plays: the owning account must have enabled Console Sharing and Offline Play on that console.
Why does a digital game show a padlock?
A padlock generally means the PS5 cannot currently verify the game’s license or the account does not have the required entitlement. Confirm that the signed-in account is the one that bought the title. For a game obtained through PlayStation Plus, confirm that the subscription is active and that the title remains available under that entitlement.

When PSN access is available again, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. PlayStation says this process does not affect saved data and can help with padlocks, missing games or add-ons, and some crashes. During a genuine PSN outage, restoration may not complete because the license service itself is unreachable; wait for service recovery rather than repeatedly deleting or reinstalling the game.
What is different about PS Plus games during an outage?
PS Plus titles have an additional entitlement dependency. The game must already be downloaded, the subscription associated with the entitlement must still be active, and the title must remain available under the applicable catalog or offer.
- A downloaded subscription game is not equivalent to a permanently purchased digital game.
- Removing the title, changing accounts, or letting the subscription lapse can prevent offline access.
- Catalog changes can end access even when the game remains installed.
- Online modes still require the game’s servers and PSN connectivity.
For an outage-ready library, keep at least one disc-based title or a permanently purchased digital title prepared in addition to subscription games.

How do I fix a PS5 that cannot connect when PSN is working?
If the status page shows no broad outage, work through local network checks in this order. Stop when the connection is restored; changing several variables at once makes the cause harder to identify.
1. Test the connection from the PS5
Open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, select your configured network, and run the connection test again. Record whether the failure concerns obtaining an IP address, internet access, or PSN sign-in; each points to a different layer of the connection.
2. Try a wired LAN connection
Connect the PS5 directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and retest. PlayStation recommends a wired connection where possible because it removes wireless interference and weak-signal problems. Ethernet will not fix a PlayStation-side outage, but it can distinguish a Wi-Fi problem from a wider internet or account problem.
3. Improve the Wi-Fi path
If wired access is not practical, move the PS5 closer to the router and remove substantial obstructions between them. Retest after each change. A console that works near the router but not in its usual position is experiencing a wireless coverage or interference issue rather than a PSN licensing problem.
4. Remove extra routing layers
Multiple routers can create nested NAT conditions that interfere with PSN connectivity. If your modem, mesh system, and separate router are all routing traffic, configure the network so that only the intended device performs routing, or ask the internet provider for the correct bridge or access-point arrangement.

5. Check IPv6 mode
PS5 supports IPv6, but it does not support an IPv6-only network connection. Ensure the router also provides IPv4 connectivity rather than operating exclusively in IPv6-only mode.
6. Update PS5 system software
Install any available system-software update through the normal update screen once internet access is available. If ordinary downloading repeatedly fails, Sony provides a USB update procedure through Safe Mode. Follow the current PlayStation instructions exactly, including the required USB folder and file naming.
7. Avoid destructive recovery options
Do not choose Reset PS5 or system-software reinstallation as a routine network fix. PlayStation warns that reinstalling system software deletes console data. Reserve those options for a confirmed software-recovery situation after less destructive steps have failed and your saves and other data are backed up where possible.

- Buying games, add-ons, or subscriptions from the Store.
- Downloading a game, patch, or add-on that is not already on the console.
- Restoring licenses or resolving a padlock that requires an online entitlement check.
- Online multiplayer, leaderboards, live events, cloud features, and any mode whose server is required.
- Remote services that depend on PSN authentication.
A title can support offline single-player while still disabling its online modes. Conversely, a game may refuse to start until a first-run activation or mandatory patch has been completed. Check the title’s own requirements whenever possible.

How should I prepare my PS5 for the next PSN outage?
Preparation is the difference between an outage being an inconvenience and losing access to your whole library. Complete these checks while PSN is available.
- Keep at least one physical PS5 game and, if your console uses a detachable or compatible drive, verify that the drive reads the disc correctly.
- Install the disc game fully and launch it once before you need it offline.
- Download important purchased digital games in advance rather than relying on a download during an outage.
- Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the PS5 that will be used offline.
- Launch each critical digital title once while signed in as the purchasing account.
- For PS Plus games, confirm the subscription is active and understand that catalog availability can change.
- Install pending game and system updates while online, especially for titles that may require a first-run patch.
- Keep an Ethernet cable available if the problem turns out to be local Wi-Fi rather than a PSN outage.
- Know the path to Restore Licenses, but use it only after PSN connectivity returns.
Which offline route is right for my situation?
Choose based on what is already prepared, not on what you could download after the outage begins.
Choose a physical disc when
- Your PS5 has a compatible disc drive.
- You want the least reliance on a digital Store license during a service interruption.
- The disc game has already been installed and its first-run requirements are complete.
Choose a purchased digital game when
- The game is already downloaded.
- The purchasing account enabled Console Sharing and Offline Play on this PS5.
- You accept that a padlock or expired authorization may require PSN before the game can launch again.
Treat a PS Plus title as a secondary fallback when
- The subscription is active.
- The title remains in the applicable catalog or offer.
- You have already launched and prepared it on this console.
In all three cases, separate local game launch from online services. A prepared local title may start while PSN is down, but no preparation can make a server-dependent mode operate without its server.

How were these options selected?
The routes are ordered by how little they depend on a live PSN license check during an outage. The comparison considers ownership model, whether the game is already installed and authorized, dependence on account or game servers, required PS5 hardware, recovery timing, and the risk that a title has an undisclosed first-launch or patch requirement. Official PlayStation guidance supports these settings and procedures but does not publish a complete list of games guaranteed to work entirely offline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can another account on my PS5 play my downloaded game during a PSN outage?
Yes, if the purchasing account enabled Console Sharing and Offline Play on that PS5 before the outage and the game is already downloaded. Without that setting, the other account may see a padlock because the console cannot use the owner’s offline entitlement.
Will an Ethernet cable restore PSN during an outage?
No. Ethernet only addresses the connection between your PS5 and home network. It can help when Wi-Fi interference or signal quality is the problem, but it cannot bypass PlayStation maintenance or a PSN service failure.
Can I restore a locked game while PlayStation services are down?
Usually not. Restore Licenses needs access to PlayStation’s license service, so wait until PSN is reachable, then use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
