Our verdict on Tokaido

Tokaido is an open-source command-line tool for running isolated Drupal development environments locally. It is designed for Drupal developers who want to start projects with the tok CLI while using Docker-based services such as PHP, Nginx, MySQL, and Varnish. Tokaido supports macOS, Linux, and Windows, with Windows documented as experimental. Its repository-shared YAML configuration also gives teams a way to keep project environment settings alongside their code.

The main strength is its focused local development workflow. Developers can generate and customize Docker Compose configurations, access environments through SSH or a browser, and use an HTTPS local proxy for development sites. Unison file synchronization is included, while Composer and Drush fit common Drupal workflows. Xdebug configuration supports local IDE connections, and the published category specifications include IDE integration and resource controls. These capabilities make Tokaido a practical fit for developers who prefer a CLI-led environment rather than a desktop-first interface.

Tokaido also covers common supporting services without moving away from its Drupal focus. Solr, Memcache, Mailhog, and Adminer can be added as optional services, allowing projects to model a broader local stack. The trade-off is scope: Tokaido is narrowly centered on Drupal and does not provide Kubernetes environments. Its official documentation includes references to Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 and older dependency versions, which may require additional attention for newer projects. Choose Tokaido for a free, open-source Docker workflow centered on Drupal; choose an alternative if you need Kubernetes or a broader multi-framework environment.
