Our verdict on Tilt

Tilt is an open-source developer tool for running and iterating on multi-service applications locally. It is designed for teams building microservice applications, especially those deploying to Kubernetes, while also supporting Docker Compose workflows and local processes. Tilt watches source files, builds Docker images, applies Kubernetes configuration or runs Compose services, and updates running environments as code changes. Its web dashboard brings service status, logs, errors, warnings, and runtime information into one view.

The strongest part of Tilt is its live development loop. Changes can update affected resources and modify running containers in place, reducing the friction of repeated rebuilds and redeployments. Teams can define resource dependencies, readiness checks, and startup order, then use Kubernetes port forwarding and service links to reach local services. Tilt works with Kubernetes, Docker, Docker Compose, Kind, Minikube, k3d, and Helm, giving teams several paths for local cluster and service workflows. Tiltfile language support for VS Code and selected JetBrains IDEs, along with a Starlark language server, adds editor guidance to configuration work.

Tilt is free and open source, so its value is centered on workflow coordination rather than tiered commercial features. The product has a broad local-development scope, covering Kubernetes and Compose instead of narrowing itself to one runtime. That breadth suits teams managing several services with different startup requirements, but it also means the workflow is primarily for local iteration, not a general production deployment platform. Teams wanting live updates, aggregated runtime visibility, and dependency-aware startup should consider Tilt. Teams seeking a production operations system or product-level CPU, memory, and disk controls should choose a more specialized alternative.
