PS5 Remote Play and Xbox Cloud Gaming are different technologies. PS5 Remote Play uses your own PS5 (or PS4) to run the game, then sends the console’s video and audio to your iPad while returning your controller input to the console. Xbox Cloud Gaming runs an eligible Xbox game on Microsoft’s cloud service and streams it to your iPad in a browser; your personal Xbox is not the host.
That distinction determines what you must own, how you connect, which games you can access, and what happens when your home network is unavailable. The PlayStation setup and network guidance are well documented. Xbox’s current subscription, region, browser, and device rules can change, so verify them on Xbox’s official pages before relying on cloud play.
What is the difference between PS5 Remote Play and Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Remote Play is a private, console-to-device stream. Cloud gaming is a service-hosted game session. Both display interactive video on an iPad, but the game is running in a different place and each option has different prerequisites.

| Question | PS5 Remote Play | Xbox Cloud Gaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | Your configured PS5 or PS4 console. | Xbox’s cloud infrastructure, not your personal console. |
| What do you need to own? | A PS5 or PS4, a PlayStation account, and a compatible game. | An account and whatever subscription, title, region, and device eligibility Xbox currently requires; verify those conditions before use. |
| iPad access route | The PS Remote Play app. | A supported browser at Xbox.com/play. |
| Console availability | The console must be powered on or configured for Remote Play from Rest Mode and reachable over the network. | No personal Xbox console is required to host the session. |
| Game selection | Compatible games installed or otherwise available on your own console. | Games included in the current cloud catalogue and available in your location and plan. |
| Network guidance | PlayStation lists 5 Mbps as a baseline and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. | Exact current Xbox requirements were not established here; check Xbox’s current service page. |
| Input | PlayStation identifies DUALSHOCK 4 and DualSense support, subject to iPadOS and app requirements. | Use a controller supported by the current Xbox browser experience; confirm compatibility for your iPad and browser. |
Do not use “Remote Play” and “cloud gaming” as interchangeable labels. Remote Play extends a console you already have. Cloud gaming replaces the personal console as the machine doing the rendering.

Can I play PS5 games on my iPad?
Yes, with PS Remote Play, provided you have a PS5 or PS4, a compatible game, a PlayStation account, the app, and a sufficiently stable connection. The iPad is acting as a remote screen and controller endpoint; it is not running the console game locally.
What you need before starting
- A PS5 or PS4 connected to the internet and signed in to the PlayStation Network.
- A PlayStation account that you can use in the Remote Play app.
- A game compatible with Remote Play and available on your console.
- An iPad that meets the current App Store requirement for PS Remote Play. The listing returned for this guide specifies iPadOS 16 or later.
- A compatible controller, such as a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4, if the game cannot be played with the app’s supported touch controls.
- A home or mobile connection that can sustain the stream. PlayStation gives 5 Mbps as its baseline and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience.
How to enable Remote Play on a PS5
- On the console, open Settings and go to System > Remote Play.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
- If you want to wake the console while it is sleeping, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable the options that keep the console connected to the internet and allow it to be turned on from the network.
- Leave the console connected to power and the network when you expect to connect from elsewhere. PlayStation recommends testing Remote Play near the console before depending on an away-from-home connection.
Menu wording can change with system software. If the app cannot find the console, confirm that Remote Play is enabled, the same PlayStation account is being used, and the console has network access.
How to connect the iPad
- Install PS Remote Play from the App Store.
- Open the app, choose PS5 (or PS4), and sign in with the PlayStation account used on the console.
- Follow the pairing prompt. The app searches for the console over the network and then establishes the stream.
- Pair a controller through the iPad’s Bluetooth settings if you are using one. Start with the console and iPad on the same Wi-Fi network for the first test.
Once connected, the console remains the game host. Closing the app or losing the network ends the remote session, but it does not turn the iPad into a copy of the console.

You can access Xbox Cloud Gaming on iPadOS through a browser when the service is available to your account, location, device, and selected game. Xbox Wire’s December 19, 2025 getting-started guide directs iPhone and iPad users to open Xbox.com/play and sign in.
This is not confirmation of Xbox Remote Play from an Xbox console. The evidence for this comparison establishes the browser-based cloud route, not current Xbox-console Remote Play support on iPad. If you specifically want to stream your own Xbox console, check Xbox’s current support documentation rather than assuming the cloud instructions apply.
Typical cloud-gaming sign-in flow
- Use a current iPad browser and go to Xbox.com/play.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that has the required cloud-gaming entitlement in your region.
- Choose a title that is currently offered for cloud play and start the session.
- Pair a compatible Bluetooth or wired controller if the game requires one, then follow the browser’s on-screen prompt.
Xbox’s catalogue, subscription rules, supported countries, browser requirements, and controller list are service policies rather than permanent iPad specifications. Check the current Xbox cloud-gaming and Apple setup pages before subscribing or troubleshooting. The Apple setup reference is available at Xbox Support; its language and regional URL may redirect to a different local version.
Do I need a console for cloud gaming?
No personal Xbox console is needed for Xbox Cloud Gaming because the game session is created on the cloud service. You still need a compatible account, an eligible game and plan, a supported region and device, and a connection good enough to carry interactive video.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
PS5 Remote Play has the opposite dependency: the console is mandatory because it performs the game’s processing. The iPad cannot connect if the PS5 is offline, unreachable, shut down without network wake enabled, or missing the game you want to play.
What internet speed and network conditions do these options need?
For PS Remote Play, PlayStation states that broadband internet of at least 5 Mbps is required and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. The guidance concerns upload and download conditions, and meeting the number does not guarantee low latency, a fixed image quality, or uninterrupted play.
Making PS Remote Play more reliable
- Run the first test close to the PS5, then test from the location where you intend to play.
- Prefer a stable Wi-Fi connection for the iPad and a wired connection for the PS5 when practical.
- Pause large downloads, 4K streaming, and other traffic on the same network during play.
- Use the console’s Rest Mode network-wake settings if you need to start a session while away.
- Expect mobile play to consume substantial data. PlayStation warns that Remote Play can use significantly more data than ordinary video streaming; check your carrier allowance before using cellular data for long sessions.
What the Xbox comparison can and cannot establish
Cloud gaming is also sensitive to latency, congestion, and Wi-Fi quality, but the precise current Xbox speed threshold, browser matrix, and regional eligibility were not available in the official material used here. Do not treat PlayStation’s 5 Mbps or 15 Mbps figures as Xbox requirements. Use Xbox’s live service page for the values that apply to your country and account.
Do I need a controller to play on iPad?
A controller is the safest choice for console-style games. PlayStation’s compatibility guidance identifies DUALSHOCK 4 support on iOS 14 or later and DualSense Bluetooth support on iOS 14.5 or later, while the current Remote Play App Store listing specifies iPadOS 16 or later for the app. These are different compatibility layers, so the iPadOS version, app version, and controller firmware can all matter.

Pair the controller in Settings > Bluetooth, then open the streaming app. Some games or app versions may expose limited touch controls, but touch input is not equivalent to every physical button, trigger, motion, or haptic feature. Do not assume that a controller feature supported by the console will behave identically through an iPad stream.
Xbox Wire’s iPad cloud-gaming instructions use the browser route but do not establish a particular controller model or every controller feature. Verify the current Xbox compatibility list for your exact iPadOS and browser combination before buying an accessory. A stand or controller mount can improve comfort, but it is optional.
How do game ownership, availability, and cost differ?
Remote Play gives you access to the compatible games available on your own PS5 or PS4. It does not provide a separate catalogue of games; the console’s installed titles, account permissions, and system state still apply. The sources used here do not establish a separate Remote Play fee or current PlayStation game pricing, so check Sony’s terms for your account and region.
Xbox Cloud Gaming depends on the service’s current plan, catalogue, supported country, and title eligibility. Those details can change and were not confirmed in the accessible official passages, so this article does not state a price or promise that a particular Xbox game will be streamable. Confirm the title page and account eligibility immediately before play.
Which option should you choose?
| Your situation | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You own a PS5 and want to continue its games on an iPad. | PS5 Remote Play. | It extends the console you already own and uses its game library. |
| You do not own an Xbox console but want to try an eligible Xbox title. | Xbox Cloud Gaming, if your account and region qualify. | The game runs in the cloud, so a personal console is not the host. |
| Your home console is offline or cannot be left in Rest Mode. | Cloud gaming, where available. | Remote Play cannot reach a console that is not connected and discoverable. |
| You have a strict cellular-data limit. | Whichever option you can use on reliable Wi-Fi. | Interactive video streaming can consume considerable data; PlayStation explicitly warns about Remote Play usage. |
| You need a specific game not known to be in a cloud catalogue. | Remote Play from the console that owns it. | Cloud availability is title- and plan-dependent, while Remote Play reflects your console library. |
| You want to avoid buying or configuring a console. | Xbox Cloud Gaming, subject to current eligibility. | Cloud sessions do not use your personal Xbox as the game host. |
What should I check when Remote Play or cloud gaming fails?
PS Remote Play cannot find the PS5
- Confirm Settings > System > Remote Play > Enable Remote Play is on.
- Check that the console and iPad use the same PlayStation account.
- Wake the PS5 and test on the same local Wi-Fi network.
- If connecting from Rest Mode, verify both internet connectivity and network wake permissions under Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Restart the app and console, then repeat the near-console connection test before diagnosing an away-from-home network.
The stream is blurry, delayed, or disconnects
- Measure the connection rather than relying on Wi-Fi signal bars; compare it with PlayStation’s 5 Mbps baseline and 15 Mbps recommendation.
- Move the iPad closer to the access point, reduce competing traffic, or switch to a less congested network.
- On cellular data, check signal stability and your data allowance. A brief speed peak does not remove latency or congestion problems.
- Test locally. If local play is stable but remote play is not, the limitation is likely the away-from-home route, carrier, or router rather than the iPad app itself.
Xbox Cloud Gaming will not start
- Open Xbox.com/play directly in the browser rather than using the PS Remote Play app.
- Sign in to the account that holds the applicable entitlement and confirm that the chosen title is currently cloud-enabled.
- Check Xbox’s current country, subscription, browser, and device rules; they can differ by market and may have changed since the December 19, 2025 Xbox Wire guide.
- Try a supported controller and update iPadOS and the browser if the service loads but does not accept input.
Is PS5 Remote Play or Xbox Cloud Gaming better for an iPad?
Neither is universally better. Choose PS5 Remote Play when you want your own PS5 library and can keep the console connected and reachable. Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming when you want a service-hosted session without using a personal Xbox, provided the current Xbox plan, catalogue, region, browser, and controller requirements work for you.
The practical decision is therefore about the source of the game, not the size of the iPad screen: Remote Play depends on your hardware at home, while cloud gaming depends on Microsoft’s service eligibility and catalogue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can PS5 Remote Play work when the console is completely turned off?
No. Remote Play needs the PS5 running or in Rest Mode with network connectivity and wake permissions enabled. A full shutdown removes the network path the app uses to reach the console.
Will every PS5 game appear in Remote Play?
No. The title must support Remote Play and be available to the account and console you are connecting to. Peripherals or special hardware required by a particular game can also limit what is practical on an iPad.

PlayStation allows mobile-network use, but carrier conditions can affect the session and data consumption may be substantially higher than ordinary video streaming. Check your plan’s allowance and test the connection before a long trip.
Are Xbox Cloud Gaming games permanently available once I play them?
No. Cloud access follows the service’s current catalogue and licensing rules. A game can be added, removed, or restricted by plan or region, so check its live Xbox listing when you intend to play.
