Choose a PS5 with a disc drive if you own supported PS4 or PS5 discs, want to use physical games released before Sony’s announced January 2028 cutoff, or value having a disc-based option. Choose a Digital Edition if your library is digital and you are comfortable downloading games. Neither console is inherently an online-only machine: either can play eligible purchased and downloaded games offline when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on that PS5. But no disc or digital edition guarantees that every game, mode, update, or service will work offline indefinitely.
This comparison is for US buyers, based on Sony’s published information available on October 30, 2026. One date changes the long-term calculation: Sony announced on July 1, 2026, that production of physical discs for new PlayStation games will end starting in January 2028. The announcement does not apply to games already released or scheduled to release on disc before then. A drive can therefore remain useful for a substantial existing and pre-cutoff library, but it is not a promise that new PlayStation games will keep receiving disc editions after January 2028.
What is the real difference between a disc PS5 and a Digital Edition?
The difference is the way you can install and access games, not whether the console can go online or play offline. A disc-equipped PS5 can use supported PS5 and PS4 game discs as well as download digital games. A Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive, so its games are downloaded unless a compatible add-on drive is available for that specific model.
Sony’s current US comparison page lists a 1TB disc-equipped PS5 and an 825GB Digital Edition. Those are the capacities shown for the configurations on that page, not a rule for every PS5 ever made: launch systems, later revisions, used consoles, and regional listings can differ. Can a Digital Edition PS5 play games without internet?
Yes. A Digital Edition is not an always-online console. Sony says that on a PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled, users can “play games and media you’ve purchased and downloaded” while offline. This applies to the digital edition as well as the disc-equipped console. The crucial distinction is between a game that has already been downloaded and prepared on the console and one that still needs to be acquired or downloaded.
Before an outage or a trip without reliable connectivity, prepare the console you plan to use:
- On that PS5, sign in to the account that owns the digital game.
- Purchase or otherwise obtain the game, then download and install it. An uninstalled game cannot be launched from a digital library without first downloading it.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and enable the feature if it is not already enabled.
- Open the installed game while you still have a connection and check that it launches. For a game with online-only modes or other title-specific requirements, check the game’s own official requirements; the console setting cannot remove those dependencies.

Offline access is not the same as an account-independent or perpetual guarantee. A digital purchase remains tied to the PlayStation account and the applicable license terms. If a lock icon appears or a game will not start, Sony advises checking that the purchasing account is signed in, the relevant subscription is active if the game depends on one, the console is activated as intended, and licenses are restored or checked as appropriate. A PlayStation Plus entitlement should not be treated as equivalent to owning a game independently: access may depend on subscription status and the terms of that entitlement. Does a PS5 game disc guarantee offline play?
No. A disc gives you a physical copy of the game media, but it is not a universal offline certificate. Sony’s quick-start guidance describes installing game data after inserting a game disc. The disc must remain available for play in cases where the game requires it, and a title may have updates, online services, or modes that need a network connection.
Sony’s PS4 backward-compatibility guidance says that supported PS4 games played from disc require the disc to be inserted each time, and that a game may need an update. That guidance does not establish that every PS5 disc—or every PS4 disc—contains a complete, permanently offline version. For a particular game, check its publisher’s requirements and be precise about what you need: the ability to launch its installed single-player campaign is different from access to online multiplayer, live services, patches, or downloadable content.
If offline access matters, install the game and any available update while connected, then verify the specific mode you care about before relying on it away from the internet. Do not assume a newly purchased disc will include all patches or that every mode will remain available if its servers are discontinued. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance also makes clear that compatibility is not universal: PS3 game discs are not supported.

For a buyer deciding today, the announcement makes a disc drive a way to access compatible existing and pre-cutoff releases—not a hedge that guarantees physical copies of future new releases. It does not establish how long any particular pre-2028 disc will remain available for sale, how many copies will be made, or what its future resale value will be. No numerical estimate for those outcomes is provided in the cited Sony materials.
Also separate possession of a disc from ownership of the game’s intellectual property. A disc provides physical media that compatible hardware can read, subject to the game’s requirements and applicable terms. It does not transfer copyright or make every online feature permanent. A digital purchase may be playable offline when prepared on an enabled console, but that does not make it account-independent or an unconditional perpetual license either. Sony’s US terms explain the licensing framework; neither format should be described as a guarantee that every title will remain playable in every way forever.
Can you add a disc drive to a Digital Edition later?
Sometimes, but compatibility depends on the exact PS5 revision. Sony lists its add-on disc drive for the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim Digital Edition consoles and PS5 Pro. It is not listed for the original launch CFI-1000 Digital Edition. Do not buy a drive on the assumption that every Digital Edition has an upgrade path; check the console’s CFI model number against Sony’s compatibility information first.
The add-on drive must be paired with the console over the internet during setup. That means a future drive purchase is not a way to avoid all network requirements: you need an internet connection for the initial pairing. If you already own a launch CFI-1000 Digital Edition, the listed add-on drive is not a supported upgrade for it. If you are buying a newer slim Digital Edition or PS5 Pro, treat the drive as a model-specific option with an internet setup requirement, not as an automatic feature of all digital consoles.
Which edition makes more sense for a physical game collection?
If you own supported PS4 or PS5 discs, or expect to acquire physical games released before the announced cutoff, the disc-equipped console is the straightforward choice. It lets you use those discs without relying on an add-on-drive upgrade path, and it can still download digital games. Keep the disc: Sony says a supported PS4 disc must be inserted each time you play that game.
Before buying on the strength of a collection, check three things: whether the exact game is supported on PS5, whether it is a PS4 or PS5 version, and whether its play modes have requirements beyond inserting the disc. A PS3 disc collection does not become usable by choosing the disc PS5. Likewise, an add-on drive does not make an unsupported game compatible.

How should you prepare a PS5 for outages or long trips?
Plan for the games you actually expect to play, not just the console’s media format. A useful preparation checklist is:
- Install ahead of time. Digital games need to be downloaded; disc games need their data installed. Do this while connected, including any update the game requires.
- Enable offline play on the intended console. Confirm the account’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting on the PS5 you are taking offline.
- Check each game and mode. Confirm whether the desired content requires a server, an account check, a subscription, or a particular update. The general PS5 instructions do not settle those title-specific questions.
- Bring the physical disc if the game requires it. An installed disc game is not necessarily playable without its disc present.
- Leave room for installed games and updates. Sony lists different storage capacities for the US configurations on its current page, and actual free space will be less than the listed capacity once system software and other content use storage.
Storage expansion and backups can help preserve files or make room, but they do not change licensing or a game’s online requirements. Sony says a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD can launch PS5 games. USB extended storage can hold PS5 games, but those games must be copied back to playable storage before launching; PS4 games can be launched from USB extended storage. A suitable USB device can also be used to back up PS5 saves, games, captures, and settings. Backup data is account-linked, and restoring it disables Console Sharing and Offline Play until that feature is enabled again. How do you choose between the two editions?
Use the following decision points in order. They help avoid treating “offline” and “ownership” as a single yes-or-no feature.

- Do you need your existing discs? If you have supported PS4 or PS5 discs, choose a disc-equipped PS5 unless you have confirmed that your particular Digital Edition model supports Sony’s add-on drive and you accept its setup requirements.
- Is the offline library already digital? If so, either edition can play eligible purchased and downloaded games offline with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled. Decide based on other needs, not a belief that Digital Edition means online-only.
- Do you want physical releases after January 2028? Sony has announced that physical disc production for new PlayStation games will end starting then. A disc drive is not a guarantee of physical editions for new releases after the cutoff.
- Are you buying used or older stock? Verify the CFI revision, included drive, and storage capacity on the actual console listing. Do not apply Sony’s current 1TB and 825GB figures to every model.
- Do you need a specific game to work without internet? Check the game’s own requirements and prepare it before disconnecting. Neither console edition can promise that every title or mode works offline.
In short, the disc-equipped PS5 is the safer fit for a physical-library owner and offers broader media flexibility for compatible discs. A Digital Edition is a valid offline-gaming choice for someone whose games are digitally owned, downloaded in advance, and prepared on the console they will use. The 2028 policy narrows the disc format’s future role, but does not erase the practical value of compatible discs already released or scheduled before the cutoff.
