Generate the PDF on your server behind GET /invoices/:id/pdf. First authenticate the caller, then authorize that specific invoice before loading any billing data. Render from trusted server-side values—not prices or totals posted by the browser—using an in-process library such as PDFKit or an authenticated HTML-to-PDF service. Return the bytes with Content-Type: application/pdf and a sanitized download filename. If a browser process must render an invoice page, give it a short-lived, single-use token bound to the invoice instead of forwarding the customer’s session cookie.
What should a protected invoice PDF endpoint do?
A reliable implementation treats PDF generation as a normal, authorization-protected application operation, not as a publicly reachable print page. The request lifecycle is:
- Receive
GET /invoices/:id/pdfon your application server. - Authenticate the request with the normal session, access token, or equivalent identity mechanism.
- Authorize the requested invoice ID for that user or account before reading invoice details.
- Construct the document from canonical, server-side invoice data.
- Render the PDF with an in-process library or a server-to-server HTML renderer.
- Send PDF-specific response headers and the generated bytes.
- Return a precise error when authentication, authorization, lookup, or rendering fails.
Keeping these stages in this order prevents a common flaw: generating an invoice first and checking ownership afterward. Authorization must be part of the data-access path, so a customer cannot substitute another customer’s ID and obtain its document.

A framework-neutral contract
GET /invoices/:id/pdf
user = require_authenticated_session(request)
invoice = load_invoice_for_user(id, user.id)
if invoice is missing: return 404
pdf_bytes = render_invoice(invoice)
response.status = 200
response.headers['Content-Type'] = 'application/pdf'
response.headers['Content-Disposition'] = 'attachment; filename="invoice-<safe-id>.pdf"'
return pdf_bytes
The route should not accept customer, line-item, tax, currency, subtotal, or total fields from the browser. A browser may request an invoice ID; it should never be the authority for what that invoice contains.

How do authentication and authorization differ for invoice downloads?
Authentication answers “who is making this request?” Authorization answers “may that identity access this invoice?” You need both checks, and they protect against different failures.
Authenticate before any invoice work
Run the same middleware used by the rest of the customer area. If there is no valid session or access token, stop with 401 Unauthorized. Do not query invoice details, render HTML, or call an external renderer for an unauthenticated request.
Authorize the specific invoice
After authentication, constrain the invoice query by both the route ID and the authenticated owner or account. A query shaped like WHERE invoice_id = :id AND customer_id = :current_user makes the ownership rule part of retrieval rather than a later conditional.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYour policy may distinguish “the ID does not exist” from “the ID exists but belongs to another customer.” The implementation guidance for this endpoint calls for 404 Not Found when the invoice cannot be found and 403 Forbidden when a logged-in user is not allowed to access it. If your security policy intentionally hides resource existence, document that choice and use one response consistently; do not let different code paths leak details accidentally.
Use trusted invoice state
Calculate or retrieve totals, taxes, discounts, customer names, addresses, payment status, and line items from your database or a trusted billing service. If an invoice is mutable, decide which persisted version is authoritative at download time. The PDF should be a representation of that server-side record, not a receipt for values supplied in a form or query string.
How do I generate an invoice PDF directly with PDFKit?
PDFKit is a JavaScript PDF generation library for Node and the browser. In Node, a PDFDocument is a readable stream, so you can pipe it to the HTTP response, add content, and call end().

Stream a document from a Node route
The following Express-style example shows the important ordering. Replace the data-access and authentication functions with those from your application.
import PDFDocument from 'pdfkit';
app.get('/invoices/:id/pdf', async (req, res, next) => {
try {
const user = await requireAuthenticatedSession(req); // throws or returns 401
const invoice = await db.invoice.findUnique({
where: { id: req.params.id }
});
if (!invoice) {
return res.status(404).json({ error: 'Invoice not found' });
}
if (!userCanReadInvoice(user, invoice)) {
return res.status(403).json({ error: 'Invoice access denied' });
}
const safeId = String(invoice.id).replace(/[^a-zA-Z0-9_-]/g, '_');
res.status(200);
res.setHeader('Content-Type', 'application/pdf');
res.setHeader(
'Content-Disposition',
`attachment; filename="invoice-${safeId}.pdf"`
);
const doc = new PDFDocument();
doc.on('error', next);
doc.pipe(res);
doc.fontSize(20).text('Invoice');
doc.moveDown();
doc.fontSize(11).text(`Invoice number: ${invoice.number}`);
doc.text(`Customer: ${invoice.customerName}`);
doc.text(`Issued: ${invoice.issuedDate}`);
doc.moveDown();
for (const item of invoice.lineItems) {
doc.text(`${item.description} — ${item.quantity} × ${item.unitPrice}`);
}
doc.moveDown();
doc.text(`Subtotal: ${invoice.subtotal}`);
doc.text(`Tax: ${invoice.tax}`);
doc.text(`Total: ${invoice.total}`);
doc.end();
} catch (error) {
next(error);
}
});
Set headers only after authentication, authorization, and data loading have succeeded. If the renderer fails before the response starts, your error handler can still return a useful status. Once bytes have been sent, an HTTP status cannot be changed, so attach a stream error handler and monitor failures in your server logs.
Streaming versus buffering
Streaming lowers the need to hold an entire document in memory and lets the client begin receiving data as the document is produced. Buffering the completed PDF first can make error handling and content-length calculation simpler, but it consumes memory proportional to document size and delays the response until rendering finishes. Choose deliberately; neither approach replaces authorization.
Control layout explicitly
With a drawing-oriented library, you position text, lines, tables, images, and page breaks yourself. This gives deterministic control over the document but means you must implement wrapping, pagination, font selection, and repeated headers. Keep layout code separate from the route so the endpoint remains responsible for security and transport rather than page design.
When is an HTML-to-PDF renderer a better choice?
An HTML-to-PDF service is useful when your invoice already exists as a carefully styled HTML template or when CSS layout is more productive than drawing every element. Your server sends HTML or an invoice URL over an authenticated server-to-server request and receives PDF bytes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Decision axis | PDFKit or another in-process generator | HTML-to-PDF service or browser runtime |
|---|---|---|
| Data boundary | Invoice data is passed directly to application code that draws the document. | HTML or a URL is sent to a separate renderer, which produces the bytes. |
| Operational footprint | An application dependency and stream handling run inside your service. | You operate a browser process or depend on a hosted API and its connectivity. |
| Visual fidelity | Precise drawing primitives, but CSS is not the layout system. | HTML and CSS can closely match a web invoice, subject to the renderer’s CSS support. |
| Security surface | Protect the route, data, fonts, and generated output. | Also protect provider credentials, URL fetching, token lifetime, cookies, and network egress. |
| Compliance features | Check support for PDF/A, embedded fonts, encryption, and permission settings. | Verify the service or browser pipeline supports the archival and security options you require. |
Keep a provider key in server-side configuration, never in browser JavaScript or an invoice URL. Make the server-to-server request authenticated and restrict what the renderer can fetch. A renderer that can load arbitrary URLs may become a path to internal services unless its network access is constrained.

Send HTML, not untrusted fragments
Build the invoice HTML from escaped, server-side values. Do not concatenate raw customer notes or line-item descriptions into markup. Sanitize or escape text according to the templating system, and keep external assets predictable so rendering does not depend on a customer-controlled URL.
How can a browser renderer load a protected invoice page without the customer’s session cookie?
Do not copy the user’s ordinary session cookie into a separate browser process. Instead, expose a dedicated print route that accepts a random, short-lived, single-use render token bound to one invoice.
- The authenticated application request checks ownership of invoice
id. - The server mints a cryptographically random token with a short expiration and stores its association with that invoice and the intended render operation.
- The server gives the renderer the invoice URL plus the token in a dedicated header or other controlled channel.
- The print route validates the token, verifies that it matches the invoice ID, checks expiration, and atomically consumes it before rendering.
- The renderer receives no ordinary customer cookies. It can access only the invoice associated with the valid token.
- After the first successful or attempted use, reject the token so a copied URL cannot be replayed.
If the token is missing, expired, mismatched, or already consumed, reject the render request or fall back to the normal session check, as your route design requires. Keep the print route separate from the customer-facing page so a browser renderer cannot accidentally inherit interactive session state.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Properties the token must have
- Randomness: generate it with a cryptographically secure random source.
- Short lifetime: expiration limits the window in which a leaked token is useful.
- Invoice binding: a token issued for one invoice must not authorize another.
- Single use: consume it atomically and reject replays.
- Dedicated transport: pass it in a controlled header or server-side request rather than exposing a customer cookie.
Which response headers should the download use?
Return the PDF media type and an attachment disposition:
Content-Type: application/pdf
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="invoice-<sanitized-id>.pdf"
attachment asks the browser to download the file. Sanitize the identifier before placing it in the filename: allow a narrow character set such as letters, digits, underscores, and hyphens, and replace everything else. Never allow a route parameter to introduce path separators, control characters, or a second header.
If your product also offers an in-browser preview, make that an explicit mode rather than silently changing download behavior. Keep the authorization and data-building code shared while varying only the disposition and presentation needed by the client.

Log the internal exception, renderer response, invoice ID, and request correlation ID without logging session cookies, bearer tokens, or full sensitive invoice contents.
What security controls belong in the PDF layer?
PDF-level controls can reduce casual copying or enforce archival requirements, but they do not replace route authorization. A viewer application ultimately enforces decrypted-file permissions, so a user who is not allowed to receive the file must be stopped before generation.
- Encryption and passwords: apply document or owner passwords only when your distribution model can securely deliver and manage them.
- Permission flags: configure printing, copying, modifying, annotating, form filling, accessibility, and document assembly according to policy.
- PDF/A: use an archival profile when retention rules require it, and verify that fonts and other resources are embedded correctly.
- Fonts: embed the fonts your invoice requires and ensure licensing permits server-side embedding.
- Data minimization: include only billing information needed on the invoice; do not add internal notes or secrets because the output may be downloaded and forwarded.
How should I test a protected invoice PDF route?
Test the authorization boundary and the renderer independently, then test them together through the HTTP contract.
Authentication and authorization tests
- Unauthenticated requests receive
401and never invoke invoice rendering. - A user requesting another customer’s invoice receives the intended denial response and no PDF bytes.
- A valid owner receives only the selected invoice, even when IDs are changed, reordered, or supplied repeatedly.
- Missing IDs produce
404without calling a renderer. - Concurrent requests cannot reuse a single-use render token.
Document and transport tests
- Successful responses have
Content-Type: application/pdfand a safe attachment filename. - Totals and customer information in the PDF match server-side records, not client-submitted values.
- Long descriptions, many line items, page breaks, missing optional fields, and non-ASCII names render without truncating required data.
- Renderer failures produce the documented application error and do not masquerade as a valid invoice.
- Print-route rendering works without the customer’s normal cookies and fails with an expired, mismatched, or reused token.
What architecture keeps the route maintainable?
Separate the endpoint into four small responsibilities: an authentication adapter, an invoice authorization/data service, a renderer interface, and an HTTP response adapter. The route calls the data service once, hands the resulting trusted model to whichever renderer is configured, and writes headers and status codes in one place.
Define a renderer contract such as renderInvoice(invoice) -> PDF bytes or stream. A PDFKit implementation can draw directly; an HTML implementation can produce a complete template and make an authenticated server-to-server request. Because both consume the same invoice model, changing visual technology does not require weakening the access check.

Keep renderer credentials, font files, encryption settings, and endpoint URLs in server-side configuration. Rotate credentials using your normal secret-management process, and make failures observable with structured logs and alerts. Never expose a renderer key, single-use token, or internal print URL in client-visible page source.
What is the practical decision rule?
Choose PDFKit when you want in-process generation, direct control over streams, and a small application dependency. Choose an HTML-to-PDF service or browser runtime when your team already maintains an HTML invoice and needs CSS-based layout, while accepting the additional credential, network, and renderer security surface. In either case, the non-negotiable design is the same: authenticate, authorize the invoice, build from trusted data, render on the server, and return a correctly labeled PDF.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the same invoice service be used for email attachments?
Yes. Put invoice retrieval and rendering behind an internal service function that accepts an already-authorized invoice model. The email worker should obtain that model through a controlled server-side identity, rather than calling the customer’s HTTP route with a copied session cookie.
Should I store every generated PDF?
Store a PDF only when your retention, audit, or legal process requires an immutable artifact. Otherwise, regenerating from the canonical invoice record avoids stale files; if records can change, persist the exact version or snapshot used for an issued invoice.
How can customers preview an invoice instead of downloading it?
Offer an explicit preview response that uses the same authentication, authorization, and rendering pipeline but chooses an inline presentation for trusted clients. Keep the downloadable endpoint available so integrations do not depend on browser behavior.
What information belongs in logs for failed downloads?
Record a correlation ID, outcome, renderer type, latency, and an internal invoice identifier that operators can resolve securely. Avoid logging cookies, bearer tokens, single-use render tokens, or complete invoice payloads.
