Our verdict on Docker Desktop

Docker Desktop is a desktop application for developers building, sharing, and running containerized applications and microservices. It brings a graphical dashboard together with Docker Engine, the Docker CLI, Docker Compose, Docker Build, local Kubernetes, volume management, an integrated terminal, and Docker Extensions support. Windows, macOS, and Linux are supported, making it suited to teams that need a common desktop workflow across operating systems.

The plan structure covers individual development through organization-level administration. The free Personal plan includes Docker Desktop, Docker Engine and Kubernetes, Docker Hub, Docker Scout, and Docker Debug. Pro costs $9 per user per month with annual billing and adds Docker Build Cloud, Testcontainers Cloud, Synchronized File Shares, Docker Scout health-score visibility, and a five-business-day support response. Team costs $15 per user per month with annual billing and adds bulk user addition, audit logs, Docker Hub role-based access control, a two-business-day support response, and support for up to 100 users. Business costs $24 per user per month with annual billing and adds Hardened Docker Desktop, single sign-on, SCIM user provisioning, Image and Registry Access Management, and Enhanced Container Isolation.

Its ecosystem fit is a central strength. Docker Hub, Docker Scout, Kubernetes, Docker Compose, and Visual Studio Code through Docker DX are listed integrations, while the desktop application supports local container workflows, multi-container Compose applications, and local Kubernetes development and testing. Resource settings cover CPU, memory, swap, disk, networking, file sharing, and virtualization-related options. Docker Desktop is a strong choice for developers and teams wanting a wide local container toolkit, but smaller workflows may not need its full dashboard, Kubernetes, image, and administration scope. Organizations needing single sign-on, provisioning, access management, or isolation should look to Business rather than the free or individual plans.
