To identify people talking in a PS5 party, update the console to system software 26.06-14.00.00 or later, join or create a PlayStation party, then open the Voice Chat card in Control Center. Choose More > Display Who’s Speaking, turn on Display Names, and optionally use Position to move the label. The overlay is a party-chat feature, not a headset setting, so a DualSense controller microphone is sufficient if you want to speak.

What do I need before enabling Display Who’s Speaking?

Three conditions determine whether the setting appears:

  • Your PS5 must run system software 26.06-14.00.00 or newer. Sony Interactive Entertainment added speaker identification in that release. Sony’s notes page listed 26.07-14.20.00 as the latest build on 29 October 2026.
  • You must already be inside a PlayStation party. The control appears on the Voice Chat card only when a party voice chat exists.
  • You do not need a PULSE headset to enable or view the overlay. The DualSense controller has a built-in microphone if you want to speak, but the speaker-name display itself is a software overlay.

The feature became part of the public release notes with the update reported as shipping on 16 September 2026 by Engadget and AUTOMATON. Some players saw it earlier during an uneven rollout, but Sony did not document how that early availability was controlled. Version 26.06-14.00.00 is the important minimum; the later 26.07-14.20.00 build is not required if your console already has the feature release or a newer one.

Sony’s system software notes describe the change simply: “You can now see who’s speaking while you’re in a voice chat.” This is a visual aid for identifying the active speaker in a PlayStation party, not a microphone upgrade, audio routing option, or setting that reveals who is speaking in every game.

How do I enable speaker identification in PS5 voice chat?

  1. Check the system software. From the home screen, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Install any available update and restart if prompted. A build at or above 26.06-14.00.00 includes the feature.
  2. Create or join a party. Press the PS button to open Control Center. Select Game Base > Parties, then choose Start Party or join an existing party. When creating one, select Open Party or Closed Party. An Open Party and a Closed Party are both PlayStation parties; the distinction does not change the speaker-name setting.
  3. Open the voice-chat controls. Press the PS button again while the party is active and select the Voice Chat card in Control Center. Make sure you are opening the card for the party you intend to use.
  4. Turn on names. Select the three-dot More button, choose Display Who’s Speaking, and switch on Display Names. The name of the person currently speaking will appear as an on-screen indicator. The setting is off by default, so opening the menu alone does not enable it.
  5. Choose a clear location. In the same menu, select Position. Move the indicator away from a minimap, health bar, subtitles, or other HUD elements. Sony’s notes confirm that Position changes placement; they do not publish the complete list of position choices. Engadget illustrated a Top Left placement.

Sony’s documented path is the Voice Chat card in Control Center, followed by More > Display Who’s Speaking and Display Names. If you are searching in Settings > Sound, you are in the wrong place: audio settings control microphones and playback, not this overlay.

The exact labels can vary with the console’s system language. Sony’s Japanese notes give the same sequence using その他 (More), 発言者の名前を表示 (Display Who’s Speaking), 名前を表示 (Display Names), and 位置 (Position). The location remains the Control Center’s Voice Chat card.

How do I hide or move the speaker name?

Return to Control Center > Voice Chat > More > Display Who’s Speaking. Turn Display Names off to remove the overlay, or open Position and select another location. There are no documented controls for changing the overlay’s size or transparency, so games with dense HUDs may require trying the available positions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Position is useful when the indicator overlaps a game element you rely on, but it is a placement choice rather than a full layout editor. Sony’s notes confirm that the location can be changed; they do not enumerate every position option. Engadget’s screenshot caption shows the indicator at Top Left, which is an example rather than a complete list of choices. If no placement avoids your HUD, turning Display Names off is the available way to hide it.

How can I adjust one player’s volume after identifying them?

The name indicator is also a quick way to find a microphone that is too loud, too quiet, or producing constant noise. On the Voice Chat card, select that player’s name and choose Volume. Engadget reports that the per-player level carries into later chats with the same person, rather than applying only to the current moment.

This is separate from your overall party-versus-game mix. In Control Center, open Game Base, select the party, and use the voice-chat card’s balance control to favor party audio or game audio for everyone in the chat. The per-player Volume control targets one participant; the chat balance changes the relative level of party audio and other audio.

PlayStation parties are widely reported to support as many as 16 players, a figure reported by Engadget in 2026. Sony’s cited feature notes do not state an official party-size limit, so treat 16 as press-reported rather than a Sony-confirmed specification. In a large conversation, the indicator can help connect a voice to an account name without having to recognize every participant’s voice.

Why can’t I find Display Who’s Speaking?

What you see What to check
No Display Who’s Speaking option Confirm that you are in a PlayStation party and have opened its Voice Chat card. The option is not in Settings > Sound and does not appear on a cold home screen with no active voice chat.
The menu is present but names never appear Open More > Display Who’s Speaking and verify that Display Names is on. Check that the party has other connected participants who are actually speaking.
The setting disappeared after an update Check the installed version under Settings > System > System Software, then run Update System Software. Restart the PS5 after updating and re-enter the party.
You are looking in audio settings Output and microphone controls are elsewhere. The speaker-name overlay is controlled only from the Voice Chat card in Control Center.
The label covers the game HUD Use Position in the Display Who’s Speaking menu. Sony documents placement selection but not a size or opacity slider.

If the console is current and the party card still lacks the option, close and re-open the party, then restart the console. Menu wording can differ by system language; the Japanese notes use その他 for More, 発言者の名前を表示 for Display Who’s Speaking, 名前を表示 for Display Names, and 位置 for Position.

If the names appear for other people but you cannot be heard, troubleshoot your microphone separately; the overlay does not activate or unmute your mic. Sony says the DualSense controller has a mic for voice chat and voice input, and its mute button toggles that mic. Also check Settings > Sound > Microphone for the selected Input Device and Adjust Microphone Level. Those checks address your outgoing voice, not whether Display Names is enabled.

Does the overlay work in game voice chat?

No. Sony documents Display Who’s Speaking for the standard PlayStation voice-chat card, and Engadget reports that it does not replace the voice chat built into games. A title may provide its own speaker HUD, roster indicator, or accessibility option, so check that game’s audio and interface menus when the conversation is happening in its in-game channel.

Switching between party and game chat is done from Control Center > Game Base. Open the party and use the drop-down on the voice-chat card to choose the channel or adjust the balance between them. That channel choice is separate from Display Names: the PS5 overlay is documented for the party voice-chat flow, while an in-game channel’s own speaker display depends on the individual game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, first identify where the conversation is taking place. If everyone is in a PlayStation party, use the Voice Chat card and the steps above. If you are relying on a game’s built-in chat, look for the game’s own HUD and audio options; changing the PlayStation party overlay will not add a speaker label to that game’s chat.

What about Discord voice chat on PS5?

Sony’s 26.06-14.00.00 notes do not state that Display Who’s Speaking applies to Discord. AUTOMATON reports that linked Discord accounts already showed speaking users’ names and icons on PS5, while the update brought a similar indicator to standard PlayStation voice chat. Engadget and TugaTech describe some players seeing the indicator with Discord, but that behavior is player-reported rather than confirmed in Sony’s documentation.

For a dependable result, use the native PlayStation party path described above. Treat any Discord indicator as dependent on the current Discord integration and console software rather than as a guaranteed setting. The important distinction is that Sony’s documented setting is attached to the PlayStation Voice Chat card; the sources describing Discord do not establish that this exact menu switch controls Discord’s display.

Is Display Who’s Speaking available on every PS5 model?

The feature is documented as part of PS5 system software, not as a PS5 Pro-only capability. It works on the regular PS5 and PS5 Pro once the required software is installed. The same release made Enhance PSSR Image Quality on by default, but Sony identifies PSSR as PS5 Pro-only; that limitation does not apply to the speaker-name overlay.

Press coverage commonly describes PlayStation parties with as many as 16 players. Engadget presents that as a widely reported party size, not as a cap confirmed in the Sony documentation cited for this feature. In a large party, the overlay is useful because it associates each active voice with a visible account name instead of requiring you to recognize every microphone. Sony has not published a separate count of how many consoles had access before the public software release.

Do I need a headset to be heard clearly?

No headset is required to enable or view the overlay. The DualSense controller’s microphone can handle party voice chat; press its mute button to mute or unmute it. Sony says a 24.02-09.00.00 controller update improved DualSense and DualSense Edge microphone input with an AI machine-learning model that suppresses background noise from button presses and game audio.

A headset can improve isolation, comfort, and chat mixing, but it changes how you are heard rather than how the name overlay works. Sony describes PULSE 3D’s two built-in microphones as optimally positioned for voice capture and enhanced by noise-cancelling technology. The PULSE Elite uses microphone noise-rejection technology trained to identify, isolate, and remove unwanted noise. Those are optional audio choices, not prerequisites for displaying a speaker’s name.

Microphone option What the published specifications say Useful controls or limits
DualSense built-in microphone Built into every DualSense controller; Sony says the 24.02-09.00.00 software improved noise suppression. Mute or unmute with the controller’s mute button. No headset purchase is needed.
PULSE 3D wireless headset Two built-in microphones with noise-cancelling technology; up to 12 hours of wireless play, according to Sony’s product page. Provides an in-line chat mix and dedicated headset controls.
PULSE Elite wireless headset Retractable boom microphone, PlayStation Link, and up to 30 hours of battery life; Sony says a 10-minute charge can provide up to two hours. Its microphone uses AI noise-rejection technology. Designed for stronger voice isolation, but still optional for Display Who’s Speaking.

To select hardware, use Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device. For microphone input and level, open Settings > Sound > Microphone. Sony’s audio controls also let you set Microphone Status When Starting Voice Chat or Broadcast through the Control Center Mic card; choose Switch to Mute if you want to prevent an automatic hot mic. Sony’s audio settings guidance explains that Switch to Mute turns the microphone off automatically when a voice chat or broadcast starts.

Which PS5 audio settings are easy to confuse with the name overlay?

  • Output Device: Choose the active device under Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device. For headphones, use Output to Headphones.
  • Input Device and Adjust Microphone Level: These are under Settings > Sound > Microphone and affect capture, not the speaker-name display.
  • Microphone Status When Starting Voice Chat or Broadcast: The Switch to Mute option prevents the microphone from opening automatically when a chat or broadcast begins.
  • Audio Focus: With headphones connected, Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus can make party voices clearer. Sony added Audio Focus in version 25.03-11.20.00.
  • PULSE EQ: For compatible PULSE Explore, PULSE 3D, and PULSE Elite hardware, open Control Center > Sound > EQ Presets. Equalizer presets change sound character; they do not identify speakers.

These controls can help if you can identify a participant but still have trouble hearing them, or if your own mic is not transmitting. They do not replace the speaker overlay’s separate path through Control Center > Voice Chat > More.

How does PS5’s indicator compare with other ways to identify speakers?

There are three distinct approaches, and they solve different chat problems:

  • Discord on PS5: Names and icons were already shown for linked Discord accounts according to AUTOMATON; Sony has not documented that Discord uses the new PlayStation setting.
  • In-game voice HUD: Controlled by each game. It may show names, icons, or a speaker animation even when the PlayStation party overlay is unavailable.

Xbox party overlays have historically offered position and transparency adjustments, according to an Engadget report about a May 2017 announcement. That is a comparison point, not a PS5 feature: on PS5, the documented controls are enabling names and choosing their position. If you need opacity adjustment, the available PS5 documentation does not describe such a control.

What changed between the early rollout and the public release?

Some players reported seeing the indicator as early as November 2025, while others never received it or later lost access. Sony did not publish how those early users were selected. The important support milestone is version 26.06-14.00.00, released publicly in September 2026 and listed in Sony’s notes as the version that added the feature. Engadget and AUTOMATON date that release to 16 September 2026; Sony’s notes identify the software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On systems already running the later 26.07-14.20.00 build listed on 29 October 2026, the speaker indicator remains available; that later release’s notes are described as usability- and message-focused rather than a removal or replacement of the feature. There is no Sony-published adoption percentage or user count for the earlier rollout, so the practical check is the installed version and the Voice Chat card menu.

What should I do after the names appear?

  1. Play a short section of the party conversation and watch which account name appears when each person speaks.
  2. If one microphone dominates, select that account on the Voice Chat card and change Volume for that player.
  3. If the label obstructs a critical HUD element, reopen More > Display Who’s Speaking > Position and choose a different location.
  4. If you no longer want an on-screen label, switch Display Names off without leaving the party.

This workflow separates identification from audio quality: the overlay tells you whose microphone is active, while the per-player volume, microphone level, mute state, and headset choice determine how comfortable the conversation sounds. If the problem is that no names appear, start with the party card and Display Names toggle; if the problem is that a voice is difficult to hear, use the participant’s Volume control or the separate audio settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the speaker name be included in a PS5 recording or broadcast?

Sony’s feature notes describe an on-screen indicator during voice chat but do not state whether the label is embedded in captures or broadcasts. Do not assume that a recorded clip will preserve the names unless the game or capture workflow documents that behavior.

Why are the menu labels different on my Japanese-language PS5?

The Japanese release notes use localized labels: その他 for More, 発言者の名前を表示 for Display Who’s Speaking, 名前を表示 for Display Names, and 位置 for Position. The control location is still the Control Center Voice Chat card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the reported 16-player party size an official Sony limit?

Sixteen participants is widely reported in coverage of the overlay, including Engadget, but the Sony documentation cited for this feature does not publish a party-cap figure. Treat it as a press-reported maximum rather than a Sony-confirmed specification.

Can I change the overlay’s font size or opacity?

The documented controls let you turn Display Names on or off and choose Position. Sony and the cited coverage do not document independent size, font, or transparency controls.

Do I need a microphone connected to see other people’s names?

The overlay is a Control Center party-chat feature, not a headset function. A DualSense mic is available if you want to speak, but Sony’s feature instructions do not make a headset a requirement for turning on or viewing the names.

What PS5 software version added Display Who’s Speaking?

Sony Interactive Entertainment added the feature in system software 26.06-14.00.00. Install that version or a later one, join a PlayStation party, and enable Display Names from the Voice Chat card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Display Who’s Speaking show people in every game’s voice chat?

No. Sony documents the setting in the PlayStation party Voice Chat card, and Engadget reports it does not replace in-game voice-chat HUDs. Check the individual game’s audio or interface options for its own speaker indicator.

Why can’t my friends hear me after I turn on the overlay?

Display Who’s Speaking only identifies the active speaker; it does not unmute or configure your microphone. Check the selected input and Adjust Microphone Level under Settings > Sound > Microphone, and make sure the DualSense mute button has not muted its mic.

The Bottom Line

To show who is talking in a PS5 party, use system software 26.06-14.00.00 or later, open the party’s Control Center > Voice Chat > More > Display Who’s Speaking menu, and turn on Display Names. Use Position to move the label; use the Voice Chat card’s per-player Volume control if someone is too loud or quiet. The overlay is for PlayStation party chat and does not require a headset.
