Our verdict on Task Coach

Task Coach is a free, open-source desktop task manager for organizing personal projects and to-do lists. It is aimed at solo users and small teams that want structured task management across Windows, macOS, or Linux without a paid plan. Tasks can be created, edited, and deleted alongside subtasks, with list and tree views for different ways to organize work. Due dates, optional reminders, and daily, weekly, or monthly recurrence support ongoing routines as well as one-time work.

Its strongest area is task detail. Users can apply categories, notes, file attachments, filtering, and sorting, while effort and time tracking add context beyond a basic checklist. Task data is stored in XML files, and HTML and CSV exports provide ways to take information outside the application. The published project is distributed under the GNU GPL v3 license, making open-source availability a central part of its profile. These features suit personal projects that benefit from hierarchy, recurring schedules, and written context rather than a minimal task list.

The trade-off is its narrow desktop focus. Task Coach does not provide a web or mobile deployment, and it does not include calendar synchronization or external integrations. That limits its fit for people who need tasks to connect with broader online workspaces or remain accessible across devices. Support channels include email, tickets, community resources, and documentation. Choose Task Coach for free, detailed desktop task management with recurring tasks and local file storage; choose an alternative if calendar connectivity, cross-device access, or integrated collaboration is essential.
