To judge a PS5 game before buying, verify the exact edition, read a review that names the tested platform and build, then look for measured frame-rate and image-quality evidence rather than trusting a “60fps” target. Finally, match the game’s modes to your display: 120Hz and VRR features depend on the TV or monitor, cable, console settings and game support working together. A high score can tell you a game is enjoyable; it cannot prove that its PS5 version is stable. Use the process below to assess both questions separately.

What should I check before reading any review?

Start with the product you will actually purchase. A store page can offer several products under one game name, and their performance features, upgrade rights and save compatibility may differ.

  1. Open the PlayStation Store listing and the publisher’s official game page. Record whether it is a native PS5 edition, a PS4 edition playable through backward compatibility, a cross-generation bundle, a disc release, or a digital release.
  2. Write down the edition. Standard, deluxe and special editions can include different DLC, early access or upgrade entitlements. Do not assume the cheapest listing includes a PS5 license.
  3. Note every declared display feature. Look for performance, quality, balanced or ray-tracing modes; HDR; VRR; 120Hz; and any PS5 Pro enhancement. Also record whether a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade is free, paid or unavailable.
  4. Check the date and version context. A launch review may describe an unpatched build, while the store listing may now represent a substantially different version.

PSFoundry’s methodology treats PlayStation Store and publisher pages as the source for declared facts, then separates those claims from measured technical analysis. That distinction prevents a marketing label from being mistaken for a performance result.

How do I find a review that applies to my PS5 version?

Choose a review that explicitly identifies its platform, edition and software build. A review that simply says “console version” may combine PS4 and PS5 observations, making its performance comments unreliable for your purchase.

Check the platform and build

  • Look for “PS5,” not only “PlayStation,” in the review header or methodology.
  • Find the tested patch or build number, and whether the article was updated after launch patches.
  • Confirm whether the reviewer used a base PS5 or PS5 Pro.
  • See whether the review discusses graphics modes, frame-rate behavior and image quality separately from gameplay.

Use indexes for discovery, not proof

A platform-specific index, such as Push Square’s PS5 review section, can help locate coverage. Its score is an editorial judgment about the game, however, not a measurement of frame-time stability. Read the technical paragraphs and the review’s testing notes instead of treating the number at the top as a hardware verdict.

Separate game quality from technical quality

Editorial reviews are the right evidence for writing, pacing, level design, accessibility, difficulty and audience fit. They may also mention visible stutter or image-quality problems, but those observations are impressions unless the author provides a technical method or measurements. A technically polished game can still be a poor fit for your tastes, and an excellent game can have a disappointing PS5 implementation.

What technical evidence proves that a PS5 game runs well?

Prefer a technical analysis that reports observed behavior. A target such as “up to 60fps” describes an intended ceiling, not what the game sustains during combat, traversal or heavy effects.

Look for these measurements

  • Graphics modes: performance, quality, balanced and ray-tracing options, including what each mode changes.
  • Frame-rate behavior: target, typical output, dips, frame-time spikes and whether drops occur during particular scenes.
  • Resolution: internal resolution, output resolution and the reconstruction or upscaling method used.
  • Ray tracing: which effects are enabled and how much image quality or performance they cost.
  • Stutter: traversal stutter, shader-compilation pauses, streaming hitches and whether they remain after patches.
  • Display features: VRR range, 120Hz modes and any requirement for a compatible display.
  • Console differences: behavior on a base PS5 versus PS5 Pro, if a Pro-specific mode exists.
  • Build identification: the patch installed when the measurements were made.

PSFoundry describes full technical analysis as measured data covering graphics modes, frame-rate targets, internal and output resolutions, upscaling and ray tracing. Its console-specific score is explicitly “a single 0–100 number describing how a game runs — never how good the game is.” Read that score alongside an editorial review, not as a replacement for one.

Understand the three evidence levels

Evidence level What it can establish What it cannot establish
Full technical analysis Measured mode behavior, frame-rate and frame-time changes, resolution, reconstruction, ray tracing and stutter on the named build and console. How enjoyable the game is or whether its design suits you.
Editorial impressions A credible reviewer’s observations about appearance, responsiveness and noticeable performance issues. A locked frame rate, exact resolution or behavior in every scene.
Declared support Features the platform holder or publisher says the product supports, such as HDR, VRR or a 120Hz mode. Stable output under load, absence of stutter or the quality of the implementation.

If only declared support exists, report it as support, not as proof of a measured result. That wording is especially important for “60fps” and “120Hz” claims.

How can I tell whether “60fps” means a stable 60fps?

Compare the advertised target with observed frame-rate and frame-time data. A mode can reach 60fps in light scenes yet drop during traversal, combat or effects-heavy sequences.

  1. Identify the mode that carries the 60fps label.
  2. Read whether the analysis reports a locked output, a variable range or specific dips.
  3. Check for frame-time spikes; a nominally high frame rate can still feel uneven when frames arrive irregularly.
  4. Look for separate results in quality, balanced and ray-tracing modes.
  5. Check whether the measurements came before or after a performance patch.

Do not turn “up to 60fps,” “60fps mode” or “targets 60fps” into “runs at a locked 60fps.” If no measurement is available, the strongest accurate statement is that the publisher declares a 60fps mode.

Do I need a 120Hz TV or monitor for PS5 performance modes?

You need a 120Hz-capable display for modes that require 120Hz; a 60Hz panel cannot enable them. Sony’s resolution guide states that PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120Hz video output, but the console specification alone does not make a game or display support every mode.

Check the entire signal chain

  • Display: The TV or monitor must accept the desired resolution and refresh rate, and support VRR if you want variable refresh.
  • Cable: An HDMI 2.1 cable can help carry 4K at 120Hz when the display and console support it. It cannot add a feature absent from either device.
  • Console: In PS5 video settings, enable the appropriate 120Hz output and VRR options when available.
  • Game: The title must offer a compatible mode; a 120Hz display does not unlock one that the software lacks.

Sony’s support guidance describes checking SDR/HDR output at 60Hz and 120Hz and checking VRR output when the display supports it. Use those checks after connecting the console, then verify the game’s own graphics menu. A 120Hz television is therefore an enabling requirement, not a guarantee of 120 rendered frames per second.

How do I verify VRR and 40fps modes?

Read the mode’s stated requirements and the technical analysis together. VRR can smooth variable frame rates within the display’s supported range, but it requires compatible hardware, console settings and game support.

  • Confirm that the review says whether VRR was enabled during its observations and identifies the display conditions.
  • Check whether the game’s mode is marked as requiring 120Hz. PSFoundry notes that a mode requiring 120Hz cannot be enabled on a 60Hz TV.
  • For a 40fps balanced mode, verify that the display runs at 120Hz; 40 frames divide evenly into a 120Hz refresh cycle, while a 60Hz display cannot present that cadence correctly.
  • Look for the mode’s resolution and ray-tracing trade-offs, not only its frame-rate label.

PSFoundry’s database categories include 120fps, 60fps, 40fps, ray tracing, PSSR, VRR and PS5 Pro games. Treat those categories as feature indicators and consult the accompanying measurements for actual behavior.

What is the difference between a native PS5 game and a PS4 game on PS5?

A native PS5 edition can expose PS5-specific modes and rendering features that a backward-compatible PS4 edition does not. Running a PS4 game on PS5 may improve loading or smoothness, but it is not automatically equivalent to buying the native version.

What Sony’s compatibility statement means

Sony says the PS5 is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of the 4,000-plus PS4 games. Selected PS4 games may benefit from Game Boost, which can produce a higher or smoother frame rate. Sony also warns that some functions may be unavailable and that some games may show errors or unexpected behavior on PS5.

Questions to answer before choosing the cheaper version

  • Is the listing a PS4 license, a native PS5 license or a bundle containing both?
  • Is the PS5 upgrade free, paid, time-limited or unavailable?
  • Do saves transfer between editions, and does the transfer work across regions or disc and digital copies?
  • Does downloadable content work in the edition you plan to buy?
  • Does the performance evidence cover the exact edition, rather than the other console build?

Confirm these details on the store and publisher pages before relying on a review. A PS4 copy that runs acceptably through compatibility may still lack a PS5 edition’s HDR implementation, ray tracing, 120Hz option, DualSense features or higher-resolution assets.

How should I compare two PS5 games?

Use identical questions for each title so a strong editorial score does not hide a weaker technical fit. Put the results in a notes table before deciding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison axis What to record
Edition Native PS5, backward-compatible PS4 or cross-gen bundle.
Graphics modes Quality, performance, balanced and ray-tracing options, with each mode’s stated target.
Observed stability Measured frame rate, frame-time behavior, drops and scene-specific stutter.
Image quality Internal and output resolution, reconstruction method and visible changes between modes.
Display requirements Whether VRR or 120Hz is required, and which modes work on a 60Hz display.
Patch status Launch build or later patch, with the review date and build identified.
Console model Base PS5 or PS5 Pro, including any Pro-only enhancement.
Reviewer conditions Platform, display, capture method and whether observations are measured or editorial.
Purchase terms Edition contents, upgrade cost, save and DLC compatibility, and any available refund or trial option.

Then make two separate decisions: “Is this a game I want?” from editorial coverage, and “Is this the version I want to run on my setup?” from technical evidence. If either answer is uncertain, delay the purchase until a review of the relevant build appears or use an available trial or refund policy.

How do I check my own PS5 display settings?

Before blaming a game for missing HDR, VRR or 120Hz, confirm that the console and display negotiate the expected signal.

  1. Connect the PS5 directly to an HDMI input rated for the display’s desired resolution and refresh rate.
  2. Use a suitable HDMI 2.1 cable when attempting 4K at 120Hz; a cable cannot compensate for a 60Hz-only input.
  3. Open the PS5 video-output settings and inspect the detected resolution, HDR status, 120Hz output and VRR options.
  4. Run the console’s video-information or test display options at 60Hz and 120Hz, and check VRR when the display reports support.
  5. Open the game’s graphics menu and select the mode you intend to evaluate.
  6. Recheck after changing inputs, enabling a television’s game mode or updating the game, because those changes can alter available output options.

If a mode remains unavailable, identify which link fails: the game may not support it, the display may be 60Hz-only, the input may lack the required bandwidth, or a console setting may be disabled. Buying another cable will not create software support or raise a panel’s refresh limit.

How do I recognize stutter and frame drops in a review?

Look for descriptions of when unevenness occurs, not just adjectives such as “smooth” or “rough.” Traversal stutter, shader-compilation pauses and combat drops have different causes and may respond differently to patches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Frame-rate drop: Output falls below the mode’s target during demanding scenes.
  • Frame-time spike: One or more frames take substantially longer, producing a hitch even when the average frame rate looks high.
  • Traversal stutter: Streaming new areas causes repeated hitches while moving through the world.
  • Shader-compilation stutter: Effects trigger a pause the first time they appear, sometimes reduced by later patches.

A credible technical article should connect the symptom to a scene, mode, console and patch. If it only says that performance “feels inconsistent,” treat that as a useful warning but not a universal measurement.

When should I trust a launch review, and when should I wait?

Trust a launch review for the game-quality questions it actually answers, but be cautious about technical conclusions when the article identifies a day-one build or server-dependent conditions. Compare its build date with later technical updates and patch notes before buying.

  • Prefer the newest analysis that still identifies the tested patch and console.
  • Check whether a patch changed graphics modes, frame pacing, resolution or VRR behavior.
  • Do not assume a later patch fixed every issue; require a new observation or measurement.
  • If no post-patch evidence exists, describe the result as “measured on the named launch build,” not as the game’s permanent behavior.

This approach also protects against the reverse error: an old review may document problems that no longer occur, while a store description may still use unchanged marketing language.

How should I weigh reviews, technical analyses and store pages?

Give each source the job it is qualified to perform, then reconcile differences by checking the edition and build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Official pages establish identity and declared support. Use Sony, the PlayStation Store and the publisher for edition, compatibility, upgrade and advertised feature claims.
  2. Technical analyses establish observed operation. Use measured reports for frame rate, frame time, resolution, reconstruction, ray tracing and stutter.
  3. Editorial reviews establish fit. Use them for design, writing, pacing, accessibility, difficulty and audience suitability.
  4. Resolve conflicts by scope. A store page saying “120Hz mode” and an analysis reporting drops are not necessarily contradictory: one states availability, the other describes behavior under load.

Never replace a missing measurement with a target, and never present an editorial impression as a laboratory result. The honest conclusion for an unnamed game is procedural: exact performance depends on the title, edition, patch, console model, display and evidence source.

How we picked the checks in this guide

The process follows the evidence hierarchy described above: official documentation for declared compatibility and output features; platform-specific reviews for game quality and audience fit; and measured technical analyses for mode behavior, resolution, frame pacing, ray tracing and stutter. It also requires every comparison to identify the edition, patch, console and display conditions, because those variables can change the result.

What should I do immediately before pressing Buy?

  • Copy the exact product name and edition from the PlayStation Store.
  • Confirm native PS5 versus PS4 compatibility and the upgrade price or entitlement.
  • Find a PS5 review that names the platform, console and build.
  • Find measured technical evidence, or label the result as declared support when measurements are absent.
  • Compare target and observed frame-rate behavior, including drops and frame-time issues.
  • Check whether your display is 60Hz or 120Hz and whether it supports VRR.
  • Verify HDR, ray tracing, balanced modes, save transfer and DLC compatibility.
  • Recheck the review date and patch status before completing the purchase.

FAQ

Can a PS5 game advertise 120Hz but render at less than 120fps?

Yes. “120Hz” can describe the console’s output mode or a game option without promising 120 rendered frames in every scene. Look for measurements that state the observed frame-rate range and whether VRR is used.

Will a PS5 Pro patch make every game run better?

No. Improvement depends on a title-specific update or the way the game benefits from the console’s features. Check for a named PS5 Pro mode or measured Pro analysis rather than inferring support from the console model alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a 60Hz television make a PS5 game unplayable?

No. Most games still offer 30fps or 60fps choices that work on a 60Hz display. You mainly lose access to modes that explicitly require 120Hz, including some 40fps balanced options.

Should I buy the PS4 version if it is cheaper?

Only after confirming upgrade rights, save transfer, DLC compatibility and the features you care about. A PS4 copy may run through backward compatibility and Game Boost, but it is not guaranteed to include the native PS5 edition’s modes or enhancements.

What if reviews disagree about performance?

First compare their patch, console, edition and display conditions. Give greater weight to reproducible measurements, and treat conflicting unmeasured impressions as uncertainty rather than choosing the more flattering claim.
