Our verdict on Zsh
Zsh is a freely available command interpreter designed for interactive use and scripting. It suits people who want to tailor a Unix command-line environment, from individual users to teams across company sizes. Its shell scripting language and configurable line editor support both everyday command entry and more involved workflows, while its self-hosted deployment keeps the shell close to the systems where it runs.
Customization is a central strength. Programmable completion, multi-line editing, customizable prompts and options, and startup files including .zshenv, .zprofile, .zshrc, and .zlogin give users control over how the shell behaves. Filename globbing includes recursive matching and pattern qualifiers; arrays, associative arrays, integer and floating-point arithmetic, spelling correction, and history and variable expansion add scripting and interactive capabilities. This breadth makes Zsh a fit for users who value control over a shell's behavior, though configuring it is part of adopting it.
Zsh is open source and free. The project distributes source archives and documents compilation for modern Unix systems; the published platform coverage includes Unix and Windows via Cygwin. The official FAQ identifies 5.9.2 as the latest production version and describes standalone Windows and OS/2 ports as outdated, so Windows users seeking a standalone current port should look elsewhere. Support is through community and documentation. Choose Zsh for customizable Unix command-line work and scripting; consider an alternative if current standalone Windows support or direct vendor support is a requirement.
