Back up the save, not the game installation. A downloaded PS5 game can use PlayStation Plus cloud storage, while a PS5 whole-console backup is the only USB-based route for PS5-native saves. PS4 saves—including PS4 games played on a PS5—can use cloud storage or an individual-save USB copy. Streamed games use PlayStation’s streaming storage and need their own copy procedure.
A backup preserves your progress, but it does not preserve the right to play a title that leaves the Extra or Premium Game Catalog. If you later buy an available edition, you may be able to use the retained save; downloading or claiming a catalog title before it departs does not permanently keep catalog access.
Can I still use my save when a PS Plus game leaves?
Usually, yes—but only if you retain the save and later regain access to a compatible copy of the game. When an Extra or Premium Game Catalog title leaves, PlayStation removes catalog access even if the game remains installed. Your cloud, USB or console-backup copy is progress insurance, not a license.
Do not confuse a catalog departure with a monthly game. A monthly game is a separate Plus benefit with different entitlement rules. The steps below concern a game downloaded or streamed from the catalog, and they do not establish a departure date, edition or physical release for any unnamed title.

What the backup does and does not preserve
- It preserves saved data associated with the account, platform version and title you copied.
- It does not preserve catalog eligibility after the title is removed.
- If you purchase a compatible edition later, the retained save may be usable, subject to that game’s own cross-generation and region rules.
- An installed game, a USB extended-storage copy and an M.2 SSD are not substitutes for a saved-data backup.
Where does my PS Plus save live?
The correct backup method depends first on how the game was played. Use the platform version that created the save, not simply the console you happen to be holding.
| How you played | Where the save is handled | Supported preservation method | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downloaded PS5 version on PS5 | PS5 console storage, with optional PS Plus cloud storage | Upload to cloud storage, or include it in a whole-console PS5 USB backup | PlayStation does not provide an individual PS5-save-to-USB export |
| PS4 version played on PS5 | PS5’s Saved Data (PS4) area | Upload to cloud storage or copy the individual save to USB | Cloud data may need a manual download back to PS5 storage |
| Downloaded game on PS4 | PS4 system storage, with optional online storage | Manual or automatic cloud upload, or individual-save USB copy | USB-copy features require you to be signed in |
| Streamed game on PS5, PS4 or PC | PlayStation game-streaming storage | Copy between streaming storage and online storage through the streaming controls | Streaming and downloaded saves do not transfer automatically |
Before copying anything, check whether the title created a PS4 or PS5 save. A PS4 save and a PS5 save can appear under similarly named games but use different menus and may not be interchangeable. Never assume cross-version compatibility without checking the particular title.
How do I back up a downloaded PS5 save to cloud storage?
Use this procedure for a PS5-native version downloaded to a PS5. Finish the game’s own save operation first, then close the game so the copy represents a settled session.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Upload to Cloud Storage.
- Select the game and the intended save file, then choose Upload. If several files exist, check the file names and dates rather than selecting blindly.
- For a shortcut, highlight the game on the PS5 home screen, open its options menu and choose Upload/Download Saved Data.
- Verify the result in Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data > View Sync Status. The game’s options menu also has Check Sync Status of Saved Data.
Why an enabled auto-sync setting is not proof
Automatic synchronization can be useful, but it is not a confirmation that the session you just finished is already in the cloud. Auto-sync depends on the applicable rest-mode and internet settings, automatic-update settings and the per-game configuration. A manual upload followed by a status check is the safer departure-day routine.
How do I download the PS5 cloud copy later?
On the PS5, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Download or Delete from Cloud Storage > Download to console storage. Compare the cloud and console dates before accepting an overwrite. Downloading an older copy can remove newer local progress, so stop if the timestamp is not the one you intended.

How do I save a PS4 game’s progress when I played it on PS5?
Choose the PS4 menu, even though the hardware is a PS5. This applies to a PS4 game running through backward compatibility, not to a native PS5 version.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS4), then Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Upload to Cloud Storage.
- Select the title and the desired save, and complete the upload.
- To retrieve it later, use the matching Download or Delete from Cloud Storage area and download it to console storage.
PS5 can automatically upload eligible PS4-game data when configured, but PlayStation says that cloud data must be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage. Automatic upload therefore does not mean that a newly reset or replacement PS5 already has the save locally.
Can I make an individual USB copy of that PS4 save?
Yes. A PS4 saved-data file can be copied to an ordinary USB storage device. This is separate from USB extended storage that holds installed games.
- Connect the USB device to the PS5.
- In Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4), choose the USB-copy option for PS4 saved data.
- Select the game and save files, then choose Copy.
- Keep the drive with the title and platform information so you can identify the correct file when restoring it.
The exact PS5 menu labels can vary by system-software presentation, but the decisive choice remains Saved Data (PS4), not Saved Data (PS5). A drive containing an installed game through extended storage is not automatically a backup of its save.
How do I back up saves on a PS4 console?
On a PS4, you can use Plus online storage or make an independent copy of individual saves on USB. Cloud upload is convenient for moving between consoles; USB is useful when you want a file outside the online-storage workflow.

Manual cloud upload
- Open Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage.
- Select the game and the correct save file.
- Review any overwrite prompt carefully, then confirm the upload.
Automatic PS4 upload requirements
PlayStation’s automatic-upload setup calls for a primary PS4, Stay Connected to the Internet enabled in rest-mode settings and Settings > Application Data Management > Auto-Upload > Enable Automatic Uploads. If you are using a friend’s PS4, do a manual upload instead of assuming that the console’s automatic settings apply to your account.

Download a PS4 cloud copy
Use Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in Online Storage > Download to System Storage. The console can present an overwrite choice; compare the displayed dates and times before replacing the local file.
Copy an individual PS4 save to USB
- Connect a USB storage device and sign in to PlayStation Network; PlayStation requires sign-in for the PS4 USB-copy feature.
- Go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Copy to USB Storage Device.
- Select the game, choose the desired save files and select Copy.
- To restore, open Saved Data on USB Storage Device > Copy to System Storage.
PS4 shows dates and times in overwrite prompts. Treat those timestamps as a check against accidental rollback, especially if you have played on more than one console.
How do I back up a PS5-native save to USB?
You cannot copy one PS5 saved-data file directly to a USB drive. PlayStation’s supported USB alternative is a whole-console backup made through the PS5 system software.
- Connect a compatible USB storage device formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Not every device works for this function.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Select the data types to include, making sure saved data is selected.
- Follow the restart and backup prompts and wait for the process to finish before disconnecting the drive.
Why this is not an individual-save archive
A PS5 console backup is a system-level image, not a browsable folder from which you can safely extract one save. PlayStation warns: When restoring data, your PS5 console will erase all data saved on your console. Do not restore the backup merely to inspect one game’s progress; first protect any newer data elsewhere.

- The restore requires system software at least as new as the software installed when the backup was created.
- The backup is linked to the account and restores system data, not just the departing game.
- Restoring disables Console Sharing and Offline Play until you enable those features again.
- PS5 games installed on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD are not included in this backup.
- Trophies are not included, so synchronize them separately through the normal PlayStation service.
Do not format or treat a USB extended-storage drive as though it were the PS5 backup drive. Extended storage is designed for installed games; the backup workflow uses a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted device and has different restoration behavior.

A streamed game saves to PlayStation’s streaming service rather than to the downloaded game’s local-save location. A stream can resume automatically while a downloaded installation still has no usable local save, because the two storage paths are separate.
Streaming on PS5
- While the game is streaming, press the PS button.
- Select the PlayStation Plus card.
- Choose Manage Saved Data and follow the prompts to copy the streaming save to online storage.
Streaming on PS4
Press PS > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in Game Streaming Storage > Copy to Online Storage. To resume a later streamed session, use the corresponding controls to copy the online-storage save back into game-streaming storage.
Streaming on PC
In the PlayStation Plus PC app, open the streaming saved-data menu and select Copy to Online Storage. The later restore path likewise copies the online-storage version back into game-streaming storage.

These transfers do not automatically convert a streaming save into a downloaded PS4 or PS5 save. Before buying or downloading the game, check which version the title supports and whether its own transfer feature is required.

How do I confirm that the backup is the right one?
Most save-loss mistakes come from copying the wrong platform, account, title or timestamp. Perform these checks before the game leaves.
- Platform: Confirm whether the file is listed under Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4).
- Account: Use the account that created the save and owns the relevant Plus entitlement or game license.
- Title and edition: Match the exact game entry. A PS4 and PS5 edition can have separate save records.
- Recency: On PS5, inspect sync status. On PS4, compare the dates and times shown in upload, download and overwrite prompts.
- Completion: After a manual cloud upload, return to the sync-status screen instead of assuming that selecting the file completed the transfer.
- Restore target: Before downloading or copying over a local file, preserve any newer local progress that you still need.
Which backup method should I choose?
Choose the method that matches both the save platform and your tolerance for restore risk.
| Situation | Best-fit method | Why | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downloaded PS5-native game | Manual Plus cloud upload | Targets the individual save and is easy to download later | Uses cloud storage and requires careful account and sync checks |
| Downloaded PS5-native game without an individual USB option | Whole-console PS5 backup | Includes PS5 saved data on a USB device | Restoration is system-wide and erases current console data |
| PS4 game on PS5 | Cloud upload or individual USB copy under Saved Data (PS4) | Supports granular save handling | Cloud copies may need a manual download to local PS5 storage |
| Downloaded game on PS4 | Cloud upload plus, if desired, an individual USB copy | Provides two independent preservation paths | Automatic upload has specific console and rest-mode requirements |
| Streamed game | Copy from game-streaming storage to online storage | Uses the location where the stream actually saves progress | It does not automatically create a downloaded-version save |
What should I do on the day a title leaves?
Make the final copy after your last completed in-game save, not while the game is still open or syncing.
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify whether the title is a catalog game or a monthly Plus game and note whether you played a PS4 version, PS5 version or stream.
- Close the game after its save indicator or in-game save operation finishes.
- Use the matching cloud, USB or streaming-storage procedure above.
- Check sync status or displayed file times and confirm the account and title.
- Do not delete the local save until the independent copy is confirmed.
- Record what you backed up: platform version, title, account and copy date.
If the title later becomes available only through purchase, reinstall or download that compatible edition first, then restore the save using the same platform path. A backup cannot make a removed catalog license active.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much PlayStation Plus cloud storage is available for saves?
PlayStation Support lists up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data and up to 100 GB for PS4 saved data. The same 2026 support information lists a maximum of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files; these are service limits, not the size of any individual game save.
Are trophies included when I back up a PS5 console to USB?
No. PlayStation’s PS5 backup guidance excludes trophies from the console backup. Synchronize trophy progress through the normal PlayStation service rather than relying on the USB backup.
Why does my downloaded version not see the save from a streamed session?
Streaming saves remain in game-streaming storage until you copy them to online storage, and that copy still does not automatically convert the data for a downloaded PS4 or PS5 installation. The game may require its own supported transfer path, and the downloaded edition must be compatible with the original save.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I restore just one PS5 save from a USB console backup?
The supported PS5 USB backup is a whole-console operation rather than an individual-save browser. Restoring it is a system restore that removes current console data, so it is unsuitable for checking one save while preserving newer data on the console.
