Update a PS5 through Sony’s own System Software Update screen whenever the console is working. If a security vulnerability has been disclosed, first verify whether Sony has published an advisory that names the affected versions and the fixed release. Sony’s US release notes currently list 26.07-14.20.00 as the newest PS5 system software (checked October 29, 2026), while the preceding 26.06-14.10.00 entry only says that Sony made “some security fixes.” That wording does not prove that either release fixes a particular vulnerability or CVE.
Use the normal on-console update in the ordinary case. If the download fails, retry over wired networking or in Safe Mode. Use a correctly prepared USB drive only as a documented fallback. Keep power connected, never switch off the console during installation, and treat Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as a separate, data-erasing last resort.
What is the safest way to update PS5 firmware after a vulnerability disclosure?
The safest procedure is to install the newest version offered by the PS5 itself, using Sony’s official release-notes page to confirm the current version. On a working console, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. When Sony has published a newer build, the console displays Update Available.
Do not assume that a news report, a forum post or an unnamed “security fixes” note identifies the patch for the vulnerability you read about. The current US version-history page lists 26.07-14.20.00 as latest and describes that entry in terms of messages and usability. The previous 26.06-14.10.00 entry says, “We’ve made some security fixes to the system software,” but does not name a CVE, exploit, researcher, severity or affected-version range. Check the live page immediately before installing because Sony’s version list can change.

If the disclosure names a specific affected version, compare its hardware scope, vulnerable version range and fixed version with an authoritative vulnerability-specific advisory. If no such mapping exists, describe the relationship as unconfirmed and still install the latest official system software. Updating is prudent security maintenance; it is not evidence that a particular exploit has been remediated.
Sony’s PS5 system-software information and release notes are the source for the version and note wording. Sony’s general update instructions are at PS5 system software.
What should I check before starting the update?
Most failed or damaged installations are avoidable. Use this short checklist before selecting Update:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Confirm the source. Prefer the PS5’s own update mechanism. If you need a manual file, download it only from Sony’s PS5 system-software page.
- Check the current release notes. Record the version Sony lists today rather than relying on an old number copied into an article.
- Make power stable. Do not begin immediately before or after a known power outage. Do not unplug, restart or switch off the console while installation is running. Sony warns: “Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your console to be damaged.”
- Allow time for the restart. A system update can download, verify, install and reboot. Do not treat a blank screen or a slow progress stage as permission to remove power.
- Use only official update data. Avoid unofficial archives, modified packages and exploit-oriented installation methods. Sony warns that modifications or unofficial methods can impair operation and may affect warranty or repair service.
- Back up first if a reset may be required. A normal update path is different from reinstalling the system software, but a console that is already unstable may eventually require the destructive option.
These precautions protect the installation process; they do not guarantee that a vulnerability is absent or that a patch covers a particular disclosure.
How do I install a PS5 system-software update from the home screen?
Use this route when you can reach the normal PS5 interface and the console can connect to PlayStation Network:
- Connect the PS5 to the internet. A wired connection is preferable if Wi-Fi is unreliable, but a cable is not required for a normal successful update.
- Open Settings from the home screen.
- Select System, then System Software.
- Open System Software Update and Settings.
- Choose Update System Software.
- If the screen shows Update Available, follow the prompts to download and install it.
Leave the console powered as instructed until the process completes. Do not start a game, remove a storage device or interrupt a restart simply because the download appears finished; installation is a separate stage.
If the console reports that no update is available, compare its offered version with Sony’s current US release-notes page. A report about a vulnerability may refer to a different region, hardware revision, beta build or a patch that Sony has not publicly linked to the disclosure. Do not force a manual file solely to make the version number match a headline.

Does the latest PS5 release fix the vulnerability I read about?
Not necessarily. Sony’s public notes are often brief, and the currently listed entries do not establish a one-to-one relationship with an unnamed disclosure. The 26.06-14.10.00 note confirms general security fixes; it does not identify a vulnerability. The 26.07-14.20.00 note, as listed on Sony’s current US version-history page, discusses usability and messages rather than a named security fix.
To claim that a release fixes a disclosed issue, an authoritative statement should identify at least the affected product or versions and the fixed version. A vulnerability identifier such as a CVE, a Sony security advisory, or a disclosure from the researcher can provide that mapping. Without it, use careful language: “Install the latest official update; Sony’s notes mention security fixes in an earlier release, but the available notes do not confirm coverage of this specific disclosure.”
Sony’s version-history page is a release record, not a complete vulnerability database. Its PlayStation Bug Bounty reference describes a reporting program, not an installer or a guarantee that every report receives a public technical advisory.
What should I do if the download fails while the home screen still works?
Start with Sony’s ordinary retry path; do not jump directly to a reset. In the PS5 control center, highlight the failed item under Downloads/Uploads, choose View Error Info, then select Try Again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the retry fails repeatedly, connect the console to the router with a LAN cable and attempt the on-console update again. A wired retry changes the network path without changing the system-software procedure. Check that the cable is seated, the router is online and no planned power interruption is under way.
Keep the home screen available while you troubleshoot. If the console can still start normally, do not select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) merely because a download failed. That option has a different purpose and deletes console data.
Sony’s Safe Mode update guide documents the next steps when an ordinary retry does not work or the normal interface becomes unavailable.

How do I update PS5 system software in Safe Mode?
Safe Mode is appropriate when the PS5 cannot complete the normal update or you cannot reach the home screen. It requires a compatible controller connected with a USB cable.
- Turn the PS5 completely off.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after you hear the second beep; the second beep occurs about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable, then press the controller’s PS button.
- Choose Update System Software from the Safe Mode menu.
- Use the direct-download option if it is offered and follow the on-screen instructions.
Do not confuse the Safe Mode Update System Software entry with Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). The former attempts to update; the latter wipes the system software and user data. If a Safe Mode network update succeeds, let the console reboot normally before judging the result.
If Safe Mode cannot see a network or the download continues to fail, the USB update path below provides an offline source. A USB update still uses Sony’s file and exact folder names; it is not a way to install modified firmware.
How do I perform the USB update fallback correctly?
Use the USB method only when the on-console or Safe Mode network update is impractical. You need an internet-connected PC or Mac, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and Sony’s separately labeled update file. Sony’s US page specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file.
- On the computer, format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting erases the drive, so copy any files you need elsewhere first.
- At the root of the drive, create a folder named
PS5using uppercase letters. - Inside
PS5, create another folder namedUPDATE, also uppercase. - Download the file labeled for an ordinary PS5 system-software update from Sony’s official page. Do not select the separately labeled reinstallation file.
- Save the download inside the
UPDATEfolder and name it exactlyPS5UPDATE.PUP. - Safely eject the USB drive from the computer.
- With the PS5 turned off, insert the drive.
- Start Safe Mode using the two-beep procedure, connect the controller by USB and press its PS button.
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
The path on the drive should therefore be USB root/PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. If the console says it cannot find the file, check the drive format, spelling, uppercase folder names and file extension. Some computers hide extensions or automatically rename duplicate downloads; verify that the file is not PS5UPDATE.PUP.PUP and that it is the update file rather than the reinstallation package.

Keep the console powered throughout verification and installation. If the USB update fails, return to Sony’s instructions rather than trying an unofficial archive or a modified package.
When should I use “Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)”?
Use reinstallation only after normal updating, a network retry, Safe Mode updating and the documented USB update have failed, or when Sony’s support process specifically directs you to it. Reinstallation is not a stronger version of an ordinary update: it deletes the console’s system data and user data.
Also popular on Amazon
The reinstallation workflow uses a different download from the ordinary update. Sony’s Safe Mode instructions require the file labeled for reinstallation and the Safe Mode choice Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Do not substitute that file in the ordinary Update from USB Storage Device procedure, and do not casually combine the two sets of steps.
If manual updating continues to fail, Sony says the console may need repair diagnostics. Record any displayed error code, keep the failed USB structure intact for reference and use Sony support before repeatedly attempting a destructive reset.

If the console still reaches its settings, back up before selecting a reinstall. Sony’s path is Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Prepare a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT with enough free capacity for the selected content.
- Connect it to the PS5. Do not use USB extended storage that is formatted for game data as the backup drive; Sony distinguishes that storage from a backup device.
- Open the backup path above and choose the categories you need. Sony lists games and apps, saved data, captures and settings among the backup options.
- Wait for the backup to finish and keep the drive connected until the console confirms completion.
A restore erases data currently on the console before writing the backup, so review what the backup contains before relying on it. Backups are a recovery measure, not a substitute for confirming that the installed system software addresses a particular vulnerability.
See Sony’s PS5 USB backup instructions for the supported drive preparation and restore cautions.
How can I make future PS5 security updates install sooner?
Enable Sony’s automatic-download and automatic-install options, while remembering that some updates can still require approval. Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then enable Download Update Files Automatically and, if appropriate for your setup, Install Update Files Automatically.

For updates during Rest Mode, also enable Stay Connected to the Internet under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. The console must be able to reach the update service and remain powered; automatic settings do not override an outage or a required confirmation prompt.

Automatic installation is convenient, but continue to read Sony’s release notes when a vulnerability is disclosed. The setting cannot tell you whether a short security note maps to the exact issue reported in the news.

| Situation | Recommended path | Extra equipment | Data-loss risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home screen works and network is reliable | Settings > System > System Software > Update System Software | None beyond an internet connection | Use the ordinary update; do not choose reset |
| Download failed but the console still works | Downloads/Uploads > View Error Info > Try Again; retry with LAN if needed | LAN cable if Wi-Fi is unreliable | No reset is required |
| Home screen unavailable or repeated network failure | Safe Mode > Update System Software | Controller and USB cable | Choose update, not reinstall |
| Safe Mode network update fails | Safe Mode > Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device | Computer, FAT32/exFAT USB drive, official update file | Use the update file; no intentional reset |
| All documented update methods fail | Contact Sony support; consider Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) only as directed | Backup drive if the console is usable | Reinstallation deletes console data |
This decision order minimizes both interruption risk and unnecessary data loss. It also keeps the ordinary update, USB update and destructive reinstallation procedures distinct.
What should I avoid after a security disclosure?
- Do not delay an official update to preserve a jailbreak or exploit. Sony warns that unofficial methods and modifications can impair operation and affect warranty or repair service.
- Do not download firmware from an unverified mirror. A file that has been renamed or modified can fail verification or create a support problem.
- Do not infer patch coverage from a version number alone. Wait for a vulnerability-specific advisory before claiming that the disclosed issue is fixed.
- Do not interrupt installation to troubleshoot. If the progress screen appears stalled, follow Sony’s support guidance; removing power can damage the console.
- Do not confuse a USB update with a USB reinstallation. Their files and Safe Mode choices are intentionally different.
- Do not treat third-party utilities or services as a PS5 security fix. Sony’s own update channels are the relevant mechanism.
No reliable statistic was supplied for the prevalence of PS5 vulnerabilities, exploit attempts or patch effectiveness. Avoid numeric risk claims that cannot be sourced. The practical security action is to verify the current official release, install it safely and preserve a recovery path.
What if Sony has not linked the disclosure to a fixed release?
Install the latest official system software anyway, then monitor Sony’s release notes and any authoritative advisory for a confirmed mapping. Keep the console’s network exposure and account security in mind, but do not attempt exploit tooling or unofficial firmware as a workaround.
For a written incident record, note the disclosure date, the affected model or version range stated by the source, the Sony version available when you updated and whether the update completed without error. That documentation helps support staff distinguish a normal update failure from a vulnerability question without overstating what Sony has confirmed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a normal PS5 system-software update erase my games and saves?
Sony separates the ordinary “Update System Software” action from “Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software),” which is the destructive option. Keep a backup if the console is unstable, and never select the reset entry merely because a download failed.
Can I update a PS5 without an internet connection on the console?
Yes, the documented fallback uses an internet-connected PC or Mac to download Sony’s update file and a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive. The PS5 still installs the file through Safe Mode, using the exact PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP structure.
Why does my PS5 say it cannot find the USB update file?
Check that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, the folders are named PS5 and UPDATE in uppercase, and the file is exactly PS5UPDATE.PUP inside UPDATE. Also confirm that you downloaded Sony’s update file rather than the separately labeled reinstallation file.
What should I do if the PS5 loses power during installation?
Do not repeatedly remove power or try unofficial recovery files. Allow the console to restart if it can, then use Sony’s Safe Mode update guidance; persistent failure may require Sony repair diagnostics. Sony warns that interrupting installation can damage the console.
Where can I verify whether a vulnerability is actually patched?
Use Sony’s current PS5 system-software release notes together with an authoritative advisory that identifies the affected versions and fixed release. A generic note about security fixes does not, by itself, establish coverage of a named CVE or exploit.
